I've been in one of my moods thinking about the people that were important to me that were no longer in my life which is what actually prompted me to start going through my old negatives to see what I could salvage.

I guess you could say that my mom was the biggest fag hag I knew until I met my friend Jennifer. There was a time in her life that gay men seem to gravitate towards her. I don't know if it was her spirit or what but that was true for a short period of her life. Despite her religious views and upbringing she was able to overcome some obstacles to forge some pretty strong friendships that I don't think she had been able to before this point.

Anyway, after High School I was even more of a loner more than normal as all my friends who were able to do so went off to college or moved away from Houston. I'm not sure what they saw in a brainy, quiet, goth boy but they all took me under their wing so to speak. Maybe they things in me that I hadn't up to that point but they took an interest and tried to help guide me to be a better me. There have been many times where I wish there were here to give me advice of to guide me through some of the difficult stuff that I've had to deal with.

Butch, on the left, I still see ever now and then. Charles on the right was one of the last to pass away in my extended family. Or at least until John Pierce passed.

This was taken during Thanksgiving Dinner at John Spencer Pierce's house. (You had to call him by all three names or it was going to be trouble). We had all been cutting up real bad the whole night. Butch was telling me that I was starting stuff by taking this picture and that i was going to get him in trouble. I was laughing the whole time I was taking this.

For the final bit of the program the ladies received certificates directly from the US State Dept. to show their completion of the program.

This past Tuesday, July 30 over 50 people shared a Ramadan iftar at CAIR-LA's Anaheim office.

The night included an international menu that was seemingly endless – spaghetti and meat sauce, samosas, Libyan soup, hummus, batengan (eggplant dish), , noodle and rice dishes, pastas, and a wide array of delectable desserts were all served. It was all delicious, and it all went fast.

What was reflected on Wednesday, however, was the diversity in not just the dishes that were served but, in particular, in the guests that attended the event. Attendees represented individuals from various backgrounds and walks of life; many originating from the Middle East, East and South Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and South America. Individuals from many faiths were represented including Catholics, Lutherans, Jews, Buddhists, Methodists, among others. There were also community leaders and many young people who attended.

Capstone, along with its partner Quadrangle Development, is currently developing a mixed use project on a site located at 9th Street NW and L Street NW. The $230 million project includes a 310-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel, a 190-room Residence Inn by Marriott hotel, and 230 residential units. The project is located in the Shaw Historic district and includes the redevelopment of a number of historic buildings located along 9th Street NW. Capstone recently completed the PUD process and is currently overseeing the design and financing of the project, which is projected to break ground in 2015.

Let’s say, in a few years, you’re searching for a hotel room adjacent to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, and the swanky Marriott Marquis is full.

No problem. Maybe there’s a vacancy at the Courtyard Marriott next door. Or, perhaps, the Residence Inn by Marriott, next door.

Quadrangle Development Corp., as QC 369 LLC, has submitted a planned-unit development application to construct a 570,000-square-foot, 12-story building at Ninth and L streets NW, adjacent to the new Marriott Marquis. The $230 million project, called Columbia Place, will contain a hotel (really, two hotels, both Marriotts) and multifamily residential.

The site owner is (wait for it) Marriott International Inc. The project architects are Cooper Carry and TVS Design. The developer, Quadrangle, also worked with Marriott on the 1,175-room Marquis, which opened last month.

“Overall, the proposed development will significantly improve the existing area by virtue of the exceptional architectural design of the building, which carefully considers the nearby uses and aesthetics,” per the PUD application. “The proposed PUD will provide new housing and hotel opportunities to District residents, will put additional ‘eyes and ears’ on the street, and will create an improved pedestrian experience along 9th and L Streets, N.W.”

One part of the $230 million structure will contain a 124-room, extended stay Residence Inn by Marriott and a 377-room Courtyard Marriott, though the two will have separate entrances, both fronting L Street. The Residence Inn will include a restaurant and bar, 11 meeting rooms, a fitness center, internal courtyard with fire pit and “optional yoga deck,” and a retail space accessed from Ninth Street NW.

The 200-unit residential building, comprising studios, one- and two-bedroom units, will be located on the western side of the site, rising to a height of 110 feet. The Lurgan Building at 919 L will be retained and converted into 15 units. The new structure will have a rooftop recreation space and pool deck with a grill area, fire pit, lounge seating and “chess board turf.”

Quadrangle plans to demolish two historically contributing buildings, 911 and 913 L St. NW, while incorporating portions of nine other historic but dilapidated buildings into the development.

The project will be built in two phases, the hotel first followed by the residential.

The local advisory neighborhood commission unanimously backed the conceptual design and massing plan as it went through the Historic Preservation Review Board process earlier this year.

It was 32 degrees when I took this photo after Wishes. I live in PA, and while I mock that weather usually, I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt, so it was miserable.

Utah State University partnered with the Utah MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, science, Achievement) program to hold the state MESA Prosthetic Arm Challenge contest finals during USU Physics Day at Lagoon on May 16.

“USU Physics Day is an educational activity that gives high school and middle school students the chance to explore the reality of physics in a fun way. It provides students with the opportunity to take concepts outside the classroom and into their memories forever,” said Physics Day organizers.

This year eleven teams participated, seven in the junior high category and four in the high school category.

During the competition, the teams are asked to complete four tasks using the prosthetic arm they have researched, designed, built and tested. Teams do distance accuracy relay, object relocation, dexterity, and design efficiency. Prior to the competition teams must complete a technical report and academic display that are used during their oral presentations for the judges.

The winners of the state finals, Granite Park Team #6 and Cottonwood High School Team #4, will travel to Portland, Oregon in June to compete at nationals.

The Utah State Office of Education provides leadership for the MESA program. MESA is a public education program holding membership in a consortium. Consortium members represent public education, industry, higher education, and the community.

My partner for this project is Alina Ahmed. The first picture is of her in the soccer goal at school. She is the team’s goalie. Soccer plays a big role in her life and she loves playing. I took this picture as she was putting her gloves on. I like this picture because of the slight smile she has on. I cropped this picture so it would follow the rule of thirds and enhanced it by playing with brightness and contrast. The photo was taken at 8 at 1/250.

My next picture is of Alina on a slide at a park near the Warner Center. I took this picture because Alina likes to play around and have fun like a kid. In this picture she is about to slide down into the sand. I adjusted the brightness and contrast and cropped it to follow the rule of thirds. The photo was taken at 8 at 1/250.

The third picture is of Alina on her phone lounging on an outside patio at the Marriot. Alina is a very social person and is constantly talking to her friends on her phone. This picture was taken at 16 and 1/15. I cropped this picture so it would follow the rule of thirds and enhanced it by playing with brightness and contrast. I liked how her legs on the table create an interesting angle.

My next picture is of Alina relaxing on the beach at the Calabasas Lake. The beach is one of her favorite places to go. I liked this picture because she is staring into the lake while sitting on the sand. This picture is very peaceful; it is just her and nature. The photo was taken at 8 at 1/250.

The fifth picture is of Alina drawing on the chalkboard at Menchie’s. not only does Alina like to cool off after a soccer practice with some frozen yogurt, but also she likes to mess around and act like a kid, by doing things she did when she was younger. The photo was taken at 8 at 1/250.
