Perfectly preserved coastal fortress built by Henry VIII. In partnership with its twin, Pendennis, it guards the entrance of the Fal Estuary.
The clover-leaf shaped St Mawes Castle is the best preserved and most elaborately decorated of the coastal fortresses, built by Henry VIII to defend the coast from invasion by France and Spain. It stands on the opposite side of the Fal Estuary from its sister castle of Pendennis. Unlike Pendennis, it has seen few changes over the centuries and still retains its original Tudor character.
Unlike Pendennis, St Mawes was not easily defended from the landward side and soon fell to the Parliamentarian forces in 1646. In fact, the governor realised it was hopeless to try to defend against an attack from the land and surrendered without a shot having been fired. St Mawes Castle was not refortified until the end of the 19th century, but was used as part of the coastal defences during the two World Wars. The two castles of St Mawes and Pendennis form the Cornish end of the chain of coastal forts built by Henry VIII, which include Portland, Deal and Walmer Castles.
The castle was constructed half way up the hillside on the eastern side of the Fal Estuary to protect the large inland expanse of water known as Carrick Roads. It was built with a central tower overlooking three large circular bastions, in the design of a clover leaf, to provide a wide area from which gun ports could cover all angles of approach to the estuary. It is one of the finest examples of Tudor military architecture, its stonework embellished with elaborate gargoyles and detailed windows. The Royal Coat of Arms is carved into the stonework above the entrance, and there are various other carved inscriptions throughout the interior of the castle.
The central tower was constructed over four floors and is entered by a bridge to the third floor. Inside the tower are various decorations including carved wooden representations of a cherub, a monk and fleur-de-lis, and the inevitable Tudor roses. The forward gun room has several cannons on display there are sockets in the walls that originally held large beams to support the tackle needed to manoeuvre the large cannon. Facilities include toilets and a shop which serves drinks and ice creams. There is level access to the castle for wheelchair users, but access to the upper floors is difficult for the disabled. Parking is available close to the entrance. St Mawes Castle is open daily throughout the year, apart from at Christmas and New Year.
Just how I'm feeling right now, after a day out with the kids, I'm back home, feet up. Feeling perfectly peachy!
After taking this photo, I took this flower. It's not the most beautiful flower I've ever picked for my wife but it is beautifully unique. You can see where it has been damaged, the combination of sun and rain and all the other elements of weather have taken it's toll, but yet, it is still a flower, and still beautiful. It is perfectly imperfect. Just like each person is unique, each person is beautiful. Reguardless of how much life has taken it's toll on you, you are still beautiful! You are perfectly imperfect.
Saab seen at the Historical Weekend in Den Helder with hundreds of classic cars, historic vehicles, old engines and tractors, military vehicles and fire engines with beautiful old cargo ships, fishing boats, steam tugs and other sailing maritime heritage make for a great event .

Cat Tien spider, most likely Pandercetes sp.; it was amazing how many of these we saw when hiking through the park!
i was walking through palma's narrow streets when i stumbled upon this scene—a clash of beauty and rebellion etched into the walls of a city that has seen it all. to the left, a face once perfect, defaced by frustration or art, a silent cry against ideals. to the right, the untouched—immaculate and unreachable. between them, a man lost in the glow of his screen, unaware of the stories around him, yet perfectly placed. he leans like a bridge, a balance of the raw and the refined. palma breathes this contrast—between what is perfect and what we dare to question.

Candid street portrait, with some lovely eye contact, taken in Glasgow, Scotland. I was just hoping that a suitably interesting character would step into the gorgeous sliver of sunlight as I slowly hobbled along Argyle Street. When I saw this man I just had to time the shot for that light, I loved the perfectly trimmed curve of his beard that frames his face so well in the light.

by Mother Nature. I found this small branch on the ground while visiting Ninigret Park in Charlestown, Rhode Island in late October, searching for Thomas Dambo's Trolls in the park.
Usually, when I'm photographing foxes I get nothing more than a fleeting glimpse. But every now and then one will pose just perfectly for me.

On May 26th I started my first multi-day hiking trip into the mountains of La Palma. I choose parts of the GR-131 trail - better known as Ruta El Bastón - the famous trail of the Transvulcania Ultra Marathon. I started from Regufio El Pilar aiming to hike two days to Roque de Los Muchachos. On the way there is a cabin - the Refugio Punta de Los Roques - where I had planned to spend a night for nightscape photography. The Refugio is perfectly located and offers some breathtaking views
I used a simple camera setup to save weight, so I decided to take my all time favourite 50mm lens. In the end, the main panorama became a composition of 97 single photos. Meanwhile I was almost laying on the ground while shooting due to the freezing wind. Great adventure!
Afterwards I started a documentary project about astro-landscape-photography at the Canary Islands to share my adventures, background stories and well deserved fails of these adventures. You can check the Project and Photo Series at www.behance.net/gallery/95411577/La-Palma-Starlight-Reser...

Team WeeeIndustries joining the race in style! Goes perfectly together with Chris' Weeebulba's Podracer.
Built for the Space Rally Racers category of this year's Space Jam, this one was a frustratingly fun exercise in shape and color. Race shop co-owner Chris Perron might have had an influence with that ;)
Thanks, Chris, for the valuable feedback and boosts of motivation along the way, and thanks to my mechanic Marin for sourcing some spare parts on really short notice!

Day 248/365
The larger than life photo doesn't really show how perfectly this small caterpillar imitates the dry edge of a leaf--even to the green stripe visually connecting the insect to a leaf and breaking its outline into two small brown sections. Actively looking for caterpillars, I immediately knew it was one, but still had to look at it for several seconds to confirm it and figure out its parts. (This side view is also a better angle than I had to view it.)
Likely Schizura ipomaeae, the morning-glory prominent moth or false unicorn caterpillar.
