Wapping Road School, Bradford 1877 - 2000
Business As Usual
This important and historic school building has fallen into serious disrepair because of a protracted debate over its future between the owners Sphinx Commercial Ltd, and Council planners. An outline planning application for turning the Grade II listed building into apartments was submitted in 2004, before it was sold, but that has not yet been turned into reality. Since being in planning limbo for four years it has been struck by arsonists, thieves and vandals on several occasions. As a result, the school’s slate roof has been gutted and most of its interior features destroyed. It is now on the council’s Listed Building ‘At Risk’ register.
A Remarkable Heritage
Wapping Road School, built in 1877, was a ‘Board School’ under Bradford's very own W.E. Forster's Education Act of 1870.
The school’s distinguished 123-year history saw it play a leading role in the development of state education. More than a century ago, the school created national and international headlines with the help of education campaigners Margaret and Rachel McMillan and their push to improve the lot of children in the state system. Their influence helped bring the country’s first school swimming pool to Wapping Road school and nearby Green Lane School in 1899.
Bradford was a grim place for the poor in the 19th Century, with a lot of extreme poverty. Children suffered in spite of the sacrifice by their parents. Also at this time, children were brought up from London workhouses to work in the mills. This is how the area of Wapping in Bradford got it’s name. Dirt and disease was a problem.
Right up to the early part of this century some children were ‘sewn up’ for the winter – wrapped in flannel which was then sewn into place and not removed until the warm weather came. Some parents thought that this was necessary because there was not enough food to keep a child warm otherwise.

In May 2009 I was 2 weeks with my own car in northwestern France in Brittany, especially at the “Côte de Goël” and the “Côte de Granit Rose”. Starting point for my exploration was a beautiful cottage near Plouha, a charming small town on the beautiful coast. Excursions by car led me among others to: Saint Brieuc, Saint Briac sur Mer, Saint Malo, Paimpol, Lannion, Perros-Guirec, Binic, Saint Quay Portrieux.

A juvenile Brown Thrasher, Toxostoma rufum, ventures out on his own to explore the nature world, yet not too far as they like to be close to thick undergrowth to retreat back into at any sign of trouble.. No worries as mom and dad are close by; however, finding food and worms with his two siblings is a fun adventure. Maybe the comfort of his older siblings around allowed for him to be tolerant of my presence. His baby blue eye will soon turn to a vibrant yellow. And his singing will be heard around the forest as the Brown Thrasher has a massive inventory of variety of songs.

I returned the following night to document my unit some more and to see how the commuinty was reacting to it. When I arrived the piece was gone. I asked some people near by what had happened and I got a lead from a lady that it had been relocated down the block.
Sure enough it had been claimed by a person whom owns what seems to be one of the largest sections of Skid Row. The unit now has a new home on 6th and San Julian. I asked the man how he had moved the 140 pound birdhouse and he basically told me he worked his magic. I asked how he was able to claim it and he told me that he saw the house early the morning after my drop, put his blanket on it - which let the commuinty know that the non-dwelling was his. I asked what he plans to do with the piece and he told me that he wants to use it for storage and later a store, but his friend wants to use it for a brothel.
There are countless ruins of towers, castles and forts, but there is only one Dvigrad – it hadn’t been torn down neither by a military force, nor by the fire, yet, it was abandoned and left in his own doom. It stands as a reminder to passengers and an acquisition to visitors of how an old Istrian medieval town was built back then.
HISTORY
The ruins of the medieval town Dvigrad are the most important and best-known cultural heritage of the Kanfanar municipality. The name ˝Dvigrad˝ (Duo Castra, Due Castelli, Dvegrad) indicates the existence of two parts of the town (Moncastel and Parentin) that have been mentioned since 9th and 10th century as a unique town. The mutual name remained even after the collapse of the castle Parentin, when only Moncastel remained.
Thanks to its remarkable strategic location near water and plenty of fertile ground, that area had been inhabited since the prehistoric period, and by the end of 6th century the first Slavic communities started to settle there. The land seemed neglected, since the government had not been organized yet. At that time the land was cultivated by the Benedictines, who left their traces in the Lim area in the early medieval period. In historical literature Dvigrad was mentioned for the first time in the year 879, when its church fell under the jurisdiction of Akvilanian patriarch instead of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pula. By the end of 13th century the Gothic counts took the possession of Dvigrad, when its ethnical structure gradually started to change, dominated by the Slavic nation despite the bigger immigration of German population.
Constant battles and confrontations marked the upcoming era in Dvigrad. In 1381 Venetians burnt the town and slaughtered its people, and they transferred the power from the basilica of St. Sofia to St. Lorenzo del Pasenatico (St. Lovreč Pazenatički). Venetians took authority over Dvigrad in 1413, when they established the Statute of the Dvigrad commune and annulled the patriarchs rule. Under their authority Dvigrad progressed, but at the end of 15th century the area was stricken by plague, which was soon followed by the malaria.
At the beginning of the 16th century Dvigrad was inhabited by refugees from Dalmatian hinterland and Herzegovina, who were running from the Ottomans. The Uskok war started between Venice and Austria whereupon all surrounding villages were destroyed. The people of Dvigrad started to inhabit those surrounding areas. Around 1630 the town was almost completely abandoned and only very poor families remained there. In 1714 the Dvigrad parish was moved near Kanfanar and this marked the end of Dvigrad.
A WALK THROUGH DVIGRAD
Dvigrad is situated in Limska Draga, in a deep valley spreading from Limska Draga Fjord to Pazin. The settlement is located at an altitude between 150 and 175 metres above the sea level. Today it is possible for visitors to see the ruins of Moncastel (Parentin castle, the other part of Dvigrad, was destroyed to the ground and a plateau is all that remains). The part of the town protected by the first fortification belt is reached through the existing town gate. The other gate, built in the second fortification ring, stands further down the path. That is how the town was entered: door-to-door. Along the big watchtower on the town’s south side, the path leads to the third and final gate, behind which the town centre lies.
The town is enclosed with double defence walls within which more than 200 buildings have been preserved. The central part of the settlement is dominated by St. Sofia church built in several phases. During the oldest, early Christian phase (the second half of 5th century), the church was a single-nave building with a semi-circular apse. The chancel was upgraded over time into having three semi-circular apses and frescoes. During 9th and 10th century a chapel (baptistery) and a bell tower were annexed to the south side, while in 14th century a sacristy was added to the north side. A hexagonal embossed pulpit from the same period was relocated after Dvigrad’s collapse to the Kanfanar’s parish church, where it can be seen today. Among the reliefs adorning the pulpit, the outstanding one is that of St. Sofia, holding a town in each hand. It’s a symbol of Dvigrad and a motif on Kanfanar’s coat of arms.
The most significant buildings in Dvigrad located near the town square are the town palace at the east end and bishop chapel premises at the west end. A line of military garrison facilities is to the west of the basilica. The south-west part of the town used to be an artisan zone, while other parts used to be residential.
THE LEGENDS
THE LEGEND OF THE MONSTRANCE
When Dvigrad was visited during canonical visitations of bishop Tomassini of Novigrad in 1650, it was populated by three families only, and the poorest ones, too. Even the priests had left Dvigrad, only to return daily for the holy mass. Since it was difficult for them to return each day, they decided to move the holy altar sacrament and consecrated hosts from Dvigrad to Kanfanar. Upon their arrival to the church on the following morning, the monstrance with the Holy body was no longer there. They went on a search for the monstrance, finding it shining in the woods at the foot of Dvigrad. When a priest tried to take the monstrance, it started getting away, but stopped after he put on his chasuble. Thus he managed to bring it into the church, whereupon bishop Vaira officially moved the parish centre from Dvigrad to Kanfanar.
THE LEGEND OF HENRY MORGAN’S TREASURE
Henry Morgan was a notorious pirate who fought the Spanish under command of the governor of Jamaica, Thomas Modyford. His accomplishments often exceeded his jurisdiction, the greatest by far being the conquest of Panama. However, looting in Panama broke a peace treaty between Spain and England so Morgan provoked the rage of the British, who began to pursue him. According to the legend, while trying to escape from the English fleet, he was chased deep into the Adriatic Sea, and finally arrived to Limska Draga Fjord. Its meandering ways and furtiveness made an ideal hiding place for both him and his treasure. Upon anchoring ashore the Fjord, he also discovered Dvigrad, which was almost completely abandoned by that time. Therefore he decided to hide his treasure there. Henry Morgan found his new home near Dvigrad, in a village now known under the name of M(o)rgani.

Time cannot measure a life
Never answers the ‘whys’
Only questions
Now when I think of today
I guess it all seems ok
As time taught me lessons
To love for I’ve found
And never look down
Though sometimes I fail to remember
I get angry now and then when I forget myself
I get frightened when I think of me as someone else
Innocence is still within
Evergreen but overgrown
It only happens when I’m here on my own
Here on this island alone
In an ocean I know
I feel like a castaway
So do I sink, do I swim?
Can I fight it within?
The strength that will teach me how
To love for I’ve found
And never look down
Though sometimes I fail to remember
I get angry now and then when I forget myself
I get frightened when I think of me as someone else
Innocence is still within
Evergreen but overgrown
It only happens when I’m here on my own
Time passes by without letting you know
Yesterday doesn’t seem so long ago
And I fear
I fear the unknown
When I’m here on my own
Here on my own

This convertible is owned by Hilmar Born, Herne. I was told that it was driven with the licenseplate "E-CN 4" by the dougther of the former owner. .
I talked with Mr. Born who has an Opel Museum. This convertible is white with red interior. It has the double chrom molding but not the fins. It has many miles on the odometer and 3rd engine installed and is still in good driver quality. It was a realy family car through all the years and after the death of the owner it is gone to the museum of Mr. Born who will keep it in that condition it is now.
Mr. Born is not using the internet and therefor he can not share pictures with us.

The Stavros S Niarchos is a British brig-rigged tall ship owned and operated by the Tall Ships Youth Trust. She is primarily designed to provide young people with the opportunity to undertake voyages as character-building exercises, rather than pure sail-training. She is also used for adult voyages and holidays, which help subsidise the operation of the ship.
In the late 1990s the two schooners (Malcolm Miller and Sir Winston Churchill) then owned by the Tall Ships Youth Trust (then called the Sail Training Association) were showing their age and becoming increasingly expensive to maintain. The hulls for the two new brigs (the Stavros and her sister ship, the Prince William) were obtained half-completed from another project in Germany. These were transported to Appledore Ship Yards in Devon, where they were modified to the TSYT's requirements, and fitted out. She was completed in January 2000. The rig was designed by Michael Willoughby.

Here is a pan of fresh-picked Thanksgiving Day mushrooms sizzling on the stove. It's a mixed pan of Hedgehog Mushrooms (Dentium repandum aka Hydnum repandum), Chanterelles (Cantharellus cibarius), and White Chanterelles (Cantherellus subalbidus). We let them "stew in their own juices". It's really remarkable how much juice these mushrooms make in a hot pan! (Near Susan Creek, North Umpqua River, Oregon, 28 November 2013)
We "dry sauté" them. Clean your mushrooms by trimming them and avoid water if possible - they are like sponges. Then slice them into a pan on high heat with no oil, and they will make their own sauce as the water cooks out of them. Let the juice cook down until it's almost gone, and add a bit of butter or olive oil, salt, and garlic and let it simmer... delicious!

This is a scan of an original kodachrome slide. It was scanned with an Epson Pro V750, and finished up with very minor post processing work in Photoshop. The default size of this image is 2000x1250 pixels.
Clicking on the photo will enlarge it
The original image comes from my slide collection, amassed over the past 40+ years. They are a mixture of my own photographs, and those acquired through trading.
I began uploading scans into this Flickr photostream in 2017 to create an archive for the slides in my collection. Slides in particular suffer from their inability to be displayed easily and enjoyably, so this is just a place to make them more readily viewable.
Comments are welcome.

On this Thursday, December 26th, 2024, we see Hazzard Range Bulletin Publisher Brittany Romero and Editor/Senior Reporter Omar Grant talking with Hazzard Range County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Sergeant Blake Cooper who is working patrol with the school district on Winter/Christmas break, Blake on his way back to the unit after eating lunch at Law and Order Cafe ask how the move is going. Brittany tells him that “ 120 years of items is more than you think “
The Hazzard Range Bulletin is published once a week and has been owned by Romeros since 1919, but dates back to 1899. The Bulletin has only been going by this name since March of this year, see between 1899 and Feb 2024 it was called The Herald.
One of the few big changes Brittany Romero and her partner Lily did after taking over the paper from Lauretta( Lily's mother ) in the fall of 2023 The first major change was changing the name back to what it was called from 1889 to 1899 when its name was changed by Brittany’s great, great grandfather after he bought Bulletin and Mill newspapers and renamed them the Herald after a city he was from on the East Coast paper. They chose Christmas Week to move from the old location at the corner of Second St and Old Mexico Ave ( NM 308 ) which was its home since 1920. Its new home is in the Back Goat Mining Company Building.
The Back Goat Mining Company Building that they bought in March of this year. It was opened in 1890 as the headquarters for The Back Goat Mining Company. In 1911 the building was sold to Henry Williams who in the winter of 1912 was remodeling it into one of the grandest hotels in the state. Well, the fire and flood of late Feb 1912 dashed his plans, He survived, but most of his family did not.
He sold the building to the county and left the state. The county used it until March 1940, when The Works Progress Administration ( WPA ) finished the new courthouse/county offices, it was then sold and reopened by Oct 1941 only a few short months before the Hazzard Range County and the whole USA entered WW2. The Hotel did great business through the 1940s and 1950s, but with mines closing in the 1950s and Interstate 25 bypassing the county in the mid-1960s the Hotel closed. In the 1970s-1990s Rio Grande Mid Bank leased the first floor and the two other floors were unused. In 2000 the bank was bought up by a chain and a new building was built. It was bought by Billy Tack owner of Tack Properties in 2019, but COVID-19 dashed his hopes to turn it into apartments. ,
After remodeling the first floor Romero’s next step is remodeling the next two floors into apartments so maybe Bill’s plan will come true after all, but 4 apartments will add more issues to the limited downtown parking that has plagued downtown Sparta ever since the arrival of automobiles
One of the other changes Romero’s made was buying KRTK radio buying KRTK radio off of G.D. Enterprise in Jan of this year that move happens in March 2025, but luckily it’s right next door so the move won’t be as far.
G.D. Enterprise is owned by George Dallas “G.D. “ Born in 1941 to the late Thomas and Mary Dallas. He took over as president of Dallas Land Company in 1966 age 25, after his father died in a car crash. In 1967 G.D changed the name of the company to G.D. Enterprises. G.D. Enterprises owns many properties and businesses in the county He was elected to the Hazzard Range County Commission in 1990 and reelected 7 more times before not seeking re-election in 2022, He is married to his wife Lucy of 53 years ( married 1971 ) they have three kids Katy was born in 1972, Charlie 1976 -2000 and Clint was Born in 1988 he is a Deputy sheriff and was promoted to Investigator in Sept 2023.
Katy Dallas is the Manager of KRTK Radio. Charlie lost his battle with drug addiction in 2000

ok, so i thought it a cool shot. the blue bike, you know.
i was not that close, actually. the zoom and crop helped :)
as his shirt reads -- "we own the street" must have been the theme
for a serious biker rally. and when the rallies come to
town in little hot springs, arkansas - believe me - they do
own the street. they're everywhere!!
you can hear the collective roar!!
while i'm not a biker chick :) (*gull),
i was inspired to think about what i "own".
not about my stuff. about me.
my almost immediate response?
i own the choice to live joyfully today.
own it!! oh, yeah!!
this is the marionette i had custom made by a lovely man in prague, a certain Aleš Mertl. despite his never having seen me, everyone says she bears a striking resemblance to - you guessed it - me (although, admittedly, i am somewhat lacking in the wing department). i have yet to do any of the photo shoots i had planned when i bought her last summer, but hopefully when i get home from my holidays i will get to work on them.

Sønn av Catharina Maria Møller Lundgreen og Mathias Helmer Lundgreen.
Helmer Lundgreen, født 5. september 1815, fødested Trondheim, Sør-Trøndelag, død 27. januar 1892, dødssted Trondheim. Forretningsmann og politiker. Foreldre: Kjøpmann Mathias Helmer Lundgreen (1775–1831) og Catharina Maria Møller (1786–1881). Gift 25.9.1841 i Orkdal med Anna Christine Roshauw (1.12.1815–24.7.1889), datter av kjøpmann og proprietær Johan Fredrik Roshauw (1784–1871) og Jochumine (“Mina”) Margrethe Testmann (1786–1873). Far til Johan Fredrik Roshauw Lundgreen (1846–1913; se NBL1, bd. 8).
