Cherating is a beach town in Pahang, Malaysia, located about 47 km north of Kuantan. It is the location of Asia’s first Club Mediterranee ("Club Med").
Cherating also houses a cultural village and a turtle sanctuary. The turtles lay their eggs between July and August.
The most well known wave in Malaysia and the epicentre for Malaysian surfing. A left point break that peels over a very long sand bar into Cherating beach. The potential here is for kilometer long rides but most days when it is working you will have to put up with only a couple of hundred! Like the rest of the region Cherating relies on the monsoon generated windswell and can be surfed even on the smallest of days.
This weekend, there was a house in our city, (about five minutes walking distance), that was having an open house yard sell.
Their house was built in 1904. (My house was built in 1890.) I'm in LOVE with old, antique, vintage stuff. From houses, to clothing, to CAMERAS, to LIFESTYLES.
These people knew exactly how to live in that completely vintage, old-fashioned way. Their home wasn't ever air conditioned. And they've been living there since 1988. Well, little did I know, but the man living there is a WIDELY known photographer.
www.garygruby.com/ <--His website!
He does AMAZING things with his many cameras. He is selling SEVERAL vintage cameras, including some SUPER awesome collapsible Polaroid cameras. He was a very inspiring and very talented older man, and just speaking to him was such a pleasure. :]
I hope all of you get to have experiences like I had.
Math test Thursday. So I'll be studying hardcore. :[ Pray for me! I'm so nervous :[
ANYWAYS, on to five random things you may or may not know about me. (I've been tagged so many times for so many things, I can't even count. I tag everyone by the way ;])
1. My dreams are almost ALWAYS realistic. It's quite aggravating actually. I'd rather have trippy, yet awesome dreams, rather than waking up wondering if I ACTUALLY met Justin Bieber. :|
2. I'm a good friend. I'm not saying because I'm proud. I'm saying it because I strive to be by my friend's sides. I want them to be happy, to make good decisions, to remember who they are, to go for their goals, to love, to have fun, to explore, and to really be able to trust me as a friend. I'll hold in a secret until the day I die, and I love helping people with their problems, or just being there for them to talk to. I know I can't always hang out with people, but I'm always here if you need to talk. This means all you Flickrists as well!
3. I love SO many different types of music. Back in highschool, I was STRICTLY into heavier music. (Metal, hardcore, screamo, etc.) But lately, I've been digging mostly everything. I love reggae, mainstream, pop-punk, rap, hip hop, indie, techno, rock, classic rock, hardcore, metal. Everything except country mainly. :P
4. My favorite bands/singers lately are!: Katy Perry, The Noisettes, MGMT, B.O.B., Nicki Minaj, Avenged Sevenfold, and Lady Gaga. There are many more I just can't remember. :[
5. I've been drinking ONLY water, (and the occasional coffee) for the past two weeks! And I must say, I've had less acne, and more energy!
Hope you enjoyed, and learned a thing or two about me! Interact with me in the comments! :] What're some bands I should check out?
First the watches in the light, then a shot with simulated subdued light - actually shot in complete darkness, but a strongly reduced fill flash was fired.
The ugly orange, green and white reflections are from LED's on my computer, scanner, printer etc. - these have been blocked off by black cloth for the following shots.
The shot at 22:12 was the first of the decay series, this is how it looks immediately after "lights off". Notice that the initial luminosity of the SuperLuminova on both Fortis is much brighter than the tritium tubes on the Ball.
For the following shots the watches have been covered up, and the entire setup stayed in complete darkness between the shots. The decay of luminosity for SL makes the advantage of tritium tubes clear in the second shot.
Check the time as indicated on the Ball watch for elapsed time between the shots
One word about the exposure: All shot at ISO 200, 15sec f/5.6. Opening up to f/5.6 means that overall DoF is shallow, but closing down to f/8 or f/11 will cause the luminous dots on the seconds hands on both the B-42 Marinemaster and the Ball become (for the camera only) invisible. Going for a 30sec exposure time would have caused "burn out" on the Marinemaster and the Flieger, because they are initially too bright. Overall it's a compromise.
The final shot shows how it remains "all night long". As mentioned elsewhere, a camera sees different than a human eye, so one final personal remark. Constant exposure lume shot series like this do favor tritium tubes.
Though it may not anymore be visible in the pictures because a constant exposure was used for all shots, the Fortis B-42 Marinemaster remains comfortable readable throughout the night (with full dark adapted eyes). On the new B-42 Flieger only the hands can be seen through the night.

Yesterday afternoon when I was leaving work, I witnessed some kids harassing a homeless man standing on the corner asking for money. The parents were nearby, talking to the concierge of the hotel next to my building. I stopped and watched for a few seconds, and then quietly told the kids to leave the man alone. They turned towards me and began saying, "He's a crack addict, he's a loser, he lives on the sidewalk" and numerous other taunts.
The parents finally walked over to see what was going on, and asked me why I was talking to their children.
"Your children are harassing this man," I told them.
"That man is begging in the street to buy booze and drugs," they told me. "You're no better than him if you try to take up for him."
The whole scene angered and saddened me.
"First of all, why are you wasting time arguing with me instead of focusing on what was happening? Your children were harassing a man in the street who had done nothing to them. I witnessed the whole thing."
"Why don't you just move along, bitch, and not tell me how to raise my children? And why don't you just let all these losers move in with you if you love them so much?"
I just shook my head and walked away, feeling myself starting to cry. As recently as Monday night, I listened while Maya Angelou spoke of how proud she was of the residents of Houston for opening their doors and hearts to so many Katrina victims. Yesterday, I witnessed the opposite: total lack of compassion for a fellow human being.
What kind of example are we setting for our children when we teach them intolerance?

The S boasted modifications typical of a higher-performance Porsche: these included a re-profiled cam, larger valves, better porting, loftier compression (9.8:1 vs. 9.0) and larger jets for the Weber carburettors (which were otherwise much like those given to the base 911 from early '66).
The result was 30 more horsepower, totalling 180 horsepower, furthermore the torque improved fractionally to 127 pound-feet, peaking fully at 1,000 rpm higher.
Unlike other models, the S lacked a choke, but pumping the accelerator was usually enough for starting. On the other hand, merely blipping the throttle on the freer-breathing S would send the tacho needle zinging to its 7,300 rpm redline. Porsche thus wisely fitted an ignition cut-out that interrupted spark to the plugs when it neared maximum revs, thus protecting the valve-train from overly enthusiastic drivers.
Naturally, the S also received chassis upgrades to match its extra power. These included a rear anti-roll bar (augmenting the one in front), Koni shocks, ventilated instead of solid-rotor disc brakes all-round and, soon to be a 911 hallmark, pretty five-spoke Fuchs alloy wheels that cut five pounds from the unsprung weight at each hub.
S gear ratios were evenly spaced except for the five-speed transmission's overdrive top, which was purposely very “high”. It gave 100 mph at 4,200 rpm, hardly a strain for the free-revving flat-six. Pulling a max rpm in the lower gears allowed the model to net 0-60 in eight seconds or less, running a standing quarter-mile of under 16 seconds at 90-plus mph.
Built in 1968 this fine example is finished in white with a contrasting black interior, and we're informed that it is in excellent condition throughout having undergone a full restoration. The interior is described as being “flawless”, boasting a period Grundig radio.
The car resided in Italy for many years and is now presented with a UK MoT certificate which is valid until July 2015, and is accompanied with European title documents. A fine example of a highly desirable motor car, and with values ever increasing, now is the time to buy one of Zuffenhausen's finest.

I don't have a real Halloween picture to share this year, so I thought this shot of the Reed Flute Cave in Guilin, China would have to do. The somewhat garish lighting is throughout this expansive cave.
"With its location five kilometers northwest of the downtown of Guilin, the Reed Flute Cave is a brilliant cave marked on almost all travel itineraries. The cave got its name from the verdant reeds growing outside it, with which people make flutes." travelchinaguide

Worms, anyone? I've got plenty to go 'round.
So much for a break from silly self portraits, haha. From my last 52 week entry:
I figure I could use a break from the more fun and silly self's for this 52 week'r.
Growing up I used to love those gummy candies that are available at Walgreens and other corner convenience stores. My favorites were the gummy candies that were lathered and coated in sugar. More particularly the peach rings, and the sugar battered creepy crawlies.
It's been a while since I've indulged in the gummy goodness. Until today at least. I went to Safeway and swooped up a bag of non-sugar coated worms. They were great tasting ... at first. on nom nom nom
While taking this series of self portraits I repeatedly found myself chewing and eating the gummy worms. I downed so many that they tasted absolutely horrendous by the time I got the shot I wanted.
For the record, that is indeed a real jumbo sized creepy crawly slimey squirming live wriggling pulsing night crawling earthworm in my left hand!
Who said worms aren't cute? Earthworms are cool. And tapeworms are cute.
In any case, with Happy Hallow right around the corner -stay safe, and have fun out there everyone!

This is Bruno Zacchini's Super Repeating Cannon. It resides in the Museum of the Circus in Sarasota, Florida.
"Flying isn't the hard part; landing in the net is" - Mario Zacchini
John Ringling saw the Zacchinis perform at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, where he signed Hugo and Bruno (brothers) Zacchinni for the 1929 season of Ringling Brothers Circus. Over the years, the Zachinni family has dominated the human cannonball tradition. From the earliest 1900s, the Zachini brothers and their children have amazed thousands with their death-defying performance.
In 1946-47, the first Super-repeating cannon was designed and built by Bruno Zacchini with the assistance of his brother, Teobaldo in Sarasota. They used a GMC truck as the base. Bruno's daughter, Silvana, at the age of 16, became the first woman to be shot from this cannon. Later she was joined by her aunt, Simone Loyal, as a double human cannon ball act. Hugo was the last of the family members to take flight on August 29, 1991. The Zacchini's also suffered several serious accidents, including one, where two of them collided in mid air having been simultaneously shot from opposing cannons.
In 1961, this particular cannon would shoot 2 performers nearly 140' through the air in seconds of each other at speeds of 125 mph. The cannon is 37' long including the cab, 8' wide, and 20' high with the barrel raised. It is mounted on a Mack truck.
The operating mechanism has been removed--it remains a closely guarded family secret.
The cannon was made available to the museum through the courtesy of Silvana Zacchini Meluza.

The Cathedral of Morelia is a religious compound headquarters of the Archdiocese of Morelia of the Catholic Church in Mexico. It is located as the name itself says it in the city of Morelia, capital of Michoacan, Mexico. The cathedral is located on the first frame of the city, forming the trace of the Historic Center of Morelia. The building was built in the eighteenth century the Spanish colonial times, is in Baroque style and is made of pink quarry which gives it a distinctive and characteristic color.
# Architecturally, the Cathedral of Morelia compared against other Cathedrals in Mexico is similar to the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City, Puebla Cathedral, and even inside the Cathedral of Guadalajara.
# The cathedral is the most emblematic and representative buildings of Morelia given their height, since it has two tall towers that can be seen throughout the valley of the city. For his height, the towers of the Catedral de Morelia (66.8 m) are the fourth highest in Mexico after the towers of the Sanctuary of Guadalupe (Cathedral Unfinished) in Zamora de Hidalgo (105 m) of the cathedral in Villahermosa (80 m) and the Sanctuary of Guadalupe, San Luis Potosi (68 m).
# Has a unique scenic beauty lighting placed by the company that lit the Eiffel Tower in Paris. On weekends, the cathedral offers a sound and light show with this lighting.
# The cathedral is dedicated to the Transfiguration and its interior houses two highly venerated image, Sacred Heart of Jesus who is the patron saint of the city, and the Lord of the Sacristy a Christ very old paste made of cornstalks. Which is much visited and loved by the congregation.
# Its beautiful architecture and history are other reasons why it has become an icon of the city.
# Inside this enclosure because of its beauty, sound and spacious sound, set for a variety of artistic and cultural events as the International Organ Festival in Morelia, and the International Music Festival of Morelia.
The current cathedral of Morelia was not the only cathedral in the city has had since 1580, when civil and ecclesiastical powers were transferred from Patzcuaro Michoacan to Valladolid (Morelia previous name), opened a cathedral, much lower the current size and artistic value. That building was located on the corner of the present streets of Corregidor and Abasolo. However, due to growth experienced by the city at the end of s. Sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, and because of a fire in 1584 severely affected the former cathedral building, it became necessary to think of another temple, larger, robust and important. That is why at the beginning of s. XVII the cathedral chapter began efforts to build the new cathedral.
Many projects were proposed, but until mid-century the project was accepted by the Italian architect Vincenzo Barrochio, also known as the Plaster Vicente Barroso by the Viceroy Francisco Fernandez de la Cueva, Duke of Albuquerque on March 22, 1660 concluding continuous procedures and construction projects over a long period of almost 80 years.
On May 6, 1660 the first stone of the building was laid by Bishop Fray Marcos Ramírez del Prado. The building itself was given by Vicenzo Barrochio until his death in 1692, why the great architect could not see completed his monumental work. However, only 52 years after the death of the teacher, his pupils got through the daunting task of architecture, so that the magnificent work was completed in 1744.
The cathedral suffered several raids by the army for independence, in the year 1810. By the end of the nineteenth century built the perimeter fence that marks the atrium. In the late 90s of the twentieth century restoration work carried out various internal and external, thereby better preserved the beauty of the building. Also, in the early twenty-first century, opened the new stage lighting of the cathedral of Morelia.

I got L Glass!!!
Well I have finally joined the L Glass club. I wasn't sure if I would ever get there but I made it. So what is the secret handshake anyway?
I have thought long and hard about getting the 16-35mm f/2.8L but I could not bring myself to spend that much on one lens. After some sage advice from Cory Disbrow, I decided to get this lens along with the 70-200mm f/4L instead. I would get more range for less $$. Obviously it is not f/2.8, but after I start taking some consistently high quality shots (not there yet) I think I will be able to justify it to myself. Cory did mention something that gave me pause. He said that I might consider holding off until I could afford the 70-200 f/4L with IS. It is double the price and I am not known for being patient where gear is concerned (Sorry, Julie). However I did hold off for a bit to think it over. I knew I would use the 17-40. I have rented it and loved it. I have often wanted to go wider than my existing 28-135mm would allow.
So now my quandary, I have camera $$ to spend and I am not sure what to spend it on. My options:
-The 70-200mm 4/L without IS (side note, I just lost a bid for a used one on eBay as I was typing this)
-The Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 - I really like what Tom Bricker has done with this lens (even though its on a Nikon) but I will need to wait for one to be in stock @ B&H or buy from Hong Kong. Yeah, I know it will lean my camera bag to the wide angle side, but I can always rent a telephoto if I need it. (I have a reservation for the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II for a wedding/cruise in October)
-Upgrade my 50mm prime to f/1.4 from f/1.8. Not sure how much of an edge the additional aperture will get me on dark Disney rides. I have yet to use my 7D @ a Disney park, so I am not sure what I can do with it. I have only used it with my XTi body.
-Forget the lenses and buy Photoshop. I use PSPx2 but I have yet to use all of its capabilities. Also, next year my daughter will hit high school (Nooooooo!!!!) and some places will let her get the student discount as a result.
Any opinions?
I am going to put my XTi body on eBay in a couple days to fund my purchase of
Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod Legs along with a Manfrotto 322RC2 Joystick Head, so if anybody is interested......

Photoshopcreatie.

An odd sign we saw in some Tube station. I have absolutely no idea what it actually refers to, but considering that I am a PHP developer by trade, this was quite funny to me.

I keep trying to get this better... constructive feedback more than welcome! I played in lightroom a bit with split toning trying to get better greens without turning the water green too...
I want to thank Gary Randall for all his encouragement and help, he is a master in the Mt. Hood forest and very inspiring!
These words from an old much faved version of this shot (Waters of Life, seen below) still apply today;
"For all of my life this little waterfall was a stopping place on camping trips along the Forest Road 23 above Trout Lake, Washington... Big Spring Creek, a sweet little place, surrounded by huckleberries and wildflowers... and I would always pour the icy snowmelt and spring water over my head and take a big drink of pure delicious water...
I have slept in my truck beside this falls listening to the music of the earth in all its glory weaving its songs throughout my dreams...
Running up the steep path alongside the fast flowing stream, through the tall trees, is a stimulant of life force like no other... panting for breath in the high altitude while my out of shape heart pounds... but oh so full of LIFE and joy!
THis day the fog was so magical... I had never seen it quite like this before! so mysterious... wonderful!! "

A view from the top of the stairs leading from El Alto down to La Paz (in the background).
El Alto is the sister city of La Paz, right next to it but above, in the altiplano. While La Paz expands downwards along the valley, with the richest population leaving in the lowest parts, El Alto is growing further from it, peopled by poor immigrants from the highlands.

I quit smoking on Monday night. I think about having a cigarette probably every 5 minutes. It will just pop in my head "Oh, time for a smoke!!" Then I remember.
I watch that show Intervention, and I always think for an alcoholic, how sad and hard it would be to have an addiction to alcohol. To where you could NEVER have a drink for the rest of your life. I hardly ever drink, but if I want to drink I can, and I can not drink for another 8 months.
So, with cigarettes, I suppose I am like an alcoholic or any addict for that matter. I can never have another cigarette for the rest of my life.
Do you know this makes me cry inside? It isn't even that I'm addicted to the nicotine so much. I've never had a real strong "Oh my God I NEED a cigarette RIGHT NOW before I kill someone." feeling. I just truly enjoy smoking. So much so that I smoked nearly 2 packs within a 24 hour period. Yeah, I know. Crazy! I could out smoke probably anyone.
The thought of not going on a long drive on the weekend without smoking, makes me sad. What will I do??? Going and having a coffee, and not smoking? Seriously??? I've seen people do it, but I don't' know how?!
It's hard too when the dude at 7-11 knows what cigarettes I smoke, and immediatly goes for them. I went there yesterday, and had to stop him and tell him I quit.
I've had so many split second thoughts of running to 7-11 and just buying a pack. Screw it. Then I come back down to reality, and I realize the only good reason I have to continue smoking is: I like it.
I have a list of reason to not smoke. Mainly, I don't have the best genes out there. Since my Dad died at 29 years old from heart disease, dying has never been far from my mind. It's actually always been pretty much right there ever since I realized about death and dying. I want to live as long as I can, and be here to see my Grandchildren. I can't imagine anything worse then dying before my children are grown.
So, yeah. I've got quite the battle ahead of me. I'm not even 48 hours into this. I'm feeling pretty good though about it. I'm even taking out $10 a day, just to see how much money I actually throw away.
My hair still smells clean. I love that!
Here's another version of the PHP (for Prvi Hrvatski Pistolj - First Croatian Pistol), the MV-9, made in the early 1990's in Croatia. The MV's are often described as a love child of a Walther P38 and a Beretta 92, as it has features of both. The barrel locking system is the tilting wedge with a "push button" used by both the Beretta and the Walther. It has the Walther's exposed barrel and the Beretta's high capacity magazine. The MV-9 seen here is somewhat shorter than the MV-17, as the muzzle is almost flush with the front of the slide.
In spite of the fact that it's a first attempt and that there was a particularly nasty war going on at the time, the pistol is fairly well made. It has the checkerboard Croatian crest stamped on the top of the slide, just behind the exposed portion of the barrel.
This one shows some use as evidenced by dings, scratches and honest wear, compared to the MV17, which came to me in nearly pristine, unissued condition.
The MV pistols were made by the arsenal which later became HS Arms, manufacturer of the HS2000, sold in the U. S. as the Springfield Armory XD series.

From Edmunds (http://www.edmunds.com/honda/accord/2009/review.html) -
For two decades now, there have been two perennial no-brainer choices for a midsize family sedan: the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry. Both have legions of satisfied owners and top reputations for reliability and safety. Deciding between the two often came down to this: If you wanted a softly sprung car with superior isolation, the Camry was the way to go -- and if you wanted a sporty ride and could live with a tad less refinement, the Accord was the sedan of choice. There's still some truth to this adage for 2009, but things have changed rapidly in the midsize sedan segment. For one thing, the Accord has grown bigger and softer with its latest redesign; for another, the competition has caught up.
Here's how things shake out for the Accord in today's family sedan free-for-all. The Honda is now roughly the fourth-sportiest entrant, by our count, trailing the canyon-king Nissan Altima, the upsized but still capable Mazda 6 and the often-overlooked Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan twins. It's also still hampered by traditional Honda foibles like elevated road noise and exaggerated brake pedal vibration during hard stops. Performance is likewise uninspiring -- while the upgraded 2.4-liter four-cylinder in the EX is pleasant, the base engine is merely adequate, and the top-of-the-line 3.5-liter V6 is overmatched in terms of acceleration by many rival six-cylinder engines.
Don't get us wrong -- the 2009 Honda Accord remains an appealing car, for a variety of reasons. First of all, it's got an ace up its sleeve that most competitors don't: its sterling reputation for reliability. Also, the Accord has ballooned to such a degree that the EPA classifies it as a "large car," and it shows in the commodious cabin, which boasts one of the most accommodating backseats of any family sedan. The center stack is undeniably button-happy, but its premium look and feel evokes luxury sedans such as the Infiniti M series. Like most Hondas, the Accord feels extraordinarily well constructed, and its interior materials are a cut above the rival Camry's. Moreover, that reputation for reliability pays off when it's time to sell, as the Accord boasts one of the best resale values around.
The Accord is also one of the few family sedans that's available in a coupe body style, and we should note that the coupe is substantially sportier than the workaday sedan, particularly with the optional V6 and coupe-exclusive six-speed manual. Whichever style you prefer, the Accord remains a smart choice on the strength of its proven track record. However, unlike Accords of the past, it doesn't really elevate itself above the competition once you get behind the wheel. As before, you're not going to go wrong with the Accord, but we'd advise taking a close look at the above-mentioned competitors, along with the Hyundai Sonata and much improved Chevrolet Malibu before making your decision.
"You're sick of hangin' around and you'd like to travel;
Get tired of travelin' and you want to settle down.
I guess they can't revoke your soul for tryin',
Get out of the door and light out and look all around.
Sometimes the light's all shinin' on me;
Other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me What a long, strange trip it's been.
Truckin', I'm a goin' home. Whoa whoa baby, back where I belong,
Back home, sit down and patch my bones, and get back truckin' on.
Hey now get back truckin' home."

So today I was out and I saw this old Chevy pickup truck. I had my camera with me, and being inspired by Patty's (ppphotograph) amazing work, lately, like this for instance; power wagon.
I just knew I couldn't pass up this opportunity. The challenge was photographing it where it was, parked on a city street in Brooklyn, in surroundings that were anything but picturesque. I made a shoot out of it anyway, wishing that I at the very least had my tripod with me. I will post some of the others at a later date, but for now I had way too much fun with this one in Photoshop and I am offering it up.

The translation between the architectural design and the subsequent actualization process is mediated by various tools and techniques. Through the adoption in architectural design practice of computation and information technologies, with their capacity for a relatively seamless transition between design and fabrication, a more integrated workflow across the design and actualization process is made more accessible to designers. In recent years, designers have become increasingly able to move effortlessly between digital modeling, performance simulation, and physical realization. As technology evolves, this rapidly evolving field continually presents architects and designers with new challenges and opportunities for creative exploration as well as a more materially intelligent practice. This course pursued research in architectural design placing technology as a driver in the creative processes. In the course, ceramics served as the framework for research, discussion and experimentation on digital design and fabrication technologies. While ceramics has one of the longest histories as a material in architecture, it may also still be one of the material families to offer the potential and mutability to generate a range of novel applications by engaging a variety of emerging digital fabrication processes. The Craft-based manufacturing and high-volume industrial production traditionally associated with clay-based ceramics was rethought through the lens of digital design and fabrication techniques. The extension of the capacity for the application of ceramics in architecture through an engagement with digital design and fabrication was explored during semester-long group research projects with the additional guidance of the Harvard Ceramics Program and with support from the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturer’s Association (ASCER).

Mia Martini - Fiore di melograno -BELLISSIMO BRANO E VIDEO CONSIGLIATISSIMO!!!!!!!!!!!! WONDERFUL SONG AND VIDEO LOOK AT!!!!!!!!!
MELOGRANO
SIGNIFICATO: FERTILITA', RICCHEZZA, AMORE ARDENTE
FAMIGLIA: Punicaceae
LUOGO D’ORIGINE: Area Sud-Ovest dell'Asia
PERIODO DI FIORITURA: Inizio Estate

The Mount - other wise know as Mauao
Please view on black.
The Legend of Mauao
In the ancient times of the Maori people there lived a nameless hill, he sat alone in a discarded inland area and was slave to Otanewainuku, the most prestigious mountain of Tauranga Moana. Nearby there lived a captivating hill whose name was Puwhenua, she was adorned with the beauty of Tanemahuta (God of the Forest). The nameless one desired the affection of Puwhenua, but alas her heart had already been won by Otanewainuku. This resulted in disparity which led the nameless one to decide to take his life by drowning in Te Moananui-a-Kiwa (Pacific Ocean). So he called upon his companions the Patupaiarehe (fairy people) who dwelt in the dark recesses of the forest. The Patupaiarehe were people of the night and possess magical powers, the nameless one knew that with their help his ambition to end his life will be accomplished. When night fell, they laced the nameless one with dozens of ropes and began to heave and pull. The land rumbled as the Patupaiarehe forced the nameless one from his position. A valley was gouged as they heaved him along, which is where you will now find that the Waimapu river flows. They continued along the Tauranga Moana channels where Hairini, Maungatapu and Matapihi reside. Upon their arrival near the great ocean of Kiwa, daybreak was fast approaching. Unfortunately for the nameless one this was proving to be quite a complex and problematic task. The rays of Tama nui te ra (Sun) began to light up the summit of the nameless hill and before they knew it, the Patupaiarehe were exposed to the rays of light, so they retreated back to the depths of the forests.
The Patupaiarehe decided to give the name Mauao to this mountain which now marks the entrance into the Tauranga harbour. The translation of Mauao can literally be termed as 'caught by the dawn'. In time this mountain has assumed its own great prestige and mana even over his once rival Otanewainuku and now stands as the symbol of all tribes of Tauranga Moana.

In 1961 the SAR called for tenders for two narrow gauge diesel-electric locomotives for the Port Lincoln Division. A.E. Goodwin Ltd of Sydney was awarded the contract and locomotives 850 and 851 were delivered in March and April 1962. They were Alco Model DL531 900 HP Co-Co locomotives, almost identical to the earlier batch of ten (830-839) which had been supplied for broad gauge use. Seven more 830s were built specifically for the Port Lincoln Division (852-855 and 871-873).
850 was the first SAR narrow gauge diesel-electric locomotive. On its way to Port Lincoln it worked an ore train from Broken Hill to Port Pirie, then was conveyed by road from Crystal Brook to Port Lincoln. It entered service there on 24 March 1962 and has spent its entire working life on the Port Lincoln Division. When first delivered, it was based at Thevenard together with sister unit 851 for hauling gypsum from the Kevin mine. Before long both went into general service.

I was reminded by a good friend of mine of Chris Killip's work which is being exhibited in France just now. This my more recent take (2009) in terms of time but some things don't seem to change that much.
Chris Killip's book is just as valid today: "When I first saw the beach at Lynemouth in January 1976, I recognized the industry above it but nothing else I was seeing. The beach beneath me was full of activity with horses and carts backed into the sea. Men were standing in the sea next to the carts, using small wire nets attached to poles to fish out the coal from the water beneath them. The place confounded time; here the Middle Ages and the twentieth century intertwined. Chris Killip began photographing the people of Lynemouth seacoal beach in the north east of England in 1982, after nearly seven years of failed efforts to obtain their consent. During 1983 to 1984 he lived in a caravan on the seacoal camp, and documented the life, work and the struggle to survive on the beach, using his unflinching style of objective documentation. Fifty, of the one hundred and twenty four images published here, were first shown in 1984 at the Side Gallery in Newcastle and others were an important element of Killips ground-breaking and legendary book In Flagrante, published four years later. Chris Killip, born on the Isle of Man in 1946, is a Professor of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University where he has taught since 1991. His works are held in the permanent collections of, among others: Museum of Modern Art, New York; George Eastman House; Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco; Museum Folkwang, Essen; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. His books include In Flagrante (1988), Pirelli Work (2007), and Here Comes Everybody (2009)." Quoted from Amazon

The building is actually yellow, the late afternoon light makes it look gold. This is the Fritz B. Burns Building housing the adminstrative staff and the cafeteria at Loyoloa Law School in Central, Los Angeles, this building and two others on campus were designed by renowned architect, Frank Gehry.
