Help! What does one do with excess candy canes?
Since I was tagged by kirs, here's some random facts about me.
1. I check flickr as much as I check twitter and email. Which is like majority of the day!
2. Before getting a DSLR, I had ~50 GB of pics! I have a ton of film too! o_O
3. See kirs' number 6. Love taking pics, but not of me! Unless in a group or in a photo shoot like this one from tenchiboyx's photo stream.
4. See kirs' number 9. :P I too, am obsessed with puzzles, i.e. Rubik's Cubes. See this cube for instance.
5. I get bored easily. Like, really easily. I can be the most busiest person in the world, yet still be bored at the same time. It's analogous to being lonely in a group of 100's of people.
6. I volunteer my time as an event planner at several venues (trade show/convention/festival). Director for 2 of them, Manager for 1, and a point of contact for a city festival.
7. On top of event planning, I intend on going to Los Angeles and Las Vegas several times, Chicago, Hong Kong, Macau, and several other places all in 2010.
8. I honestly have no idea how I'll afford number 7, along with photography. :P
9. I wish to make more friends in Europe/Asia so I have people to talk to when I'm up :)
10. I still have candy canes to give out. :(
Hmmm... who to tag, who to tag....
(Yes, you have to do it again for the nth time! Your random facts are so amusing! XD)
And... anyone on twitter that is discreetly looking at my photos when I tweet about them! At least tell me if you have a photo stream! :P

The Snowberry Clearwing Moth is a small hummingbird moth which more closely resembles a large bumblebee rather than a hummingbird.
Like other hummingbird moths, this one flies during daylight. A similar, but larger, sphinx moth is the (Hemaris thysbe) Hummingbird Clearwing Moth.
Adults mimic bumblebees and are quite variable, both geographically and seasonally. The wings are basically clear, with dark brown to brownish-orange veins, bases and edges. The thorax is golden-brown to dark greenish-brown. The abdomen tends to be dark (black) with 1-2 yellow segments just before the terminal end. These yellow segments are in much sharper contrast to the rest of the abdomen than in somewhat similar species. Also note the relatively narrow dark outer margin of the hindwing. Most fresh specimens also have some blue "fur" tufts highlighting the first black band on the abdomen.
This moth hovers over flowers in full sunlight, producing a buzzing sound with its wings, similar to that of a hummingbird.
There are usually two broods annually from March-September depending upon latitude. The moth is seen along forest edges, in meadows, gardens and brushy fields. Adults like to nectar at lantana, dwarf bush honeysuckle, snowberry, orange hawkweed, thistles, lilac and Canada violet.
Caterpillars pass through five instars and are pale green on the back and darker green on the sides, with numerous white flecks in the final instar. The anal horn is bright yellow at base and blue-black at the tip. There are longitudinal brown stripes on the underside. The legs are almost white and barred with dark brown. There is a double row of yellow granules on the first segment which projects over head. The spiracles along side of body are very evident, being ringed in pale blue.
Larval host plants include Snowberry (Symphoricarpos), honeysuckle (Lonicera), Coralberry, viburnums, Blue Dogbane (Apocynum) and dwarf bush honeysuckle (Diervilla lonicera).
Pupation is in a very flimsy cocoon at ground surface. The inch long pupa is brown. In the fall, when larvae are ready to pupate, they take on an orange to burgundy hue.

Here we see the difference between the PHP MV-9 (flush barrel) and MV-17 (extended barrel). The barrel lengths of the MV-9 and MV-17 are 105mm (4.13 inch) and 140mm (5.51 inch) respectively. Both pistols were made more or less concurrently, though sporadically, over a three-year period during Croatia's War for Independence in the early 1990's.
The MV pistols borrowed freely from the designs of the Walther P-38 and the Beretta 92 series (called the M9 by the U.S. Military.)
Were one to field strip the MV, the Walther and the Beretta side by side, the similarities become apparent. The MV borrows the P-38's exposed barrel and slide stop and the Beretta's single recoil spring, takedown lever and high-capacity magazine. (The P-38 has twin recoil springs set into the slide rails.) Unlike either of its "parents," the MV has the safety lever mounted on the frame recessed into a cutout in the left grip panel. The safety lever does not decock the hammer.

Chances are, you’re probably familiar with the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas, or if not, you have probably heard about it. But, unless you live near the Tampa, Fla.- area, you probably haven’t heard about the Airstream Ranch. Located off the I-4. Frank Bates’ (owner of Bates RV) pays homage to Airstreams.
Bates, a former Texan native, came up with this idea as a way to honor Airstream’s 75th birthday celebrated a couple of years earlier. He recalled reading an interview with Stanley Marsh, the creator of the Cadillac Ranch, who said his creation was a way pay respect to Cadillacs, which he referred to them as the premier automobile people drove as they explored America. Well, the Airstream to Bates is the premier RV that people used (and still do) to camp in across America. Using a backhoe and crane, he buried seven big ones and one little on to represent 75 years. copied

Clouds moved in on Wednesday afternoon, making views of Crater Lake sparing, at best. I was a bit disappointed, as I really wanted to get another chance at a sunset shot from the north side of the lake. As I was driving back to camp, though, I came across this. With everyone else up on the rim looking at the lake, I got to enjoy this scene for 30 minutes or longer with not one other person around.

Working on my final project for Applications in Software (Programming).. We had to create some sort of web page incorporating what we had learned over the semester.
I of course created a Photography database/page..
It was actually a lot of fun. Programming was definitely my favorite class this semester.
Good morning everyone!

I took the day off work this Tuesday and went out to take some pictures with a friend of mine, Torgeir Sørensen www.ts-foto.no. We had an absolutely wonderful day!
We've had a period with quite heavy snowfall, and then we had a couple of days with really cold weather. So, first the trees got laden with snow and then the snow froze an made a kind of fur made of ice crystals. Just to make things even better, we only have abt 6 hours of sunlight nowadays. And since it is only up for this amount of time, it is very low in the sky all day. Basically making the 6 hours of sunlight a 6 hours sunrise/sunset. :-) This was one of my greatest photo trips ever.
This is taken from a small pier. I saw those little footsteps and just had to try to get them. I loved the way they "walked" into the sun. I am very happy with how little flare I got. I have used both a Lee 0.9 soft ND Grad and the Heliopan 105mm Polarizer, and no big issues with flare! Fantastic. :-)

Here's another version of the PHP (for Prvi Hrvatski Pistolj - First Croatian Pistol), the MV-9, made in the early 1990's in Croatia. The MV's are often described as a love child of a Walther P38 and a Beretta 92, as it has features of both. The barrel locking system is the tilting wedge with a "push button" used by both the Beretta and the Walther. It has the Walther's exposed barrel and the Beretta's high capacity magazine. The MV-9 seen here is somewhat shorter than the MV-17, as the muzzle is almost flush with the front of the slide.
In spite of the fact that it's a first attempt and that there was a particularly nasty war going on at the time, the pistol is fairly well made. It has the checkerboard Croatian crest stamped on the top of the slide, just behind the exposed portion of the barrel.
This one shows some use as evidenced by dings, scratches and honest wear, compared to the MV17, which came to me in nearly pristine, unissued condition.
The MV pistols were made by the arsenal which later became HS Arms, manufacturer of the HS2000, sold in the U. S. as the Springfield Armory XD series.
What a great summer we have had, I am looking forward to all the fun of Autumn :)
I hope all my flickr contacts are having a wonderful Summer/Winter as well!
It's going to take awhile to dig my way out of all these pics I have taken and not processed.

Insect wings are adult outgrowths of the insect exoskeleton that enable insects to fly. They are found on the second and third thoracic segments (the mesothorax and metathorax), and the two pairs are often referred to as the forewings and hindwings, respectively, though a few insects lack hindwings, even rudiments. Insect wings do not constitute appendages in technical parlance, as insects only have one pair of appendages per segment. The wings are strengthened by a number of longitudinal veins, which often have cross-connections that form closed "cells" in the membrane (extreme examples include Odonata and Neuroptera). The patterns resulting from the fusion and cross-connection of the wing veins are often diagnostic for different evolutionary lineages and can be used for identification to the family or even genus level in many orders of insects.
Fully functional wings are present only in the adult stage, after the last moult. The one exception is the order Ephemeroptera, in which the penultimate instar (also called the subimago) possesses well-developed and functional wings, which are shed at the final moult. Wings are only present in the subclass Pterygota, with members of the archaic Apterygota being wingless. Wings may also be lost in some pterygote clades, such as the fleas and lice.
The wings may be present in only one sex (often the male) in some groups such as velvet ants and Strepsiptera, or selectively lost in "workers" of social insects such as ants and termites. Rarely, the female is winged but the male not, as in fig wasps. In some cases, wings are produced only at particular times in the life cycle, such as in the dispersal phase of aphids. Beyond the mere presence/absence of wings, the structure and colouration will often vary with morphs, such as in the aphids, migratory phases of locusts and in polymorphic butterflies.
At rest, the wings may be held flat, or folded a number of times along specific patterns; most typically, it is the hindwings which are folded, but in a very few groups such as vespid wasps, it is the forewings.
How and why insect wings evolved is not well understood. Three main theories on the origins of insect flight are that wings developed from paranotal lobes, extensions of the thoracic terga; that they are modifications of movable abdominal gills as found on aquatic naiads of mayflies and that insect wings arose from the fusion of pre-existing endite and exite structures each with pre-existing articulation and tracheation.

www.kaminaria.org/index.php?article=10

Web search on "D P Carter" or "D.P.Carter Pontefract" will turn up much more. Interesting fellow. Airplanes were not his only interest.
This is a detail (re-arranged by me) of the original by Chicago artist, John Bakker, in a solo exhibition of his recent work (in the Hansen Gallery, Wheaton College, Illinois, Feb-March 2010), that invites audience engagement, and, if desired, re-arrangement, and thus reinterpretation.
Bakker, discovering that he is only the first interpreter of his own work, has thus taken a further step than is normative, by intentionally inviting his audience to engage with, and, if desired, re-arrange, and thus reinterpret his work.

The work, of which this is a detail, is itself based on Albrecht Durer's 1525 woodcut of a man demonstrating one means of perspective drawing, of a recumbent nude woman, as seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/59118828@N00/4373770841/
I don't know if I can yell any louder,
How many times have I kicked you out of here?
Or said something insulting?
I can be so mean when I wanna be,
I am capable of really anything,
I can cut you into pieces,
When my heart is broken.
Please don't leave me
I always say how I don't need you
But it's always gonna come right back to this
Please don't leave me
How did I become so obnoxious,
What is it with you that makes me act like this,
I've never been this nasty,
Can't you tell that this is all just a contest?
The one that wins will be the one that hits the hardest,
But baby I don't mean it,
I mean it, I promise
Please don't leave me
I always say how I don't need you
But it's always gonna come right back to this
Please don't leave me
I forgot to say out loud,
How beautiful you really are to me,
I can't be without,
You're my perfect little punching bag,
And I need you
I'm sorry.

The focus locked on nicely for this one. Unfortunately, the chosen aperture meant that the background is not blurry enough and I really find those leaves distracting. I'm still on that learning curve!
The warthog or common warthog (Phacochoerus africanus, "African Lens-Pig") is a wild member of the pig family that lives in Africa. The common name comes from the four large wart-like protrusions found on the head of the warthog, which serve the purpose of defense when males fight. They are the only widely recognised species in their genus, though some authors divide them into two species. On that classification, P. africanus is the common (or northern) warthog and P. aethiopicus is the desert warthog, also known as the Cape or Somali warthog.
The male is called a boar, the female a sow, and the young piglets. A group is called a sounder. Warthogs are fast runners and quite capable jumpers. They will often run with their tails in the air. Despite poor eyesight, warthogs have a good sense of smell, which they use for locating food, detecting predators and recognizing other animals. Although capable of fighting, and males will aggressively fight each other during mating season, a primary defense is to flee by means of fast sprinting. The main warthog predators are humans, lions, leopards, crocodiles, and hyenas. Cheetahs are also capable of catching small warthogs. Warthogs have been observed allowing banded mongooses to groom them to remove ticks.

Chichen Itza (pronounced /tʃiːˈtʃɛn iːˈtsɑː/; from Yucatec Maya: Chi'ch'èen Ìitsha', "At the mouth of the well of the Itza") is a large pre-Columbian archaeological site built by the Maya civilization located in the northern center of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the Yucatán state, present-day Mexico.
Chichen Itza was a major regional focal point in the northern Maya lowlands from the Late Classic through the Terminal Classic and into the early portion of the Early Postclassic period. The site exhibits a multitude of architectural styles, from what is called “Mexicanized” and reminiscent of styles seen in central Mexico to the Puuc style found among the Puuc Maya of the northern lowlands. The presence of central Mexican styles was once thought to have been representative of direct migration or even conquest from central Mexico, but most contemporary interpretations view the presence of these non-Maya styles more as the result of cultural diffusion.
The ruins of Chichen Itza are federal property, and the site’s stewardship is maintained by Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (National Institute of Anthropology and History, INAH). The land under the monuments, however, is privately-owned by the Barbachano family.
The Maya name "Chich'en Itza" means "At the mouth of the well of the Itza." This derives from chi', meaning "mouth" or "edge", and ch'e'en, meaning "well." Itzá is the name of an ethnic-lineage group that gained political and economic dominance of the northern peninsula. The name is believed to derive from the Maya itz, meaning "magic," and (h)á, meaning "water." Itzá in Spanish is often translated as "Brujas del Agua (Witches of Water)" but a more precise translation would be Magicians of Water.
The name is often represented as Chichén Itzá in Spanish and when translated into other languages from Spanish to show that both parts of the name are stressed on their final syllables. Other references prefer to employ a more rigorous orthography in which the word is written according to Maya language, using Chich'en Itzá (pronounced [tʃitʃʼen itsáʔ]. This form preserves the phonemic distinction between ch' and ch, since the base word ch'e'en (which, however, does have a neutral tone vowel "e" in Maya and is not accented or stressed in Maya) begins with a glottalized affricate. The word "Itzá'" has a high rise final "a" that is followed by a glottal stop (indicated by the apostrophe).
There is evidence in the Chilam Balam books that there was another, earlier name for this city prior to the arrival of the Itza hegemony in northern Yucatán. This name is difficult to define because of the absence of a single standard of orthography, but it is represented variously as Uuc Yabnal, Uuc Hab Nal, or Uc Abnal. While most sources agree the first word means seven, there is considerable debate as to the correct translation of the rest. Among the translations suggested are “Seven Bushes,” “Seven Great Houses,” or “Seven Lines of Abnal.”
