Wooden handled bookfinishing tool. Head of tool is a brass wheel with type letters on edges. These letters were wheeled across the cover of a book.
Accession Number: hh.4726.2.88
Finishing tools primarily could be divided into two categories: rolls and stamps. Rolls consisted of wheels with continuous designs engraved on the circumference, used to create long lines. Fillets–which made plain, straight lines–were the most common rolls. A binder would own several line fillets of different gauges, as well as fillets containing anywhere from one to four parallel lines. Whether working in leather or cloth, binders finally tooled the design and title into the material by making impressions with heated finishing tools. After making a blind impression, the binder sometimes pressed gold leaf into the indentation with the same tools.

A Swanage tobacconists printing set???
These were together in a metal pencil case, 2 standard 'cigarette' printing blocks, 2 standard blocks of the Swanage crest (one steel on wood and one brass) A brass plate with the tobacconists details then the curious brass round blocks with a hole through the middle and a screw thread hole that I assume held them on a rod. What are they and how were they used?
The address reads
Manufacturers :-
Messrs Bick's
(Proprietor E. Phillips)
2&3, Exeter Place Swanage
Bick's certainly existed during the 2nd world war, caught fire and then re established, may have been there earlier but has gone now.
The round blocks say Bick's, Best Virginia, crest and the image of the garland.
Any suggestions on what they are or history on the shop most welcome.
Wooden plough. Two pieces of wood joined together by central wooden screw. Plough has metal groove in which the blade would sit.
Accession Number: SH.2009.357
The plough is used for trimming the edges of books. The guillotine has largely superseded this method on account of the greater output, speed and accuracy of the cut. It only used for fine bindings, or for amateur use where the trade is treated as a handicraft, it is still employed.
The plough is used in a press and they are both usually put on a stand. The plough consists of two uprights connected by a wooden screw. The whole is capable of moving backwards and forwards along two slides, which are attached to the press. The right-hand portions are also capable of small incremental motions to the left, by slowly turning the handle of the screw. The plough knife is fixed to the base by means of a bolt, whereby it can be removed easily for sharpening or regrinding. When the knife is properly adjusted the knife should travel level with top of the press.

Prints I'll be showing at an exhibition at the Resolution Gallery in Johannesburg, opening on July 10th 2008. They're made using software created in Processing that allows gestural manipulation of photographic images - resulting in these rather densely textured prints.

This is a sculpture based on the Hopf fibration, stereographically projected from the standard embedding of S^3 in R^4 to R^3. The fibers are shown by rectangular cross-section tubes, each edge of the tube is a fiber.
Here are some exciting images of the first test piece of my current development for 3D printing... but can anyone guess what it is?
