A young mule deer peeks out from behind a tree to see what I am.

The Sculpture walk outside of Hanmer Springs in amongst the Hanmer Forest is well worth the 30 mins (or more if taking photos). On a bright and cool morning. The sculptures are of wood and pop-up without warning on the trees or beside the path. All sculptures are made out of a redwood tree that had to be removed from Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa. European larch, Corsican pine, European alder and Norway spruce and Ponderosa Pine were planted in the early 1900s. Understoreys of oak, sycamore and rowan provide a colourful display in autumn.

The sculptor is Andrew Lyons, from Christchurch

I know...I know...no feathers or beaks. But this raccoon at Fort De Soto was just too cute. It was leisurly making its way up a tree when it peeked its head around and gave me this look.

Long tailed tits are on the RSPB Green status list.

The sun came out briefly right at the end of the day so I went out to take a photo or two to make the most of it.

These wee ones have no clue that their world is about to turn upside down. While we don't have anything definitive yet, we have many iniquiries. We are optimistic this crew will find homes as pairs. Exciting!
