Male Northern Flicker peeking out of its nesting hole. The sawdust on the bill likely indicates he is still digging it. Les Sherman Park, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. 2 May 2025
Where did mom go? In what seemingly appears to be a game of peek-a-boo, a female monk seal shovels her face into the beach sand as the pup looks around. After taking her 15-day old pup for a swimming lesson, the adult galumphed ashore and nosed into the sand. This is a frequently observed behavior attributed to a variety of reasons ranging from sun screening to molting itch to sensory attenuation. Whatever the motive, it was anthropomorphically amusing to watch. Monk seals are, unfortunately, among the rarest of marine mammals. A recent census indicated a slight increase in the total population to an estimated 1,600 individuals. The encouraging population increase may be due to diligent conservation efforts.
I guess that title is appropriate since Halloween is in a few days.
This was a fun catch after aligning it with TPE. I went to the location, but did't realize the park "closes" at sunset.. well the moon didn't rise till about 30 minutes after sunset. I idled the car by the entrance of the park, hoping to flag down the Park Ranger and tell him my plans, but nope. Nothing. No one came by.
Last thing I wanted was a park violation.
As about 6:38pm came about, I saw a peek of the moon over the hills.
My heart pounded.
Adrenaline kicked in.
I forgot everything I was worried about and just went with it.
Drove the car half a mile down the road, unloaded my gear, and shot.
The gate was still opened when I left the park.
Not a soul in sight..
Chewie peeking out from under his auxiliary Golden on our morning walkie this morning.
He and his pal were rescued just before being surrendered to our local high kill shelter on our worst/busiest week of the year here in Las Vegas. As many as 200 dogs a day are surrendered to the over capacity shelter.

We've only had him overnight, but so far Chewie appears to be fearless, affectionate, cat & dog friendly, quite the chow hound, comes when he's called, seems to know "sit" and makes the coolest little Chewbaca sounds...Also he comes with a 2 year old Golden Retriever...
Adopt Chewie and his auxiliary Golden here:
Red Squirrel - Sciurus vulgaris
Was foraging behind a stump and kept popping his head up just to make sure I had not moved.

Not every sunrise on the beach ought to be posted. This is just an average picture, but there's a bird in it. The birds always win.
One last attempt from our pumpkin vine to actually grow a pumpkin this year. If it happens, considering how late in the year it is, it may be one of the tiniest pumpkins ever, like walnut size?
Every year in October we throw a Harvest Fest for our backyard visitors. Most years we've been lucky enough to have a pumpkin vine or two weaving throughout the arena we set up.
But the last few years, nature has not cooperated, whether it's been weather or critters creating havoc, there's been no vines. This year, after planting dozens of seeds, multiple times, one finally survived - this one - and has been struggling the entire spring and summer. It's even bloomed a few times, but nothing came from those blooms, and the jury is still out on whether this bloom, peeking through those leaves, will fulfil its destiny.
