Zabriskie Point is one of the most iconic viewpoints in Death Valley National Park. Located right along highway 190 which bisects the park east-west in the middle, the viewpoint offers this panoramic view over some of the most intriguing badlands in the park. Geologically, this area is ancient lakebed sediments that have been exposed by uplifting and erosion. On this morning we were blessed with a partial rainbow and scattered clouds.

It is about 5mm wide.

I am quite partial to blue flowers, and the Himalayan blue poppy is one of my favourites. This is probably why I post so many photos of this striking flower. I came across this flower during one of my many visits to Van Dusen Gardens. The photo was taken in June 2014, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.

Seen along the beginning of the Mill Race Path.

Zoomed in to the bottom part of this waterfall. Have not found the name of this one.

Philly International Airport Incoming Flight Landing During Partial Eclipse

It only lasted 15 minutes, and never stopped snowing.

Best seen large, if you have time.

The 2 stars to the right of the moon are 13 Tau (closest to the moon) and 14 Tau. They are part of stars in the constellation Taurus. The photo was cropped from the original capture at 600mm.

Shot through the lens of a 40mm eyepiece and my 6" SCT scope (about 38X magnification).

Heading towards a 90% coverage of the sun, the moon steadily eats into the heart of the solar system - as seen from Scunthorpe in the UK. 20th March 2015

A solar eclipse at sunrise. A great way to end your night (or begin your day.)

Using maximum optical zoom of 83x (2000mm focal length) and ND 64 & 1000 filters (16-stops), this capture shows the partial phase with a nice sunspot. At maximum phase, this sunspot was covered by the moon. From Cheyenne, WY maximum eclipse was about 81%. Skies and overall light were obviously darker and the air was definitely much cooler during maximum eclipse. The air temperature dropped only 2 degrees (40F to 38F) at maximum eclipse but would have been at least 5 degrees warmer otherwise. The direct sunlight temperature was at least 20F cooler due in part to the 6000 foot elevation of Cheyenne.

Partial Lunar Eclipse yesterday… Had to go out …

You can see the lasershow of the Fête des Vignerons, the eclipse itself, Saturn and Jupiter (bright spot to the right) …

While waiting for the full lunar eclipse (super blood wolf moon), I got a few images during the partial eclipse. It was interesting watching the light drop; I went from 1/1000s to around 1 second during the full eclipse, plus I had to bump up the ISO as it went along.

...it's a cloudy day here, but we could see a bit of the eclipse --79% would be the maximum here...

Pacific City, OR - 2017

Something a bit different from me. Color during the daytime, who knew. Last September I visited Pacific City along the Oregon coast. This is a favorite stop of mine, as it has a Santa Cruz So Cal kinda feel to it in a place that his anything but that. While sitting on the beach watching the fog play around I was struck by the abundance of layers in front of me so I grabbed the gear and made a go of it. This turned out to be a great large print one that will be enjoyed by my better half and I for a time to come. Enjoy the Summer holiday.

Giraffatitan, meaning "giant giraffe", is a genus of sauropod dinosaur that lived during the late Jurassic Period (Kimmeridgian–Tithonian stages). It was originally named as an African species of Brachiosaurus (B. brancai) but this has since been changed. Giraffatitan was for many decades known as the largest dinosaur but recent discoveries of several larger dinosaurs prove otherwise: giant titanosaurians (Argentinosaurus, Puertasaurus and Futalognkosaurus) appear to have surpassed Giraffatitan in terms of sheer mass also the sauropod dinosaur Sauroposeidon is estimated to be taller and possibly heavier than Giraffatitan.

All size estimates for Giraffatitan are based on the specimen HMN SII a subadult individual between 21.8–22.5 metres (72–74 ft) in length and about 12 meters (39 ft) tall. Mass estimates are varied from as little as 15 tonnes (17 short tons) to as much as 78.3 tonnes (86.3 short tons) but there is evidence supporting that these animals could grow larger HMN XV2, represented by a fibula 13% larger than the corresponding material on HMN SII which might have attained 26 metres (85 ft) in length or longer.

Giraffatitan brancai was first named and described by German paleontologist Werner Janensch in 1914 as Brachiosaurus brancai, based on several specimens recovered between 1909 and 1912 from the Tendaguru formation near Lindi, in what was then German East Africa, today Tanzania. It is known from five partial skeletons, including three skulls and numerous fragmentary remains including skull material, some limb bones, vertebrae and teeth. It lived from 145 to 150 million years ago, during the Kimmeridgian to Tithonian ages of the Late Jurassic period.

A famous specimen of Giraffatitan brancai mounted in Museum für Naturkunde (Berlin) is one of the largest, and in fact the tallest, mounted skeletons in the world, as certified by the Guinness Book of Records. Beginning in 1909, Werner Janensch found many additional G. brancai specimens in Tanzania, Africa, including some nearly complete skeletons, and used them to create the composite mounted skeleton seen today.

Today we had a partial lunar eclipse here at South Pole. It's not as spectacular as a full eclipse, but it's still exciting to see it from here at South Pole.

I had been waiting for the eclipse all week and on this once in a lifetime chance I slept in. Luckily I got up with only 5 minutes to spare

A quick trip down Gunn Point road with just enough time to catch the last of the eclipse.

We generally don't get a lot of snow in the Isle Of Man on account of the maritime climate, but it dopes sometimes persist at higher levels. Here is a view down the Sulby Glen road from 'Bungalow' (the road was closed to traffic when this was taken).
