This is the kit it's going to take to keep Connected Live and me as a presenter going for two and a half days of Scottish Learning Festival. I'm astonished at how much of it stuff I actually own myself.

PS: After Steve's comment I added the replacement prices - about £5000 in total. I should now point out that I do not travel with this all the time, and most of it would stay in work ;-)

Vic yards looking kind of full as the morning run to Guelph compiles.

I couldn't just write out a packing list. I had to sketch things out otherwise I knew I'd forget some key component of the outfit. I know. I over think things.

When I first started to think about going to Bonnaroo, I checked a bunch of web sites & blogs to see what it would be like.

When I mentioned going to Bonnaroo to some friends, we decided we'd first need to make a tentative packing & planning list to see if we could go. This was that list.

Many people find it stressful to move to a new house due to many #household items which are heavy and fragile. Unpacking too is a tiresome job if things were not packed in an orderly manner. Luckily professionals and expert movers have come up with tips and ways of packing in order to make every move on that specific day #systematic and smooth.

Get rid of the things you don’t use or need

When you are planning to move into a new house, consider getting rid of things that you no longer use. These include clothes, shoes, electronics and kitchen items such as old #coffee #makers and other items. Consider packing these items and give them to people of good will around your community. By so doing, the bulk of unnecessary items will reduce hence making the items to be packed to be less. It will also minimize overcrowding in your new house.

Consider looking for the best moving company one month prior the moving day

Compare prices of the moving companies and any other terms of payment to prevent unexpected costs during the #moving day. Also, check the moving company that you have chosen if it is licensed to ascertain the security of your items. Plan with the company the best flexible day to move in. It is also crucial to map the best and easiest route to use before the moving day. Look for possible traffic; detour and other constructions that might be scheduled on a moving day. This will make the journey more manageable and less tiresome as there will be no obstructions on the way.

When you are moving to a new house, start packing as early.

Start with things that are not being used for the time being. This includes decorations, some clothes, books that you have already read and other things that might not be of use. This is done by buying boxes from a nearby shop together with different packing materials like packing tapes, cardboard boxes, putty, extra screws and wrapping papers from a nearby hardware store. Pack items like books, toiletries, clothes as well as kitchen utensils in separate boxes and label the boxes at the top and on sides. This will make unpacking an easy task as each box will be taken to where those items are kept. Also, number your boxes to make sure that all things reached and no box was stolen.

Stop shopping like two weeks earlier

To avoid wasting any #food, consume all the shopping at home. Don’t buy more supplies unless you need them. Also, you can call friends and neighbors to take extra shopping that you might have. Pack extra toiletries and cleaning items in a different bag. These are items that will be used immediately when you rich the new home. Consider also packing extra clothes, laptop, and any other thing that you might need before unpacking. Call friends and relatives to help you in packing when you are moving to your new house. During the moving day ensure all things are handled with care especially electronics and other fragile items .When you reach to your new home, put someone in charge of unpacking process. This will help the task move smoothly without wasting time. Consider taking a picture of the new house before bringing your items inside. This is to show any damage that would be there.

Finally, appreciate all the people who helped you by ordering food, drinks, and snacks for them.

Going away for a few days. I will be taking with me my anxiety that I have forgotten something.

More photos later.

Packing Day

Taking 6 people on a 6-day trip is no joke when it comes to packing. I’m really trying not to overpack but it’s HARD y’all. I’m an OCD planner and thinker of contingencies. I’ve already signed up for Winn Dixie and Shipt accounts so we can have groceries delivered our first day there. Since we will be staying in a condo with a full kitchen, we plan on having 1-2 meals a day in the condo to save some money. I am getting so excited! I really hope we have a lovely, relaxing, beautiful vacation. Our family deserves it. I’m not sure I’ll be able to share photos from this week next Friday or not… I hope so, but it may take me an extra day or two to get everything ready.

- following the Swedish tradition of assigning the "20th Day of Christmas" as the "official" end of the Christmas season. :-) Which works just fine since nothing but the Advent Star and some electric candelabras in the windows gets put up until a couple of days before Christmas Eve...

I DO miss the extra bits of light in the windows, though - it still gets dark early...

Use the right size boxes

Put heavy items, like books, in small boxes; light items, like linens and pillows, in bigger ones. (Large boxes packed with heavy items are a common complaint of professional movers. They not only make the job harder but also have a better chance of breaking.)

Put heavier items on the bottoms of boxes, lighter items on top

And if you’re loading the truck yourself, pack heavier boxes first, toward the front of the truck, for balance.

Don’t leave empty spaces in the boxes

Fill in gaps with proper shipping supplies. Movers often won’t move boxes that feel loosely packed or unbalanced.

Avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box

It will make your packing quicker and your unpacking a lot easier, too.

Label each box with the room it’s destined for and a description of its contents

This will help you and your movers know where every box belongs in your new place. Numbering each box and keeping an inventory list in a small notebook is a good way to keep track of what you’ve packed―and to make sure you still have everything when you unpack.

Tape boxes well

Use a couple of pieces of tape to close the bottom and top seams, then use one of the movers’ techniques―making a couple of wraps all the way around the box’s top and bottom edges, where stress is concentrated.

If you’re moving expensive art, ask your mover about special crating

Never wrap oil paintings in regular paper; it will stick. For pictures framed behind glass, make an X with masking tape across the glass to strengthen it and to hold it together if it shatters. Then wrap the pictures in paper or bubble wrap and put them in a frame box, with a piece of cardboard between each framed piece for protection.

Bundle breakables

As you pack your dishes, put packing paper around each one, then wrap bundles of five or six together with more paper. Pack dishes on their sides, never flat. And use plenty of bunched-up paper as padding above and below. Cups and bowls can be placed inside one another, with paper in between, and wrapped three or four in a bundle. Pack them all in dish-barrel boxes.

Consider other items that will need special treatment

Vansant says his movers treat TVs like any other piece of furniture, wrapping them in quilted furniture pads. He points out, however, that plasma TVs require special wooden crates for shipping if you don’t have the original box and can be ruined if you lay them flat. If you’re packing yourself, double-box your TV, setting the box containing the TV into another box that you’ve padded with packing paper.

Up late packing, sorting, collecting AND sketching! Not long to go for me now...

PS. My true architects writing in caps (I wanted a dense block of text...)

I'm PACKING!

I leave tomorrow to spend the rest of the week with Nick! YAY!!!! I'm so excited! I feel like a kid before Christmas who's totally not going to be able to sleep!

This will be my last upload for about week since I'm not taking my comp! I'll still be taking my 365 though! And others! Look forward to alot of Nick!

Have a great week!

Return to the glorious homeland... Steve and I visit family and friends in Beijing and Shanghai, and experience the weirder parts of culture shock, like missing mundane things like Domino's Pizza. Also, ghost houses, the UChicago Center, malaxiangguo, relatives, and a lot of long subway rides. I kind of love this country anyway!

September 4, 2010 (Saturday) - For use in my blog today.

I comment about my life and opinions in my eJournal and images every single day. This photo was used there today. It was used there today.

I like lists, I really do, but sometimes I think much better visually than by something as abstract as words.

Hidden in the shadow of the camera bag: socks.

Daughter #1 seems to like making lists. I wonder who she can get that trait from?

I particularly like the pictograms.

new crop. things were bothering me.

i once had a rubbermaid bin that had a warning sticker on it prompting people to NOT store their small children in them. i had to laugh. but seriously, keep bags and refrigerators and rubbermaids away from small children.

the month of june will involve lots of packing, as we have to be out of the apartment by the 30th. the most important thing i'll have to do is label the boxes and bags so i remember what i've put in them. maybe this time i'll observe some kind of system or organisation instead of, y'know, doing things like i usually do them.

ah yes. i also have more ziploc bags than i know what to do with. this is a result of my mother's obsessive yet endearing habit of packaging everything in a ziploc bag when sending things or travelling. even ziploc bags are placed in ziploc bags. she's like the queen of meta.

The empty cage is returned to the truck following the panther’s release.

FWC releases female panther rescued as kitten in 2011

Biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) released a female Florida panther Thursday night at the Picayune Strand State Forest in Collier County.

The panther and its brother had been raised at the White Oak Conservation Center in Yulee since they were 5 months old. The FWC rescued the two panthers as kittens in September 2011 near the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed in northern Collier County after their mother was found dead.

“This panther is healthy and has grown to a size that should prepare her for life in the wild,” said Darrell Land, FWC panther team leader. “The goal in any panther rescue is to be able to release the animal back into the wild to aid in the recovery of this endangered species.”

The release was coordinated in consultation with partners from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Five other kittens of similar ages – three females and two males – have been raised at White Oak and released in south Florida.

“We are grateful for the work the staff at White Oak has done to prepare this panther and others for release,” said Land.

Biologists chose the Picayune Strand State Forest for the release of this panther after they evaluated the home ranges of other females in the region and found available space between them.

An estimated 100 to 160 adult and subadult panthers remain in south Florida.

Florida residents can support conservation efforts like the rescue and rehabilitation of this panther through the purchase of a panther license plate. Fees from license plate sales are the primary funding source for the FWC’s research and management of Florida panthers.

To report dead or injured panthers, call the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922) or #FWC or *FWC on a cell phone.

For more information on Florida panthers, go to www.floridapanthernet.org.

Andy was out of town for a couple days before we left for our DC trip. My mom came down to help out and take us to the airport. I had created a nice comprehensive packing list but of course left the actual packing to the day/evening before. Eep. I ended up taking two suitcases--one carryon size, one the next size up. Mostly to carry the kidco peapod tents, but it was also nice to have room for whatever we needed to bring.

Detailed image of splayed-end Anchor-brand asbestos packing material.

There are literally several thousand distinct asbestos products and respective applications collectively known as "asbestos products"; this image depicts but a single brand and one type of an often overlooked asbestos material: packing.

Essentially a rather durable rope-like material, asbestos packings can range considerably in thickness and construction (e.g.- braided, twisted, rubber/metal composite, round, square, etc.). Most packings are typically handled by dry cutting with saws or serrated knives and are usually crudely extracted from mechanical parts by picking the asbestos material apart piece-by-piece with simple corkscrew-type implements, which creates potential conditions for airborne asbestos exposure.

There are a few other applications for packing materials, however asbestos packing was most commonly used for creating internal seals around industrial pump shafts and pipe valve stems. As much as 1/2-pound (or more) of asbestos packing could be installed inside each pump or pipe valve housing and are oftentimes not even considered during asbestos surveys or exposure assessments primarily due to their inherent concealment.

Efficiency...

Things not pictured, but I am taking with me:

D50 (I had to take this photo with something)

Clothes on my back... shirt, convertible pants, boxers, hat, shoes, socks and a light jacket.

There is a lot that goes into planning a trip; from the flight reservations to picking a hotel, there are a million and one details to take care of. The final step in prepping for any vacation is packing. Though a tedious chore, there are a few tricks to make sure you maximize the space in your suitcase and don’t leave behind a single item.

What you chose to pack will be entirely dependent on your #destination and the weather. Before even opening your closet, it’s important to check that what the weather will be like wherever you are traveling to. When you’ve deduced what the weather will be, make a list of all the items you’re going to be packing. Plan ahead and decide what you’re going to be wearing each day of the trip which will help you avoid bringing too many things. An added benefit of making a list is that you can cross off every item as you add it to your suitcase so you won’t forget anything.

Begin #packing by adding your shoes and other bulky items to the bottom of the suitcase. As it’s important to utilize every inch of your suitcase, don’t waste the empty spaces in shoes, boots and packed purses as they are excellent spots to pack smaller items such as #jewelry. Once you have your bulky items arranged, you can use the space between the items for things like rolled up bathing suits, underwear or socks.

The next layer to be added to your suitcase should be your clothing. Though many people think that rolling your clothes is a best, it is actually more beneficial to pack folded clothes. The first layer on top of your bulky items should be the heaviest fabrics such as jeans, sweaters and jackets. As you add items to your suitcase make sure to leave room in the center for you toiletry bag. Any room left around the sides can be used for toothbrushes, hairbrush or other small items.

In addition to packing your toiletry bag in the center, anything fragile should also be placed in the middle so it can be buffered by your clothes. Remember to place perfumes, colognes and creams in zip-lock bags so that you don’t have to worry about liquids leaking on your clothing. Additionally, if you’re flying it’s important to ensure that all liquids are in travel size bottles.

The final layer of your suitcase should be comprised of clothing made of light fabrics which are prone to wrinkling. If there are items you want to be extra careful with, you can go one step further and wrap them in tissue paper. This might be important is you are traveling to a destination wedding and need to make sure your dress arrives completely intact. This top layer is also where you would pack a suit if your luggage lacks a specialized compartment.

Finally, it is also important that you bring your packing list to your destination with you. This way you can cross off every item as you add it back to your suitcase, making sure that nothing is left behind at the hotel. An added bonus of learning how to pack a suitcase is that you will be a better packer all around. If you ever have to break out your packaging supplies to ship items or move you will already know the more efficient way to get everything in the #boxes.

Example of a vintage pipe valve labeled as Walworth, with revealed asbestos packing around the valve stem, after being partially disassembled.

Some basic maintenance of mechanical systems that contain these valves sometimes requires personnel to dig out the fibrous asbestos textile material from inside the valve for replacement, oftentimes on a routine basis where dozens or hundreds of pipe valves might be present at a facility or within certain waterborne vessels.

I do not like packing.

I am planning on moving this weekend and spent some of this evening getting some packing done. I don't have a ton of stuff to move, but I always forget just how many books I own and how much space they take up. I've filled 3 boxes with just two shelves of books already! Only 4 more shelves to go. Plus clothes and miscellaneous other junk.

Our entire front room has been taken over by boxes, boxes, boxes.
