A splendid Manchester Corporation Burlingham bodied Leyland PD2. On a special service between Manchester's museums of Transport and Science and Industry on Saturday 13th September. The bus was being delayed by road closures due to some special event.
This bus was a regular entrant in the Greater Manchester Society's annual Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rallies in the 1990s, and I took this photograph in Heaton Park at the event in 1998. It's an ex-Manchester Corporation 1958 Leyland Titan PD2/34 with a 6-cylinder inline diesel engine with a capacity described by Leyland as 600 cu in which equates to 9.8 litres, although the DVLA record shows it as 9.7 litres. A note in the programme of the event reads as follows:
Leyland PD2/34 /Burlingham, 1958 TNA 520
Entered by John Crankshaw, Meltham, Huddersfield
When 3520 entered service with Manchester Corporation they were experimenting with semi automatic gearboxes to ease the burden for the drivers. However 3520 entered service with a fully automatic box, proving unsuccessful it was soon converted to semi automatic. 3520 is yet another vehicle from the Museum of Transport.
This smart PD2 is from a batch of ten, 161-70(CEO948-57), new to Barrow, in 10/1958. Two are preserved, this and sister 170(CEO957) with the Barrow Transport Group and 165(CEO952) is still in existence, albeit in open-top form with an open-rear staircase. 169 is seen here at Morecambe, opposite the Winter Gardens, and would load passengers for a return trip to Carnforth while at the RVPT Running Day on 29/05/2016. It is making a much welcome re-appearance on the rally circuit after several years in store while awaiting a new engine. The paintwork only needed a good clean and a touch up. © Peter Steel 2016.

This is a photograph that I purchased many decades ago from one of the flea market stalls at a Southend Bus Rally. If anyone has information about the photographer or the photograph I would be grateful if you could add a comment about it. I've not seen this particular photo anywhere else as yet.
HJN 841 had a lightweight Weymann Orion body and was part of Southend Corporation Transport's fleet from new in 1954 until sold on during 1966. Apparently, from what I have read, these lightweight bodies on the PD2 chassis were not a complete success with Southend Corporation Transport in that although the vehicles used less fuel than more standard bodywork the maintenance running cost were higher. They came in to service at the end of the trolleybus era in Southend-On-Sea. A photo of HJN 841 with a trolleybus does exist.
A lowbridge style of body that was not quite low enough for a couple of bridges in the area covered by Southend Corporation Transport.
Back when I was still at school I was always pleased when one of this model of bus arrived at the bus stop as they seemed to look a bit more modern at that time, which of course they weren't.
The photograph shows HJN 841 in Church Road, Southend-On-Sea outside of the Palace Hotel. The brick wall on the left was part of the Ritz Cinema, where The Royals car park is now. I'm struggling to date the photo. The car parked on the left ( I think ) is a Standard Vanguard Phase II made between 1953 and 1956, so that does not help. The cast iron lamp post on the right appears to have had a replacement steel upper section, so I'm thinking the photograph is most likely early 1960's rather than 1950's.
Nick Larkin's ex Hartlepool, Leyland PD2 with rather nice ROE bodywork makes a visit to Bedford in September 1993.
Parked at Bournemouth's "Triangle" terminus on 18/6/69 is No.130, a 1950 Leyland PD2/3 with Weymann body - attractively curved!

The last time I had the privilege of travelling in a bus from this batch was as a Cub Scout when a young lad in short trousers. That 'decker was one of several from this delivery operated at the time by Berresfords of Cheddleton. Our private hire took us from Kidsgrove Scout Hut (the old Vicarage in The Avenue) to Kibblestone Scout Camp near Stone for a Saturday jamboree. ... no seatbelts, very little supervision and an open platform with trolleys (go-carts) lashed to the pole and we all survived!
Originaly this was Central SMT L475 double deck bus. Seen at Birkenhead Park Festival of Transport on 14th September 2008.

North Western Leyland PD2/1 CDB224 on display at Dunbar. A few static shots follow , lined up with the attractive building at their back. This would be the last time I would see the rally here - it was relocated into a field on my next (and last) visit in 1992.

KDT562 was a Leyland PD2/1 with a Leyland H30/26R body. It was new to Doncaster Corporation Transport in September 1951. It was rebodied with a Roe H34/28R body (converted to half-cab) from trolleybus Nos. 354 FWX902 in 1964 and withdrawn in 1970.
To the right rear of the bus are two ladies deep in conversation, one dressed in full Doncaster conductress uniform and the other in very typical dress of the time for ladies of a certain age. Their wonderfully shiny leather shoes are worth of note.
This one found fame in "Seom Mothers DO 'Ave 'Em" when it pulled Michael Crawford on skates. Still around in the west country.

There's little doubt despite my youthful fondness for the eccentricities of the Crossleys and Daimlers, that this batch of Leyland PD2's (337-361) were among the finest postwar buses delivered to Oldham. 351 is seen here At Manchester Cannon St on the lengthy joint service 59 to Shaw, resplendent in fully lined out livery whereas Manchester PD1/3 3127 behind already looks bedraggled with wheel hub ring missing and accumulated crud.
PD2 in Navan depot, still on the road, nearly 22 years later. Would this be Bus Eireann's oldest original vehicle?

Oxford Diecast 1/76 - 76PD2006 - Leyland PD2 - Stratford Blue
Long after the original company disappeared, Stratford Blue is still a famous name in Warwickshire and had been revived by various other operators over the years. Being based in the town, Arden Forest Coaches couldn't turn down the opportunity to purchase a fully-restored genuine Stratford Blue bus for continued preservation. Number 25 (MAC 572) is a 1952 all-Leyland Titan PD2/12 with the inevitable Flowers ale adverts seemingly carried by every bus in the fleet, and will be used mainly for private hire but may make occasional appearances on the Shakespeare Heritage Tour.

Stagecoach London's Barking Garage is 100 years old in 2024. To celebrate this there was an open day, and at the same time the London Bus Museum ran a lot of extra historic buses on routes 62 and 145.

Leyland Titan PD2/1 BHL860 had a Leyland body with conventional H30/26R layout. It was one of twenty-five built for West Riding between 1948 and 1949. Thirteen had highbridge bodies similar to BHL860 and twelve were of low bridge layout seating 53. No 659 is seen at Marshgate terminus in Doncaster where services for Leeds and Pontefract, Wakefield and Askern, Selby and York were to be found before the completion of the Northern bus station, itself now replaced by the Frenchgate interchange.
