Here's another version of the PHP (for Prvi Hrvatski Pistolj - First Croatian Pistol), the MV-9, made in the early 1990's in Croatia. The MV's are often described as a love child of a Walther P38 and a Beretta 92, as it has features of both. The barrel locking system is the tilting wedge with a "push button" used by both the Beretta and the Walther. It has the Walther's exposed barrel and the Beretta's high capacity magazine. The MV-9 seen here is somewhat shorter than the MV-17, as the muzzle is almost flush with the front of the slide.
In spite of the fact that it's a first attempt and that there was a particularly nasty war going on at the time, the pistol is fairly well made. It has the checkerboard Croatian crest stamped on the top of the slide, just behind the exposed portion of the barrel.
This one shows some use as evidenced by dings, scratches and honest wear, compared to the MV17, which came to me in nearly pristine, unissued condition.
The MV pistols were made by the arsenal which later became HS Arms, manufacturer of the HS2000, sold in the U. S. as the Springfield Armory XD series.

The Londonderry & Lough Swilly’s Railway 49 mile Burtonport extension from Letterkenny was built to serve the excellent harbour in Burtonport and as a government attempt to alleviate the poverty in north Donegal. Opening for traffic in 1909, the line ran through the remote and difficult terrain of north Donegal often skirting towns it was meant to serve by miles in a effort to save on the cost of construction. The line was the subject of two enquiries over its safety and operation. The Derry Chamber of Commerce noting “defective construction and inadequate and unsuitable equipment” as a cause of the lines many ills. Despite this the line managed to survive until 1947, the Burtonport - Gweedore section earlier closing in June 1940. The station was demolished early in 2003.

We are visiting a spirit house or a tambaran in the small village Yessan.
The Tambaran Culture
The male-dominated tambaran or tambaran culture uses the haus tambaran as a meeting-house and site for rituals and initiations. It is also used in worship for the yam cult, the yam being the staple food for the Sepik people. The women serve primarily as preparers of feasts, outsiders, and spectators. The giant spirit Nggwal is personified as noises that can be heard coming from the haus tambaran. Nggwal is the primary ancestor deity, though other cultural heroes are also often depicted in cultural and sacred arts. Ngwalndu are large, flat painted faces that line the inside of the structure. Though they are said to be representations of ancestral spirits, they can also be seen as stylized women's bodies. However, it is important to note that painting is a sacred activity for the Sepik people, and the paintings of the Sepik people are taken very seriously.

In Yessan bezoeken we een geestenhuis of een tambaran. Daar verblijven overdag alleen mannen. Daar worden ook veel besprekingen gehouden. De tambarans zijn helemaal gesculpteerd en geverfd. Ze zijn een eerbetoon aan de voorouders.

The original article for this image lives at www.dannychoo.com/post/en/25659/Worldwide+Workspaces.html
This is a detail (re-arranged by me) of the original by Chicago artist, John Bakker, in a solo exhibition of his recent work (in the Hansen Gallery, Wheaton College, Illinois, Feb-March 2010), that invites audience engagement, and, if desired, re-arrangement, and thus reinterpretation.
Bakker, discovering that he is only the first interpreter of his own work, has thus taken a further step than is normative, by intentionally inviting his audience to engage with, and, if desired, re-arrange, and thus reinterpret his work.

The work, of which this is a detail, is itself based on Albrecht Durer's 1525 woodcut of a man demonstrating one means of perspective drawing, of a recumbent nude woman, as seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/59118828@N00/4373770841/

The focus locked on nicely for this one. Unfortunately, the chosen aperture meant that the background is not blurry enough and I really find those leaves distracting. I'm still on that learning curve!
The warthog or common warthog (Phacochoerus africanus, "African Lens-Pig") is a wild member of the pig family that lives in Africa. The common name comes from the four large wart-like protrusions found on the head of the warthog, which serve the purpose of defense when males fight. They are the only widely recognised species in their genus, though some authors divide them into two species. On that classification, P. africanus is the common (or northern) warthog and P. aethiopicus is the desert warthog, also known as the Cape or Somali warthog.
The male is called a boar, the female a sow, and the young piglets. A group is called a sounder. Warthogs are fast runners and quite capable jumpers. They will often run with their tails in the air. Despite poor eyesight, warthogs have a good sense of smell, which they use for locating food, detecting predators and recognizing other animals. Although capable of fighting, and males will aggressively fight each other during mating season, a primary defense is to flee by means of fast sprinting. The main warthog predators are humans, lions, leopards, crocodiles, and hyenas. Cheetahs are also capable of catching small warthogs. Warthogs have been observed allowing banded mongooses to groom them to remove ticks.
In this piece I wanted to concentrate on the period performer and remove all the 21st century details from the shot so they wouldn't distract from the period look. Was aiming at a Victorian oil painting look for this one. I moved the flag over as I wanted to keep the union jack in the shot, and also masked the playset in the background by cutting and pasting in an extra shrub.
I may come back to this one. The performer is looking at something and I'm tempted to put something there, as well as spruce up the area, perhaps putting in a traditional English garden (roses, foxgloves, etc.).
In reality I think the performer was looking at me out of the corner of her eye. I'm certain she noticed me when I turned and raised the camera as she stopped and held pose as I took these shots. I have such a big lens it's hard to miss, don't ya know. ;-) I wanted to ask her to pose for a few more shots, but I'm kind of shy and have to build up my nerve about these things, so first I went down the side of the mill to get some side shots of the building. I arrived late to Dickinson Days so unfortunately by the time I got back she'd left for the day! Oh well, perhaps next year.
In the meantime I'm thinking I'll contact Watson's Mill about these shots so the performers can see them and get copies. Everyone there was very friendly and professional, as you can see here. Would love to give them something back for their volunteering to work the festival.

Chichen Itza (pronounced /tʃiːˈtʃɛn iːˈtsɑː/; from Yucatec Maya: Chi'ch'èen Ìitsha', "At the mouth of the well of the Itza") is a large pre-Columbian archaeological site built by the Maya civilization located in the northern center of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the Yucatán state, present-day Mexico.
Chichen Itza was a major regional focal point in the northern Maya lowlands from the Late Classic through the Terminal Classic and into the early portion of the Early Postclassic period. The site exhibits a multitude of architectural styles, from what is called “Mexicanized” and reminiscent of styles seen in central Mexico to the Puuc style found among the Puuc Maya of the northern lowlands. The presence of central Mexican styles was once thought to have been representative of direct migration or even conquest from central Mexico, but most contemporary interpretations view the presence of these non-Maya styles more as the result of cultural diffusion.
The ruins of Chichen Itza are federal property, and the site’s stewardship is maintained by Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (National Institute of Anthropology and History, INAH). The land under the monuments, however, is privately-owned by the Barbachano family.
The Maya name "Chich'en Itza" means "At the mouth of the well of the Itza." This derives from chi', meaning "mouth" or "edge", and ch'e'en, meaning "well." Itzá is the name of an ethnic-lineage group that gained political and economic dominance of the northern peninsula. The name is believed to derive from the Maya itz, meaning "magic," and (h)á, meaning "water." Itzá in Spanish is often translated as "Brujas del Agua (Witches of Water)" but a more precise translation would be Magicians of Water.
The name is often represented as Chichén Itzá in Spanish and when translated into other languages from Spanish to show that both parts of the name are stressed on their final syllables. Other references prefer to employ a more rigorous orthography in which the word is written according to Maya language, using Chich'en Itzá (pronounced [tʃitʃʼen itsáʔ]. This form preserves the phonemic distinction between ch' and ch, since the base word ch'e'en (which, however, does have a neutral tone vowel "e" in Maya and is not accented or stressed in Maya) begins with a glottalized affricate. The word "Itzá'" has a high rise final "a" that is followed by a glottal stop (indicated by the apostrophe).
There is evidence in the Chilam Balam books that there was another, earlier name for this city prior to the arrival of the Itza hegemony in northern Yucatán. This name is difficult to define because of the absence of a single standard of orthography, but it is represented variously as Uuc Yabnal, Uuc Hab Nal, or Uc Abnal. While most sources agree the first word means seven, there is considerable debate as to the correct translation of the rest. Among the translations suggested are “Seven Bushes,” “Seven Great Houses,” or “Seven Lines of Abnal.”

Eldridge Pope was a traditional brewery situated in Dorchester, Dorset in England. The brewery opened in 1881. Royal Oak and Hardy's were amongst the beers brewed there. Following a
series of calamatous business decisions, the brewery closed in July 2003. The company's best-known brands are now brewed under licence by Dorset and Devon-based micro-breweries.
'Royal Oak' and 'Hardy's Ale' were two of the real ales brewed by Denis Edwin Holliday, Head Brewer of Eldridge Pope throughout the 1960s and 70s. He also has an entry in the Guinness Book of Records for brewing the strongest commercially brewed beer, 1978.
The new town quarter, to be known as Brewery Square, includes 30 buildings; new restaurants, bars, 40 shops, a three screen cinema and a replacement solar-powered railway station (the first in the country) at Dorchester South. A new four star, 48 bed, Conran designed hotel, will be created from the conversion of the listed Brewhouse, originally designed by Crickmay & Sons. Crickmay was the architect who employed Thomas Hardy until 1872, when he became a full time writer. The scheme also includes c. 650 new apartments and 22 houses. The architects are CZWG for most of the new buildings and Conran & Partners for all the conversion buildings and two new buildings. It is one of the largest regeneration projects in the South West, with over 72,000 sq.m. (770,000 sq ft.) of development on the 11.5-acre (47,000 m²) site situated between the main shopping area on South Street, the market and the Dorchester South Station.
The Maltings, one of the original 1880s listed buildings, is, subject to funding, to become a new arts centre for Dorchester. It would replace the existing and cramped premises on School Lane. Oliver Letwin MP, initiated the demolition of the 20th century industrial buildings in early 2006. Construction work on Phase 1, the conversion of the Italianate 1880's Eldridge Pope Offices, started on site in August 2007 and is due for completion in August 2008. The Sales & Marketing Suite for the development is due to open in April 2008. In June 2007 the Environment Agency granted a license to enable enough water for the scheme to be abstracted so that all the buildings will self sufficient in water from its own well; the same one used by the Brewery since 1880.
The developers are Brewery Square Ltd., a Waterhouse company, controlled by Andrew Wadsworth and Robert Ackland.

Joseph-Michel Montgolfier (26 August 1740 – 26 June 1810) and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier (6 January 1745 – 2 August 1799) were the inventors of the montgolfière-style hot air balloon, globe aérostatique. The brothers succeeded in launching the first manned ascent, carrying Étienne into the sky. Later, in December 1783, in recognition of their achievement, their father Pierre was elevated to the nobility and the hereditary appellation of de Montgolfier by King Louis XVI of France.
The Manali-Leh highway
One of the highest and most rugged highways in the world, the journey on the Manali - Leh highway is one that leaves the traveller gasping for breath on all accounts...dream like landscapes taking your breath away at almost every turn and sheer breathlessness from the lack of oxygen as you cross some of the highest roads and mountain passes in the world.
It connects the Manali valley to Kullu valley, Lahaul and Spiti and Ladakh and is open only between June and mid-September when snow is cleared from the road. Prominent passes that one crosses include Rohtang La (3,978m), Baralacha La (5,045m), Lachulung La (5,059m) and Tanglang La (5,325m). Between Lachlung La and Taglang La the road crosses the More plains, a vast desert like expanse at an altitude in excess of 4,500mts.
The journey along the road normally takes two days and many travellers make overnight stops at Jispa and tented camps such as Sarchu. Alternately, overnight stops can be made at Keylong. Owing to the high altitudes and the low-oxygen air, many travelers experience breathlessness, headaches and nausea or in some cases even acute mountain sickness.
The highway was designed, built, constructed and is maintained in its entirety by the Indian Army and is capable of supporting the heaviest of their vehicles. This journey is often referred to as the ultimate challenge for riding and off-roading enthusiansts and attracts bikers from all over the world.
Wasted and wounded, it aint what the moon did, Ive got what I paid for now
See you tomorrow, hey frank, can I borrow a couple of bucks from you
To go waltzing mathilda, waltzing mathilda,
You'll go waltzing mathilda with me
Im an innocent victim of a blinded alley
And Im tired of all these soldiers here
No one speaks english, and everythings broken, and my stacys are soaking wet
To go waltzing mathilda, waltzing mathilda,
You'll go waltzing mathilda with me
Now the dogs are barking and the taxi cabs parking
A lot they can do for me
I begged you to stab me, you tore my shirt open,
And I'm down on my knees tonight
Old bushmills I staggered, you'd bury the dagger
In your silhouette window light go
To go waltzing mathilda, waltzing mathilda,
You'll go waltzing mathilda with me
Now I lost my saint christopher now that I've kissed her
And the one-armed bandit knows
And the maverick chinamen, and the cold-blooded signs,
And the girls down by the strip-tease shows, go
Waltzing mathilda, waltzing mathilda,
Youll go waltzing mathilda with me
No, I don't want your sympathy, the fugitives say
That the streets aren't for dreaming now
And manslaughter dragnets and the ghosts that sell memories,
They want a piece of the action anyhow
Go waltzing mathilda, waltzing mathilda,
You'll go waltzing mathilda with me
And you can ask any sailor, and the keys from the jailor,
And the old men in wheelchairs know
And mathilda is the defendant, she has killed about a hundred,
And she follows wherever you may go
Waltzing mathilda, waltzing mathilda,
You'll go waltzing mathilda with me
And its a battered old suitcase to a hotel someplace,
And a wound that will never heal
No prima donna, the perfume is on an
Old shirt that is stained with blood and whiskey
And goodnight to the street sweepers, the night watchmen flame keepers
And goodnight to mathilda, too

Claro, mientras tanto
hay oraciones, hay pétalos, hay ríos,
hay la ternura como un viento húmedo.
Sólo mientras tanto.

She has no colors, but only the "ridicule"colours black grey, grey, silver grey. This is related to the history of the IGEL (hedgehog) , which was founded as a connection, to make other connections with their rituals and colours in the ridiculous. Since the Eagle has no correct colors, and also wants to express this remoteness by a normal connection, no flag in its colors, but always the flag of the highest political order blowing on his roof mast (until the 1990s the German flag, since about 1995 the European flag). Military Base in Germany somewhere.
This is my second ever Urbex hotel; sleeping at an abandoned location…
We arrived here by car in the middle of the night and set up camp on the terrace of one of these buildings. It wasn’t very cold so all we had to lay out were sleeping bags and we could sleep underneath the moonlit sky.
Before we went to sleep we walked around the area and in the middle of some bushes we saw this giant statue of Lenin which had red sprayed eyes, thus quite the evil look…. We heard these slammin’ doors we thought, a loud bang once every half an hour or so. But it wasn’t that windy… This freaked us out a little. We never really found out what that sound was, but we don’t think it could have been the wind.
The next morning we woke up by the rising sun, that was really nice. This was also the very first morning of our 4 day weekend trip in Germany. Starting it off with a sunny day, well you just can’t wish for anything better.
We had some coffee and started looking around and taking pictures. Then at some point one of us bumped into a security guard doing his round. We sent some text (seen as all four of us had spread out over the area), met back at our little base, packed up and made ready for the final exit sprint! The last 20 meters we had a car behind us trying to chase us out. But we managed to climb the fence in time, jump into the car and drive away…. Phew
Months later I had a nightmare about this night. We got caught on the terrain and were wearing bulletproof vsts. Then we escaped and we were chased out of this military base by an army tank. Mad scary!

Excellent! Very rich! I'm new to vegan baking but not cooking.
I used Sugar in the Raw Turbinado sugar, unsweetened Walmart brand applesauce, packed Trader Joe's organic brown sugar, earth balance original (wanted to do the soy-free but Walmart was out), and Trader Joe's semi-chocolate chips. I cooked them on parchment paper and moved the parchment paper and cookies to a cooling rack after taking from the oven.
The usual non-vegan cookie recipe I usually use is Toll house. I usually sub out butter with butter-flavored crisco for a soft cookie. When I would use butter, it would spread and be crispier. So that's where I come from.
I followed exactly as written and took them out at 10 minutes. I like a soft cookie. They hardened up with cooling. The color is darker than the usual non-vegan version but that's probably because the raw sugar is dark. And there's a gritty sugary texture because of the turbinado. Also, it's crispier on the edges. I'm guessing the crispier on the edges because of Earth Balance. I'd like to try with a finer vegan white sugar but it seems turbinado is good for holding moisture. I've had vegan cookies that crumble like a fiend so would rather not have crumble cookie syndrome and switching might do that.
I've got them in the fridge now so will be very curious how well they do with storage.
Served with almond milk. Only non-dairy milk that I've found I can drink straight.

The title on the Russian site devoted to SPG is – Rafts on the [Catherine] Canal: city of Shlisselburg.
A little poking around on the internet reveals that this is unlikely to be the Catherine canal (which runs between the Volkhov and Syas rivers, says Wikipedia), and is more likely the Peter Canal, that is the section built during the time of Peter the Great. That section of the canal had two locks, one of which we can see in the background, along with boats waiting to enter. You can find this locale on Google Earth, in "street view," much changed of course, where the Russian label tells us it is part of the Marinskii waterway, which is true, but only in a general sense. You can see on Google Earth too, that, over the years, the canal has silted up and filled in, and in places has actually been narrowed by builders needed good footings for their constructions. Another page I found said that the stonework we see on the locks and banks dates from the time of the canal's original construction (late 1720s) another that it dates from repairs and renovations done in 1836; the Wikipedia article doesn't note any work done in the 1830s, so my guess is that this stonework – which still endures, and looks to be in pretty good shape – is the same built by battalions of Peter's soldiers in the eighteenth century.
Note, in the right background, two huge stacks of logs, as high as the buildings next to them, and just as long, a truly immense stockpile. I wonder whether the logs in the foreground are about to join one of those huge piles (likely) or whether they have been taken from the piles (less likely). My guess would be that they are piled up there until they can be loaded on a transport and taken to a mill that is closer to a larger population centre, but that is speculation on my part.
This was a difficult shot to register because the logs moved around on the water as SPG took his three shots. People in the background moved; boats lining up to get into the lock moved; and one of the two fellows in the foreground took a quick look around to see if SPG was finished yet. So I had to do a lot of piece by piece compositing of sections of the shot to get everything to more or less line up. Lots of figures in the middle distance and in the faraway existed only as coloured blobs on one plate or another, so in several cases, I simply erased those partial figures from the shot. A red colour cast at the bottom of the shot proved more problematic, but I have reduced it as much as I can.
Update, 2014: I've gone over the shot one more time, trying to reduce the purple tones, to adjust the contrast on the logs, and reduce some of the fringing on the cloud images reflected in the water. I think, for now, this is the best I can do.
Update, 2024: Another revision, courtesy of Photoshop's updated tools, particularly using the Camera Raw filter.

The "Via dell'Amore" (Pathway of Love) is a pathway linking Riomaggiore to Manarola and is probably one of the most famous and renowned touristic routes of "Le Cinque Terre". There's a very impressive panoramic view on the cliffs. At the end of the path, it is covered with a gallery of arches, wihich is an art gallery indeed, all covered with paintings and murales (freely made by tourists).

Walking around the beach after sunset, between the crumbling cliffs, hemmed in by the tide I was looking for one last photo before I headed back up the wooded valley away from the coast. I noticed these three pebbles grouped together at the edge of the limestone pavement with the fresh water stream that runs down through the valley and across the beach to the sea flowing over them. The late evening soft pink glow of the sky made the rock below seem to glow itself and the round stones and blurred water seemed to me the perfect compliment to the soft light.
I would have liked to have spotted this scene earlier while the sun was still above the horizon and it's light was caught in the water making every drop sparkle. Although I'm not certain that this lighting would have suited the scene so well it would have been nice to compare and contrast the two lighting conditions. Maybe next time, although these pebbles will surely be long gone by then.

Second Life holiday parties was an incredible mix of trance, dnb, electronica, dark psy, goa, minimal, proggy, acid, experimental, industrial, noize, tribal, jazz, live music, country, blues, reggae, salsa, classical, opera, and Christmas music. I heard it all and then some.
I love music of all kinds. If it's good, it's worth listening to, so don't start with the nose-up-in-the-air over your favorite genre. Believe me... good music will always find an audience. An audience of sophisticated listeners will stop to listen to any good sound... even if it isn't part of your normal repertoire.
What is amazing is that dj's and musicians around the world know this, and they borrow from all genres to create their own personal sounds.
Here in Second Life, we get the results from around the world. World music mixes with the trendy sounds of the day, and we get the sounds that we love so much.
I want to thank all the dj's, musicians, club owners and event makers in SL. You guys made a holiday scene like no other. APPLAUSE & BRAVO ::::
Special thanks to you <3:

2009... here we goooooo!
~~~I have all the characteristics of a Human Being : blood, flesh, skin, hair; but not a single, clear, identifiable emotion, except for greed and disgust. Something horrible is happening inside of me and I don't know why. My nightly bloodlust has overflown into my days. I feel lethal, on the verge of frenzy. I think my mask of sanity is about to slip
~ There is an idea of myself, some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me, only an entity, something illusory, and although I can hide my cold gaze and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping you,and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable: I simply am not there.~~~
this Week has been one of dwelling on the past alot. so many things have
sprung up in my memory and distracted me from the present.
many good memories with wonderful people, but somehow this has
brought me to feeling weighed down by the passing of time.
How often in our lives, when good times surround us, do we really
appreciate them for what they are?
It always seems to be looking back on special memories that makes us ache
to have them again, altho at the time we were simply Content.
Some time in the last couple weeks i have found myself concerned
about something i haven't before. Comments and views. how ridiculous,right?
I don't do this for peoples praise,and i honestly dont want people to
give me anything than their blunt personal opinion.. . but i have felt a little more
needy as of late. a trait i dont normally have,and i certainly do NOT like.
and since i have now recognized this, and don't like it...
i have rewired my brain to go back to where it was.
And, a day later (today) ... the Lovely and talented BITCA put This Up , and
completely was the highlight of my day.
I have never been one to take
compliments well, and i dont deal well with being the center of attention,
But her words and her thoughts warmed me. So thanks Lady :P you are too kind.
When I first began to study photography in school, I had already been studying cinematography and film, so the leap from moving to still images was very fluid for me, but the vision of the cinematographer remained, as I would try to compose each image as if it were stolen from a movie - a frame of a story, frozen in time.
cindy sherman was my muse - I emulated her photographic style and in doing so, forged my own. I hope to meet her one day, and thank her for changing the trajectory of my life.
