In 1988, Randall Dee (R. D.) Hubbard and a partner, Ed Allred, bought Ruidoso Downs by putting up $2.6 million in cash and assuming $9 million in debts. Hubbard founded AFG Industries based in Ft. Worth. The track had fallen on tough times and since then, they have spent nearly $3 million on improvements. They have built the Grade 1 All American Futurity Race from a $2,000,000 purse in 1989 to $3,000,000 2016. For quarter-horses the All-American Futurity, is the world's richest for that breed. Hubbard was a primary force to pass legislation allowing casinos at racetracks in New Mexico. This permitted the addition of the Billy the Kid Casino.
Ruidoso Downs Race Track and the Billy the Kid Casino are being sold in 2017 by R.D. Hubbard to a five-member equal partnership of quarter horse racing enthusiasts. According to the Ruidoso News the buyers are Stan Sigman, a pioneer in wireless service; John Andreini, an insurance mogul; Gary McKinney, head of Reliance Energy and ranch owner; Johnny Trotter, former American Quarter Horse Association president and a feed lot owner in Hereford, Texas; and Narciso “Chico” Flores, a well-known quarter horse breeder. The buyers have been racing horses at Ruidoso Downs for years and several own homes in the area. The casino is part of the deal, but not the Hubbard radio stations or the Crystal Springs horse breeding farm in Tularosa.
Ruidoso Downs Race Track is home to The All American Futurity, known as The World's Richest Quarter Horse Race. It is the Quarter Horse race that every owner, breeder, trainer and jockey wants to win. Run over 440 yards every Labor Day, the All American Futurity gained its status through unique financial cooperation between the track and horsemen. In 1978, the All American Futurity became the world’s first million-dollar horse race. In 2006, No Secrets Here set a stakes record when he raced the 440 yards in :20.88. In 2015, the All American Futurity purse reached $3 million and became the largest purse for any two-year-old race in the world.

This past Tuesday, July 30 over 50 people shared a Ramadan iftar at CAIR-LA's Anaheim office.
The night included an international menu that was seemingly endless – spaghetti and meat sauce, samosas, Libyan soup, hummus, batengan (eggplant dish), , noodle and rice dishes, pastas, and a wide array of delectable desserts were all served. It was all delicious, and it all went fast.
What was reflected on Wednesday, however, was the diversity in not just the dishes that were served but, in particular, in the guests that attended the event. Attendees represented individuals from various backgrounds and walks of life; many originating from the Middle East, East and South Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and South America. Individuals from many faiths were represented including Catholics, Lutherans, Jews, Buddhists, Methodists, among others. There were also community leaders and many young people who attended.
Today the ladies were treated to an excellent Poomsae Seminar to learn the fine details of WTF Tai Kwon Do.

For their second day on the program, the ladies visited the Womens Basketball Hall of Fame. At the facility they played some wake up games and then toured the museum. After this, they enjoyed a luncheon and panel where they shared a little about themselves and heard a wonderful message from olympic swimmer Kate Ziegler. After the wonderful meal, the girls gathered for a time of curriculum to begin thinking about the state of women and sports in their communities.

OWNERSHIP SEALED: Nicola Neilson, partner at Latimer Hinks Solicitors, with Ian and Eileen Cox, caravan and camping site owners
Latimer Hinks Solicitors has helped a couple to become sole owners of a popular caravan and camping site, securing the future of the business.
Eileen and Ian Cox run Abbot’s House Farm, which boasts 90 pitches for caravans and tents along with self-catering holiday accommodation comprising a barn, a cottage and part of the farmhouse.
The legal elements of the commercial deal were a team effort by Latimer Hinks’ staff with Nicola Neilson handling the property aspects, Nick Poole the transfer of the business to sole ownership and Mark Gardner the purchase negotiations.
Nicola Neilson, a Partner at Latimer Hinks, said: "Mr and Mrs Cox’s business is a flourishing one and my colleagues and I are delighted to have been able to help them achieve their goal of becoming the owners of this popular caravan and camping site.
"We wish them well with their plans to further improve the business, which is located in one of the most stunning areas of Britain”
The site, which attracts up to 3,000 holidaying families a year, is situated in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and is right alongside the North York Moors railway.
It is an ideal base for exploring the surrounding countryside and tourist attractions by car, walking, or cycling. The village of Goathland - made famous by the TV programme Heartbeat - is only about 15 minutes’ stroll away.
The existing toilet and shower block will be further enhanced with the addition of a laundry. A new games room is one of the further improvements Mr and Mrs Cox will make, by converting existing unused buildings.
Mr Cox said: "Thanks to there being a wide range of specialists available at Latimers Hinks, we were able to use the firm for all the legal requirements needed to complete the deal. We could not have achieved our dream of owning the business outright without the breadth of expert knowledge available at Latimer Hinks.”
The couple previously owned the business in partnership with another couple.
February was a sad month for the Wild Ennerdale partners as we said goodbye to Jeremy Barlow who is moving with the National Trust from looking after Ennerdale to a new larger area in South Cumbria. Jeremy is a founding member of the Partnership without whom Wild Ennerdale would not exist. We all wish him all the best in his new job. As if in response the valley served up a fantastic day for a partners meeting outside Blacksail YHA.

Over eleven years ago, writer Ron Fortier and artist Rob Davis partnered to create a new publishing venture that devoted itself to producing New Pulp novels and anthologies featuring classic pulp characters from the 30s and 40s. That outlandish idea they named Airship 27 Productions. Since that time, Airship 27 has become an energetic part of the pulp community, not only revitalizing classic pulp figures such as Secret Agent X, Domino Lady and Captain Hazzard, but newer creations as well such the late Mark Justice’s weird western hero, the Dead Sheriff.
The mysterious Master has been seeking the half-breed Indian Sam who rode with the Dead Sheriff as his companion Cheveyo. All of this is a ruse as the fable zombie lawman is nothing more than a puppet corpse manipulated by Sam through the use of a magic amulet; an amulet Sam stole from one of the Master’s agents.
When the Great Castwell’s traveling magic show appears claiming to have the Dead Sheriff as one of its acts, the Master dispatches the demonic twins Damon and Emile Loizeux to investigate. They discover that Castwell is a fraud and his Dead Sheriff merely an actor in disguise. Still, if allowed to continue, the show will ultimately attract Sam and his pal, journalist Richard O’Malley. Thus the bait is put on full display, setting up a confrontation that will be both horrific and cataclysmic.
“After releasing the first Dead Sheriff novel several years ago to honor a promise I made my friend Mark Justice, I then went on to finish the second he had begun before his passing,” reports Airship 27 Productions’ Managing Editor, Ron Fortier. “With it completed, we made the decision to keep the series alive (pun intended) if we could find other of our stable writers willing to do Dead Sheriff tales. Right out of the gate we got one of the best.”
Veteran pulp writer Fred Adams Jr. creates a fast paced weird western thriller featuring the characters created by the late Mark Justice, adding to the saga of the west’s most bizarre hero, the Dead Sheriff. Airship 27 Art Director Rob Davis provides the nine black and white interior illustrations and Chris Rawding the truly beautiful cover. A special limited collector’s edition of the book debuted at the recently held Pikeville Comic & Toy Collection in Kentucky. The first copy was presented to Mrs. Norma Kay Justice, Mark’s widow. And now it has the distinction of officially being the company’s grand 200th release!
