The Soligas are a tribe that inhabits the Biligirirangan and associated hill ranges in Southern Karnataka, India. Their population numbers close to 20000, although the population in and around Biligrirangan Hills is only 2000.

The word 'Soliga' means 'one who has come from within a bamboo'. The Soligas believe that their ancestors originated from the bamboo. The tribal settlement is called Podu. It consists of a group of usually 10 to 50 huts. The huts are made of bamboos and dried grass. The door is a portable bamboo frame and usually 3 feet in height.

The religion of the Soligas is the poetry of their life. They do not find God to be away or alien but feel His presence in the forest, in Nature and in every blade of grass. They revere a big Champak tree (Dodda Sampige in local tongue) in the interior forest.

"The Lord of Dodda Sampige Do protect us! The creeper that hangs over the tree Swings gently as a cradle for Thee."

Traditionally, the Soligas led a seminomadic life and subsisted on small game. Shifting cultivation, coffee and minor forest produce like honey, wild roots, tubes and fruits. Ragi is their staple food.

They are increasingly being brought to the 'main-stream' with an active Government and NGO initiative (such as VGKK). Many have been given lands closer to 'civilization' and most of the forest-dwelling population have been brought together into clusters called Podus. Nowadays their homes are being constructed with brick and with the arrival of DTH Satellite Television in the area, most houses have television sets as well!

Notes: Marty and I played hooky yesterday. The forecast was for sun and 66 degrees (f). For January, that's a pretty rare treat for us. So we packed up our gear and headed to the beach. Or "down the shore" as we like to say in New Jersey. The temps by the ocean were not to meet the expected 60+ temps but nonetheless, it was a spectacular day out. We didn't see a lot of different or new species, sans this one.

Horned Larks have probably been there many times before, but, thanks to a guy we met out on the jetty (Thanks, Todd!) we were pointed in the right direction. I scooted on my rear end, propping my lens on my knees (with bean bag) a good 30 feet to get this shot. High sun and white sand, make for challenging shooting. I chose this image to share because the horns are so predominantly displayed.

About 3/4 the way through the day of shooting I realized I was shooting in JPG mode. Gulp. But alas, as it turned out, no harm done. It ended up making the post work, well... a breeze if you want to know the truth. Can I pull as much out of shadows, etc? No... but for a day out having fun... who cares? I think I may opt to let my camera do the heavy work next time too.

Running php tests on Mac Book Pro laptops is perfectly ok, except during testfest it took ages to run these tests

i carry your heart with me (carry it in my heart) I am never without it (anywhere i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling)

no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true) and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of the tree called life; which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)

and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart ( i carry it in my heart)

White are the far-off plains, and white

The fading forests grow;

The wind dies out along the height,

And denser still the snow,

A gathering weight on roof and tree,

Falls down scarce audibly.

The road before me smooths and fills

Apace, and all about

The fences dwindle, and the hills

Are blotted slowly out;

The naked trees loom spectrally

Into the dim white sky.

The meadows and far-sheeted streams

Lie still without a sound;

Like some soft minister of dreams

The snow-fall hoods me round;

In wood and water, earth and air,

A silence everywhere.

Save when at lonely intervals

Some farmer's sleigh, urged on,

With rustling runners and sharp bells,

Swings by me and is gone;

Or from the empty waste I hear

A sound remote and clear;

The barking of a dog, or call

To cattle, sharply pealed,

Borne echoing from some wayside stall

Or barnyard far afield;

Then all is silent and the snow falls

Settling soft and slow

The evening deepens and the grey

Folds closer earth and sky

The world seems shrouded, far away.

Its noises sleep, and I secret as

Yon buried streams plod dumbly on and dream.

Can I lick you??

It's been a looong time since I last uploaded something... pretty busy weeks, I can tell you

Well, by the way, I've been tagged by Arkaitse and babygreys lol

This is how it goes. List 10 things that your friends may or may not know about you, but that are true.

----

Well...

1.- When I was a toddler, another child from the nursery shoved me and I fell to the ground; I broke my tongue -_- (but it's all right now :P )

2.- I had almost been run over by a coach when I was a child @_@

3.- Again, when I was a child, I was playing with my bro very close to the piece of furniture where the TV was. Long story short, eventually the TV fell over myself. Again, no harm was done (except a very subtle aversion towards the TV, lol)

4.- A couple of years ago, I won a fantastic HP all-in-one printer in a photographic contest; I took part with a photo of my cat

5.- I'm righthanded; however, I feel more comfy using the left side of my body (except when it's time for writing/drawing)

6.- I wish (and I would love) to travel to Iceland :)

7.- I'm 24 years old, but people who doesn't know me very well tend to think that I'm 18-20 T_T

8.- I looove pasta and pizza... and I love to cook! And looks like I'm pretty skilled at it

9.- Very young kids tend to annoy me after a while... mainly when they start yelling and jumping

10.- And finally... I didn't like cats at all until I found Ka, my first cat :) he taught me how gentle and sweet a cat can be

The Registan was the heart of the ancient Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The name Registan (ریگستان) means "Sandy place" in Persian.

The Registan was a place of public executions, where also people gathered to hear royal proclamations, heralded by blasts on enormous copper pipes called dzharchis.

The three madrasahs of the Registan are: Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1417–1420), the Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619–1636) and the Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1646–1660). Madrasah is an Arabic term meaning a Muslim clergy academy.

The Ulugh Beg Madrasah has its imposing portal with lancet arch facing the square. The corners are flanked by the high well-proportioned minarets. Mosaic panel over the entrance arch is decorated by geometrical stylized ornaments. The square-shaped courtyard includes a mosque, lecture rooms and is fringed by the dormitory cells in which students lived. There are deep galleries along the axes. Originally the Ulugh Beg Madrasah was a two-storied building with four domed darskhonas (lecture room) at the corners. The madrasah was one of the best clergy universities of the whole Moslem Orient of the 15th century. Abdurakhman Djami, a prominent poet, scientist and philosopher studied there. Ulugh Beg himself gave lectures there. During Ulugbek's government the Madrasah was a centre of secular science. In the 17th century the ruler of Samarkand Yalangtush Bakhodur ordered the construction of the Sher-Dor and Tillya-Kori madrasahs. The Sher-Dor (Having Tigers) Madrasah was designed by architect Abdujabor. The decoration of the madrasah is not as refined as that on the 15th century - "golden age" of Samarkand architecture. Anyway, the harmony of large and small rooms, exquisite mosaic decor, monumentality and efficient symmetry - all these put the structure among the best architectural monuments of Samarkand.

Ten years later the Tilya-Kori Madrasah was built, the name means "Gilded". It was not only the place of training students, but also it played the role of grand mosque. It has two-storied main facade, vast courtyard fringed by dormitory cells with four galleries along axes. Mosque building (see picture 6) is situated in the western section of the courtyard. The main hall of the mosque is abundantly gilded.

To the east of Tilya-Kori Madrasah the mausoleum of Shaybanids (16 century) is located (see picture). The real founder of Shaybanid power was Muhammad Shaybani - grandson of Abu'l Khair. In 1500, with the backing of the Chaghataite Khanate, then based in Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Muhammad Shaybani has conquered Samarkand and Bukhara from their last Timurid rulers. The founder of the dynasty then turned on his benefactors and in 1503 took Tashkent. He captured Khiva in 1506 and in 1507 he swooped down on Merv (Turkmenistan), eastern Persia, and western Afghanistan. The Shaybanids stopped the advance of the Safavids, who in 1502 had defeated the Akkoyunlu (Iran). Muhammad Shaybani was a leader of nomadic Uzbeks. During the ensuing years they substantially settled down in oases of Central Asia. The Uzbek invasion of 15 c. was the last component of the today's Uzbek nation ethnogeny.

The ancient trading dome Chorsu is situated right behind the Sher-Dor. Now it is well restored. The existence of the trading dome at this place confirms the information that Registan was medieval Samarkand's commercial center and the plaza was probably a wall to wall market. During the Soviet era, the site was restored, which included digging down 3 meters to its original level to expose the buildings' full height.

Yes, its really true. They do bell the cows in Switzerland.

Arriving here from a long trip from Asia, I was already on the road with my Flickr Friend Peru2u, in this beautiful country.

There are many interesting things about Switzerland, which many of us may have heard about. For example, that it has never fought a war in over 600 years. That it has probably the most number of banks per capita. That it has the best trained soldiers, who go on to serve the Vatican etc. etc.

Here I found one of the more well known Swiss Specialities. The belled cow. I was not suprised to see the bell on the cow, as I had heard of it before. But what surprised me was the size of the bells. Some of the cows had huge bells that were so gigantic. Its hard to believe that they actually enjoy wearing it.

PS: I have to say that these cows fed on fresh grass, are atleast 20% bigger than the cows we see in India, who feed only on old disposed newspapers or wall posters.

According to Wikipedia, the Waved Albatross, breeds in the Galapagos Islands and feeds off the coast of South America. The need for wind to enable gliding is the reason albatrosses are for the most part confined to higher latitudes; being unsuited to sustained flapping flight makes crossing the doldrums extremely difficult. The exception, the Waved Albatross, is able to live in the equatorial waters around the Galapagos Islands because of the cool waters of the Humboldt Current and the resulting winds. These medium-sized albatrosses measuring about 34-35 inches (86–90 cm) long, weighing in at about 7.5 lbs (3.4 kg), and having a wingspan 7.4 feet (2.25m). They are distinctive for their yellowish-cream neck and head, which contrasts with their mostly brownish bodies. Even more distinctive is the very long, bright yellow bill, which looks disproportionately large in comparison to the relatively small head and long, slender neck. They also have chestnut brown upper parts and under parts, except for the breast, with fine barring, a little coarser on the rump. They have brown upper-wings, back, and tail, along with a whitish breast and underwings. Their axillaries are brown. Juveniles are similar to adults except for more white on their head. Chicks have brown fluffy feathers. The lifespan of this species may reach 40 to 45 years.

If you need another reason to make your visit to the Galapagos in July, here it is. These guys nest here in late June-July and then they leave the Galapagos until the next nesting period during the following late June-July.

~ Finally made it to this cafe, it has been opened for a year, but for one reason or another I didn't go until now. They serve Intelligentsia coffee.

The Cafe's owner Paul Joo is a very friendly person, and he has extensive knowledge about his coffee.

I really liked this shop, well prepared coffee, small, but comfortable setting (they are expanding soon), humble, and great customer service. I think I'll be visiting this shop often. A great shop to get your good coffee in Koreatown, and they open late and that works great for me.

Shot from a moving vehicle at 50mph!! A good but probably dangerous way to travel was to sit in the back of the utility vehicle we were using to get around. you get a 180 degree view with no windscreen distortion then.

Using a Trek Tech Optera minipod I was able to keep the 5D and great white lens steady. Having bright african light helps a lot for fast shutter speeds too

Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus)

The sacred ibis was revered by the ancient Egyptians, who believed that the god Thoth, who symbolized wisdom and knowledge, came to earth in the form of an ibis.

The sacred ibis is pictured in ancient Egyptian murals, and mummified specimens have been found in many burial sites; however, because of extensive swamp drainage and reclamation of land, the sacred ibis is now extinct in Egypt.

While no longer found in Egypt, the sacred ibis is common throughout its present range. The sacred ibis lives in marshes, swamps, riverbanks, flooded farmlands and coastal lagoons in sub-Saharan Africa and in the Persian Gulf region. The species has been introduced in France, Italy, Spain and the southeastern part of the United States.

It is an opportunistic feeder. In addition to the fish, snails, frogs and aquatic insects which make up the majority of the ibis’s diet, these birds will also sometimes prey on the eggs and young of other bird species. They also are often found scavenging in rubbish dumps and occasionally scrounging meals in outdoor restaurants.

The sacred ibis is a large bird, measuring 25 to 29 inches in length. It has long legs and a thin, down-curved bill which is sensitive to touch and used by the bird to probe for food in mud and underwater. White feathers cover most of the bird’s body, with black plumes on its rump. The scaly skin on the bald head, neck, bill, legs and partially-webbed feet is black. The average adult weighs about three pounds.

Unlike most other ibises, the sacred ibis is a very quiet bird. The only sounds it makes are low croaks while on its breeding grounds. The sacred ibis nests colonially, often sharing roosting areas not only with its own species but also with storks, herons, spoonbills and cormorants. The male and female build an untidy platform nest out of sticks in a tree or bush. Both parents incubate the clutch of 2 to 5 eggs for about three weeks, and then take turns feeding the hatchlings. While the young leave the nest when they are 14 to 21 days old, their parents continue to feed them until they gain their flight feathers and leave the colony after about 35 to 48 days.

Unified Turbine Based Combined Cycle. Current technologies and what Lockheed is trying to force on the Dept of Defense, for that low speed Mach 5 plane DOD gave them $1 billion to build and would disintegrate above Mach 5, is TBCC. 2 separate propulsion systems in the same airframe, which requires TWICE the airframe space to use.

Unified Turbine Based Combined Cycle is 1 propulsion system cutting that airframe deficit in half, and also able to operate above Mach 10 up to Mach 15 in atmosphere, and a simple nozzle modification allows for outside atmosphere rocket mode, ie orbital capable.

Additionally, Reaction Engines maximum air breather mode is Mach 4.5, above that it will explode in flight from internal pressures are too high to operate. Thus, must switch to non air breather rocket mode to operate in atmosphere in hypersonic velocities. Which as a result, makes it not feasible for anything practical. It also takes an immense amount of fuel to function.

Advanced Additive Manufacturing for Hypersonic Aircraft

Utilizing new methods of fabrication and construction, make it possible to use additive manufacturing, dramatically reducing the time and costs of producing hypersonic platforms from missiles, aircraft, and space capable craft. Instead of aircraft being produced in piece, then bolted together; small platforms can be produced as a single unit and large platforms can be produces in large section and mated without bolting. These techniques include using exotic materials and advanced assembly processes, with an end result of streamlining the production costs and time for hypersonic aircraft; reducing months of assembly to weeks. Overall, this process greatly reduced the cost for producing hypersonic platforms. Even to such an extent that a Hellfire missile costs apx $100,000 but by utilizing our technologies, replacing it with a Mach 8-10 hypersonic missile of our physics/engineering and that missile would cost roughly $75,000 each delivered.

Materials used for these manufacturing processes are not disclosed, but overall, provides a foundation for extremely high stresses and thermodynamics, ideal for hypersonic platforms. This specific methodology and materials applications is many decades ahead of all known programs. Even to the extend of normalized space flight and re-entry, without concern of thermodynamic failure.

*Note, most entities that are experimenting with additive manufacturing for hypersonic aircraft, this makes it mainstream and standardized processes, which also applies for mass production.

What would normally be measured in years and perhaps a decade to go from drawing board to test flights, is reduced to singular months and ready for production within a year maximum.

Unified Turbine Based Combined Cycle (U-TBCC)

To date, the closest that NASA and industry have achieved for turbine based aircraft to fly at hypersonic velocities is by mounting a turbine into an aircraft and sharing the inlet with a scramjet or rocket based motor. Reaction Engines Sabre is not able to achieve hypersonic velocities and can only transition into a non air breathing rocket for beyond Mach 4.5

However, utilizing Unified Turbine Based Combine Cycle also known as U-TBCC, the two separate platforms are able to share a common inlet and the dual mode ramjet/scramjet is contained within the engine itself, which allows for a much smaller airframe footprint, thus engingeers are able to then design much higher performance aerial platforms for hypersonic flight, including the ability for constructing true single stage to orbit aircraft by utilizing a modification/version that allows for transition to outside atmosphere propulsion without any other propulsion platforms within the aircraft. By transitioning and developing aircraft to use Unified Turbine Based Combined Cycle, this propulsion system opens up new options to replace that airframe deficit for increased fuel capacity and/or payload.

Enhanced Dynamic Cavitation

Dramatically Increasing the efficiency of fuel air mixture for combustion processes at hypersonic velocities within scramjet propulsion platforms. The aspects of these processes are non disclosable.

Dynamic Scramjet Ignition Processes

For optimal scramjet ignition, a process known as Self Start is sought after, but in many cases if the platform becomes out of attitude, the scramjet will ignite. We have already solved this problem which as a result, a scramjet propulsion system can ignite at lower velocities, high velocities, at optimal attitude or not optimal attitude. It doesn't matter, it will ignite anyways at the proper point for maximum thrust capabilities at hypersonic velocities.

Hydrogen vs Kerosene Fuel Sources

Kerosene is an easy fuel to work with, and most western nations developing scramjet platforms use Kerosene for that fact. However, while kerosene has better thermal properties then Hydrogen, Hydrogen is a far superior fuel source in scramjet propulsion flight, do it having a much higher efficiency capability. Because of this aspect, in conjunction with our developments, it allows for a MUCH increased fuel to air mixture, combustion, thrust; and ability for higher speeds; instead of very low hypersonic velocities in the Mach 5-6 range. Instead, Mach 8-10 range, while we have begun developing hypersonic capabilities to exceed 15 in atmosphere within less then 5 years.

Conforming High Pressure Tank Technology for CNG and H2.

As most know in hypersonics, Hydrogen is a superior fuel source, but due to the storage abilities, can only be stored in cylinders thus much less fuel supply. Not anymore, we developed conforming high pressure storage technology for use in aerospace, automotive sectors, maritime, etc; which means any overall shape required for 8,000+ PSI CNG or Hydrogen. For hypersonic platforms, this means the ability to store a much larger volume of hydrogen vs cylinders.

As an example, X-43 flown by Nasa which flew at Mach 9.97. The fuel source was Hydrogen, which is extremely more volatile and combustible then kerosene (JP-7), via a cylinder in the main body. If it had used our technology, that entire section of the airframe would had been an 8,000 PSI H2 tank, which would had yielded 5-6 times the capacity. While the X-43 flew 11 seconds under power at Mach 9.97, at 6 times the fuel capacity would had yielded apx 66 seconds of fuel under power at Mach 9.97. If it had flew slower, around Mach 6, same principles applied would had yielded apx 500 seconds of fuel supply under power (slower speeds required less energy to maintain).

Enhanced Fuel Mixture During Shock Train Interaction

Normally, fuel injection is conducted at the correct insertion point within the shock train for maximum burn/combustion. Our methodologies differ, since almost half the fuel injection is conducted PRE shock train within the isolator, so at the point of isolator injection the fuel enhances the combustion process, which then requires less fuel injection to reach the same level of thrust capabilities.

Improved Bow Shock Interaction

Smoother interaction at hypersonic velocities and mitigating heat/stresses for beyond Mach 6 thermodynamics, which extraordinarily improves Type 3, 4, and 5 shock interaction.

6,000+ Fahrenheit Thermal Resistance

To date, the maximum thermal resistance was tested at AFRL in the spring of 2018, which resulted in a 3,200F thermal resistance for a short duration. This technology, allows for normalized hypersonic thermal resistance of 3,000-3,500F sustained, and up to 6,500F resistance for short endurance, ie 90 seconds or less. 10-20 minute resistance estimate approximately 4,500F +/- 200F.

*** This technology advancement also applies to Aerospike rocket engines, in which it is common for Aerospike's to exceed 4,500-5,000F temperatures, which results in the melting of the reversed bell housing. That melting no longer ocurrs, providing for stable combustion to ocurr for the entire flight envelope

Scramjet Propulsion Side Wall Cooling

With old technologies, side wall cooling is required for hypersonic flight and scramjet propulsion systems, otherwise the isolator and combustion regions of a scramjet would melt, even using advanced ablatives and ceramics, due to their inability to cope with very high temperatures. Using technology we have developed for very high thermodynamics and high stresses, side wall cooling is no longer required, thus removing that variable from the design process and focusing on improved ignition processes and increasing net thrust values.

Lower Threshold for Hypersonic Ignition

Active and adaptive flight dynamics, resulting in the ability for scramjet ignition at a much lower velocity, ie within ramjet envelope, between Mach 2-4, and seamless transition from supersonic to hypersonic flight, ie supersonic ramjet (scramjet). This active and dynamic aspect, has a wide variety of parameters for many flight dynamics, velocities, and altitudes; which means platforms no longer need to be engineered for specific altitude ranges or preset velocities, but those parameters can then be selected during launch configuration and are able to adapt actively in flight.

Dramatically Improved Maneuvering Capabilities at Hypersonic Velocities

Hypersonic vehicles, like their less technologically advanced brethren, use large actuator and the developers hope those controls surfaces do not disintegrate in flight. In reality, it is like rolling the dice, they may or may not survive, hence another reason why the attempt to keep velocities to Mach 6 or below. We have shrunken down control actuators while almost doubling torque and response capabilities specifically for hypersonic dynamics and extreme stresses involved, which makes it possible for maximum input authority for Mach 10 and beyond.

Paradigm Shift in Control Surface Methodologies, Increasing Control Authority (Internal Mechanical Applications)

To date, most control surfaces for hypersonic missile platforms still use fins, similar to lower speed conventional missiles, and some using ducted fins. This is mostly due to lack of comprehension of hypersonic velocities in their own favor. Instead, the body itself incorporates those control surfaces, greatly enhancing the airframe strength, opening up more space for hardware and fuel capacity; while simultaneously enhancing the platforms maneuvering capabilities.

A scramjet missile can then fly like conventional missile platforms, and not straight and level at high altitudes, losing velocity on it's decent trajectory to target. Another added benefit to this aspect, is the ability to extend range greatly, so if anyone elses hypersonic missile platform were developed for 400 mile range, falling out of the sky due to lack of glide capabilities; our platforms can easily reach 600+ miles, with minimal glide deceleration.

This Veritas RS was purchased by the current owner in 2001 from the assets of its deceased owner Björn Övre. Mr. Övre was a collector of Veritas and early BMW cars who has purchased already in the 1950s and 1960s several Veritas cars in Belgium and imported them to Norway. He was indeed well known in Veritas circles and often a most welcomed guest at Veritas meetings at Meßkirch and at the Nürburgring. Sadly his intention to restore 61651 after retiring did not happen due to his untimely death.

After being in the now vendors ownership the car was completely restored by German specialist Georg Thiele and a photographic documentation of the restoration is available in the cars file. This restoration included restoring the original space frame, front and rear axles, wheels, braking system and fitting of new shock absorbers, rebuilt engine with new pistons, polished con rods, new oil and water pumps (by Feierabend) and a 5 - speed gearbox is fitted with the original gearbox supplied. Fresh paint and seats trimmed in the traditional style finish the car.

Today 61651 presents itself in superb race and road ready condition. This car campaigned in many classic races, rallies and classic outings all over Europe within the last 10 years while in the ownership of its current custodian, himself a well known pre - and post war BMW collector and is in mint condition throughout. Needless to say that it is highly collectible, very rare and simply beautiful, certainly not to be missed.

Taking a break from the coastal brown bears, I reflected back on the many bald eagle sightings that we were afforded on this trip. This is a shot of one of the eagles that we woke up to one morning right outside of our campground on Homer Spit, affectionately referred to as the "spit" by locals.

Homer is a wonderful artist community on the Kenai Peninsula. I have previously posted shots from there, including the "spit" itself and views across Kachemak Bay. It is by far one of the most beautiful towns in Alaska and a personal favorite of mine. It was the home of the infamous "Eagly Lady" and the site of most of the magnificent bald eagles shots in North America.

After our Katmai NP adventure, we camped out on Homer Spit. Upon waking up, it was such a gorgeous day so I wanted to take a walk on the shore (aka our backyard), so off I went armed with nothing but my sunglasses. I quickly had to retreat for my ammunition - my Nikon D300 and a nice long lens to shoot with. Why? Because there sat a pair of bald eagles basking in the sunlight.

This one was perched up on this rock, just looking off in the distance, so beautiful. I began to approach it more closely (from an angle, not direct). Others saw what I was shooting and began to approach them head on. I started shooting immediately, figuring that they would vacate the area quickly, but to my surprise, that wasn't the case. Respectfully I began to get closer myself. Both eagles never altered their behavior. When I got as close as I wanted to, in other words to where I could still get the entire eagle in, I sat down in the sand and shot away.

The bald eagle is the eagle unique to North America and is our national bird. It thrives in Alaska, where it is estimated that over 1/2 of all bald eagles live.

We do get to see numerous bald eagles in Florida, but not usually from this close of a range.

What a wonderful treat to see and spend time with - in my "backyard", even if it's my backyard for just a few days.

Thanks so much for your views and comments to my photostream. Both are appreciated! There will be more bear shots coming, but not for the next few days.

Dinosaurier – Giganten Argentiniens

www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSYKzm96LfU&feature=player_em...

TRAMWAY BUILDING (Teatro Hotel)

1100 14th St.

National Register 1/5/1978, 5DV.140

The 1911 red brick office building and attached streetcar barn served as the headquarters of the city’s public transportation system until its purchase by the City of Denver in 1971. The prolific architectural firm of William E. and Arthur A. Fisher designed the three-part vertical block type structure with its striking white terra cotta accents. The property is associated with the Historic Resources of Downtown Denver Multiple Property Submission.

The Denver Tramway building was built in 1911 and held the city's public transportation system offices and attached street-car barn until 1971. The structure was designed by the firm of Fisher & Fisher and restored in the 1990s and is now home to the upscale Hotel Teatro.

The operation of Denver’s streetcar system impacted the business district in the first half of the twentieth century. Denver architects William E. and Arthur Fisher designed the 1912 Denver City Tramway Company’s corporate headquarters at1100 14th Street.

The Tramway Company, the major public transportation system of early twentieth century Denver, resulted from the consolidation of earlier street railway firms in 1899, and its route influenced the patterns of development of the city. The eight-story Renaissance Revival style red brick building with white terra-cotta trim had an attached three-story streetcar barn.

JEAN-BAPTISTE GODIN ( ENGLISH )

Jean-Baptiste André Godin (26 January 1817 -29 January 1888) was a French industrialist and social experimentor born on the 26th of January 1817 at Esquéhéries (Aisne).

The son of an artisan, he entered an iron-works at an early age, and at seventeen made a tour of France as journeyman. Returning to Esquéhéries in 1837, he started a small factory for the manufacture of castings for heating-stoves. The business increased rapidly, and for the purpose of railway facilities was transferred to Guise in 1846. At the time of Godin's death in 1888 the annual output was over four millions of francs (4,160,000), and in 1908 the employees numbered over 2000 and the output was over 280,000.

An ardent disciple of Charles Fourier, he advanced a considerable sum of money towards the disastrous Fourierist experiment of V. P. Considerant (q.v.) in Texas (known as La Reunion. He profited, however, by its failure, and in 1859 started the Familistère, or community settlement, of Guise on more carefully laid plans.

The Familistère forms a town within the town of Guise. It comprises, in addition to a large factory, three large buildings, each four stories high, capable of housing all the work-people, each family having two or three rooms. The main building consists of three rectangular blocks joined at the corners. Each of these blocks has a central court covered with a glass roof under which children can play in all weather. There is no church of any sort. (There are, of course, churches within the rest of Guise). At the back of the main block there was a nursery. There is a separate block, known as the "economat", containing various shops, refreshment rooms and recreation rooms of various kinds(?), stores for the purchase of groceries, drapery and every necessity. This has recently (2008) been restored and is now a cafe, a shop selling books, postcards etc and an exhibition area. There were also allotments for the workers.

Opposite the main block there was a building containing a theater for concerts and dramatic entertainments and a primary school. There was also a communal laundry and swimming pool. This was a few years ago derelict but has now been restored. The swimming pool is still a swimming poll but the laundry is a meeting room and the drying room is now (2008) an exhibition room. In 1880 the whole was turned into a co-operative society, with provision by which it eventually became the property of the workers.

Godin manufactured cookers and heating stoves of many kinds mainly made from cast iron castings. Sometimes these were enameled. These are still to be found in use all over France. They can be found for sale on eBay.

This business was still owned by the workers in the 1950s but soon after was taken over by Le Creuset. It is not obvious that the factory is still functioning. It is seems the domestic building were privatised. The state of the domestic buildings was deteriorating but has recently been awarded EU money for it to be restored.

In 1871 Godin was elected deputy for Aisne, but retired in 1876 to devote himself to the management of the Familistère. In 1882 he was created a Knight of the Legion of Honor.

Godin was the author of Solutions sociales (1871); Les Socialistes et les Droits du travail (1874); Mutualité sociale et association du capital et du travail (1880); La Republique du travail et la reforme parlementaire (1889).
