Large format printing the cheap (and slow) way, joining lots of teeny little printouts together with a lightbox and Diamond tape.
You may think the nine shown here aren't too bad, but then that's just to fit in the largest document wallet I could find - fullsize posters are made from several laminated sheets.

Couldn't quite get a decent shot of it, but still thought it was handsome enough to look at here. The details on this workhorse machine are pretty amazing!

Location: The John Work Garrett Library
Call No.: QL 425.G7 S69 1812 FOLIO
Original archival hand colored pattern plates for James Sowerby's"Mineral conchology of Great Britain, or, Coloured figures and descriptions of those remains of testaceous animals, or shells which have been preserved at various times, and depths in the earth." This work was published over a 34 year period (1812-1846). The final parts were produced by his son James De Carle, with the help of George Brettingham. When complete, the published work contained 650 colored plates, each with a letter-press description, in seven volumes
Copper plate engravings in black printing ink, hand colored with watercolor, with iron gall ink and graphite inscriptions.
The fist is carved from standard plywood. The text is carved from a block of poplar on which a piece of bicycle inner tube had been cemented. The rubber gives a much darker and more uniform impression than the plywood.
Type is a small block of metal or wood bearing a raised letter or character on the upper end that leaves a printed impression when inked and pressed on paper.
Prior to hot metal composition type was produced in type foundries. In Edinburgh the most famous type foundry was Miller & Richard who kept many of Edinburgh's printing houses supplied with type.

SWEET CALL AND RESPONSE
By Steve MacDonald and Dana F. Smith
2012, San Francisco, California
edition of 25
Sweet Call and Response was developed with an emphasis on experimentation with the materials - digital printing on canvas, photo collage, machine sewn thread, and sewn collage.
Instinctively, messages are sent to attract a response. This book is a visual poem about communication through the interplay of universal symbols and photographic images.
The book is printed entirely on canvas specially coated for digital printing with pigmented inks. A variety of sewing techniques, such as patchwork and embroidery, are applied to the pages over the ink. Each page of the book is treated with meticulous stitching executed by hand using a home sewing machine. Pages are affected on both sides by the stitching. Inverse images create a visual echo woven into the design of the book, which propels the narrative ever forward.

For executing the handmade collage were printed several A3 size boards (around 10) with the photos in different scales. This allowed us to have some flexibility by not having to go back to the original every time it needed to be scaled.
