This is actually from last season folks when I was lucky enough to have almost daily encounters with a Pileated family. (This shot was taken the day before the fledglings left the nest.) Sadly, this tree (which looked to have been home to many a woodpecker) was blown down this past winter in a wind storm. I think this young male and his sister still hang out in this park, but I've yet to get any decent shots of either of them since they left the nest last year. Guess I was just kind of missing these guys and came across this photo I hadn't posted before.

This is hard to believe, but this is a graceful swallow-tailed kite at the beginning of a dive! It looks like it was shot out of a cannon. Take a look at the next picture to see how it works out. WSR

My friend Jon Bailey came a gnats ass from stepping on this midget faded rattlesnake. Despite the close encounter, the snake never became agitated. For more information:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crotalus_oreganus_concolor
Sometimes I wish we all lived way back when we lived off the land and didn't worry about having so much STUFF!!
From this perspective, on the Blowing Rock observation deck, it appears as if the town of Blowing Rock is bordering on the edge of annihilation with this apocalyptic looking cloud cover hovering above it.

Our 2nd winner uploaded their photo on Flickr with their time zone and it was not US(SL) time. So all the winner "FOLLOW" our rule.

Flickr system sometimes confuses people about time (SL is also) but I am so glad we can have many people to our event from all over the world<3

Taken in Yellowstone after a snow storm. Kestrel is perched on a rock covered with snow except for a small portion of the rock.
I found a large group of Turk's Cap lilies growing near large populations of Aristolochia and the rather predictable result was a mob of pipevine swallowtails nectaring on the lilies.
Many of the pipevine swallowtails were coated with pollen from the lilies. This one thankfully had just a light dusting.
