Construction crews were busy along the SR 520 corridor during the Nov. 14 - 17 weekend closure. Critical work activities included demolition of the R.H. Thomson “Ramps to Nowhere” over SR 520, necessary tree removal within project limits in the Montlake area and installation of piles on Foster Island and near the Montlake shoreline for the SR 520 West Approach Bridge North Project. Crews working on the Eastside Transit and HOV Project installed drainage systems along the 108th Avenue East direct-access ramps. Find out more about the new SR 520 on our website.
The SR 520 West Approach Bridge North Project is the next construction phase of the SR 520 Program. When complete in summer 2017, WABN will be built to modern earthquake standards and connect westbound-traveling vehicles, transit/HOV, bicycles and pedestrians from the new floating bridge to the Montlake area.

This Harbor Seal at Pigeon Point seems to be quite content and in perfect balance with life on a lovely winter day!
This is my clam digging gull - he would find a clam, jump up, then dive to grab it as if it might get away - then fly up to make the death drop. I just like his feet and the splash on this one.

Haim Ben-Menachem was born on April 21, 1898, and died on March 10, 1967.
Director-General of Israel Posts (1952–1964)
This First Day Cover, signed in 1959, bears the autograph of Haim Ben-Menachem, a pivotal figure in the administrative and technological foundation of the State of Israel. As the first Director-General of the Ministry of Posts, Ben-Menachem was the "architect" of the very postal system that issued this commemorative Tel Aviv Jubilee stamp.
Historical Significance:
Foundational Leadership: Appointed in 1952, he oversaw the massive transition from British Mandate infrastructure to a sovereign Israeli network, including the expansion of the national telephone grid and the establishment of the Postal Bank (Bank HaDoar) in 1953.
Role in 1959: At the time of this signature, he was exactly midway through his 12-year tenure (1952–1964) as the first Director-General of the Ministry of Posts.
Intelligence Legacy: Prior to his civil service, Ben-Menachem was a senior member of the SHAI (the Haganah’s intelligence arm). He played a vital role in the technical and administrative operations that predated the modern Israeli intelligence community.
The 1959 Jubilee: At the time of this signature, Ben-Menachem was at the height of his career, coordinating the philatelic tributes for Tel Aviv’s 50th anniversary. This specific cover features the Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium cancel, an iconic symbol of the city’s educational heritage.
Provenance Note: This signed specimen is part of an elite "Signature Series" featuring 40 of Israel’s most prominent founders, scientists, and leaders from the 1959 Jubilee celebrations.
The Four Buildings - The stamp depicts four iconic public buildings that symbolized the historical and modern development of Tel Aviv at the time:
Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium: The city's first high school (originally located on Herzl Street; demolished in 1962 to make way for the Shalom Meir Tower).
The Great Synagogue: Located on Allenby Street.
The Mann Auditorium: Home of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (now the Charles Bronfman Auditorium).
The Histadrut Building: The headquarters of the national labor federation on Arlozorov Street.
Note: Each cover features a unique, dual-language (Hebrew/English) official handstamp identifying the signatory's title and role, positioned beneath the original ink autograph.
