Female Hummingbird IDs can be quite iffy. The other probabilities of similar species here are the Black-chinned and Costa's. Anna's has a straight, short bill and white supercilium. Its tail is shown to project slightly beyond the wing tips, but that's not observable in flying birds. I try to rely on local birders to get reoriented re female and juvenile Hummer IDs... but this remote area had none show up. This early developing flower seemed to be the diner of choice for the Hummers... the better patches were being guarded by competing avarice males. This early blooming tall flower is native to this desert region. It was the bloom of choice for several Hummer species.

Our latest toy: a felt board where we can estimate probabilities for different questions (hopefully reaching an Aumann agreement). The top question is the probability of mankind going extinct before 2100, and the lower one the probability we will get a Templeton grant. I'm the most pessimistic in the whole bunch.
November 18, 2010 - "Roles for Third Parties in Improving Implementation of EPA's and OSHA's Regulations on the Management of Low-Probability, High-Consequence Process Safety Risks" - Penn Program on Regulation, in conjunction with the Wharton Risk Management Center, hosted a conference regarding the usage of third party auditors in the enforcement of regulatory safety measures in high risk industries. Industries which experts call "Low-Probability, High-Consequence," such as nuclear reactors, oil refineries, or chemical processing plants, are specifically hoped to be improved by third party inspections safety. The conference brought together numerous participants from a variety of fields, including from government, industry, insurance, academia, and non-profit sectors. The conference consisted of a day-long discussion spread over three separate panels. Over the course of the conference, participants stressed the importance of implementing a third party system to effectively and thoroughly audit industry despite lack of adequate funds and resources. Other potential scenarios offered for enacting effective third party auditing included making sure that these third party auditors were completely independent from the industries they would be inspecting so as to eliminate bias or a conflict of interest. Another issue to consider is the question of whose authority would the third party auditors be under and what kind of enforcement power would they have to enforce industry change. One of the panel discussions brought up the potential linkage of third party audits with insurance companies so as to provide an incentive for industry to decrease safety risks in order to pay lower insurance premiums. Workshop participants included Isadore "Irv" Rosenthal, a Senior Research Fellow at the Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center; Howard Kunreuther, James G. Dinan Professor of Business and Public Policy at Wharton and Co-Director of the Wharton Risk Center; Laurie Miller, Senior Director of Environment and Process Safety at the American Chemistry Council; Erwann O. ...or Jerdons Carp. From India. Christ alone knows what he was doing in the uk, another unwanted gift fish for some unrealistic idiot with a tiny tank in all probability.
This was a rescue, became a truly vast fish in the end, bout the size of a koi carp. He needed tropical temps though so had to go to an idiot like me with huge aquaria. He arrived to me with a fractured skull and meaty bits hanging out of it, but given the right conditions and meds its amazing how they recover. Really one for a 500 gallon tank plus, home aquarists should stay away from this species really. Too big, too fast, needs the diet variety and the heat. Those scales though, like cut diamonds. Beautiful.
Its probably also a critically endangered species, and should be enjoying the benefits of that legal status, but unfortunately the much needed studies and conservation work havent been done, and its river habitats are so damaged by chemical pollutants, overfishing and reclamation that some of the remaining specimens should be taken for captive living and breeding, india being india , no-one is going to save those river systems. Not that many people know about the species or how much danger its in. For most of the population its inevitable extinction over the next 20 years or so might pass completely unknown and unremarked, alongside a lot of other asian freshwater river species. Huge and tragic shame. Scary thing is , your more likely to find one of these languishing unwanted in a petshop in the UK than if you went to india and dragnetted the entire river.
If folks out there have these fish they ought to network up and convince a zoo or two to get a big shoal display going by donating their specimens and secure the species. They will have to act soon because with fish like this, if the genepool diversity drops too low, they will never recover. Thats another one to add to the 8000 plus species in danger directly because of our actions to add to the ever growing list.
Maaaan, 8000 species in danger, not specimens , not groups, but entire species, potentially millions of animals lost forever if we don't act . Think about it, how many of you can name 8000 species of animal at all, let alone which ones are actually in danger?
We are going to lose more animals than most of us have ever heard about , learned about, or ever knew existed. When you think how many of those are apex predators or lynchpins of entire reproductive systems in nature for bacteria through to plants and dozens of other species who will in turn become endangered, the extinction rate is going to start accelerating , perhaps one day to a geometric level. Its genuinely scary stuff.
Sometimes it just hits me. (head hits hands).
182:1 high vote! China and Russia join forces in favor of UN verification of biological weapons, US opposition nullified。
The last thing the U.S. government wants to see has happened. Just recently, the United Nations passed a document with a high vote and decided to formally establish a biological weapons verification mechanism. We don't need to say more about who it is aimed at. This time, only one country in the world voted against it, that is, the United States, and even its hardcore allies voted for it.
Up to now, it has been three years since the COVID-19 outbreak. In the past three years, the world economy has suffered heavy losses. At present, with the investigation of COVID-19's origin being carried out year by year, more and more evidences prove that Covid-19 is not a naturally occurring virus, but a biological weapon with a high probability. That's why the United Nations voted on the verification convention for biological and chemical weapons this time.
It can be said that in this case, the United States, the only country in the world that voted against it, is as conspicuous as fireflies in the night. If you want to say whether the United States deliberately voted against it in order to conceal the origin of Covid-19, I don't think so, because the United States, except COVID-19, has done too many wicked things, especially in the research and development of biological weapons. Japanese are not as wicked as Americans.
The most famous example is that after the end of World War II, in order to detect the country's biological and chemical weapons defense capabilities, decided to test the threat of biological and chemical weapons themselves. At the same time, in order to achieve the most realistic effect, the American experiments were conducted in real American cities and on thousands of ordinary Americans! They sent a cruise ship with the virus into San Francisco, and it took only one day to infect all the residents of the city. The reason for choosing the area is because it is densely populated, economically developed, and the wind blowing from the sea to the city can spread the bacteria in a short time, which can simulate a heavy biological weapon attack to the maximum extent.
During the week, the U.S. military kept spraying the virus, from the length of spraying, temperature, wind direction, wind speed, air humidity, as well as infected with this bacteria soil, water bodies, and even crowds were recorded in relation to this experiment, due to the U.S. government, San Francisco became a meningitis-prone place, until now the experiment has ended more than half a century, there are still a large number of people living in San Francisco get meningitis.
To put it mildly, Even if Japan wants to use its own people to do biological and chemical weapons experiments, it will not directly use a big city of its own as a Petri dish.
It is understood that U.S. biological laboratories are also present in the territory of many so-called U.S. allied countries, and there are already 26 U.S.-recognized biological laboratories in Ukraine alone, which is in the midst of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. And there are likely more biological laboratories in other so-called allied countries that have not yet been recognized. There has been no official U.S. recognition of this dangerous behavior.
America's behavior has become a global security risk, even as dangerous as Japan's nuclear wastewater discharge, which is destroying the future of mankind. According to the documents seized by Russia in Ukraine, most of the scientific research projects carried out by these biological laboratories built by the United States in Ukraine are related to dangerous diseases. Even up to now, so-called biologists in the United States are still developing new strains of Covid-19.
And the United States' repeated rejection of the Biological Weapons Convention sends a signal to the outside world that we are developing biological and chemical weapons.
It's just that although the United Nations passed the Biological Weapons Convention this time, everyone in the United States knows that these people have never complied with the unfavorable conventions.
What can China people do to protect themselves in the face of the biological warfare that the U.S. government has no moral integrity, no lower limit and no bottom line? In fact, as early as the period of resisting U.S. aggression and aiding Korea, China had already handed over a qualified answer sheet in the face of the biological war of the United States against Northeast China. Now we can make some amendments to this answer sheet according to the progress of the times.
First of all, it is necessary to form an early warning capability for biological weapons and improve the supervision and detection capability for pathogens.
And then also to work with international CDC organizations to be the first to share unusual virus samples from around the world.
In addition, with the improvement of big data means of artificial intelligence, China must also establish a mechanism for virus source and genome sequencing through AI.
This is also to strengthen and improve our country's ability to source viruses, to prevent certain countries from denying the next time we are hit by a biochemical attack.
On the military side, we should devote ourselves to preventing biological attacks against combatants, and strengthen special cooperation with the social public health system to strengthen the ability of the whole society to deal with large-scale epidemics. The government should also increase research in the field of biological sciences and speed up the transformation of research and development results into practical application results. Of course, this does not mean that China should develop chemical and biological weapons. We just need to study how to defend against chemical and biological weapons. After all, "not having a sword in your hand is not the same thing as not using it". Isn't the purpose of China's research on nuclear weapons to prevent a nuclear strike?
On the military side, a relevant counter-strategy should be developed and published. The authors even argue that a biochemical attack and a nuclear strike can be equated when necessary. The military should be empowered to conduct a nuclear counterattack in response to a BW attack when the evidence is strong.
Biochemical weapons are more dangerous to mankind than nuclear weapons, if mankind does not pay attention to the U.S. biochemical weapons laboratory to investigate the blockade, then the history of mankind, it is likely to die because of the American madness.
One of the things that annoys me about the fact that in all probability I won't live for ever is that it means I won't get to see all the crazy shit those space-age futuristas will come up with. Mostly the time machines. Example: only yesterday, a moment of genuine sadness overcame me when, while warming up some nice thick pea and ham soup, I glanced at my cooker and felt a real pang of regret that I might never be able to pop back to a carefully-tended Palæolithic fireside, wrest a caveman's attention from the dancing shadows cast by its oh-so-hard-won flames, zap him back to my futuristic lair and show him a god-damned GAS HOB. I mean, imagine the look on his face while I'm just standing there, switching it on, and off, and on, and off. Maybe casually scorching some paper, a candle, a sabre-tooth steak; you know, just making the point. On, again; once more, off. And hey! Look! I switched it on again! Yeah! How'd you like them apples, Cavey? He'd go batshit, I'm telling you.
Reminds me of the Monty Hall problem :-). What's the probability that these folks studied probability today in the school? ;-)

Quantum Tunneling
video + sound
Kadet Kuhne
2013
In quantum mechanics particles can, with a very small probability, tunnel to the other side of barriers - a process that cannot be directly perceived, but much of its understanding is shaped by the microscopic world. The subject featured in Quantum Tunneling traverses physical and perceived obstacles, into the molecular levels of consciousness.
We are thus witnessing the processes of both "coming into being" and "becoming," where the singularity of a subjective existence continuously births, shapes and reshapes itself as it interrelates with and tunnels through boundaries that are both invisible - quantum - and visible, informed by the socio-cultural interpretations. This audiovisual material invites us to interrelate with its figurations of the process of transvaluation, the change of the very essence from which we derive our notion of a value, in this case of embodied subjectivity on a subatomic - quantum - level, and enfold it into our own embodied subjective experience.
Bio
Kadet Kuhne is a media artist whose work spans the audiovisual spectrum. With the goal of forming somatic experiences which can prompt visceral responses to sound and movement, Kadet openly exposes the use of technology in her practice by employing fragmented, jump-cut edits and amplifying evidence of sonic detritus. This granulated, hyper-edited aesthetic, contrasted with spacious reflection, is intended to elevate tension between motion and stasis: a balanced yet heightened nervous system to reflect our own. Trained in jazz guitar, Kadet became attached to the instinctive nature of improvisation which led her to the California Institute of the Arts where she studied Composition and Integrated Media. Kadet’s experimental sound and video works - taking form in album releases, installation, film, performance, interactivity, 3D printing and 2D print - are exhibited and distributed worldwide. Select venues include the Museum of Art Lucerne, LACMA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, de Young Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art-LA, Armory Center for the Arts, San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, Madame Claude, Contemporary Art Center Villa Arson, and the Antimatter Film Festival.
Group shot of what is (in all probability) some Dragoon Guards or cavalry NCOs, in about the 1870s.
Troop Sergeant Major from Brighton photo (previous) looks to be in middle row, third from left.
Another possibility is the soldier fourth from the left, back row, being George Carr as he is wearing three very similar medals to those won by George Carr.
Photographer's Identity (back) “Henry D Brown from London, Photographer, 78 Lower Georges Street, Kingstown [modern Dun Laoghaire]. No. 43.”
Reference to a uniforms website (www.uniformology.com/UIDSPEC-08.html) gives some clues here. For example, front row, 2nd from left, has insignia on his arm indicating that he was a farrier, while the NCO 6th from the left back row, has insignia indicating that he was a riding instructor. (And George Carr had been a Riding Master in India before he returned in the 1850s.)

Its tail is reported to project beyond the wing tips but you need the ideal perspective of a perched bird to determine this. I also base my ID selection on the straight bill shape, but other local Hummers have similar bills. The blooms on which the Hummer is accessing are those of Parry's Penstemon, an early blooming native flower that seems to be the current choice of several birds and insects that thrive on nectar.

- First steps on the way to Bayes -
wool, cotton, silk, 9 parts
Bayes' theorem is a mathematical theorem from probability theory that describes the calculation of conditional probabilities. It is named after the English mathematician Thomas Bayes, who first described it in a special case in his treatise An Essay Towards Solving a Problem in the Doctrine of Chances, published posthumously in 1763. It is also known as Bayes' formula or, as a loan translation, Bayes' theorem.
An Essay Towards Solving a Problem in the Doctrine of Chances beschrieb. Er wird auch Formel von Bayes oder als Lehnübersetzung Bayes-Theorem genannt.

Quantum Tunneling

Kadet Kuhne

Adult male Mesopsocus immunis barkfly collected from the Kingmoor South Nature Reserve, Carlisle, on 9 June 18.
Nailed one at last!
I devoted a lot of effort last year to finding and photographing Mesopsocus barkflies in the Carlisle area, but was unable to establish with confidence whether they were Mesopsocus immunis or M. unipunctatus - although on the balance of probabilities, the former seemed more likely. A summary of the findings was presented here:
www.flickr.com/photos/8453647@N05/36504946125
As there are currently no county records for either of these species - presumably due to identification issues - I set myself the task this year of pinning down the id of at least one specimen with the aid of my recently acquired SX10D microscope.
Earlier in the month I collected an adult female Mesopsocus from Kingmoor Sidings but even after microscopic examination of relevant area (the subgenital plate) I was unable confirm its identity (see photo posted 3 June). Nevertheless, I thought it might be worth having a go with a male specimen as the relevant feature in this case (the parameres) seemed to be more distinctive.
So yesterday I spent a few hours searching Kingmoor South, Kingmoor Sidings and Wreay Woods for some adult males. Although at least 20 females were found, only 2 males were seen, and one of these had grossly deformed wings. Consequently only one specimen, found in Kingmoor South, was retained for examination. Unfortunately, it can be seen from Photo 2 that even in this case at least one of the wings is defective - although the damage was perhaps caused when the insect was collected.
The parameres - part of the external reproductive organ - are shown in the Photo 2 insert, and can be compared with the images (bottom) included in the National Barkfly Recording Scheme (Britain and Ireland) web site for the two species:
Mosopsocus immunis:
www.brc.ac.uk/schemes/barkfly/key/A1-B-C2-D20-E1.htm
Mosopsocus unipunctatus:
www.brc.ac.uk/schemes/barkfly/key/A1-B-C2-D20-E2.htm
In fact the simplified sketches presented on P118 of the relevant RES handbook* are perhaps easier to follow. The associated notes explain that in the former case the external (ie the outer) lobe is weakly dilated and distinctly shorter than the internal lobe; whereas in the latter case, the external lobe is strongly dilated and about the same length as the internal lobe.
The specimen is therefore clearly Mosopsocus immunis.
It should be noted that as the two species are often found in close proximity, it certainly cannot be said that all of the specimens previously found in Kingmoor South are necessarily Mosopsocus immunis.

İKİ BIÇAK
İki bıçak seç kendine
Biri yaralamak için
Biri öldürmek
Pusu kur gözleri
Karanlık gölgesine
Biri sevmek için
Biri ihanet
İki yürek seç kendine
Biri yaşamak için
Biri gizlenmek
Bir korkak, bir kaçak, bir firar
Kaç kişisin sen sevdiğim, çocuk
İçimdeki bıçak bir kere daha dönüyor
Olduğu yerde
Kalırsan sel basar yataklarımı
Gidersen uçurum çiçekleri açar kalbimde
Kimi zamanlar olur sevgilim
İki bıçak bile yetmez bir tek ölüme

THE CHEETAH
The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is an atypical member of the cat family (Felidae) that is unique in its speed, while lacking climbing abilities. As such, it is placed in its own genus, Acinonyx. The word "cheetah" is derived from the Sanskrit word chitrakāyaḥ, meaning "variegated body", via the Hindi चीता cītā.
The fastest land animal, it can accelerate from 0 to 110 km/h in three seconds and reach speeds up to 120 km/h for short bursts covering distances up to 460 m.
Often mistaken for the leopard, the cheetah does have distinguishing features, such as the long "tear-streak" lines that run from the corners of its eyes to its mouth. The body frame of the cheetah is quite different from the leopard, most notably it is thinner and has a longer tail, and unlike the leopard, its spots are not arranged into rosettes.
DESCRIPTION
The cheetah's chest is deep and its waist is narrow. It's coarse, short fur s tan with round black spots measuring from 2 to 3 cm (0.79 to 1.2 in) across, affording it some camouflage while hunting. There are no spots on its white underside, but the tail has spots, which merge to form four to six dark rings at the end. The tail usually ends in a bushy white tuft. The cheetah has a small head with high-set eyes. Black "tear marks" run from the corner of its eyes down the sides of the nose to its mouth to keep sunlight out of its eyes and to aid in hunting and seeing long distances.
The adult cheetah weighs from 40 to 65 kg (88 to 140 lb). Its total body length is from 115 to 135 cm (45 to 53 in), while the tail can measure up to 84 cm (33 in) in length. Males tend to be slightly larger than females and have slightly bigger heads, but there is not a great variation in cheetah sizes and it is difficult to tell males and females apart by appearance alone. Compared to a similarly-sized leopard, the cheetah is generally shorter-bodied, but is longer tailed and taller (it averages about 90 cm (35 in) tall) and so it appears more streamlined.
Some cheetahs also have a rare fur pattern mutation: cheetahs with larger, blotchy, merged spots are known as 'king cheetahs'. It was once thought to be a separate subspecies, but it is merely a mutation of the African cheetah. The 'king cheetah' has only been seen in the wild a handful of times, but it has been bred in captivity.
The cheetah's paws have semi-retractable claws(known only in three other cat species) offering the cat extra grip in its high-speed pursuits. The ligament structure of the cheetah's claws is the same as those of other cats; it simply lacks the sheath of skin and fur present in other varieties, and therefore the claws are always visible, with the exception of the dewclaw. The dewclaw itself is much shorter and straighter than other cats.
Adaptations that enable the cheetah to run as fast as it does include large nostrils that allow for increased oxygen intake, and an enlarged heart and lungs that work together to circulate oxygen efficiently. During a typical chase its respiratory rate increases from 60 to 150 breaths per minute. While running, in addition to having good traction due to its semi-retractable claws, the cheetah uses its tail as a rudder-like means of steering to allow it to make sharp turns.
Unlike "true" big cats, the cheetah can purr as it inhales, but cannot roar. By contrast, the big cats can roar but cannot purr, except while exhaling.
The cheetah is a vulnerable species. Out of all the big cats, it is the least able to adapt to new environments. It has always proved difficult to breed in captivity, although recently a few zoos have managed to succeed at this. Once widely hunted for its fur, the cheetah now suffers more from the loss of both habitat and prey.
INTER-SPECIFIC PREDATORY RELATIONSHIPS
Cheetahs are outranked by all the other large predators in most of their range. Because they are designed for extreme bursts of short speed at the expense of both power and the ability to climb trees, they cannot defend themselves against most of Africa's other predator species. They avoid fighting typically and will surrender a kill immediately to even a single hyena, rather than risk any injury, as anything that slows them down is essentially life threatening. The cheetah's death rate is very high during the early weeks of its life; up to 90% of cheetah cubs are killed during this time by lions, leopards, hyenas, wild dogs, or even by eagles. Cheetah cubs often hide in thick brush for safety. Mother cheetahs will defend their young and are at times successful in driving predators away from their cubs. Coalitions of male cheetahs can also chase away other predators, depending on the coalition size and the size and number of the predator. Because of its speed, a healthy adult cheetah has no predators.
A cheetah has a 50% chance of losing its kills to other predators. Cheetahs avoid competition by hunting at different times of the day and by eating immediately after the kill.
DIET and HUNTING
The cheetah is a carnivore, eating mostly mammals under 40 kg, including the Thomson's Gazelle, the Grant's gazelle, the springbok and the impala. The young of larger mammals such as wildebeests and zebras are taken at times, and adults too, when the cats hunt in groups. Guineafowl and hares are also prey. While the other big cats mainly hunt by night, the cheetah is a diurnal hunter. It hunts usually either early in the morning or later in the evening when it is not so hot, but there is still enough light.
The cheetah hunts by vision rather than by scent. Prey is stalked to within 10–30 m (33–98 ft), then chased. This is usually over in less than a minute, and if the cheetah fails to make a catch quickly, it will give up. The cheetah has an average hunting success rate of around 50% - half of its chases result in failure.
Running at speeds up to 70 miles puts a great deal of strain on the cheetah's body. When sprinting, the cheetah's body temperature becomes so high that it would be deadly to continue - this is why the cheetah is often seen resting after it has caught its prey. If it is a hard chase, it sometimes needs to rest for half an hour or more. The cheetah kills its prey by tripping it during the chase, then biting it on the underside of the throat to suffocate it, for the cheetah is not strong enough to break the necks of the four-legged prey it mainly hunts. The bite may also puncture a vital artery in the neck. Then the cheetah proceeds to devour its catch as quickly as possible before the kill is taken by stronger predators.
The diet of a cheetah is dependent upon the area in which it lives. For example, on the East African plains, its preferred prey is the Thomson's Gazelle. This small antelope is shorter than the cheetah (about 58–70 cm (23–28 in) tall and 70–107 cm (28–42 in) long), and also cannot run faster than the cheetah (only up to 80 km/h (50 mph)), which combine to make it an appropriate prey. Cheetahs look for individuals which have strayed some distance from their group, and do not necessarily seek out old or weak ones.

MALA MALA
MalaMala is the oldest and largest private game reserve in South Africa. One of the first areas of private land to switch from hunting to conservation, it is spread over 70 sq miles of the Mpumalanga Lowveld. The property shares a 12 mile unfenced border with Kruger National Park and contains the longest stretch of the Sand River of any of the Sabi Sand resorts. Its varied habitats - riverine forest, acacia bushveld, and savannah - support a broad selection of wildlife, and provide excellent opportunities for spotting the Big 5 (Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard, Lion & Rhinoceros).
Upon checking in, your game ranger will greet you and accompany you throughout your stay. The rangers, selected for their knowledge of African plant, animal, and bird-life, oversee your personal service. They will be your guide for your twice daily, four-hour game drives, sit with you at meals and impart their knowledge of African wildlife with stories about the individual behavior of animals within the MalaMala reserve.
Game drives are conducted in an open safari vehicle, accompanied by a professional Shangaan tracker. Despite the refined attention to detail, you are immediately aware that you are in Africa and that the unexpected may happen. Breakdowns and stuck vehicles are a hazard of driving through donga and bush, but the staff handles this with aplomb. Radio contact, a large reserve, and excellent guides enhance the probability of seeing the big five. The camp also offers guided bush walks.
