This is a photograph that I took at the Greater Manchester Transport Society’s Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1993. It’s a 1958 Leyland Titan PD2 and the programme of the event had this note about the vehicle:
Leyland Titan PD2, Massey H58R
Birkenhead Corporation 10
Entered by J. Nolan for the 201 Bus Group, Wallasey
Following regular service use, this vehicle was in the driving school until 1980 and has since been restored by the 201 Bus Group.

the sole survivor of 100 Leyland Titan PD2/1s new to in 1949/50 It was one of 50 with Park Royal bodies incorporating some BCT bespoke features including seat moquette and was delivered in 1950. The other 50 had Leyland’s own bodywork.

DB791. Brighton Corporation Leyland PD2 23 ACD was built in 1962 and despite being a half-cab it has a front entrance and staircase. It was converted to one man operation in 1966 but the driver had to twist round somewhat awkwardly to collect the fares.
It took part in the Aldershot & District Bus Running Day at Farnborough on Sunday, 7th September, 2014 and made several trips between Farnborough Main Railway Station and the rally venue at the 6th Form College. This is it arriving back from the station on such a trip - but the nearest the map could pin-point it is 'England, United Kingdom'!

This Leyland Titan PD2/20 with MetroCammell bodywork was part of a large order of vehicles to replace Edinburgh's first generation trams which were withdrawn in November 1956. Seen at Braids tram shelter in Edinburgh on day plaque unveiled.
Doncaster Corporation Transport 1963 Leyland Titan PD2/40 189 (389KDT) had been bought as chassis and fitted with the Roe built body removed from former trolleybus 394 EWT479.
It became SYPTE 1189 and is seen in Leicester Avenue Depot.
I thought the Burnley livery was very smart and was a good compromise between traditional and modern. Here is all-Leyland PD2/1 No. 149 from 1949 , leaving the Bus Station on 4/8/70.
From my "Manchester Area Buses"book.
This is the only shot not yet posted of Portsmouth buses taken on 6/9/67.

Leaving Carmarthen Bus Station on service to Llanelli, Eynon's FEK 1F is a Leyland PD2/37 with Massey forward entrance bodywork. It was new in 1968 as Wigan Corporation 25, becoming GMPTE 3290 in 1974.
Ex Birkenhead Corporation Leyland Titan PD2 seen inside our pristine workshop in the throws of having a 4cyl Cummins ISBe engine fitted. Iain's bulk obsures the shoe box sized power unit.
Before anyone starts to panic, GCM 152E is indeed having an engine change, but isn't downsizing, she's being beefed up to 680 spec from a 600.
Since the photo was taken, the 'new' engine's been installed and painted as has the whole of the engine bay and the surrounding chassis. Seemingly endless tweaks and modifications have now been completed and the bus is in the final stages of the job which should enable it to be collected by it's musuem owners very soon.
This was one of the participants in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally at Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1993. It's a former Portsmouth Corporation 1956 Leyland Titan PD2/12 and the programme of the event contained this note about the vehicle:
Leyland Titan PD2/12, MCW O81R. 1956 LRV988
Portsmouth Corporation
Entered by F. Gradwell, Mottram
Converted to open top by Portsmouth in 1972 and operated by them until 1980. This year the seats have been replaced on the upper deck.
Former Birkenhead Corporation PD2/40 (now Merseyside PTE 39) at Woodside in mid-1970. 39 was new in August 1960, and wears it's age well thanks to the timeless Massey bodywork so beloved of BCT.
3 of the batch were transferred to Liverpool between 1975 and 1977, but as far as I know 39 wasn't so lucky.
At a guess, the Driver had dashed to the public toilets to the right of the bus.
This was one of the vehicles taking art in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's annual Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1995. It's a 1967 Leyland Titan PD2/40 originally operated by Salford City Transport and the programme of the event said this about it:
'Leyland Titan PD2/40, Metro-Cammell, 1967 JRJ281E
Salford City Transport
Entered by M.C. & R.A.Cotton, Irlam, Lancs
This bus was the penultimate of 103 such vehicles bought by Salford City Transport between 1963 and 1967. Operated from the now closed Weaste Garage for most of its life. Withdrawn 1980 and was bought by the present owners for preservation in 1984.'
It was at that time one of the exhibits in the Greater Manchester Transport Museum, but now appears to be part of the Southdown Historic Vehicles Ltd collection in Worthing.
The pair of Leyland PD2/40s which Doncaster Transport put into service in 1963 with 1955 Roe bodies removed from withdrawn trolleybuses are seen here after repaint into SYPTE livery and transfer to the training fleet.
Oddly, because they were only 7' 6" wide as built, for training purposes these buses were fitted with nearside front wings from 8' wide PD2s or PD3s to bring the width closer to the 8' which was the norm for the passenger fleet. It can be seen that these project about 3" beyond the bodywork.
388 KDT was subsequently retained for preservation and later passed to the South Yorkshire Transport Museum where it resides today.
Warrington Borough Transport Leyland Titan PD2 AED31B was used as a promotional and marketing vehicle for the Coach Lines business in the mid nineties. It gained the orange plastic seats out of Dart 220 at the same time. It is seen at the Wilderspool depot not long after its transformation had taken place.

CCP163C was a Leyland PD2/7 with a Roe sixty-five seater body. It was one of eight similar vehicles delivered new to Halifax Corporation in September and October of 1965. These vehicles were built with teak framed lower decks and alloy upper decks.
On the 1st April 1974 CCP163C, along with the others from the same batch, was transferred to West Yorkshire PTE as fleet number 3063 and survived in service until 1978.

The 2015 annual gathering of the SVBM at Lathalmond in Fife was held on the weekend of the 15th and 16th of August with all the usual exhibits and stalls for enthusiasts keen to enjoy a myriad of vehicles old and new.
Like most years the presentation of buses owned by the Lothian Bus Consortium proved to be as popular as ever but a low attendance could be observed this time, even with the weather delivering blue skies and warm sunshine.
The Scottish Vintage Bus Museum is at the forefront of historic bus restoration and operation in Scotland and houses, on a 49-acre site, about 190 vehicles. Around 160 are buses, most of Scottish origin, in varying levels of condition, from fully restored to dilapidated.
The museum is open every Sunday from Easter until the first Sunday in October. The entrance charge includes a guided tour of the site and the storage sheds in a vintage bus, starting and ending at the Exhibition Hall where visitors can spend as much time as they wish.
The Exhibition Hall houses several vehicles and artefacts, and also the museum cafe and shop. A new roof was fitted recently, that improved the natural light immensely.
In the mid 1950's Edinburgh Corporation Transport undertook a major tram replacement programme and purchased three hundred Leyland PD2 double deckers in three batches, 401 to 500, 501 to 600 and 701 to 800..
Here is OFS 777 working a Service 36 to Saughtonhall, a terminus this bus would frequent regularly for nearly two decades.
At the rear an Alexander Olympian Royale, 1308D (R308 LKS) and this vehicle looks loved and cared for - far better looking and sounding than anything from 'that' company I've seen in current service.

PD2/3 No.136 in Christchurch Road, Near Lansdowne on 19/6/69. A good deal of the trolley wires had not yet been removed giving the strange sensation of expecting a trolleybus to appear at any minute!

I was told on the journey down to Dewsbury bus station from Dewsbury Bus Museum that I was on the first passenger carrying journey of this bus for 46 years, which would make this departure back to the museum it's second such journey. West Riding Automobile Company 640 is a 1948 vintage Leyland Titan PD2/1 with Leyland bodywork which was finally brought back to the road in 2012 after extensive restoration and is owned by the West Riding Omnibus Preservation Society. After withdrawal in 1967 it became driver trainer A13 until 1975 before being accquired for preservation.
