In the early 'sixties if you took a train from London to Birmingham at weekends you went from Paddington via Banbury and Leamington Spa and arrived at the splendid old Snow Hill station. Once electrification of the West Coast Main Line was complete, Snow Hill was run down, closed in 1972 and eventually demolished but was rebuilt and reopened as a very different place in 1987.

This bus was probably new in around the 60s to Edinburgh Corporation.

seen here at South Queensferry.

Eastern scottish had a spell of a shortage of buses and bought Leyland PD2s from Edinburgh Corporation.

Leyland PD2/3, with Leyland body. New 1950. It was one of the RTWs involved in 8ft wide width testing. Taken a few years after it’s 1961 Aldenham overhaul and showing some scars. After here, spent rest of it’s life, up to 1970, as a trainer. Sold on to UK company.

One has to wonder what an 8ft wide AEC London RT would have looked like. Generally AECs of the species had a more refined look. Although AEC was not short of making some very mean looking trucks. Reference. Ian's Bus Stop RTWs.

This vehicle took part in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1993. It's a 1958 Leyland Titan PD2/30 that was delivered new to Wigan Corporation in November 1958 with fleet number 115. It is chassis 581260 and has a 9.8 litre diesel engine with bodywork by Northern Counties. It remained in service with Wigan until 1971 and then became a driver training bus. It's not listed in the programme of the event, but when it took part in the Rally in 1996 there was this note in the programme:

Oldham Corporation Leyland PD2. Oldham

Photographed in May 1980. I think these buses had special 7'6" wide bodywork. This particular bus is now preserved (after a spell with Weardale Motor Services). Its actually two years newer than the Fleetline in the next picture!

Amongst the rear-engine types at Seacombe Ferry Terminal on 26/6/71 was Birkenhead's No.26 , a 1959 Leyland PD2/40 with Massey body . Since my last visit to the area a year previous the livery had been simplified with more cream and the loss of the traditional fleetname to the new MPTE symbol.

A different approach used for Liverpool's livery - a 'Silver /Green' PD2/20 from 1961 - by the Town Hall on 29/3/75. The 'tin-front' design must have been one of the worst !

This small batch is the remainder from a Merseyside weekend .

1965 Leyland PD2/40-Massey No.L410 was originally Birkenhead 120 and is seen in Liverpool's livery at the Pier Head stance on 29/3/75.

A Matthew Brown brewery 'Lion Ales' pub behind. The brewery is long gone. Their beer wasn't really very good (IMO!) - but you can bet your life it was better than whatever rubbish the multinationals foist on the locals now - assuming the pub is still open.

Looking positively sparkling as it graces the streets of Skipton (UK), is this beautifully restored Leyland Titan PD2/1. It has a Leyland lowbridge body, resulting in an overall height of 13'5" as opposed to the UK standard 14'6".

The bus was new to Todmorden Joint Omnibus Committee in March 1948, UK registered GWU 12 and allocated Fleet No.2.

The bus was withdrawn from service in 1970 and moved immediately into preservation, ultimately joining the West Yorkshire Transport Heritage Trust collection in 2025.

The Titan series of buses were forward control, front engined double deck bus chassis manufactured by Leyland Motors (UK) between 1927 and 1969 (with a production break between 1942 and 1945). A number of different companies manufactured bodies for these chassis. The PD2 version first appeared in 1946.

Many thanks to Andrew McCormick for this shot of privately preserved 1954 all-Leyland PD2 GM6384 (ex Central SMT L484) being turned right from Highburgh Road southbound onto Byres Road, Glasgow, by owner driver.
