Leyland Titan PD2 / 24 - Glasgow Corporation Transportation H61R
New to Glasgow Corporation Transport ( L118 ) during March-1959 . Coming into this fleet on its inception during 1973 .
SGD21 is in Argyle Street , Glasgow , heading for Mosspark on Route 3.
July-1975.
Was Alexanders involved with the bodybuilding of this l batch of Leyland Buses . As they look similar to contemporary Alexander bodies of that time ?
4506WB was a Leyland PD2-30 with a Roe H33-26R body. It was new to the 'A' fleet in January 1958 as Sheffield T.D. 506. It was withdrawn and sold for scrap in March 1973. It was seen during a photo stop with the dereliction and destruction of a once proud industrial landscape and heritage in the background.
I have put August 1972 although I am not sure of the exact date, it may have been earlier that summer. I am fairly sure the tour was organised to mark the imminent withdrawal of these buses.

I may have shared this photo at some time in the past, but here's a higher resolution version of a blurry old negative from 1976 which is now reasonably decent I hope.
I took this shot in the hot summer which was etched into everybody's memory as being a scorcher. Our family camped on a site just off the Torquay by-pass, and as there was insufficient room under canvas, my friend and I slept in the back of our Cortina estate where conditions were less than hospitable at times!
Anyway, here in Exeter city centre wearing Devon General / NBC 'Poppy Red' is a very un-Devon General type bus. The Leyland Titan PD2 with Metro Cammell bodywork, VFJ 996, had been purchased by Exeter Corporation after their Guy phase and had entered the DG fleet as a result of the passing of the former municipal fleet to the Devon General business / NBC subsidiary in 1970.
This Eastern Scottish bus is a 1962 Titan PD2 secondhand from Edinburgh Corporation. Seen leaving St Andrews Sq bus station in Edinburgh. According to the paper label (they seem to have given up on the blind!) its only on an Edinburgh local service. A more usual FLF follows it out. March 1978.
This bus seems to have survived in preservation.
Now this was handy - meeting up with the bus that we were about to go and hunt down ! On our way to find Balhungie Farm, we came across their bus filling up at the local service station, so we waited for it to emerge from the pumps, whereupon the driver made a 3-point (or 5-point) turn to head off in the opposite direction. Job done, anyway.
This former Darwen / Blackburn PD2 / East Lancs of 1959 was already over 20 years old when it arrived at the farm in 1980, and it didn't go for scrap until 1992 - this was our only sighting of it, though. It was possibly held together by a very 'thorough' paint job - if it isn't glass, it's going red !

Former Ashton Corporation Leyland Titan PD" 5444 peeks its nose out of the old Aston garage in the mid seventies with a turquoise VW Beetle to keep it company.
The bus is now preserved and forms part of the Museum of Transport collection at Boyle Street, Manchester.
This 'Bus' batch covers remaining Aug/Sep'68 shots. These Manchester area shots were taken whilst covering the last of BR Steam. Here is Ribble No.1385, a 1955 Leyland PD2/13 - MCW passing under the bridge at Manchester Exchange Station on 4/8/68.
No.6916 now departs the bus stn at Leigh on 3/8/70.
The Leylands were not sporting the fleetname for some reason.
An interesting comparison here between the rear and front entrance MCW bodies (some 5 years apart!) both on PD2/40 chassis. Manchester No.3547 from 1958 heads Salford's No.3032 from 1963 - in Manchester Upper Market Street. 3/8/70.

However, it was purchased by Guernseybus in October 1994 and was rebuilt to H29/23F, entering service with Guernsey registration number 995 in December 1995, then to 47312 by March 1997, before entering preservation with Nash, Weybridge in November 2000 and being reunited with its original registration mark in September 2002. It passed to Ullmer, Enfield for further preservation in August 2004 and is seen wearing pre-war style General livery.

JOJ 180 the last of Birmingham's all Leyland PD2's is waiting time at the Hall Green terminus of the long cross city route from Pheasey Estate. These buses were known as "greenhouses" by the drivers as the large front screen and small cab, could get hot on whichever day summer fell on. 2180 lasted until 1968.
The Baldwin, is a fine 1920's building styled to resemble the superstucture of a ship, perhaps the alternating yellow and red benches are a little over the top though. The Baldwin closed for a time but following refurbishment has re-opened.

Ex Western SMT NCME bodied Leyland PD2 KAG856 seen still in use as berry pickers transport at a soft fruit farm between Dundee and Perth in Summer 1989.
New in 1957 to Western, in 1971 it passed to Alexander's Northern and was last in service with them at Stonehaven before being sold to the farmer in 1977.
Despite the panelled over windows, I was told this one was still used to collect workers from the Dundee area and take them for a days work in the fields!
It was sold by the farmer to a Barnsley Breaker in 1993 before being sold on for preservation and these days is to be seen undergoing restoration at the GVT's Bridgeton Garage in Glasgow.
