Barong is a lion-like creature and character in the mythology of Bali, Indonesia. He is the king of the spirits, leader of the hosts of good, and enemy of Rangda, the demon queen and mother of all spirit guarders in the mythological traditions of Bali. The battle between Barong and Rangda is featured in Barong dance to represent the eternal battle between good and evil.

Barong animal mask dance, together with sanghyang dance are considered native Balinese dances, predating Hindu influences. The native Indonesians of Austronesian heritage often has similar mask dances that represent either ancestral or natural spirits; an example is Dayak's Hudoq dance. The term barong derives from the local term bahruang, which today corresponds to Indonesian word beruang which means "bear". It refers to a good spirit, that took the form of an animal as the guardian of forest.

In Balinese mythology, the good spirit is identified as Banas Pati Raja. Banas Pati Raja is the fourth "brother" or spirit child that accompanies a child throughout their life, which is a similar concept to guardian angels. Banas Pati Raja is the spirit which animates Barong. A protector spirit, he is often represented as a lion. The Barong is often portrayed accompanied by two monkeys.

Barong is portrayed as a lion with red head, covered in white thick fur, and wearing gilded jewelry adorned with pieces of mirrors. The shape of lion Barong is somewhat similar to a Pekingese dog. The origins of the Barong are far a back in time and quite uncertain. Its origins could be from animist worship, before Hinduism appeared, when villagers still believed in the supernatural protective power of animals.

CALON ARANG

On the other hand, Rangda is Barong's opposite. While Barong represents good, Rangda represents evil. Rangda is known as a demon queen, the incarnation of Calon Arang, the legendary witch that wreaked havoc in ancient Java during the reign of Airlangga in the 10th century. It is said that Calon Arang was a widow, powerful in black magic, who often damaged farmer's crops and caused disease to come. She had a girl, named Ratna Manggali, who, though beautiful, could not get a husband because people were afraid of her mother. Because of the difficulties faced by her daughter, Calon Arang was angry and she intended to take revenge by kidnapping a young girl. She brought the girl to a temple to be sacrificed to the goddess Durga. The next day, a great flood engulfed the village and many people died. Disease also appeared.

King Airlangga, who had heard of this matter, then asked for his advisor, Empu Bharada, to deal with this problem. Empu Bharada then sent his disciple, Empu Bahula, to be married to Ratna. Both were married with a huge feast that lasted seven days and seven nights, and the situation returned to normal. Calon Arang had a book that contained magic incantations. One day, this book was found by Empu Bahula, who turned it over to Empu Bharada. As soon as Calon Arang knew that the book had been stolen, she became angry and decided to fight Empu Bharada. Without the help of Durga, Calon Arang was defeated. Since she was defeated, the village was safe from the threat of Calon Arang's black magic.

RANGDA

Another version holds that Rangda was actually linked to historical queen Mahendradatta or Gunapriyadharmapatni, a Javanese princess sister of Dharmawangsa of East Javanese Isyana Dynasty of late Medang Kingdom period. She was the queen consort of Balinese king Udayana and Airlangga's own mother. Mahendradatta is known for her devotion to the worship of Durga in Bali. The story goes that Mahendradatta, the mother of Airlangga, was condemned by Airlangga's father because she practiced black magic. After she became a widow (Rangda in old Javanese means: 'widow'), hurt and humiliated, she sought revenge upon her ex-husband's court and whole of his kingdom. She summoned all the evil spirits in the jungle, the leyaks and the demons that caused plague and death in the kingdom. Airlangga face his own mother to save the kingdom. A fight occurred, but she and her black magic troops were so powerful that Airlangga had to ask for the help of spirit king, Barong in order to defeat her. Barong came with Airlangga's soldiers, and the fight ensued. Rangda cast a spell that made Airlangga soldiers all want to kill themselves, pointing their poisoned keris into their own stomachs and chests. In response, Barong cast a spell which caused the soldiers body's to be resistant to the sharp keris. At the end, Barong won, and Rangda ran away.

BARONG DANCE

The lion is the popular one, as it comes from the Gianyar region, where Ubud (the home of tourist's Balinese dance ritual viewing) is located. Within the calon arang, the dance drama in which the Barong appears, the barong responds to Rangda's use of magic to control and kill her to restore balance. In traditional Barong dance performances, he is portrayed in his struggles against Rangda, it is the popular part of Balinese culture. The mythical creature would dance along the street to the calon arang dance. A priest would throw holy water at it.

- The dance opens with two playful monkeys teasing Barong in a peaceful environment.

- The next scene is popularly known as "Keris Dance". The Rangda character appears and wreaks havoc. She casts black magic upon male dancers, who represent Airlangga's soldiers, and orders them to commit suicide. In a trance, these men stab themselves on their chest with their own kris. Meanwhile, Barong and the priest cast protective magic on these men, which makes them invulnerable to sharp objects.

- The dance ends with the final battle between Barong and Rangda, concluding with the victory of Barong over Rangda. Rangda runs away, the evil is defeated, and the celestial order is restored.

The lion barong is one of five traditional Barongs. In Bali each region of the island has its own protective spirit for its forests and lands. Each Barong for each region is modeled after a different animal. They are:

- Barong Ket: lion barong, the most common Barong, it is the symbol of a good spirit.

- Barong Landung: giant barong, the form is similar to Betawi Ondel-ondel

- Barong Celeng: boar barong

- Barong Macan: tiger barong

- Barong Naga: dragon (or serpent) barong

A good friend of mine gave me a gift card to a bookstore. I visited the store and found a neat little pinhole camera kit. I also couldn't resist getting a Wimpy Kid action figure. THANKS, JC! :)

The kit, Create Your Own Pinhole Camera, 2009, ISBN: 1435114302, includes the nice soft-cover book "Adventures with Pinhole and Homemade Cameras", by John Evans.

The kit also includes die-cut cardboard, empty film canister, black photographer's tape, 3 brass shims (0.15, 0.20 pinholes, and a blank one to make your own), and detailed instructions.

All one needs to build the pinhole camera is some white glue, scissors, bulldog clips, and a couple hours.

The MOC (My Own Creation) is restored by LEGO for the Sungnyemum and Seoul old city wall.

The MOC was created 1/35 ratio to match the LEGO mini-figure size by BrickMaster lego club members(café.daum.net/brickmaster). Two BrickMaster designers(Brian Yu & Bong Jae Kim) took a month to finish the project with help of 20 participants. The designer put great effort on expressing the beautiful curves especially unique roof structure and its outstanding color that was common in traditional Korean architecture. Also the designers used actual pictures of the 1890s, customized the hanbok, Korean traditional cloth and accessories, to add realism for the diorama.

Namdaemun, officially known as the Sungnyemun(literally Gate of Exalted Ceremonies), is one of the Eight Gates in the Fortress Wall of HanYang(currently city of Seoul, The Republic of Korea) which surrounded the city in the Joseon Dynasty. The gate is located in Jung-gu between Seoul Station and Seoul City Plaza, with the historic 24-hour Namdaemun market next to the gate.

Sungnyemum was served as a main gate to the city of Hanyang, which was the capital of Joseon Dynasty(1392-1897). The gate is currently designated as the first national treasure of the republic of Korea. It was first built in the last year of King Taejo of Joseon's reign in 1398, and rebuilt in 1447, during the 29th year of King Sejong the Great of Joseon's reign. It was once one of the three major gateways through Seoul's city walls which had a stone circuit of 18.6 kilometres(11.5 miles) and stood up to 6.1 metres(20 ft) high. Seoul City wall was registered the potential candidate for World Heritage sites in 2012.

The MOC is permanent exhibition in the Seoul City Wall Museum(eng.museum.seoul.kr/eng/images/html/org/1172983_649.html).

In the Home we did have our own personal sets of clothes: Best, school and play. Over a time if we had not out grown them and they had started to become a little worn, best became school clothes and school clothes became our play clothes.

Anything outgrown was passed down to a younger child, and we might something get from an older child.

For outside the grounds we were generally smart, for play use within the grounds we could often be seen in odd items.

If you out grew an item there was often a larger size item ready for you, at other times you would have to wait for the Sister to go over to the clothing store or to take you into town.

A temporary item might just be a little big, the wellingtons were ready for an older boy, not really for a young girl who found the foot part too big and the sides too tall, turning them over gave the impression of the only girl in the Home ready to do road works. You might not get the correct item for a month, you just had to wait until Sister had time to sort several of you out at once.

The City Temple is a Nonconformist church on Holborn Viaduct in London. It is the only English Free Church still worshipping in its own building every Sunday in the City of London. The current Minister is Rev Dr Rodney Woods. The church is part of the Thames North Synod of the United Reformed Church and is a member of the Evangelical Alliance.

The City Temple is most famous as the preaching place of the 20th century liberal theologian Leslie Weatherhead. Other notable preachers have included R.J. Campbell, Joseph Fort Newton, Thomas Goodwin and Joseph Parker.

The first church building on the present site was built in 1874. The congregation was founded much earlier; the traditional date is 1640 but some evidence suggests it was founded as early as the 1560s by the Puritans. Destroyed by bombing during the Second World War, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1958.

Early History

The City Temple is widely believed to have been founded by Thomas Goodwin. The exact date of its foundation is unknown, but it is believed to have been around 1640. It is the oldest Nonconformist church in the City of London. Its first meeting-house was located in Anchor Lane. The second minister of the Church was Thomas Harrison, who succeeded Goodwin in 1650, at which time the Church moved to a meeting-house in Lime Street. Harrison's ministry only lasted until 1655. A successor was not appointed until 1658, when Rev. Thomas Mallory was called to pastor the Church. Mallory led the Church during the difficult period that followed the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660. The Church moved several times but after a number of moves it found a more permanent home in the Poultry, Cheapside in 1819.

Following the resignation of Dr James Spence from the pastorate in 1867, the office-bearers of the Poultry Chapel approached Joseph Parker, then pastor at Cavendish Street Chapel, Manchester, with a view to calling him to the pastorate. The first call, in March 1868, he declined. But the call was renewed in June 1869, and this time he accepted. At the same time the Church was looking to relocate from its site in Poultry. The site was sold for 50,000GBP. The Church was then faced with the question of a new site. Parker insisted that the new site would have to be within the City of London, and ultimately the present site on Holborn Viaduct was secured. The Poultry Chapel was closed on 16 June 1872, leaving the congregation temporarily homeless. Until the new church was ready, the congregation met in the great hall of Cannon Street Hotel in the morning, in Exeter Hall in the evening, and in the Presbyterian Church, London Wall, for mid-day services on Thursdays.

The Memorial Stone of the new building, to be called the City Temple, was laid by Dr Thomas Binney on 19 May 1873. The Corporation of the City of London presented a spectacular marble pulpit to the Church. The building was dedicated on 19 May 1874. The building, from its location and size, began to assume the character of a Nonconformist cathedral, and became the most important Congregational pulpit in Britain. Much of this was due to Joseph Parker.

As age began to tell on Parker, Rev. Reginald John Campbell, a Congregational minister in Brighton, was called in 1902 to act as his assistant in the work. Shortly after his agreeing to this arrangement, Dr Parker died suddenly. Parker had made it quite clear that it was his wish for Campbell to be his successor, and so Campbell was called.

While Parker was theologically conservative, publishing an anonymous reply to John Robert Seeley's Ecce Homo under the truculent title Ecce Deus, Campbell was emphatically not. A socialist politically, his theology proved as radical as his politics. Campbell's pastorate began in May 1903 and ended in October 1915. Questions began to be raised about the way that Campbell introduced Biblical criticism into his preaching, questioning the traditional ascription of books, and the origins of the text. As his sermons were published, this brought them to the notice of readers throughout the nation, and beyond.

The theology held by Campbell and a number of his friends came to be known as 'The New Theology'. Campbell decided to answer his critics by issuing a volume entitled simply The New Theology, which laid out his position. Looking back on it, he felt that he had gone too far. "It was much too hastily written, was crude and uncompromising in statement, polemical in spirit, and gave a totally wrong impression of the sermons delivered week by week in the City Temple Pulpit". Campbell himself came to a crisis of faith when several New Theologians began to question the doctrine of the deity, and even the historicity, of Christ.

In October 1915 Campbell preached his last sermon at the City Temple and resigned from the Congregational church; a few days later he was received into the Church of England by Bishop Gore. In October 1916 he was ordained as an Anglican priest.[26] On rejoining the Church of England, and at the request of some old Congregational friends, with whom he remained on good terms, he wrote an account of the development of his thought in A Spiritual Pilgrimage (1916).

Later years

Campbell's successor was theologically almost as radical as he had been. Though Joseph Fort Newton had been educated at Louisville's Southern Baptist Seminary, he was a theological liberal. Newton had been asked to the City Temple at first as a stop-gap after Campbell's resignation. What was controversial about Newton was not his theology, or even the fact that he was of a Baptist background but the fact that he was an American. As he remarked, it seemed that the view of many was that "It was perfectly right for an English preacher to go to an American Church, but absurd for an American preacher to go to an English Church". While the congregation decided to call Newton, the deacons opposed him, an action that finally led to the deacons being abolished and Newton going to London.

Newton found the burden of the City Temple too much for one man, and he asked for an assistant. Surprisingly the assistant finally called was a woman, Miss A. Maude Royden. She was an Anglican, but was prohibited from preaching by the Church of England. In the free atmosphere on the City Temple, however, she was welcomed by the Church, if not by the press.

Newton ministered at the City Temple through the First World War, returning to America in 1919. He was succeeded by F. W. Norwood, an Australian Baptist.

When Norwood left the City Temple in 1935, there was some uncertainty over where the next pastor should come from. Some argued that, since the Congregational Church had not had a Congregationalist pastor since 1915, when Campbell left, they should call a minister from within their own denomination. In the event, the man called was a Methodist minister, then stationed in Leeds, Rev. Leslie Weatherhead. He served there from 1936 until his retirement in 1960.

During The Blitz, the City Temple was "gutted by fire from incendiary bombs dropped from enemy aeroplanes". Weatherhead was able to continue his ministry thanks to the nearby St Sepulchre-without-Newgate church. After the war, Weatherhead raised the funds to rebuild the City Temple, largely from John D. Rockefeller, Jr.. The re-built City Temple was opened in the presence of the Queen Mother in 1958. In 1960, Weatherhead retired.

Grand Isle, Vermont, USA • Restored hotel, now owned and operated as a conference & retreat center (and stunning wedding site) by The Preservation Trust of Vermont.

1903-1956: The Island Villa Hotel: The Briggs family of Burlington purchased Robinson's Point and built the main building as a hotel in 1903. Embodying true Turn-of-the-Century charm, the property was named the Island Villa Hotel and soon became a spot frequented by the "who's who" of the Northeast. The Island Villa had the rare (for the times) luxuries of electricity and running water, and had the good fortune to emerge contemporaneously with the Rutland Railroad on the island. These factors proved the perfect complements to the beautiful property, and this Vermont getaway became an irresistible lure for city folk from Philadelphia, Boston, New York and more. Our summer camps provided those with children a place to deposit them, thought they were more than welcome at the hotel.

1957-1993: Camp Marycrest: The Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic order, purchased the property in 1956 and opened it as a summer camp for girls in the summer of 1957.

Many of the sisters from the order taught in the Burlington area catholic schools, and would spend summers as instructors at the camp. Marycrest was one of the Sisters' leading ministries and was seen as a way to offer a camp experience primarily to Vermont girls. Marycrest hosted thousands of young girls in their summer programs from 1957 through 1993, many of whom would not have been financially able to attend summer camp.

The Sisters of Mercy came to realize in 1992 that they could no longer support the property. Marycrest was then purchased by a charitable buyer in 1996 who later donated it to the Preservation Trust of Vermont.

1998: The Preservation of a Treasure: The property and buildings, which now comprise the Grand Isle Lake House, were donated as a generous gift by Bob and Cindy Hoehl to the Preservation Trust of Vermont in 1997. In early 1998, the process of restoring the facility began. …

2006: The Lake House Today: A Place for Everyone – The Trust has teamed up with Bev Watson, a Burlington restaurateur and inn owner, to run the day-to-day operations. The rehabilitation is now partially complete, and the hotel is now used for retreats and training with special emphasis on nonprofit users, and for family gatherings and weddings.  Visit the Grand Isle Lake House Web Site for more information.
