Limited edition hand carved woodblock prints on Hanji paper.
Image size 4"x6" paper size roughly 5"x7"
Dear friends,
Here are creation process notes for the 11th annual zodiac print by Nathalie Roland.
The year of the wood horse (January 31, 2014-February 18, 2015) is researched and meditated upon for a number of weeks. Themes of alliances, partnerships, good luck, romance and prosperity emerge. The previous year of the snake was about letting go, editing, cutting, trimming and shedding to become new while the year of the horse is about growth, progress, healing and what we can build together. How will we participate in change in the new year?
Amidst inquiry and contemplation of celestial chargers and a cavalry of light, dear friends return from Korea with a gift of Hanji paper, a healer’s invitation to spend an afternoon with horses by the sea is accepted and sound embrace (a new endeavor using audio frequencies for wellness) requests support. Hanji paper is traditional handmade Korean paper used for the oldest woodcut to date, a copy of the Pure Light Dharani Sutra. The paper gift bearing love birds married on the 7th of July, the day heavenly magpies form a bridge for separated lovers according to Asian mythology. The horses of Blue Moon ranch in Half Moon bay snack and prance in cascades of sunbeams with pacific ocean shimmers in the background. Information about sound healing frequencies is gathered.
Further investigation of the horse year leads down a tangent to the legend of Guan Yin, the bodhisattva associated with mercy, compassion, unconditional love and salvation. She is a healer, a protector of water and is known as the universal listener or “sound perceiver”. One of her 33 manifestations in buddhist scriptures describes a supernatural tiger rescuing her from execution by taking her to a hell-like realm of the dead where she plays music causing flowers to blossom around her, transforming the hell into a paradise.
After weeks of research and meditation, an image begins to form and a drawing is made on the wood. Through 4 days of intensive carving the drawing is transformed as the wood grain presents its own influence into the image. Carving action clarify lines and intention, presenting an image of a beloved horse and GuanYin ready to print. Over the next few days the Hanji paper is torn to size, ink is rolled on to the wood, the paper is placed upon the inked woodblock and even pressure is applied through a manual table top press in San Francisco’s mission district. The paper is gently peeled of from the block to reveal the freshly inked image. Once the ink is dry the limited edition is numbered and signed. 11 of the 38 prints go to the 11 people who pledged their support in a Sound Embrace fundraiser.
11 flowers adorn the horses neck and 11 jewels crown GuanYin’s head referencing the 11 heads she was granted by buddha Amitabha to help her hear and heal those in need. 20 light birds gather in the top corner and GuanYin’s shoulders carry 14 stars for 2014. The center of the horse’s head is covered by a lotus flower in bloom for aspirations of collective enlightenment.
May we build our dreams of love and music together in the new year. Turn on your love light and let it SHINE!

Here's what I'm working on today. I had difficulty obtaining even tone in the sky area during wiping. I think a drop or two of plate oil will help to even it out.

This is the second attempt of three only 'limited edition' solar prints I made. These prints were printed directly onto 'Arches' paper and look quite nice framed. I prefer this to the silver background of the previously uploaded print.
(I am a total beginner to printmaking of any form!)
I just realized when I looking at my Flickr account that I never posted my print from the Baren exchange based on typography. Following is what I wrote about it on my Etsy site:
This hand pulled print was part of an exchange based on the theme typography. I chose to base my print on the Ampersand because I like its history. Until the late 1800's it was referred to as the 27th letter of the alphabet, and supposedly got its name from the recitation of the alphabet - x, y, z et per se and.
The print was created using 6 linoleum blocks and was in an edition of 50. The image size is approximately 5" x 7.5" with a surrounding border for matting. It is printed on tissue thin handmade Japanese Sekishu paper with water based Akua Kolor inks.

Here’s a monotype made today after I finished printing two new photograms. I’m calling this process presso-gram since I have no idea what the formal name of this process is called. I placed the cheese cloth that I used to wipe the photogram plates directly on the press bed, covered the cheese cloth with paper, and ran it through the press under heavy pressure. What’s really cool about the print, is the cheese cloth left a deep, grid-like impression on the paper. I love this print. When it dries in a few days, I’ll scan it so you can see the impression and texture on the paper.
