A couple of times a year during the winter a barge loaded with lumber arrives in Seward and is railed up to Anchorage for SBS, Spenard Builders Supply. ARR 4007 leads a train laden with lumber over the top of the 3% grade at Divide. In the far distance is Resurrection Bay
Piercing the Shadows
I know this is a bit of an unconventional "train" photo but I do hope some of you appreciate it.
One of the prettiest roads you might ever drive on is Winona Road the reaches through parts of Belknap and Grafton Counties in the great state of New Hampshire.
It is the scenic route between the communities of Meredith and Ashland and roughly parallels the old Concord and Montreal Railroad, later B&M's White Mountain Division Mainline. Now largely devoid of trains, these rails see no more than a dozen or two movements a year. But each fall for four weekends the Winnipesaukee Scenic runs foliage specials north from Meredith to Plymouth.
Here is one of those returning on a warm Sunday afternoon approaching the sunshine where the tracks cross over Winona Road on a narrow bridge at Milepost 41 (from Concord) on these lonely rails now owned by the state.

Found all over Australia these large flightless birds are instantly recognisable due to their sheer size and their incredible speed.
Emus are very inquisitive creatures and have very large, red-brown, piecing eyes. They also have two sets of eyelids, one for blinking and the other for keeping the dust out.
We are lucky to have a few in a pen at our camp.

During one of the last regular coal turns from Tower colliery to Aberthaw power station, an unidentified freightliner class 66 makes its way south past Devils Bridge at Trefforest, south Wales.
Unfortunately, the regular coal runs seem to have ceased with only occasional DBC trains being the last remaining freight traffic on this line.
Pleasantly surprised by the power of the self-portrait on the top of my planned festive reading, looking forward to next year's big Renoir exhibitions...

Vultures are odd and weird looking creatures, but I always get fascinated by their appearance...

Taken at Kielder Forest, Northumberland
Day 2 of chasing led me to west central Kansas. With the thought of it being "the day before the day", I had a bit of optimism that something would produce in the area.
After bailing on storm number 2, I dropped south out of Wilson, KS to catch a tornado warned storm northeast of Hoisington, KS. I was greeted by barber pole updraft as it was the best structure I would see that day. I was too close to the storm to capture the whole thing with the lightning strike piercing through the updraft, but I didn't want to risk missing anything in an effort to find a new spot.
The headlight and ditch lights pierce through the thick smoke as Pacific National units, NR41 & 8025 power upgrade through Bundanoon while working Pacific National's 8126 container service from the new Parkes Logistic Terminal to the Sydney Freight Terminal at Chullora. There currently is a temporary speed restriction imposed on the up main line as 40km/h for a distance, including through the platform. The thick smoke is a result from all the devastating bushfires around NSW. Saturday, 21st December 2019.
