Philadelphia Water joined other City partners and Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Connor Barwin in breaking ground on a Smith Recreation Center makeover that includes extensive green stormwater infrastructure (GSI). Green City, Clean Waters investments are being paired with green stormwater tools paid for by the non-profit Urban Roots and Barwin’s Make the World Better foundation. Together, natural stormwater systems, including two rain gardens, will manage up to 160,000 gallons of water during storms, keeping the equivalent of 3,000 rain barrels of polluted water out of the Schuylkill River.

The project is a partnership between the Office of Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, Connor Barwin’s Make the World Better foundation, Urban Roots, Philadelphia Water and the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation.

Occurring in three phases, the $2.5 million project will transform the aging recreation center and 7.5-acre site into a state-of-the art facility. In addition to the green stormwater tools detailed above, the site will include a newly renovated recreation center, basketball courts, playground, fitness trail, and a multi-purpose field surfaced with all new turf.

Smith is located at 24th and Jackson streets in South. Philadelphia. See our blog for more on the Green City, Clean Waters components: bit.ly/PWMtwb15

After arriving in Rosario, we went straight to work with GSMP 2013 emerging leader Luz Amuchastegui and the staff at El Desafio Foundation. The day was full of activities, including games facilitated by Drs. Hillyer and Huffman at the local park, conversations with volunteers participants, and Saatchi & Saatchi mentors at the foundation's location, and a debrief with Luz and executive director Mario Raimondi in the evening.

Lisbon street. the lady ( the human one) says 5 years ago a Spanish gentleman photographed the dog and gave her a print. I so wished I had a decent printer and could do the same, she treasures very much that other photo. but here goes this one, a couple of Lisbon ladies doing their morning grocery shopping.

(and I thought of Elliot Erwitt, who loved photographing dogs and their humans at least as much as me and did it so much much better than I ever will!)

As part of Luz' GSMP Action Plan, yesterday she and all of her El Desafio leaders built and dedicated the 6th mini library at a park in Rosario Argentina. Luz', along side her GSMP mentors, is seeing her dreams realized in a very cool way.
