Contrasted styles in Edinburgh buses -Daimler FSC182, a 1949 Daimler CVG6/Metro-Cammell , with a 1954 Leyland PD2/20 - MCW Orion , LFS480 . At Lathalmond Ope Day.
This bus was originally purchased with a Leyland H56R body. In 1957 Doncaster acquired two 1947-built Sunbeam W trolleybus chassis from Mexborough & Swinton. They were fitted with new Roe bodies and put into service with fleet numbers 352 and 353. On withdrawal, the body from 353 was transferred to 124 and the original was scrapped. Doncaster re-used quite a number of bodies from its trolleybuses in this way although the majority went on to new Daimler CVG6 and Leyland PD2/40 chassis. 123 and 124 were the only buses to have their existing bodies replaced. The giveaway was the thick pillar behind the first upstairs window, which contained the duct for the cables from the trolley poles.
Lancaster 881 is a 1957 built Leyland PD2/41-E.Lancs seen here around Heysham on 31/3/75.. This bus is now preserved.
Ex Burnley No. 175 , (HG 9416) , a 1947 Leyland PD2/3-Leyland is here put out to grass at Berresfords Scrap yard at Cheddleton on 3/3/68.
Other Wallasey bus shots have already appeared from this weekend on my site - this image being the only Wallasey one 'missed' - at Wallasey's depot on Sunday morning, 5/4/70 are the two types of PD2 operated. No. 66 , a PD2/12 wih Weymann body contrasts with No.40 , a PD2/1 with Metro-Cammell body. Both are from 1951. The latter were great favourites of mine with their incredible ancient prewar look !
Alexanders NRB144 was a 1951 Leyland PD2/3 - Alexander seen here leaving Aberdeen on 31/8/71. This bus had the plainer typeface Northern fleetname applied.
Borrowed from Maidstone Corporation - Leyland PD2 Titan No.16 (516 RKR) was used in 1975-76 by London Country to supplement the RMC fleet, along with another five such vehicles on rotation.
The rugged looking provincial design makes an interesting contrast to the smooth lines of the Routemaster coach. RMC1488 (488 CLT) worked the 477 from Dartford to Chelsfield in 1975-76, became a trainer with LT and ended up in France.

The RMC coaches - the success of the Routemaster coach prototype CRL4 (RMC4), combined with growth in GreenLine travel, produced an inevitable result. London Transport, after so many times building double-decker coach prototypes, now built a whole class of them, 68 in total RMC1453 - RMC1520. They were modified standard routemasters, 27ft 8in long, 8ft wide, with an enclosed rear platform and electric doors. This also meant having a downstairs emergency exit, which was built into the rear of the platform, like CRL4 (RMC4).
Apparently, an impressive 38 of the type entered preservation - a remarkably high percentage! Plus prototype RMC4.

'Warrington 50' BED731C Leyland Titan PD2/40 along with Network Warrington's Olympians 181 + 180.
'50' is usually based at the 'North West Museum of Road Transport' at St Helens and occasionally calls in it's home town to be serviced at the Wilderspool depot.
One of Wallseys incredibly old-fashioned looking Metro-Cammell bodied Leyland PD2'1's - No.44 leaves New Brighton bus station in the rain on 24/6/67. Although dating from 1951 they looked very prewar to me!
389KDT was a 1963 Leyland Titan PD2/40 and had been bought by Doncaster Corporation Transport as a chassis only. It had then been fitted with the Roe 1955 built body which had been removed from ex-Mexborough & Swinton trolleybus EWT479.
One of only 3 similar in the fleet ,Eastbourne No.27 a 1948 Leyland PD2 / Bruce-E.Lancs passes the station on 5/9/67. A very attractive body - showing more curves than the Regent version. No.27 lasted in service only a furthur 5 months.
This vehicle took part in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1995. It's a 1958 Leyland Titan PD2 which entered service with Birkenhead Corporation Transport in 1958 with fleet number 10 and has Massey bodywork. In 1969 this became part of Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive where in continued in service until 1974 when was used in the driver training school. In 1980 it was acquired by the 201 Bus Group of the Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society. A note in the programme of the event reads as follows:

Following regular service use, this vehicle was in the driving school until 1980 and has since been restored by the 201 Bus Group.

Blackpool PD2 346 has been extracted from the annex of our depot and is now being stripped for restoration work to start. This will be jointly funded by LTT and Catch22bus. It has been transferred to our depot yard where useful parts will be stored in our garages and obsolete bits removed will be disposed of. Be good to have this full front pd2 restored!
Portsmouth 1956 built Leyland PD2/12-MCW No.100 near the Station bridge on 6/9/67. Note the old trolley poles(system closed 4 years earlier). No.100 was converted to an open-top bus in 1970 and survived to be taken over by the new organisation in 1986.
For the last couple of days we at RBW have had fellow flickrite 'stokie14's open top PD2 in for some work. Today all the jobs were completed and a road test necessary. Here the ex Darwen (Lancashire Municipal) East Lancs bodied Leyland Titan PD2a JTF 218F is seen betwixt threatening skies and winter sunshine on Makro's car park about half a mile from our yard.

A very fleeting visit to Preston produced just two buses - here is blue-liveried No.32 , a 1957 Leyland PD2/10 with Crossley body.
Leyland PD2 with Weymann body in Baslow village Derbyshire 29April 2021, as it negotiated the bridge over the River Derwent.
On the 29th April 1921 Derbyshire-based Hulleys of Baslow purchased their first bus. Regrettably 100-years later plans to celebrate the event formally have for the time being been dashed by COVID, although the company do intend to organise something in the future.
However, a very last minute decision resulted in their route 170/X70 (Bakewell & Chesterfield), be operated on 29th April 2021 in part by three of their ‘celebrities’, plus duplicates of two locally preserved buses, 225 being one of them.
No. 128 is a 1950 Leyland PD2/3- Weymann with a dual entrance fully fronted body to give it that unique Bournemouth look! It is seen here at The Square on 25/1/69. This vehicle is now preserved.
It is interesting, I think that Aubrey and Ebony has similar color but different lightness. While Saffy has a little more pink toned skin.
The extra yellowness of Ebony here is because of bad lights.
PD2/40 3049 ARJ200B of Hyde Road is seen on Mosley Street on a short working 166 whilst an ex North Western Fleetline enters Parker Street Bus Station. January 1975.

Manchester's Heaton Park was a great setting to see the vintage vehicles exiting through the parkland on the occasion of the Trans Lancs Transport Show. As hinted at in the tarmac, the park also has a heritage tramway so is worth visiting for this too.
The bus illustrated here is a Leyland Titan PD2/40 from 1958. Its bodywork is by Burlingham of Blackpool carrying the livery of Manchester Corporation.
The PD2 was very much the 'go to' double deck chassis in the post war years up to 1970, whilst it also had competition from AEC, Guy and Daimler. The state owned sector had to buy Bristol products.
In my bus spotting days, I got to see Manchester buses on two separate occasions in 1967. In May we did a planespotting bash that took in Ringway, but got many more buses on a dedicated day out from Blackpool to Manchester city centre in July of that year. Mum stayed behind at the seaside to go shopping and to see some entertainer, whose name now escapes me.
I have TNA 495 and 497 underlined in my Ian Allan book, so this would have been a 'gap-filler' !

1965 Leyland Titan PD2, Reg No. FDB 334C taking part in the Marine Drive road run during the Llandudno transport festivel.
This was one of the entrants in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1995. It's a 1958 Leyland Titan PD2/34 with a Burlingham H64R body, originally part of the Manchester Corporation Transport fleet, and is now part of the collection of the Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester. A note in the programme of the event says this about the vehicle:
Leyland PD2/34, Burlingham H64R, 1958 TNA520
Entered by J Crankshaw, Meltham, Huddersfield
This vehicle is unusual in that it originally entered service with a fully automatic gearbox. It was later converted to semi-automatic, which is itself unusual.
Eastbourne 1948 built Leyland PD2/Bruce-East Lancs No.26 was one of only 3 similar. It is seen here near the Station on 5/9/67. This bus was withdrawn in Feb'68.
Passing Portsmouth dockyard is No.106, a 1956 Leyland PD2/12-MCW on 6/9/67. The bus was withdrawn in 1970.

The PD2/40 version of the Leyland Titan was certainly produced in numbers, with this late example being new to Salford, in 04/1967. It is seen here at Crich Tramway Museum, on 19/05/2002, for the museum's Transport Extravaganza. It is now known as Crich Tramway Village. On display in front ov the bus are three Rover P4s. From right to left of the photo, they are; KYJ930, a Rover 100, first registered in 07/1960; VFF946, a Rover 80, first registered in 07/1961 and 582GUA, another Rover 100. This one being first registered in 09/1963. The Rover 100s were powered by a 2.6ltr. engine while the Rover 80 was powered by a 2.2ltr. engine.
The camera being a Pentax MZ-M with the film being a Fujichrome Colourslide.
I would request, as with all my photos, that they are not copied or downloaded in any way, shape or form. © Peter Steel 2002.

Leyland PD2 with Eastern Counties (later Eastern Coachworks) at the Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum North Lincolnshire for the annual Gathering. Supplied to Keighley West Yorkshire as K451 with registration YG 2058 but now JUB 29, this now apparently is the only one of its type and style still in existence. Withdrawn from service in 1947 then later into preservation 1963 to date.
