This is Jaguar's Hybrid Concept Car.

The car body is constructed from aluminium, and - at 4,445 mm (175.0 in) long, 2,048 mm (80.6 in) wide and 1,297 mm (51.1 in) high - is said by Jaguar to be the smallest car that they have made since the XK120 of 1954. The drivetrain comprises a hybrid unit, combining a 375 bhp (280 kW; 380 PS) 332 lb·ft (450 N·m) supercharged 3-litre V6 petrol engine with a 92 bhp (69 kW; 93 PS) 173 lb·ft (235 N·m) electric motor and an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.[1][2] The battery pack, which is mounted behind the front seats, is charged using a brake regeneration system. The car can run on engine alone, motor alone or on both in combination. Under engine power, the electric motor can also be activated to boost acceleration, in a similar way to the KERS system used in Formula 1 cars, by using a switch on the steering wheel.

The C-X16 form takes cues from Jaguar's 2010 C-X75 plug-in hybrid concept supercar, including the shape of the front grille and the wrap-around rear lights, and has a side-hinged opening rear window reminiscent of the 1961 E-Type.

Jaguar states the CX16 has a 0 - 60 mph (97 km/h) acceleration time of 4.4 seconds and a top speed limited to 186 mph (300 km/h). The CO2 rating is 165 g/km. Powered by the electric motor alone, the top speed is 50 mph (80 km/h).

According to Wikipedia:

Postman's Park is a small green memorial garden in the City of London. It is located between King Edward Street, Little Britain and Angel Street. It was created in 1880 from the churchyards of St Leonard, Foster Lane and St Botolph-without-Aldersgate together with the graveyard of Christ Church Greyfriars. St Leonard's had been a ruin since the Great Fire and was probably demolished at the time of the creation of the park. St Botolph's is still open and stands at the north east corner of the park. Christ Church was detached from its graveyard and is now a ruin on the other side of King Edward Street.

The park was the idea of the painter George Frederick Watts who wanted to celebrate people who may otherwise have been forgotten. Its name celebrates the postmen who work in the principal London post office and the former sorting office in King Edward Street.

A wall in the park has 34 hand-painted tiles paying tribute to everyday people who sacrificed their lives helping others. The hand-lettered tiles were made by Royal Doulton.

The park features in the film Closer - Natalie Portman's character takes her pseudonym 'Alice Ayres' from one of the painted tiles, as Jude Law's character discovers at the end of the film.

In many countries, Kilometre Zero (also written km 0) or similar terms in other languages, is a particular location (often in the nation's capital city), from which distances are traditionally measured. A similar notion also exists for individual roads (that is, all locations on the road have a number, depending on their distance from that location), and for individual cities (often the city's central post office is used for this).

The most famous such marker of which any part survives from ancient times is the Milliarium Aureum ("Golden Milestone") of the Roman Empire, believed to be the literal origin for the maxim that "all roads lead to Rome."

Spain has its Kilometre Zero in the centre of the Puerta del Sol in Madrid (incidentally, the clock of the old Royal House of the Post Office, in front of which the plaque is located, marks the official time in Spain, according to the urban legend). The plaque that marks this point was turned around 180 degrees in 2002, because the map of Spain depicted on it was upside-down in relation to reality.

CASTELLANO

Shot this scene in my backyard in Virginia a few days after a snowfall. I love this tree and can't wait for spring to see the change. I took a break from shoveling snow and grabbed the camera...just had too ! The low sky added a nice gray backdrop to the trees and the curve of the fence line across the top of the hill just adds to the shot.

U2- City of Blinding lights

The more you see the less you know

The less you find out as you go

I knew much more then than I do now

Neon heart day-glow eyes

A city lit by fireflies

They're advertising in the skies

For people like us

And I miss you when you're not around

I'm getting ready to leave the ground

Oh you look so beautiful tonight

In the city of blinding lights

Don't look before you laugh

Look ugly in a photograph

Flash bulbs purple irises

The camera can't see

I've seen you walk unafraid

I've seen you in the clothes you made

Can you see the beauty inside of me?

What happened to the beauty I had inside of me?

(cut)

And I miss you when you're not around

I'm getting ready to leave the ground

Oh you look so beautiful tonight

In the city of blinding lights

Time...time...time...time...time

Won't leave me as I am

But time won't take the boy out of this man

Oh you look so beautiful tonight

Oh you look so beautiful tonight

Oh you look so beautiful tonight

In the city of blinding lights

The more you know the less you feel

Some pray for others steal

Blessings are not just for the ones who kneel... luckily

An 18th century grotesque ‘Dinemonyo’ altar table

Manila

18th century

Wood

84 x 110 x 72 cm (33 x 43 x 28 ½ in)

Made of highly prized indigenous rosewood known as balayong (Afzelia rhomboidea), it has a reddish brown color that tends to darken even more with age, and has a natural luster. Very difficult to work with due to its durability and interlocking grain. The craftsmanship and condition of this table is comparable to similar tables kept in museums and top-notch private collections.

Called colloquially as dinemonyo table, it is one of the most elusive pieces of early Hispano-Filipino furniture, considered arguably as the pinnacle object to many serious furniture collectors and connoisseurs. An authentic example with original members, it is an extremely rare find.

The rectangular paneled top is enclosed by a frame with ice-plate edge to soften the edges and disguise its thickness. Below are two large drawers fitted with umbrella bosses, ornate protective key plates, and O-ring pulls. Reinforced by flanges and aprons with conforming billowing, cloud-like outlines that connect the demonyo masks on all four corners. These finely carved masks have raised fluted top hair, bulging eyes, prominent nose, mouth agape revealing some teeth and fangs, and scrolling facial hair. The cabriole legs show the delineations of a lion’s lower leg before terminating in deep, highly detailed ball and claw foot grasping a ball, resting on round-edged stretchers surmounted on ogee feet. Assembled using ancient Chinese mortise and tenon (closed and through types), as well as dovetail joints that have remained firm and strong.

Fall Out Boy - Golden

How cruel is the golden rule?

When the lives we lived are only golden-plated

And I knew that the lights of the city were too heavy for me

And though I carried karats for everyone to see

And I saw God cry in the reflection of my enemies

And all the lovers with no time for me

And all of the mothers raise their babies

To stay away from me

Tongues on the sockets of electric dreams

Where the sewage of youth drowned the spark of my teens

And I knew that the lights of the city were too heavy for me

(Too heavy for me)

And though I carried karats for everyone to see

(Everyone to see)

And I saw God cry in the reflection of my enemies

And all the lovers with no time for me

And of all the mothers raise their babies

To stay away from me

And pray they don't grow up to be me

___

Wooly Mammoth tusks are a relic from a world that disappeared around 11,500 years ago, when Wooly Mammoths and many other species of large animal went extinct. During their peak, the Mammoths lived in the far north of Europe, Asia and North America. They were the biggest animals around. Woolies continued to grow well into adult life: females until age 25, males until as late as 40. The males stood up to eleven feet tall at the shoulder and weighed around six tons. Female Woolies, noticeably smaller, were more lightly built, weighing up to 4 tons and standing 8 ½ to 9 ½ feet tall. Newborn babies weighed a whopping 200 pounds at birth!

Nearly all Mammoth tusks are found in the permafrost of the far north, with most from Siberia. Once extracted from the tundra, a Wooly Mammoth tusk needs almost a year of preparation before it is ready to be displayed. The preparation helps offset tens of thousands of years spent freeze drying in the tundra. Preparators, as they are known, slowly and carefully return moisture to the tusk and repair the small cracks that nearly always form in these fossils. Once completed the tusks are ready for display.

One of the most noteworthy fossil specimens available to customers of touchstone gallery are our exceptional examples of Wooly Mammoth tusks. These pieces make great natural art displays and are true conversation showpieces. The tusks of an adult male Wooly were typically around 8-9 feet long and weighed 90-100 pounds. On females, tusks were usually 5-6 feet long and weighed around 25 pounds. As in days of old, these mammoths dominate their space! This fine adult male mammoth tusk is just under eight feet long from tip to butt along the outside of the tusk, and weighs approximately 100 pounds.

For more information about this impressive fossil, please inquire by phone or email.

Where'd you go?

I miss you so,

Seems like it's been forever,

That you've been gone.

She said "Some days I feel like shit,

Some days I wanna quit, and just be normal for a bit,"

I don't understand why you have to always be gone,

I get along but the trips always feel so long,

And, I find myself trying to stay by the phone,

'Cause your voice always helps me to not feel so alone,

But I feel like an idiot, workin' my day around the call,

But when I pick up I don't have much to say,

So, I want you to know it's a little fucked up,

That I'm stuck here waitin', at times debatin',

Tellin' you that I've had it with you and your career,

Me and the rest of the family here singing "Where'd you go?"

I miss you so,

Seems like it's been forever,

That you've been gone.

Where'd you go?

I miss you so,

Seems like it's been forever,

That you've been gone,

Please come back home...

You know the place where you used to live,

Used to barbecue up burgers and ribs,

Used to have a little party every Halloween with candy by the pile,

But now, you only stop by every once and a while,

Shit, I find myself just fillin' my time,

With anything to keep the thought of you from my mind,

I'm doin' fine, I plan to keep it that way,

You can call me if you find that you have something to say,

And I'll tell you, I want you to know it's a little fucked up,

That I'm stuck here waitin', at times debatin',

Tellin' you that I've had it with you and your career,

Me and the rest of the family here singing "Where'd you go?"

I miss you so,

Seems like it's been forever,

That you've been gone,

Please come back home...

I want you to know it's a little fucked up,

That I'm stuck here waitin', no longer debatin',

Tired of sittin' and hatin' and makin' these excuses,

For why you're not around, and feeling so useless,

It seems one thing has been true all along,

You don't really know what you've got 'til it's gone,

I guess I've had it with you and your career,

When you come back I won't be here and you can sing it...

Where'd you go?

I miss you so,

Seems like it's been forever,

That you've been gone.

I miss you so,

Llanthony Priory is a partly ruined former Augustinian priory in the secluded Vale of Ewyas, a steep sided once glaciated valley within the Black Mountains area of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Monmouthshire, south east Wales. It lies seven miles north of Abergavenny on an old road to Hay on Wye at Llanthony.

The priory dates back to around the year 1100, when Norman nobleman William de Lacy reputedly came upon a ruined chapel of St. David in this location, and was inspired to devote himself to solitary prayer and study. He was joined by Ersinius, a former Chaplain to Queen Matilda, the wife of King Henry I, and then a band of followers. A church was built on the site, dedicated to St John the Baptist, and consecrated in 1108. By 1118, a group of around 40 monks from England founded there an Augustinian priory, the first in Wales.

In 1135, after persistent attacks from the local Welsh population, the monks retreated to Gloucester where they founded a daughter cell, Llanthony Secunda. However, around 1186 another member of the de Lacy family, Hugh the fifth baron, endowed the estate with funds from his Irish estates to rebuild the priory church, and this work was completed by 1217.

The Priory became one of the great medieval buildings in Wales, in a mixture of Norman and Gothic architectural styles. Renewed building took place around 1325, with a new gatehouse. On Palm Sunday, April 4th 1327, the deposed Edward II stayed at the Priory on his way from Kenilworth Castle to Berkeley Castle, where he is alleged to have been murdered.

Following Owain Glyndŵr's rebellion in the early fifteenth century, the Priory seems to have been barely functioning. In 1481 it was formally merged with its daughter cell in Gloucester, and after 1538 both houses were suppressed by Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Marching along Park lane next to Hyde Park, London, the Grand Lodge of England Bicentennial Parade. Certainly worth watching if you happened to pass by as I did on my way to a picnic!

After searching the web (the press seem to have ignored this march) this is what I found: To mark the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the Grand Orange Lodge of England there will be a parade through the streets of our nations capital city on Saturday 9th June 2007.

This particular section of the parade featured the Ulster Special Constabulary which was a reserve force of the Royal Ulster Constabulary.

Relaxing has never been so good!

Day 107/365

Do you hear me,

I'm talking to you

Across the water across the deep blue ocean

Under the open sky, oh my, baby I'm trying

Boy I hear you in my dreams

I feel your whisper across the sea

I keep you with me in my heart

You make it easier when life gets hard

I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend

Lucky to have been where I have been

Lucky to be coming home again

Ooohh ooooh oooh oooh ooh ooh ooh ooh

They don't know how long it takes

Waiting for a love like this

Every time we say goodbye

I wish we had one more kiss

I'll wait for you I promise you, I will

I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend

Lucky to have been where I have been

Lucky to be coming home again

Lucky we're in love every way

Lucky to have stayed where we have stayed

Lucky to be coming home someday

And so I'm sailing through the sea

To an island where we'll meet

You'll hear the music fill the air

I'll put a flower in your hair

Though the breezes through trees

Move so pretty you're all I see

As the world keeps spinning round

You hold me right here right now

I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend

Lucky to have been where I have been

Lucky to be coming home again

I'm lucky we're in love every way

Lucky to have stayed where we have stayed

Lucky to be coming home someday

Today I was with family for an early easter get-together/late birthday gift giving because my grandfather, aunt and I are the only ones that have birthdays at the beginning of the year and that always gets messed up. Nearly EVERYONE else's birthdays are around september, which used to make me sad as a kid because I would never get my gifts around the same time as everyone else, and I basically had to sit around when all of my cousins were getting things and be polite and shut my mouth. xD I don't mind it anymore at all (but i was a kid and i was a pouty little thing sometimes, haha!). I got more money for crafty stuff. Yay! Thank you Aunt Jane. =D

So anyway, off with that rambling. My step-grandmother took us to her "southern mansion" (as she calls it; it's more like an antique store gone wrong) to show us her reupholstering jobs. The outside is fabulous, though i totally spaced taking a decent picture. So the next few pictures will be from this place, along with the songs that have plagued me throughout the course of the day. xD

So! I found this little beauty (the necklace) on one of the walls in the place. AND I WAS ALLOWED TO KEEP IT. YAYYYY.

This one just happens to remind me of my lovely. =o

I was out of your league

And you were 20,000 underneath the sea

Waiving affections

You were out of my league

At a distance that I didn't wanna see

Down to the bottom

I wanted a junction and often there was one

You'd surface face first and we'd share our thought bubbles

And I still believe in the phrases that we breathed

But I know the distance isn't fair to cross

I was out of your league

And you were 20,000 underneath the sea

Waiving affections

You were out of my league

At a distance that I didn't wanna see

Wanted you nearer

Your depths made a pressure that punctured my works and all your fluids couldn't tolerate the force of my thirst

I love the place where we shared our tiny grace

But because it's real doesn't mean it's gonna work

I was out of your league

And you were 20,000 underneath the sea

Waiving affections

You were out of my league

At a distance that I didn't wanna see

Wanted you nearer

And true affection floats

True affections sinks like a stone

I never felt so close

I never felt so all alone

I was out of your league

And you were 20,000 underneath the sea

Waiving affections

You were out of my league

At a distance that I didn't wanna see

Wanted you nearer...

This six-story, 135,000-square-foot building was originally constructed by the P. H. Hanes Company in 1920 for textile manufacturing and housed the company's operations until 1951. One of the most architecturally refined industrial buildings in Winston-Salem, the building displays Beaux-Arts style details unusual among the City's industrial architecture. The building was subsequently used by the Brown-Rogers-Dixon Company for warehousing and distribution and acquired by Clachan Properties, LLC in 2006. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated by the City as a Historic Landmark. [WFL website]

text.npr.org/s.php?sId=485228299 These quiosques de refrescos (refreshment kiosks) were the heart of public life in the city. But, under the long dictatorship of Prime Minister António de Oliveira Salazar, which started in the 1930s, laws discouraged public gathering and conversation. Many restaurants closed down and the kiosks fell into disrepair and all but disappeared. That was, until Catarina Portas, a native of Lisbon, former journalist and entrepreneur stepped in.

"From the 19th to the 20th century, there were some hundred different kiosks in Lisbon. The city was full of them in different colors, different designs," says Portas. She used to take walks around the city and see these "sad, abandoned structures," she says. "I started to think, How could we bring this to our times?"

So Portas began hunting down these kiosks — some still in place but boarded up or neglected, others in storage. She teamed up with architect João Regal to restore the buildings – not just to their former glory, but to their former place of prominence in Lisbon's public spaces.

"We went to the city council with amazing photographs of the old kiosks, and we prepared all the old drinks and made them taste the drinks," Portas says. The pitch worked ---- Portas is fairly sure it was the drinks that convinced the council members. Their first three kiosks opened in 2009.

The kiosks offer affordable and traditional drinks and snacks, conversation and community – and also employment in a country struggling with the staggering levels of unemployment and recession gripping much of western Europe.

A house in Brougham with the forgotten spirits/ memories that are being lost

Green River and Brougham are two towns a couple miles apart where I grew up. The land was expropriated several decades ago to build a new Toronto International Airport. The original owners were forced out for progress that did not happen and the house and properties were rented by the Federal Government to people like my mother. 30+ years later, with renewed interest in the airport, renters are being systematically forced out and farms and houses bulldozed, in preparation for the Airport. The loss of hundreds of years of culture and some of the finest most pristine nature, farm land and trout streams left in Southern Ontario is sad and tragic…we are watching our past be leveled.

Another man evicted in Brougham

by darinotte @ 24 Feb. 2008 - 12:12:17 pm

Residents have had enough with saying goodbye to long-time friends

Tue Jan 29, 2008

PICKERING -- Protestors, politicians and concerned residents marched along the streets of Brougham on Monday, carrying a casket not to mourn a death, but the loss of hopes and dreams of a longtime resident.

It was the day Mike Puterbough, who moved into his Brougham home in 1974, was evicted. The 59-year-old has been fighting Transport Canada in a court battle for the past three years, and said he was finally told to go because his home wasn’t worth fixing.

“I’ve been very angry but today I just feel complete sadness,” Mr. Puterbough said.

The federal government expropriated 7,500 hectares of farmland in 1972, but has still given no final word on whether an airport will be built or not on the land. In the meantime, the community has been slowly diminishing, and residents in north Pickering have been fighting evictions and demolitions of homes.

The local anti-airport group Land Over Landings began as People or Plains, of which Michael Robertson was a founding member. He spoke of his disgust at the protest.

“We’re here witnessing what, for a normal landlord, was an illegal act,” he said to approximately 50 supporters. “A winter eviction, after 33 years, and with a heart condition, Mike is literally put out in the cold. This is clearly over the edge of common decency, if not the law.”

Mr. Robertson added the fight isn’t over.

Mr. Puterbough will move in with family in Uxbridge for the time being, but isn’t sure where he’ll go after that.

This weekend I viewed an hour long documentary regarding the history of the proposed Pickering airport. I was inspired by the fact that back in the 70's, hippy farmers were able to stick it to the man & stop the airport development. The fight continues to this; here are some related links:

ENGLISH

The Black Swan, Cygnus atratus is a large waterbird which breeds mainly in the southeast and southwest regions of Australia. The Black Swan was formerly placed into a monotypic genus, Chenopis.

‘Swan’ is the common gender term, but ‘cob’ for a male and ‘pen’ for a female are also used, as is ‘cygnet’ for the young. Collective nouns include a ‘bank’ (on the ground) and a ‘wedge’ (in flight). Black Swans can be found singly, or in loose companies numbering into the hundreds or even thousands.

The Black Swan is common in the wetlands of south western and eastern Australia and adjacent coastal islands. In the south west the range ecompasses an area between North West Cape, Cape Leeuwin and Eucla; while in the east it covers are large region bounded by the Atherton Tableland, the Eyre Peninsula and Tasmania, with the Murray Darling Basin supporting very large populations of Black Swans.

The Black Swan is also very popular as an ornamental waterbird in Western Europe, especially Britain, and escapes are commonly reported. As yet the population in Britain is not considered to be self-sustaining and so the species is not afforded admission to the official British List, but the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust have recorded a maximum of nine breeding pairs in the UK in 2001, with an estimate of 43 feral birds in 2003/04 (though that is undoubtedly an under-estimate given the level of monitoring undertaken).

The black swan was a literary or artistic image, even before the discovery of Cygnus atratus. Cultural reference has been based on symbolic contrast and as a distinctive motif. The Black Swan's role in Australian heraldry and culture extends to the first founding of the colonies in the eighteenth century. It has often been equated with antipodean identity, the contrast to the white swan of the northern hemisphere indicating 'Australianess'. The black swan is featured on the flag, and is both the state and bird emblem, of Western Australia; it also appears in the Coat of Arms and other iconography of the state's institutions.

The reclaimed wetlands of the river Foix estuary have made this area into one of the main attractions of the town. The River Foix, which is dry during most of the year due to construction of the Foix Resservoir is another of the most emblematic places in Cubelles. At the Foix estuary, you can spend the day enjoying nature and birthwatching, or at one of the picnic areas. This zone is also intended for school visits, as it is a place where children can study the ecosystem of a Mediterranean river such as the Foix.

The estuary is separated from the sea by a sand barrier which has accumulated over time, due to sea currents and rainwater sediments, forming freshwater laguens behind the barrier. The natural area of the Foix Delta has a branch of land that sticks out into the sea. This was formed during the floods of 1994 and joins onto another branch, leaving an island in the middle. Tourists can visit the island by crossing a wooden footbridge.

CASTELLANO

The city of Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area, was mostly destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

Researchers believe that the town was founded in the seventh or sixth century BC and was captured by the Romans in 80 BC. By the time of its destruction, 160 years later, its population was probably approximately 20,000, with a complex water system, an amphitheatre, gymnasium and a port. Source: en.wikipedia.org
