I have found myself increasingly drawn to portraits for each topic in this years 52 weeks project. I'm not sure why it has become this way, but the plan for next week is a still life to break the monotony of portraiture! As Chiaroscuro is an Italian word, my aim for this shot was to create an image that had the feel of a renaissance painting, softly lit facial features plunging into darkness in the extremities.

This was shot using my Godox AD360 in a 180CM Octo box placed in my conservatory while my model was in the living room, the intention being to create a feeling of natural sunlight through a window. I shut the curtains over the conservatory doors and then had her open a gap and peek through while taking the shot.

Week 14 - Chiaroscuro

Found while in my garden today.

I spotted this one in the front yard of a monastery in Luxembourg. It was could help but peeking left and right of that tree. Enough time for me to mount that 2x extender. :-)

Young highland cow on the Isle of Arran Scotland.

Well, I had to await Lewis's arrival from nursery school before catching this shot. I did ask him to watch me but he was more interested in watching Milo rolling about on the grass. Anyway, he did shout peek-a-boo! In the garden on "another" sunny late afternoon!

Last post before i head to Scotland. I think this is the first shot I've done of a red squirrel with a 100mm lens! You can tell it's a young one with little wisp on the ears. Got all the gear packed and a route. Not sure if I'll go all the way, depends on how involved, or not that I get. Well also the midges might come into it...

This is one of the North Yorkshire reds I'll be taking my bag of nuts in case I see any in Scotland. What do I need for a Golden Eagle?

The Dalia's at the garden this year are spectacular!

Great Horned Owls

Where did mom go? In what seemingly appears to be a game of peek-a-boo, a female monk seal shovels her face into the beach sand as the pup looks around. After taking her 15-day old pup for a swimming lesson, the adult galumphed ashore and nosed into the sand. This is a frequently observed behavior attributed to a variety of reasons ranging from sun screening to molting itch to sensory attenuation. Whatever the motive, it was anthropomorphically amusing to watch. Monk seals are, unfortunately, among the rarest of marine mammals. A recent census indicated a slight increase in the total population to an estimated 1,600 individuals. The encouraging population increase may be due to diligent conservation efforts.

Thank you for helping this shot make Explore!

In the early morning, just as the sun was peeking over the horizon.

A Lesser Kudu plays peek-a-boo.

I guess that title is appropriate since Halloween is in a few days.

This was a fun catch after aligning it with TPE. I went to the location, but did't realize the park "closes" at sunset.. well the moon didn't rise till about 30 minutes after sunset. I idled the car by the entrance of the park, hoping to flag down the Park Ranger and tell him my plans, but nope. Nothing. No one came by.

Last thing I wanted was a park violation.

As about 6:38pm came about, I saw a peek of the moon over the hills.

My heart pounded.

Adrenaline kicked in.

I forgot everything I was worried about and just went with it.

Drove the car half a mile down the road, unloaded my gear, and shot.

The gate was still opened when I left the park.

Not a soul in sight..

Peek a Boo!

A day in the studio with Di, Dave, Mike and Jen, it was great fun :)

Chewie peeking out from under his auxiliary Golden on our morning walkie this morning.

He and his pal were rescued just before being surrendered to our local high kill shelter on our worst/busiest week of the year here in Las Vegas. As many as 200 dogs a day are surrendered to the over capacity shelter.

We've only had him overnight, but so far Chewie appears to be fearless, affectionate, cat & dog friendly, quite the chow hound, comes when he's called, seems to know "sit" and makes the coolest little Chewbaca sounds...Also he comes with a 2 year old Golden Retriever...

A truck like something out of Dads Army pulled up, I grabbed this shot quickly before they opened up the back and out piled a load of well dressed pheasant beaters, their gun dogs, and the most incredible smell.

Glad I wasn't in the back with them!
