‘J’- from Manila to the Bay. May 2007

‘Transgender’ is a general term applied to individuals, behaviors and groups involving tendencies that diverge from normative gender role (male and female) commonly, but not always assigned at birth, as well as the role traditionally held by society.

Transsexual, transgender, cross dresser, transvestite, tranny, t-girl, gay, fag, homo, drag queen, queer, genderqueer, and androgynous are some terms we may hear for individuals who don’t quite fit neatly into the gender category of man or woman. The media and societal understanding is usually limited to portraying male to female (mtf) transgender women as being abnormal, drag performers, entertainers and sex workers. In the last couple of years, there has been a rise in hate crimes and murders against transgender individuals in the Bay Area, including a recent murder of a transgender Latina in the Mission district of San Francisco where I reside. The Bay Area has also been the site of federal immigration raids that have targeted undocumented immigrants. The recent debates on immigration, the lack of understanding about transgender issues and murders of transgender women motivated me to do a documentary project that explores themes of gender and sexuality intersecting with being a transgender immigrant in the United States of America.

I originally envisioned the project to be about someone who was immersed in the transgender community in the city of San Francisco, but instead I encountered a 28 year old transgender woman who recently arrived from Manila, Philippines to a suburbs of the Bay Area. Nested in her aunt’s middle class home in the hills, ‘J’ countered the isolation of the suburbs by using the Internet to connect to people. While she has the financial and emotional support of her relatives here, she tries her best to live independently. She works a part time job from her relatives’ connections but is scared to look for jobs in what she calls a conservative Filipino community known to have reported undocumented immigrants for rewards from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She aspires to be a singer-performer-model and is learning make-up tips from her cousin. These photos attempt to show a little glimpse in the life of ‘J’ as an immigrant transgender woman negotiating gender, femininity and life in the U.S.

It amuses me to think that as a child I was instructed not to talk to strangers. As an adult I have broken with that advice and met many of them while in the course of daily life, and from that, many interesting people. At least now I'm bringing my camera with me.

As it happened on this recent Springtime evening in Albuquerque it wasn't too hot, and the air was dry because monsoons haven't thundered in yet, though we have been experiencing hail storms. I found my next subject in the park. She was wearing a fake fur shrug: a sort of vintage-style bolero jacket. It's a somewhat unusual accessory, and it gave way to my conversation with her. I explained the 100 Strangers project. She thought it would be great fun to be photographed.

This is Divina, 33/100, who told me she is Filipina. She was born and lived in the Philippines, then Japan, then Guam and finally to the mainland United States. She married a military guy and has lived in Albuquerque for 8 years.

"Being a military wife meant that we had to move around a lot." Divina said. "It's a lot of work to move [a household] with children. It's tiring.

"My husband retired from the Air Force and now works for a cable broadband provider. Albuquerque is a good place for me, since I don't like humidity. My children like it here so I'm glad we don't have to move this time." She said.

On a technical note: I used a reflector here to give her eyes some catch light sparkle, warm up her complexion and provide some dimension to that black little jacket. Her back was to the sun.

Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page.

Postscript update (May 7, 2016): I have had a second encounter with this subject, and it's the first time that has happened to me in the project. Nearly one year to the date of our photograph and meeting, I was at a local supermarket in the checkout line, I looked at the cashier's name badge, then up to her face and there was Divina.

Without anyone behind me in the line, we had a moment to catch up, a chance to remind her of her portrait, and then share the photos of all the others who have come afterwards. I was stoked to have my smartphone at the ready to jump onto Flickr and share.

Divina said, "That was a fun memory!. I'm so happy to be in that group of faces. I'd never imagine all the different people who would agree to participate, like I did. Thank you for including me." She flashed that same, easy smile.

Now that her youngest child has moved up to middle school, she decided to find a part-time job, which is how she came to this place of our meeting. Davina didn't look a minute older than when we became acquainted, and she had the same positive aura that attracted me to her in the first place. She's no longer a stranger!

They looked so young. I guess they're students, and having a part time job.

I learned over the years that there are many sides to anxiety. I, myself, was diagnosed with anxiety a couple of years ago, but have always dealt with it prior to the official diagnosis. I knew it was time to get help when my anxiety would cause panic and fear that would impact my daily life as a wife and mother to four children. For me that was taking prescribed medicine to help with it, talking with others (family), and making sure I knew what to do when I felt this panic or extreme fear.

Over the past two years all four of my children were diagnosed with some type of anxiety. My oldest son was diagnosed at the beginning of 11th grade school year. He was having problems sleeping, knowing how to interact with his peers, and understanding social cues. I knew it was serious when he came to me and told me that he was having problems sleeping. He was not the kind of kid that would admit to have a problem.

Fortunately I was able to get him to see a therapist and a psychiatrist where he was diagnosed with social anxiety. He started by taking medication for anxiety and seeing his therapist once to twice a week. He now has the tools on what to do and how to handle different situations. My oldest son is no longer on medication nor visiting his therapist, but the door is always open.

My youngest son was diagnosed with anxiety through a pediatric psychologist when a full evaluation was done. I was shocked when I heard this diagnosis. I never thought of him being anxious due to his negative behaviors. From a young age he would throw and break things, kick and hit others, and just become very angry. I never thought of anxiety being shown through extrinsic behaviors.

I always thought that the person would become quiet, seclude him/herself from others, etc., but never through hitting, kicking, yelling, etc. This new knowledge opened up my eyes. He is currently seeing a therapist once a week, and is still struggling. I am hoping that the therapist will teach him different tools to use when he becomes anxious.

My daughters were diagnosed with anxiety last spring. My oldest daughter was diagnosed with social, test, and general anxieties whereas my youngest was diagnosed with general anxiety. Both girls exhibit their anxiety by retreating to their bedroom. My oldest daughter’s therapist said that this is a safe place for her and to let her go there when she feels the need to. She has learned many tools to help her work through her anxiety.

My oldest daughter has also been challenged this past year with starting a new part-time job, having a major surgery, being harassed by a peer at school, and going on a band trip with our local high school. Both of my daughters feel comfortable in telling me how they are feeling. My oldest daughter started with anxiety medicine, but she exhibited negative side effects with it. Since last spring she has been seeing her therapist. Her visits started out as weekly and now she goes every other week. My youngest daughter is very good about verbalizing when she is anxious.

So over the past two years, I have learned that anxiety has many sides to it. It can be handled in a variety of ways. Individuals with anxiety can go see a psychologist, psychiatrist, and/or therapist. Sometimes this is done along with taking prescribed medication. It is important to remember that anxiety can show up through an individual through intrinsic (seclude his/her self from others, become very quiet, etc.) and extrinsic behaviors (yelling, throwing things, hitting objects and/or others, etc.). Everyone is different and therefore the treatment for each individual is different as well. My four children have taught me this well.

"Success will never change me" claimed Rafa Benitez as he resumed his part time job in Wetherspoons. "I may just have got back from Istanbul following a glorious Champions League victory, but nevertheless I must still pull pints for the people."

Great guy.

After I read the "Vomit post" from tibiloo (I can´t find anymore...hum) and this post from Jillybug , these topics did not get out of my head the last days! For the most of you I am unknown and new in the Blythe collector world, but I am a toy collector since years and have seen and heard a lot. I loved toys and mainly dolls when I was a child and so I came across Lundby dollhouses and Käthe Kruse dolls. I collected both for a while and since the last two years I discovered BJDs and also Blythe… So I really understand what´ s going on and why some of you miss the innocent days of Blythe, when it all began. But I think this hobby developed like a lot hobbies when they get popular! People go insane and spent tooo much money on things they want just because they can or others have them and so they have to have them too… Crazy!

I always tried not to get soaked up by all this and not to be bothered by other people behaviours! If I focus on the negative aspects it makes me unhappy! Maybe it sounds a bit buddhistic, but like others here I try to be happy with the things I have and to be just thankful. I have never been rich because I am a single mum since years and just try to make a living with my little income from being a freelance designer and with a part time job… so even if I want to, I can not spent much money on my hobby! And I know even if I could I would not, because getting more and more does not satisfy me at the end!

But what I really want to say is, that the best thing for me in collecting in general and Blythe specifically is: FRIENDSHIP!! You can collect the cutest dolls, dress them up in the loveliest way, take the sweetest pics ever, but when there is no one out there, who shares the happiness with you it is just the half fun! And I don´t need tons of comments under my pics, I´ m happy when there are a few from people who I know and like! So let´ s appreciate friendship and forget the rest!

Thank you all my sweet, creative and lovely collector friends out there!! It´s so good to have you!!

And why this pic?! Because all these great things were send to me from Kewty-pie, who isn´t just one of the generous persons I know, she is also a very good flickr friend to me and one of the loveliest toy collecters, with a great collection I know!!

Here's how it looked in 1985, www.flickr.com/photos/58058190@N00/3432688765/

It was torn down and replaced not long after.

Way back in 1980 I came across this image on the UK 12" single for "The River" with "Born To Run" and "Rosalita" on the B-side. I saw the record at the Sam the Record Man in Kitchener Ontario, being in high school and not immediately having the $10 and change for this import, I hid it in another artist's section and came back the next week after I was paid at my part time job. I still have it and put it in a record sleeve frame where it hangs on my wall beside a big saturated colour picture of the Holiday Motel in Las Vegas.

I have always LOVED this image, totally film noir. I scanned it large so people can get a real good look at it.

My first car was very nearly a wonderful blue 1969 Mercedes with red leather upholstery, but, after a stern warning by an ever-smoking German mechanic family friend about the cost of spare parts, it ended up being this smurf-blue 1967 Beetle, purchased for $600. Two days into proud ownership, I was pulled over by the local constabulary for having a badly bald tyre. They slapped me with a yellow canary sticker: I was off the road already! And it got worse. Down at the Motor Vehicle Registry, they presented me with a list as long as my arm of things to fix to get it back on the road.

After a few despondent weeks, I found another Beetle in the front yard, a 1966, that had all of the parts that I needed to repair my first one, including good tyres, for $400, much cheaper than buying all the bits. Home it went. And it snowballed from there...

I got a part-time job working at the now long-defunct Rent-a-bug in Smith St, where Ken taught me to fix anything with a screwdriver, a pair of pliers and a hammer, where part of the deal was I got the keep the wrecked red-and-white bug. Each one came and went with a story. Several projects funded my travels overseas over the years. The nose of the 1959 just poking out from under the house was previously rolled by my friend Matt, so I cut the top off and made a convertible...it's still on the road in Darwin somewhere. I've still got the bug to this day...in fact, it's another 1966 Beetle sitting in my driveway right now. I don't seem to have any time these days. Any takers?

My parents probably wouldn't agree, but I reckon it really was a blessing in disguise. To own my own first car, but to be too young to have enough cash to be able to pay someone to work on it.

I was forced to learn to be my own mechanic.

Surfers in a Sunday Morning Pt 2

A bit of belated continuation of a series I started a few weeks ago.

Who would have thought. A few months ago I was tossing and turning over wether or not to quit my part time job, to dive full time in to photography, video and web; and now I am so busy I'm struggling to keep up with everything else that goes on.

Central Campus Hiring Fair hosted approximately 30 Des Moines area businesses to interview seniors looking to enter the workforce. Seniors have participated in resume writing and mock interviews in preparation for the Hiring Fair to find full-time and part-time jobs.

The goal is to secure a job in a career path they trained for at Central Campus and to provide seniors with employment opportunities after high school graduation that lead to a life sustainable wage with benefits.

It's cold here in Florida still. It's been such an unusual year. Every twenty years or so we have a nasty winter like this. Of course, everyone else is doing even worse, so we shouldn't complain, but somehow freezing temps in February just don't fit the Florida lifestyle. Personally, I'm miserable if I can't wear my comfortable sandals! Yesterday I had the air on for a while, and tonight it's going to plummet to low 30's, and they say the wind chill will make it feel like it's in the 20's. So, I started going through pics that were taken on a warmer day. I imagine it will be ridiculously hot this summer- that's always the way it goes after a miserable winter- and I suppose it will be nice enough for photos shoots soon. I'm looking forward to it!

I'm still really busy dealing with stuff. Working only three days a week, my finances have caved in on me recently with everything maxing out, and leaving me unable to make my car payment for the last three months. Today I finally got things worked out to get the wheels in motion for refinancing the car loan, so that will be a little relief. The bad part is that they won't work with me at all if I fall behind again. They will just tow the car away. The good news is the payments will be about half what I've been paying, but stretched out for five more years! Groan.... Hopefully things will be better soon. I've been doing a little more sewing than before, which has been a help. Another part time job would help, too! So, for now, I am working hard to catch up, and you won't see me around here too much for a little while. I haven't forgotten you, and I will catch up as soon as I catch up with my own life! Hugs to all....

Obviously for some, writing poetry is a part time job.

A thousand birds, that flew in his face.

There was a certain, turbulence up there.

Fluttering at the back, you haven't noticed?

It makes sense now.

What do you do at your part time job when your supposed to be answering emails, taking phone calls and making notes…DOODLE LIKE A MOTHER F####R….and then you get fired!

Circa 1943 in Egypt. My father told me about this day. He considered himself a good jockey having had a part time job before the war which required him to exercise older racehorses. He persuaded the guide who normally led the horses (or are they asses, mules and donkeys?) round the pyramids to let them him and his mates go round on their own. The guide was not worried at all as no matter how hard Dad and his mates tried to take detours, stop, move on or in any way deviate from the normal tour none of them could persuade the horses to obey. No matter what they did the horses followed their usual route and stopped for the usual time they stopped on their normal tour with the guide.

That is my father 5th right on a white animal slightly to the fore. If any of his mates here are still alive they will be in their 90s at least by now. Does anyone recognise any of them.

From 1974 to 1977 I lived in Cheltenham. My rent took up about 40% of my initial salary. Which didn't leave much for other important things. So I found a part-time job as a petrol pump attendant at a local Blue Star garage.

The manager lived right next door to the garage, and his son Duncan also worked part-time there on the days when I didn't.

When I bought the TR5, he liked it so much he bought one too.

Not sure what the police Triumph motorbike was doing there.

Chinese Lessons: Finding a part-time job 2

Many leading employers of part-time workers accept online applications. In other cases, it's better to apply in person. This online Chinese language courses will give you some information about how to find a part-time job at China when you are a foreigner and learning Chinese at China.

I introduce the topic by a online Chinese conversation as we do last time. The following is the second part of this online Chinese language courses conversation. Let's see what happened.

Context of online Chinese conversation:

Mike is talking with his friend Lili about how to get started on a part-time job search.

lì li: nǐ kě yǐ tōng guò zhōng jiè gōng sī zhǎo jiān zhí, yě kě yǐ tōng guò shú rén jiè shào.丽丽:你可以通过中介公司找兼职,也可能通过熟人介绍。Lili: You may find a part-time job through agencies or friends.

mài kè: wǒ xiǎng tōng guò hòu zhě, zhōng jiè gōng sī shōu fèi hěn gāo ér qiě yǒu xiē bù kě xìn.麦克:我想通过后者,中介公司收费很高而且有些不可信。Mike: I prefer the latter. The agencies ask for high fees and they're not reliable.

lì li: yě xǔ wǒ kě yǐ bāng nǐ dǎ tīng yí xià. wǒ yǒu gè péng yǒu qià qiǎo shì xiǎo xué xiào zhǎng.丽丽:也许我可以帮你打听一下。我有个朋友恰巧是小学校长。Lili: Maybe I can make some enquiries on your behalf. I have a friend who happens to be a school master.

mài kè: nà zhēn shì tài hǎo le. shì chéng zhī hòu wǒ yào hǎo hǎo xiè xiè nǐ.麦克:那真是太好了,事成之后我一定好好谢谢你。Mike: That's great! I would appreciate your help very much.

new words of Chinese learning online:

中介公司 zhōng jiè gōng sī: intermediary 熟人 shú rén: friend 收费 shōu fèi: charge, ask for fees 可信 kě xìn: reliable 打听 dǎ tīng: inquire about something for somebody 小学校长 xiǎo xué xiào zhǎng: school master

It's true that in China it's expensive and unreliable to find a job through angencies. As foreigners, you should pay special attention to be taken in. Some agencies ask a high fee and they don't introduce jobs for you or they just throw you a job without considering whether it's suitable for you.

As you foreigners, you can choose the jobs like translation, teacher and so on. But, in my opinion, teaching is a better choice for you, one reason I have been expplained last time, another is that it can help you to learn Chinese well because you are among a group of Chinese language speakers.

If you want to have online Chinese language courses and find some Chinese learning online materials, you can go to the website www.echineselearning.com/

Apparently Fred had a part time job at Marineland, 1980.

August 24

Well look who's gettin' all married up in here! Angel hitched up with her new hubbin' Darby today. Somehow she managed to go through the entire engagement process without Emily or me ever meeting him! He seems like a cool dude though. Congrats, Angel!

This morning Emily and I had brunch with David and I got all caught up with him. Amanda rode with us to the wedding, which was a pile of fun. Afterwards we hit up North Park Mall, where I forced the girls to join me at the Tesla store before we could do anything else. I'm glad we did! Lauren was there and gave me a huge hug. It turned out that she and Amanda will be best friends, I told her about my road trip plans, and she offered me a part time job at the store! That was unexpected.

Once we got home from all the excitement, I pulled out the Ronin and shot some test footage in the back yard. There's definitely some learning to do, but I did manage to squeeze out about five seconds of solid footage while chasing the dog around. The Ronin. Is. Awesome.

Tonight we had dinner with David at Hopdoddy--his first experience. It was YUM! Their special shake right now is a bacon waffle cone shake, to which I added bourbon. Good decision.

May 6, 2011 - Molson Canadian lager still brewed in Canada, but by the American Molson-Coors Brewery. (A bit of an oxymoron.). This one was a 341 mL industry-standard glass bottle with a screw-off cap.

Being Friday, I worked my full-time job, then went to my part time job. After work we went to a stag & doe for a colleague from the drug store, I had a choice of five mainstream domestics, three of which are licensed American beers. My choice was this original Canadian beer brewed by an American-owned brewery. Sometimes, "a beer is just a beer."
