Dozens of handicaped people invaded the YPFB (national oil & gas company) compound in Santa Cruz, threatening to blow up 3 gas bottles in case of expulsion. In the morning of Aug. 12, clashes with the company's workers left various hurt on both sides, but the handicapped managed to stay.

1. This is my brother. :) He's fourteen.
2. He was kind of nervous about me taking pictures of him... This is the only photo I got where he didn't panic and pull a funny face haha.
3. I know it's ridiculous how I always fall back on Harry Potter when I have to write ten facts, but I am currently having an HP book marathon. :) I'm up to Goblet of Fire.

Sing-sing is a gathering of a few tribes or villages in Papua New Guinea. People arrive to show their distinct culture, dance and music. The aim of these gatherings is to peacefully share traditions. Villagers paint and decorate themselves for sing-sings.

Malagan ceremonies are the most large-scale and famous of the many events that take place within the malagan culture. They take place irregularly, and are typically large and complex events, taking several days, and requiring months or years of preparation.
While a malagan ceremony is always held in the name of one or more people who have died in recent years, it is not at all merely a mortuary rite. Many other interactions take place within the overall event, including announcements, repayment of debts, recognition of obligations, resolution of disputes, and many other customary activities.

Malagan carvings, now world-famous, are the wooden carvings which are created for use in malagan ceremonies. Traditionally these were burnt at the conclusion of the event; in modern times most are now retained, as the carving tradition is now only known by a few.

As I mentioned in my last post, I certainly still have more photographs to post from both my charity bike ride in Morocco and the DMU Boston meetup, but I've put off posting shots from the BU Photo Club twilight shoot at Lo Presti Park for far too long.
This particular shot was one that I had flagged as a keeper the moment I reviewed it on the LCD of my camera when I shot it. I've put off posting it because I couldn't decide whether or not people looking at the photo would like how the old pier posts blend into the blackness of the cityscape (I figured y'all wouldn't.) After several weeks of going back and forth, I was reminded of the fact (again) that this is my photograph and I like- no- love the colors and tones in this and even though I do like it when others say they enjoy my work, it's shouldn't become my primary motive for pursuing photography as I do- and it's not.

okay. i have 5 days of my 365 to make up for. i pretty much ignored it this entire week, and i'm sorry. i don't really even have much of an excuse for the second half of the week, except that it was rainy out and i didn't like the photos i took. now that the musical is over, however, i will actually be able to come home after school when it's nice and light out and take pictures. so, starting today, i'm going to get my 365 back on track and stop cheating so much, because right now i've cheated on far too much of my 365 by posting old photos.
anyway. that is a puddle in my yard, and really, i don't even want to know what was in that mud. i took a shower right after i took these :P actually, i was going to take more, but then my mom's boyfriend unexpectedly showed up so i ran inside soaking wet and went upstairs before he could see me because i didn't want him to think i'm crazy. hehe. i have more of these that i like, but i'm going to save them for later. i might use them to make up for a couple of the 365s i skipped. or for cheating on future 365s.

Fondée au VIe siècle par l'évêque Saint-Avit, elle fut rebâtie aux XIe et XIIe siècles, après avoir été brûlée par les Normands. Elle est remaniée au XIXe siècle par l'ajout du clocher et de dalles de lave en remplacement des tuiles romanes d'origine. Ces dalles ont été retirées depuis et la toiture refaite à l'identique de l'originale, en tuiles canal.
Une importante campagne de rénovation a débuté en 2007 à l'intérieur de l'église et s'est terminée fin 2008, rénovation qui suit celles des façades extérieures et du toit. Ces travaux ont consisté dans le nettoyage de toutes les pierres, la suppression des joints de ciments remontant à la rénovation du XIXe siècle, le rebadigeonnage des parements, la restauration des tableaux et la réfection des lustres afin de rendre l'église dans l'état où elle était en 1900. La crypte de l'église n'a pas été concernée par cette campagne de rénovation. Le dimanche 7 décembre 2008 la statue de Notre-Dame du Port a été réinstallée dans l'église (elle avait été conservé dans la cathédrale de Clermont pendant les travaux de rénovation), marquant ainsi la réouverture au public de l'édifice.
En 1998 elle a été inscrite au patrimoine mondial de l' Unesco au titre de l'inscription des chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle.
Son nom vient de ce qu'elle a été construite dans le quartier dit du « port », en latin «portus», c'est à dire l'endroit où l'on apportait les marchandises.

In 1998 it was registered with the world heritage of UNESCO to the title/titre of the inscription of the ways of Saint-Jacques-of-Compostelle.

Lake Titicaca is a lake located on the border of Peru and Bolivia. It sits 3,812 m above sea level, making it the highest commercially navigable lake in the world. By volume of water, it is also the largest lake in South America.
The lake is located at the northern end of the endorheic Altiplano basin high in the Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia. The western part of the lake lies within the Puno Region of Peru, and the eastern side is located in the Bolivian La Paz Department.
The lake is composed of two nearly separate sub-basins that are connected by the Strait of Tiquina which is 800 m across at the narrowest point. The larger sub-basin, Lago Grande (also called Lago Chucuito) has a mean depth of 135 m and a maximum depth of 284 m. The smaller sub-basin, Wiñaymarka (also called Lago Pequeño, "little lake") has a mean depth of 9 m and a maximum depth of 40 m. The overall average depth of the lake is 107 m.
Lake Titicaca is fed by rainfall and meltwater from glaciers on the sierras that abut the Altiplano. Five major river systems feed into Lake Titicaca. In order of their relative flow volumes these are Ramis, Coata, Ilave, Huancané, and Suchez. More than 20 other smaller streams empty into Titicaca, and the lake has 41 islands, some of which are densely populated.
Having only a single season of free circulation, the lake is monomictic, and water passes through Lago Huiñaimarca and flows out the single outlet at the Rio Desaguadero, which then flows south through Bolivia to Lake Poopó. This only accounts for about 10% of the lake's water balance.

More magnificent that one can imagine, the famous lake of Titicaca is an awesome sight: silent, endless, deep, peaceful, quiet, dangerous... Here the view is taken when sailing from the town of Copacabana to the island Isla de Sol.
Ever since I was young, I've had a very special bond with my Grandpa Al. We decided when I was in my early teens that we were soul mates. Not in the way you traditionally understand that term, but in a way that we both understood. We've always been able to tap into each other's spirits in a way nobody else can. In many ways, I am just like my grandpa. I love to tell stories, and often times I run off on tangents that take longer than the original story itself ever would have taken to tell. I don't like people to rush me to my point. I'm proud. I'm passionate. I wear my heart on my sleeve. And it doesn't take much to make me tear up and get emotional. These are all traits I believe I've inherited from my grandpa.
Every year for probably the last twenty years, my grandpa writes me a special note for my birthday. He always includes some bits of wisdom. Perhaps a poem he wrote, perhaps the words of another poet. But he never ceases to pass along some idea to me that he believes (and rightly so) will help to shape me into a stronger, warmer, better woman. And every year I've tucked those notes away for safe keeping. I pull them out occasionally, and invariably wind up tearing up as I read them. But there are a few quotes that have stuck with me so firmly that I need not pull out the letters to be reminded of their sentiment. The title to this photo is an excerpt from a poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox that my grandpa included in a letter to me during my junior year of college. It pops into my head at the most obscure times and fills me with warmth, love and comfort.
I can't think of anyone besides my parents who has influenced me in the way that my grandpa has. I hope that I have become the woman he always believed I would be. My gut tells me that I still have a ways to go. I'm sure my grandpa will weigh in on this at our 4th of July barbeque this year.

The Musée d'Orsay is a museum on the left bank of the Seine. It is housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, an impressive Beaux-Arts railway station built between 1898 and 1900. By 1939 the station's short platforms had become unsuitable for the longer trains that had come to be used for mainline services as French railways became electrified. After 1939 it was used for suburban services. Plans for demolition were cancelled and the suggestion to turn the station into a museum came from the Directorate of the Museums of France.
The museum holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1915, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography. It is probably best known for its extensive collection of impressionist and post-impressionist masterpieces (the largest in the world) by such painters such as Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, Sisley, Gauguin and Van Gogh. Many of these works were held at the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume prior to the museum's opening in 1986. The collection of art is deservedly world renowned, but I thought the architectural conversion of a railroad station into a museum was equally magnificent.
My mom wanted to take her umpteenth walk along the beach, my dad was hanging out by the boardwalk sketching, so I decided to see Daytona by foot. Not the main drag that has high end hotels on one side, and $30/night motels on the other, but some of the less tourist-ridden areas. First, I walked down Main Street, which caters to bikers in a way I've never seen before. Harley store after leather shop after biker bar after Harley store. I did, however, smile mightily as I passed one of those bars and heard Tom Petty's Free Fallin' playing on the radio. I don't care if you're 25 or 55, I think everyone has memories of driving around in the summer with that song playing on the radio.
After that, I walked over the bridge, onto the mainland, and across on Beach St, which clearly used to be the hub of Daytona Beach nightlife. There were beautiful shops, a quaint street setting, trees planted all along... and 2/3 of the shops were empty. It was sad to see only a handful of restaurants and antique shops clinging to life on what used to be the place to be in the 1960s. They had posters up in the windows of the empty shops with pictures from that era, proclaiming how you, too, should play a part in preserving Daytona's history.
Along that road, I found this old car dealership from the lat 60s, all boarded up and dirty. It's hard to say how long it's been in that state.
On Tuesday night I joined JUMP, BAC and hundreds of Toronto's Jewish community in a huge bonfire at Earl Bale's Park in the city's north end to celebrate Lag BaOmer, the days leading up to the Jewish holiday of Shavuot.
It is customary on this holiday to light bonfires to symbolize the spiritual light brought into the world that was impacted through the teachings of Shimon bar Yochai, the greatest teacher of Torah in his generation.
The holiday stems from the teachings of Kaballah, or Jewish mysticism, recently made popular by Madonna.
When I arrived at the park I saw lots of families having a good time with their young kids.
There was a clown making balloon animals and a few children wondering about sugared up with cotton candy.
There were plenty of local Hasidim present, with their wide-brimmed hats, long beards and tallith dangling below their belts. It was good to see many bring their four-legged friends with them too.
Kids of all ages took delight in throwing bits of wood onto the growing bonfire.
It wasn't until after dark that the bonfire really took hold and people brought out marshmallows to roast. One kid had a particularly Canadian, inventive method of roasting his marshmallows.
A couple of drummers, dressed all in white, handed out 20 djembe drums to the crowd and let them in an impromptu drum circle around the fire. They even took out a couple of shofars and played along with the beat.
One of the local rabbis tried to gain the crowd's attention to explain the night's significance, but it largely fell on deaf ears, as everyone was too busy enjoying the crackling of the fire, the drums, their friends and family.
By the end of the night, the atmosphere reminded me of a PG-rated version of some of the pit parties I went to back in my high school days, where we'd gather around a bonfire in a nearby ravine.
Maybe it was the sound of the drums, the crackling of the fire or the overall sense of community, but I began to feel a sense of connectedness and warmth with my fellow Jews on this otherwise chilly spring evening.

Pedro Brull as soloist. It's about time.
For more than two decades, Pedro Brull has been one of the best and most recognized singers of Puerto Rico. His strong vocal delivery has opened regular plazas for him in Colombia and New York where he visits regularly. As the lead singer of Orchestra Mulense, for years known as the orchestra of Puerto Rico's youth, Pedro has gained fame but the elusive fortune gathered by other singers has eluded the talented and jovial singer who doubles as a school teacher in his native Vega Baja.
"For a while, I had the feeling it was time to make a move," said Brull "but it's very difficult to leave a group of musicians to which you had been attached for most of your adult life". Gilberto SantaRosa, the most recognized Salsa singer in the world today, made Pedro's decision an easy one. SantaRosa offered to produce Brull on his new record label, Camínalo Discos, and with the push and expertise of a new and powerful business partner, Pedro finally has gotten the opportunity to break through as a solo artist with the release of Pronósticos.
This vehicle has been carefully chosen and orchestrated by Brull and his production team, creating a very danceable production that should be a viable option for those looking for a good Salsa product. Brull's vocal presentation is unique, and his ability to run the soneos uncanny. The musical arrangements were placed in the very capable hands of José Lugo who created an excellent path ably followed by Brull in another example of showmanship and entertainment chops. This is a fun recording. Listening to it makes you imagine the interaction in the studio and you can practically visualize the takes among the musicians.
Eight songs are included. The first, "El Malo de la Película", was made a hit as a ballad by all-time Latina songstress La Lupe. Here Curet Alonso's composition is played on a Salsa beat by Brull, which actually added to the song with his timely delivery. "Pronósticos" is another excellent theme that displays Brull's range and his capacity as a sonero in a great performance. Finally, "Asi Gordito me Quieren" -- Even being Fat they Love Me -- pairs him with the internationally acclaimed gordito Tito Nieves in an excellent performance that pays tribute to other famous people in the trade that have a few pounds on them.
We also recognize the voices of Gilberto SantaRosa and Víctor Manuelle backing up Brull, two very important godfathers to lend their gravitas to an exceptional outing. This is unquestionably a CD for dancers. The music is solid, the songs are fun and the performance can be characterized as
flavorful and happy. It took a long time, 22 years to be exact, for Pedro to come out as a soloist. It was worth the wait. Pedro Brull can now take his place amongst the Salsero elite. He has finally arrived. Congratulations, Pedro!

The Ingham County Arts Commission and the Ingham County Fair partnered in this project which brought together professional and student artists, and community residents to conceive of the images, design and paint the mural. The "Murinal" remained a landmark at the fairgrounds for over a decade but has now been painted out.

The "Murinal" a 1981 community arts project created a mural around the four sides of a bathroom building at the Ingham County Fairgrounds. Known as "the murinal" this community artwork depicted the Mason County rural countryside of farmland and wetlands, the Mason county courthouse, and the fairgrounds.

Thaipusam actually celebrates the birthday of the Hindu deity Subramaniam. On this occasion, Hindus show the sincerity of their faith. It is a time for making and fulfilling vows. Devotees pray for divine help and make vows. When their prayers are answered, they fulfil their vows.
To do this, a devotee would pierce his cheeks, tongue, face or other suitable body parts with sharp objects. Next his friends or relatives load a *kavadi on his shoulder. Finally, in a trance-like manner, he goes on a 4km journey of faith.
Others, including young children, might join the procession carrying only milk pots. The Thaipusam Singapore procession starts at the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon Road and ends at the Sri Thandayuthapani Temple on Tank Road.
At first look, one might think that the festival starts at one temple and ends at another. Not so. Many of the devotees start fasting a month before the Thaipusam Singapore festivities. Others fast a week. Yet others three days.
A Hindu friend said this to me, "If you are going to put a 12-inch skewer through your cheeks and a hundred spikes in your chest, you'd better take your fast seriously!"
* A kavadi is a cage-like structure carried by devotees during the Thaipusam Festival.
It is traditionally decorated with peacock feathers and aluminium plates which show images of Hindu deities. Sharp spikes criss-cross its lower section.
An elaborate kavadi might weigh up to 15kg! It is quite something just to lift it. But these chaps I saw actually walked with them for 4km - kavadis, skewers, hooks, spikes and all!
Some of them even skipped and danced with their kavadis. Either they have great endurance or they have some supernatural help.
The Internet is here seen as the new mirror in which we search our own likeness and identity.
The central figure, at the computer, [a self-portrait] has been toned down following the comment below by dou_ble_you, to whom, as always, my thanks for his critique. It was also, subsequently, removed, and then replaced, on a smaller scale, as here seen.

I am most grateful to Lensk for pointing me in that direction, as had forgotten Wright's Alchemist, though am most familiar with his work.
This piece was only possible with the initial inspiration from Idea-Listic [Robert Marinkovic] 's diabolical self-portrait on his profile page, and a great deal of help from dou_ble_you, who transformed my original into something far more creative and imaginative, which, I, in turn, have re-appropriated back onto my two original computer display screens.

Russian Field of Honour
On this Field of Honour are the graves of 865 Russian soldiers. 101 Of them died during the German occupation in or next to the nearby notorious Camp Amersfoort. These 101 Russian soldiers were made p.o.w. by the Germans en were transported in September 1941 in cattlewagons to Amersfoort, the Netherlands, as living propaganda-material. After a train journey of 14 days they arrived starving and were driven through the city of Amersfoort to the concentration camp.
The inhabitants of Amersfoort reacted with horror and tried to offer water, fruits and bread, but did not get the chance to reach them. 24 of these Russan soldiers died within 5 months from hunger, disease and maltreatment. The survivors were executed in groups of 4 the 9th of April 1942. On the execution place is now a memorial.
The other graves on this Field of Honour are of Russian soldiers that died from exhaustion and disease, after they were liberated by the American army from German p.o.w.-ship. Their remains were initially burried on the American Military Cemetary in Margraten (Dutch Limburg). They were reburried at this cemetary on a later date.
The monument is made of white marble from the former Sowjet Union.

Russisch Ereveld Amersfoort
Op dit ereveld liggen de graven 865 Russische militairen. Van hen stierven er 101 tijdens de Duitse bezetting in of nabij Kamp Amersfoort. Het was een berucht kamp, dat aan de Appelweg was gevestigd. Sinds 2004 beschikt de Stichting Nationaal Monument Kamp Amersfoort over een bezoekerscentrum waar uitgebreid informatie wordt gegeven over de geschiedenis van dit kamp en zijn overblijfselen.
De 101 Russen waren door het Duitse leger in Rusland krijgsgevangen gemaakt en werden in september 1941 als levend propagandamateriaal in veewagens naar Amersfoort vervoerd. Na een treinreis van 14 dagen kwamen zijn uitgehongerd aan en werden daarna in optocht door de stad naar het kamp gedreven. De inwoners van Amersfoort reageerden met afgrijzen; zij kwamen uit hun huizen met water, fruit en brood, maar kregen geen kans het aan de gevangenen te geven.
Van deze Russische soldaten stierven er 24 binnen 5 maanden aan honger, ziekte en mishandeling. De overlevenden werden op 9 april 1942 in groepjes van 4 doodgeschoten. Bij de fusilladeplaats - in de bosrand nabij het einde van de Appelweg - staat een gedenkzuil (Monument 'Koedriest' of 'Russenmonument' die aan deze massaexecutie herinnert.
De andere op dit ereveld begraven Russische militairen zijn voor het merendeel overleden aan de gevolgen van uitputting en ziekte, nadat zij door het Amerikaanse leger uit Duitse krijgsgevangenschap waren bevrijd. Hun stoffelijke resten waren aanvankelijk begraven op de Amerikaanse begraafplaats in Margraten. Later zijn zij naar dit Russisch ereveld overgebracht.
Het gedenkteken is gemaakt van wit marmer uit de voormalige Sovjet Unie.

About this event: Anyone who loves "The Right Stuff" and "The Legend of Pancho Barnes" will love the old Flabob Airport (Flay-bob), a true gem that will take you back in time; and even though the city of Rubidoux (Roo-bih-doo) surrounds it, there is still an incredible feeling of openness here, and today's sky was 'majestic'! This was the airport's Veterans Day tribute. And the Pacific Battleship Center went all-out to show the Battleship IOWA in video, displays, and questions answered by (PBC President) Robert Kent and volunteers. Many visitors signed-up for membership -- 'plank owners' -- and made donations to save the last of the battleships ~ USS IOWA as a floating museum in San Pedro, California. If the LA Harbor Commission rewards the thousands of hours already put into this effort, IOWA will open to the public at pier 87 -- on the main channel of Los Angeles harbor -- on the 4th of July, 2012..... everything now rides on the upcoming Nov. 18 meeting of the Los Angeles Harbor Commission.
Fussimanya es un popular restaurante de montaña que lleva décadas haciendo plenos a base de ofrecer cocina típicamente tradicional catalana bajo el lema “calidad, cantidad y precio”. Catorce comensales decidimos darnos un baño de autenticidad en este lugar, habiendo pactado previamente un menú a precio fijo y en el que todo (o casi todo) estaba incluido. En un lugar de esas características es habitual la agitación y el ruido en el ambiente, especialmente en un fin de semana del siempre conflictivo mes de Diciembre. Por fortuna, al estar ubicados en el comedor denominado “El Mirador” pudimos gozar de relativa tranquilidad y calificar con un aprobado justito el apartado confort. En cuanto a la comida, la cosa se saldó con buena nota dando validez al lema del lugar: comida sencilla pero de calidad, preparada con oficio, servida en cantidad y con un precio final que remite a tiempos pretéritos. Sin ninguna duda, es una de las mejores opciones en su estilo, sino la mejor.
En la fotografía: Carrilleras de cerdo al horno. Tiernas y sabrosas las carrilleras, rematadas con una especie de pisto o samfaina. Muy buenas también las judías de acompañamiento. Buen plato.
Lo mejor: la calidad de su cocina y lo moderado de los precios
Lo peor: las aglomeraciones, especialmente en fin de semana
Recomendado: reservar con mucha antelación, pedir mesa en el comedor denominado “Mirador”, continuar la carretera hasta su final (pasado el Parador Nacional) para disfrutar del precioso entorno natural de los alrededores del Monasterio de Sant Pere de Casserres

The estuary waterfront without marking is fenced off, mainly with barbed wire and razorwire, even if it is not an industrial site but wetlands, embankment or landfill. The next land-based access is off the map several kilometres to the north at St Kilda where you can access an embankment and a boardwalk.
Port Lincoln has a waterfront trail which follows the coast passing underneath grain conveyors, between silos, between the former power station and the cooling water inlet/outlet, between port buildings and wharfs, between the caravan park and the sea. It is possible.

Famous Chinese furniture maker, Ah Tay, and his iconic calabasa bed has remained one of the most coveted pieces of furniture in our history. Though instantly recognizable because of the obvious typical design elements, the scramble for genuine examples from the scores of reproductions continue to grow due to increasing demand from serious collectors. Calabasa bed – aptly named for the heavily gadrooned halved squash shape used for bed posts – is a juxtaposition of varied styles prevalent in Europe from the 1840s to 1880s: Gothic Revival, Rococo Revival and Renaissance Revival. This bed, in particular, has all the quintessential Ah Tay traits, crafted at the highest level – something that latter pieces will never be able to duplicate – that only the master himself can accomplish. Interestingly, there is age-appropriate numbering in Chinese characters on each calabasa support that matches with the corresponding post, thereby avoid mismatching the parts during assembly – a solid proof of Chinese hands in the making this bed. The lustrous patina and the unfeignable signs of usage accumulated over a long time are tactile testaments to its authenticity.
Ah Tay loved to incorporate tropical fruits in his beds. In this example, dayap fruits in varying degree of maturity are carved as decorative motif. Dayap (citrus aurantifolia) is a small tree native to Southeast Asia. Its most popular use in the Philippines is its rind added to leche flan or creme caramel for a distinct, sharp citrusy flavor. This is no coincidence as the original owners of the bed had a dayap farm in Pulupandan town in Negros, thus the sentimental association. They can be seen in the headboard bottom support, inside lyre posts, and from the canopy’s vaulted crests dangling gracefully. In a very good and sturdy condition. Found in a house in Mandaluyong.
