The 12th annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party (BABBP) rolls into town this coming weekend, bringing pitmasters and barbecue styles from across the nation to Manhattan. Started way back in 2002 by Danny Meyer and erstwhile Blue Smoke pitmaster Kenny Callaghan, the event has had a seminal impact on barbecue in the city, giving many New Yorkers their first taste of authentic barbecue. This year the lineup includes pitmasters from eight states as well as an unprecedented number of local participants.

The 9th Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party took place in Madison Square Park June 11-12, 2011. The weekend-long event occurs every June and brings together the country’s top pitmasters who cook up their award-winning food for over a 100,000 barbecue enthusiasts.
Set against the beautiful backdrop of Madison Square Park, the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party attracts people from near and far to sustain and celebrate America’s authentic culinary and musical traditions.

Top pitmaster and restaurateur Melissa Cookston, two-time overall world champion and the winningest woman in barbecue, presents Southern Delta and barbecue recipes full of smoke and spice, as well as stories filled with the trademark fire and vinegar that make her a TV favorite, too.

Marlowe’s Ribs & Restaurant was founded in 1974 by Tony and Lucy Gigliotti, who moved from Pittsburgh to Memphis. They named the restaurant after their daughter Marlo. The restaurant started as the Whitehaven Ranch House, serving steaks and burgers, but later switched to barbecue after Tony learned the art of smoking meats from a local pitmaster. The restaurant is located near Graceland, Elvis Presley’s home, and has a collection of Elvis memorabilia and a free pink limo service for guests staying at nearby hotels.
