This past Tuesday, July 30 over 50 people shared a Ramadan iftar at CAIR-LA's Anaheim office.
The night included an international menu that was seemingly endless – spaghetti and meat sauce, samosas, Libyan soup, hummus, batengan (eggplant dish), , noodle and rice dishes, pastas, and a wide array of delectable desserts were all served. It was all delicious, and it all went fast.
What was reflected on Wednesday, however, was the diversity in not just the dishes that were served but, in particular, in the guests that attended the event. Attendees represented individuals from various backgrounds and walks of life; many originating from the Middle East, East and South Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and South America. Individuals from many faiths were represented including Catholics, Lutherans, Jews, Buddhists, Methodists, among others. There were also community leaders and many young people who attended.
It was 32 degrees when I took this photo after Wishes. I live in PA, and while I mock that weather usually, I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt, so it was miserable.

My partner for this project is Alina Ahmed. The first picture is of her in the soccer goal at school. She is the team’s goalie. Soccer plays a big role in her life and she loves playing. I took this picture as she was putting her gloves on. I like this picture because of the slight smile she has on. I cropped this picture so it would follow the rule of thirds and enhanced it by playing with brightness and contrast. The photo was taken at 8 at 1/250.
My next picture is of Alina on a slide at a park near the Warner Center. I took this picture because Alina likes to play around and have fun like a kid. In this picture she is about to slide down into the sand. I adjusted the brightness and contrast and cropped it to follow the rule of thirds. The photo was taken at 8 at 1/250.
The third picture is of Alina on her phone lounging on an outside patio at the Marriot. Alina is a very social person and is constantly talking to her friends on her phone. This picture was taken at 16 and 1/15. I cropped this picture so it would follow the rule of thirds and enhanced it by playing with brightness and contrast. I liked how her legs on the table create an interesting angle.
My next picture is of Alina relaxing on the beach at the Calabasas Lake. The beach is one of her favorite places to go. I liked this picture because she is staring into the lake while sitting on the sand. This picture is very peaceful; it is just her and nature. The photo was taken at 8 at 1/250.
The fifth picture is of Alina drawing on the chalkboard at Menchie’s. not only does Alina like to cool off after a soccer practice with some frozen yogurt, but also she likes to mess around and act like a kid, by doing things she did when she was younger. The photo was taken at 8 at 1/250.
For what should be a required experience for everyone, the girls enjoyed a Wheelchair Basketball Clinic at the All People's Life Center. They got to see what it is like playing sports in a wheelchair, and played along side other people with disabilities.

Since I'm contracting, I hop from office to office, depending on who's out at the time. So unfortunately, I can't claim this as MY office :)
Full HDR shot of this. I like it cropped better I think.

Another classic icon that just has to be photographed. Despite the vibrant colors of the original, this one just "feels" so much better to me in b&w.

Rosemary was in town to do some shopping and catch up with friends. She comes from Melbourne, been here ‘too long’ - about 18 years. She has 3 kids, 1 in Melbourne, 2 in Adelaide. Rosemary would love to go on a holiday to England to visit the place her partner comes from. Rosemary was once a machinist in Melbourne, making BIC cigarette lighters. She met her partner whilst travelling in Canberra. Rosemary is often seen around town collecting cans for recycling.
