A new way to 3D print, developed at the University of Michigan, uses two lights to control the solidification of resin, enabling complex shapes to be pulled from a vat at 100 times the print speed of conventional 3D printers, and was demonstrated by printing a block M in a U-M chemical engineering lab in Ann Arbor, MI on December 6, 2018.

This project was co-led by Timothy Scott, associate professor of chemical engineering and Mark Burns, T.C. Chang Professor of Engineering and professor of chemical engineering and biomedical engineering.

Scan, Barnhart's Stock Cut Catalogue, 1910

"Barnhart's new stock cut catalogue is a publication that should be in the hands of all printers. It contains about two hundred pages, each page listing as many cuts as it will hold so an idea of the number can be imagined. It is worth having for quick reference."Walden's Stationer and Printer, Volume 31

This is the "S-Printing Horse" in front of Heidelberg's Printing Media Academy. It is 13 meters high and is cited to be the largest horse sculpture in the world. Its various elements symbolically represent different parts of document printing procedures.

It is a very simple operation to change the type height on the press. Just remove the rails and then expand the holes a little (approximately 0.5 mm) with a file. Now it is possible to adjust the press to work with French / German type height (23.56 mm) on the same way as on other table tops.

The client for one of the shops I've just completed sells organic clothing and she's got this on display... It's a hand made printing stamp - the patterns are made out of hand-folded bronze... Must've taken someone months to make it (not bad for a few rupees). Pity about the blurring at the top though - I wanna go back and shoot it with a better depth of field (watch this space)

Used in Edinburgh

Further Notes: Prior to the Digital Age, newspapers, books, posters, tickets, forms, and all other types of printed-paper were produced with a printing press. To form the words, moveable type was used and print blocks would be used along side to add images or decorations around the text. A print block is also known as a letterpress cut or a printing die.
