Boris, Maria, and their children, Misha and Grisha, repatriated to Israel in March 2022. The catalyst for this decision was the full-scale, unjustified invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army (and the denial of this fact).

Before repatriation, Boris worked for 13 years as a development manager in major Russian and international companies. Since 2019, the client was an American division of an Italian conglomerate. The family lived very comfortably in Moscow, with a nanny who took care of the house and children while Boris worked remotely from a rented office. Boris was also involved in political activism and served for two years on the Political Council of the Moscow branch of the Progress Party (Navalny's party). Maria worked as the director of development at the private Jewish children's center "Ester" at Vodny Stadium. Misha was successful in his studies at the Jewish School 1540 (ORT) on Novoslobodskaya, and Grisha attended the "Ester" kindergarten.

After leaving Moscow at the end of February, the family initially ended up in Bishkek. They had two weeks left until Israel's emergency repatriation program opened. During this time, Boris was involved in relocating a team of 40 people and exploring different countries for the family's immigration. The remote work format allowed for the possibility of living in a country with a low average income but also low-quality public institutions. However, achieving a high standard of living, if not immediately, then for future generations, required much greater efforts from the entire family. Ultimately, the decision was made to move to Israel. The primary idea was that, based on their nationality, the entire family is Jewish, and this identity would allow them to feel accepted by society.

Upon arriving in Israel, the family was accommodated in a hotel for repatriates in Jerusalem. It was there that the children made friends with their future companions, whom they still see today. The question of choosing a city to live in arose. They approached it based on American recommendations: they looked for an area with the best schools in the country. They found a small, prosperous town, Kiryat Ono, 7 km from the center of Tel Aviv and 6 km from Ben Gurion Airport.

Over the past year, many things have been organized. Boris found two part-time jobs in an Israeli startup and an Austrian company in addition to his regular job, and he also started volunteering for the Israeli branch of the Project Management Institute (PMI). Maria completed two ulpans at the Aleph level and is currently studying at an ulpan at the Bet level in Petah Tikva. After finishing, she plans to look for office work in the field of marketing (possibly completing subsidized courses offered by the Ministry of Absorption). Misha is excelling at Rimonim School, practices Krav Maga (earning an 8th "ki," a yellow belt), and studies music at a conservatory. He also studies Hebrew at an ulpan affiliated with the school and privately with a tutor, and he learns Jewish traditions online. Grisha graduated from "Gan Sfati" and will start attending Varsha School in the new year. He also studies Hebrew and takes swimming lessons.

Israel has mostly lived up to their expectations. There are a few things that have turned out differently. Firstly, of course, it's the cost of living. Indeed, living at the level of "up to 100,000 rubles per family" is possible here when receiving a local salary. However, to maintain the family's accustomed lifestyle with dinners at favorite cafes, delivery of favorite food, occasional taxi rides, outings to concerts of favorite artists with a nanny for the children, trips with friends around the country for a few days, collecting items, buying good clothing and gadgets, and outings, a significantly higher income level is required, not less than 35,000 shekels, and preferably more. Hence the nervousness, nostalgia, and the reluctance to accept Israel as a place for the comfortable life of the entire family. The main expectation is that the global labor market will recover, and investments will allow the hiring of professional managers once again.

Now the family is open to new contacts, especially in the central part of the country. Boris can be reached on Telegram @polymorph84."

There was a moment in November of 2015 when I was sitting in my A&P class and I thought to myself, “What am I doing here?” That same day, I headed down to student advising and asked for a listening ear. I ended up speaking with Mr. Jamie and I told him that I don’t know what I want to do, but I know that what I’m doing at the moment is something I hate. I expressed that when I started SUNY Orange in 2013, that I was undecided which made my mother decide for me. I was going to be a nursing major, she demanded! Taking A&P made me realize that the medical field was not for me. I did tell Jamie that I do enjoy helping people, however, I don’t want to get into the medicine part. I felt lost and discouraged, especially since I was at SUNY Orange at the time going on 3 years and people usually do only 2 years at a community college. I did realize it was taking me longer at my current college because I wasn’t driven to do something that I liked, but forced into a major that I didn’t enjoy! With that being said, Jamie assured me that there were plenty of occupations that involve helping people. Social work was an option and I realized that was something I would be excited to learn about after we did a little research on what they do, and where they work. I remember it like it was yesterday, feeling super excited and finally feeling like I have something to look forward to. I immediately withdrew from A&P, and from there we started choosing classes like Human Services and Sociology to help me test out the social work field. He then asked me if I was a first generation college student, because I expressed to him that I felt like I had nobody to ask questions about my college work or choices. I told him that I was and from there he introduced me to the TRiO Program. Back when the TRiO office was attached to the student advising office, Sheldon and Melissa had like a tiny corner with no sign. I was confused at first as to why Jamie would take me into this tiny room with two people that I don’t know. As Sheldon and Melissa introduced themselves and spoke about the program with me, I filled out a sheet to see if I was eligible. I was still confused at the moment from what was happening. I did not know why it was happening or what these two nice people wanted from me. By the end of my application, Sheldon let me know right away that I was accepted. Still, at that moment I didn’t know if I should be excited and what I should be excited for. Fast forwarding 2 years later as a SUNY Orange alumna, without the TRiO Program, I probably wouldn’t even be able to call myself a SUNY Orange alumna. From having not only Sheldon as my assigned advisor, but being able to talk to any of the TRiO success advisers who were available at the time if I needed anything, helped extremely. All the questions that I couldn’t ask my parents, they were always there to help me. Not only did the success advisers help me and were welcoming, Caleb the administrative assistant was plenty of help as well. It had everything to do with not only helping with my questions or concerns about school, but also the awesome events that I was able to be apart of. I was able to meet a lot of great people through the TRiO program and even chose my 4 year transfer school with the help of the field trips we take as a group. If we weren’t given these opportunities, then I honestly don’t know where I would be today. In high school, I had a school counselor tell my mother I was a “lost cause”. With the help of the TRiO Program, I proved that lady wrong and I am still working on my future degrees. Endless special thanks to the TRiO Program director, Eric Hardwick, who gave me the opportunity to work as a student mentor and helped me just as much as Melissa, Alyson, and Caleb. I was able to use my experience as a student mentor as something to prepare me for my future endeavors. This special opportunity is something that I can put on my resume, use Mr. Hardwick as a great reference, and say it was a part-time job that taught me a lot. I plan on studying Sociology with a concentration in Human Services degree at SUNY New Paltz for the next 2 years with a minor in Women’s Gender and Sexuality studies. I also plan to study abroad during my time there as well. I am pushing myself and trying new things which is what the TRiO Program taught me to do. Optimistically, I will continue on after New Paltz to get my Masters in Social Work. The TRiO Program and the people apart of it made me realize that the sky is the limit. Just being with them for about a year and a half doesn’t feel like enough and makes me slightly upset, because I heard of them at a later time in my college career. I wish I knew them sooner, but better late than never is how I feel. I am so happy that they are getting to branch out and do more things for students because I feel that people should really consider joining if eligible. It is like joining a club, you get to meet new people and get extra help if you need it or even just go for the free food at the events. In all seriousness, I was starting to believe what my high school counselor told my mother when I was feeling undecided back in 2015. Now, I have a plan and confidence all because of the TRiO Program. I have goals and I am accomplishing them and it doesn’t matter how long I take, just as long as I get it done and don’t give up on myself. The best thing and my favorite thing about the TRiO Program is that even though I have graduated and attend a different college at this time, I still keep in contact with Mr. Hardwick who is always letting me know that he and the advisors are here for me, always!

‘J’- from Manila to the Bay. May 2007

‘Transgender’ is a general term applied to individuals, behaviors and groups involving tendencies that diverge from normative gender role (male and female) commonly, but not always assigned at birth, as well as the role traditionally held by society.

Transsexual, transgender, cross dresser, transvestite, tranny, t-girl, gay, fag, homo, drag queen, queer, genderqueer, and androgynous are some terms we may hear for individuals who don’t quite fit neatly into the gender category of man or woman. The media and societal understanding is usually limited to portraying male to female (mtf) transgender women as being abnormal, drag performers, entertainers and sex workers. In the last couple of years, there has been a rise in hate crimes and murders against transgender individuals in the Bay Area, including a recent murder of a transgender Latina in the Mission district of San Francisco where I reside. The Bay Area has also been the site of federal immigration raids that have targeted undocumented immigrants. The recent debates on immigration, the lack of understanding about transgender issues and murders of transgender women motivated me to do a documentary project that explores themes of gender and sexuality intersecting with being a transgender immigrant in the United States of America.

I originally envisioned the project to be about someone who was immersed in the transgender community in the city of San Francisco, but instead I encountered a 28 year old transgender woman who recently arrived from Manila, Philippines to a suburbs of the Bay Area. Nested in her aunt’s middle class home in the hills, ‘J’ countered the isolation of the suburbs by using the Internet to connect to people. While she has the financial and emotional support of her relatives here, she tries her best to live independently. She works a part time job from her relatives’ connections but is scared to look for jobs in what she calls a conservative Filipino community known to have reported undocumented immigrants for rewards from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She aspires to be a singer-performer-model and is learning make-up tips from her cousin. These photos attempt to show a little glimpse in the life of ‘J’ as an immigrant transgender woman negotiating gender, femininity and life in the U.S.

& Independence

For the letter I and March Alphabet Madness.

I work as a part time figure model for a few local art centers. I like the work, a lot. It's liberating, and relaxing, and I get to meet and watch amazing artists every time I model. I'm trying to get as much work as I can to save money. It's hard: going to school, working two part time jobs and keeping up with school work (plus things like running, climbing and friends.) Some days I don't realize how tired I am until I go to take a picture.

Today I had five minutes to run to the station and grab this before heading out to another commitment. The folks waiting for the next train were asking about the portrait, why I was taking it, what the tripod was for, etc. It was fun talking to those few interested enough to ask a stranger like me questions. Someone offered me a flask, I declined.

I'm feeling really beat down and tired from working. Some days I have to remind myself that independence is more than just a financial state, it's being confident in what I do (as an artist, a climber, even a photographer.) Some days I realize how much that work really takes from me and I feel alone, even though I know I'm not.

It was still a good, satisfying day.

Last week at the Liza & Latif wedding.

I think need to have start take pictures of the wedding as a part-time job.

ps- I just make a full video but on flickr can't play till end of the song... so sorry.

Pictured above: Eileen Syrop, Hayward Youth Hall of Fame Award Recipient for the Arts, with her parents.

Nomination statement by George Syrop, Brother

Eileen Syrop has worked tirelessly over the past four years to build community and herself. It's hard to know where to begin. She was elected Class President both freshman and sophomore year, bringing together students and making them proud to hail from Hayward. As a junior and senior, Eileen founded the organization Bay Creatives: a monthly meet-up hosted at different venues throughout the Bay Area where young artists would come out in droves.

The Bay Creatives anniversary event took place in Oakland, featured eight hours of live music, and had a peak attendance of 400 people. As a musician, Eileen has self-released two EP's and multiple singles, garnering over 100K plays on Spotify, Apple Music, and Soundcloud. She's hosted and performed at shows as far north as Vallejo and as far south as Los Angeles.

As an artist, Eileen has studied in San Francisco for two summers and self-released Nasi Magazine, a publication that showcases/celebrates women, people of color, and queer artists. From running track to earning a black belt in karate and medaling nationally, Eileen has also been an active athlete. Somehow, my sister has managed to accomplish all of above while balancing a part-time job and a full course loads of AP classes. Eileen is headed to UC Berkeley in the fall, where she'll be studying cognitive science and sociology.

She has no idea I'm submitting her story. I'm just an incredibly proud brother who believes her endeavors strengthen what it means to come from Hayward. In addition to her accomplishments, Eileen is an incredibly empathetic and kind human being, and I genuinely believe Hayward, the Bay Area, and the world would be at a loss without her.

The City of Hayward honored recipients of its first Youth Achievement Hall of Fame awards, recognizing accomplishment in academics, the arts, athletics, community service, innovation and leadership, and for heroism.

Established earlier this year by the City Council, the Hayward Youth Achievement Hall of Fame is open to young people ages 5 to 19 years old, who can be nominated by any parent or other family member, teacher, coach, mentor, youth leader, neighbor, friend or other sponsoring adult. Nominees must live in or attend school in Hayward. Nomination profiles of the 2017 Youth Hall of Fame inductees can be found here.

The deadline for nominations each new calendar year is July 31. Nominations are accepted in seven categories—academics, arts, athletics, community service, heroism, innovation and leadership. Award selections are made by a three-member ad hoc Youth Hall of Fame committee of the City Council.

For more information and to find complete rules, guidelines and award-category descriptions visit the City Council Youth Achievement Hall of Fame website or call (510) 881-7956.

Housewife Lisa explains how telemetics pay-as-you-drive car insurance works and saves her money while being able to keep an eye on her husband…

“I have three kids, two school runs, a part-time job - and no time.

“The most I ever drive is to school or to the shops and sometimes to work which adds up to about 10 miles a day.

“Now I threw a hissy fit when I found that I get charged the same for my insurance as my friend Sarah across the road who drives about 500 miles a week for work and stuff like that.

“But then I found out from my neighbour that there’s something called pay-how-you-drive. You’re insured all the time, but you’re only charged when you drive your car, and if you drive carefully then you get charged less.

“It’s all down to something called telematics, which is a little box hidden in the car which tells the insurance company when and how you’re driving. It’s the same idea as sending information from a mobile phone, but what it does is monitor if you go round corners too fast, or brake too hard, drive like a hooligan – you know what I mean. Doesn’t apply to me of course.

“I don’t have the foggiest idea how it all works, but the really good thing is that I can go online and log in to a website and see how my teenage son is driving if he takes my car. And as I have the reins on the household budget I can also see how much we’re wasting on pointless journeys like when my husband got his new car and was behaving more like a teenager than my teenagers…”

Coverbox is both a pay-as-you-drive and pay-how-you-drive car insurer, providing insurance through names such as The co-operative, Groupama, Allianz, Sabre and Markerstudy to suit a range of drivers’ requirements. Premiums are based on the distance and time of day of travel – varying rates being charged per mile depending upon peak or off-peak driving – and how drivers drive, with sensible drivers being rewarded with lower insurance costs for careful, considerate and reasonable driving. Drivers who avoid accident black-spots or high-risk locations such as roads past schools or busy rush-hour junctions are rewarded with reduced renewal premiums, and are charged according to their driving habits and approach rather than being charged according to how other drivers living in the same postcode behave behind the wheel: why should two drivers of similar cars, of similar status and similar age – one a well-behaved driver, the other a dangerously-driving neighbour - be charged the same insurance rate when one is many more times likely to be involved in an accident than the other? Coverbox uses telematics – an exchange of information between technology in the car to the insurer – to keep up with, and reward, drivers’ habits; Coverbox customers also benefit from free GPS theft tracking, and can monitor their vehicle usage through their very own personalised online “dashboard” which keeps them updated on vehicle usage and cost, and, potentially, substantial savings on their car insurance. www.coverbox.co.uk/

The Governor’s Welfare Employment Committee announced the winners of its 2017 TANF Employment Awards of Excellence as it recognized 39 employers in Delaware who hire, train and maintain positive working relationships with employees who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits, and 47 TANF clients who have succeeded in the workplace despite the challenges they have faced.

The nominees in both the employee and employer categories were honored at a breakfast ceremony April 19 at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino.

The employee winners of the 2017 TANF Employment Awards of Excellence are:

•New Castle County: Gienavive Johnson

•Kent County: Patricia Milburn

•Sussex County: Valarie Purnell

•Statewide: Akira Collins

The employer winners of the 2017 TANF Employment Awards of Excellence are:

•New Castle County: Dust Away Cleaning

•Kent County: God’s Way Thrift Store

•Sussex County: Delmarva Clergy United in Social Actions (DCUSA)

•Statewide: Dover Downs Hotel & Casino

The event was hosted by the Governor’s Welfare Employment Committee, the Department of Health and Social Services, the Department of Labor, the Delaware Economic Development Office, and DART. All nominees were invited to the ceremony.

Cades Cove, TN

In the early 1870s when John Cable built his mill at the west end of Cades Cove, it was surrounded only by his fields. Like most farmers with gristmills, Cable's milling was a part-time job. Although the mill was open foro business on specific days, customers who came at other times could ring a large bell near the mill when they wanted to call John Cable from his fields.

After: I have long, busy days full of homework, classes and a part-time job. Not to mention the frail social life...

P.S. I know the light on my face is all weird, but blame that on the tree!

"Landmark city building to become hotel

Published Monday, 24 June 2013

A landmark building in the centre of Belfast is being turned into a new boutique-style hotel which will create more than 180 full and part-time jobs, it has been announced.

An estimated £12m is being spent to transform the former Scottish Mutual building opposite City Hall.

The building has been bought by Tullymore House Ltd, the same group that owns the Galgorm Resort and Spa, near Ballymena, for an undisclosed sum- but NAMA had put the building on sale for £1.75m.

The group said two bars and two restaurants are earmarked for the ground and first-floor areas.

The upper three floors of the 42,000 sq ft, five-storey building will be upgraded to accommodate up to 40 hotel bedrooms and 10 serviced apartments.

The company estimates that the hotel and entertainment areas could support up to 180 full and part-time jobs once up and running, which were additional to the estimated 100 jobs which could be supported during design, building and fit-out stages."

Lived in Joplin: She moved to Joplin in 1976, and has been in the same house since 1986.

Occupation: Karen recently retired, but before that she worked in the manufacturing industry.

Relatives: Her niece and one of her sons live in the Joplin area.

Project Type:

Currently Living: She is currently living in the damaged house.

Setbacks in Rebuilding: Karen got an insurance policy when she first moved into the house. Over the years, she kept the policy, but never updated it. Although, the damage to her house was extensive, the insurance company did not give her all of the money from the policy, because she had not updated or done anything with the policy for so long. She has had a lot of work done to the house, but still needs help.

Tornado Experience: Karen and her children had lived in the Midwest for a long time. Her kids used to get nervous during thunderstorms. She would always go outside and look at the on-coming storm and show them that it wasn’t that bad. The night of the tornado, she went out to watch the storm as she always did. The sky was a strange greenish/ black, and she heard the tornado sirens. Disturbed by the strange color in the sky, she ran and got her neighbor, and they ran across the street to a neighbor’s cellar. Karen, her neighbor, and their dogs hunkered in the cellar listening to the house groan and creek as the tornado tore through the city. When they emerged, Karen found her neighbors tree, the largest one in the neighborhood, landed on her house. She turned to her neighbor, whose tree it was, and said “I found your sycamore. If you want it, you can come and get it.”

Goals/ Hopes for the Future: Karen is looking forward to getting back into a routine. She wants to find a part time job, to supplement her retirement, and to work on her yard.

What do you do at your part time job when your supposed to be answering emails, taking phone calls and making notes…DOODLE LIKE A MOTHER F####R….and then you get fired!

i am going crazy cleaning my house in preparation for Thanksgiving weekend - my little sister and her husband are coming to stay tonight, and i have grocery shopping to do, three desserts to make, downstairs to dust still, upstairs to scrub top to bottom, laundry coming out my ears AND i still have to work today. (oh yeah! did i mention i'm a stay-at-home mom who now has a not-always-at-home part time job as a product photographer? which i am so so so THANKFUL for, believe me.)

soooo, hopefully my sis and her man will find dust monsters and piles of dirty laundry inviting.

i know i just love it.

171 High School - Hei Ping Li Jie; Beijing, China

ps - I found a very very part-time job teaching media and technology to various high schools in Beijing.

I started getting smart about how I conduct classes. After taking 1/2 hr for my students in one class to make a circle with chairs, I arrived 1/2 early for today's class and created the circle of chairs ahead of time so that when they come in, they will have no choice but to sit in the damn circle.

During my first class, I asked the students to get up from their chairs at their computers, and to take their chairs into the center of the room to make a circle so we could introduce ourselves to each other. Despite me repeating this in Chinese, the kids looked utterly confused. The ended up creating rows in front of me. I said NO - Create a Circle - I drew it with my hands. So then this took another 10 min - and they created a 1/2 circle - like a 1/2 moon around me. I asked them why they didn't understand my command - and they said that a teacher had never asked them to create a circle. so I was a bit flabbergasted - so I started grabbing chairs and putting them next to me to create this "circle." Then I asked them to sit, and no one would sit next to me - or at my latitude. AFter explaining to them that is was ok to sit next to me - I just started commanding individuals to sit next to me, they were just sooo nervous.

In China - the teacher is always at the head of the room. Their teaching style is a lot like pre-1970's -1800 American teaching style. Group/team work in America's education system was not really fully encouraged till the 80's - and now it is fully being encourage in the 90's and 00's.

I will give more teaching updates later.

Secretary Landgraf joined individuals with disabilities, their parents and providers for a panel discussion on how to advance employment and post-secondary education for young people with disabilities at the state level as part of the annual conference of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD).

During the Nov. 18 panel, Secretary Landgraf said transition work needs to begin as early as possible, and help to meet “the purpose and the promise” of the student and his or her family. The transition to employment or post-secondary education is crucial in breaking the cycle of poverty for so many individuals with disabilities, and she noted that many federal and state policies are coming into alignment on that front.

As for meeting expectations, Secretary Landgraf told the more than 300 people in attendance from across the country that it’s important for state officials to “listen and evolve with the person before you in order to fulfill their dreams.”

Joining on the panel were John Jr. and John III Bogasky. John III just got a job with the Smithsonian. “It’s a 10-year overnight success story,” his dad said. John III detailed the internships and part-time jobs he has had, leading up to this position. John Jr. said early education for parents is especially important in raising expectations and improving understanding about later success.

Josh is going to college with support from his mentor and case manager Andrew. “Andy is more than a mentor,” Josh said. “He is a friend.”

Ellie Carney just finished a position with an animal welfare group and expects to be hired. Her mom, Maedi Tanham Carney, said post-secondary programs are absolutely critical.

Stephanie Orlando, director of YOUTH POWER! at Families Together in Albany, N.Y., said her organization is seeing success with peers.
