Family-owned-and-operated bakery, located just 50 miles south of Dallas, Texas, has been baking the world-famous DeLuxe Fruitcake for over 110 years.
The Collin Street Bakery Story
For true fruitcake connoisseurs, 1896 was a banner year for it marked the first year of the Original DeLuxe, "that famous Corsicana, Texas Fruitcake." The grand-tasting DeLuxe, whose recipe had traveled 6,000 miles from Wiesbaden, Germany, was introduced to this little Texas town by a gentle German baker named August Weidmann. And if history had left the rest to Gus, this cake's reputation might never have got past the city limits. Happily, though, history brought him a wealthy partner and master salesman named Tom McElwee.
The shy, perfectionist Gus Weidmann ran his little kitchen in this newly formed Collin Street Bakery and made ready for the busy Christmas seasons. At the same time, Tom McElwee was sending out letters, making sales trips, and lining up an ever-growing list of Bakery customers. They made a nice team and enjoyed such success that their once anonymous DeLuxe Texas Fruitcake and Pecan Cake became a delicacy to be sought after by folks from every corner of the globe.

A good friend of mine gave me a gift card to a bookstore. I visited the store and found a neat little pinhole camera kit. I also couldn't resist getting a Wimpy Kid action figure. THANKS, JC! :)
The kit, Create Your Own Pinhole Camera, 2009, ISBN: 1435114302, includes the nice soft-cover book "Adventures with Pinhole and Homemade Cameras", by John Evans.
The kit also includes die-cut cardboard, empty film canister, black photographer's tape, 3 brass shims (0.15, 0.20 pinholes, and a blank one to make your own), and detailed instructions.
All one needs to build the pinhole camera is some white glue, scissors, bulldog clips, and a couple hours.

An incomplete castle hand-built by one man, and later blessed by the Lord. Themed rooms include a throne room and dungeon. The edifice dominates the scenery on the land owned by Banks on Lee Shirley Road in Greenback. The structure is over 20 feet high and around 200 feet long.

The work on the Fortress began in December 1993. Banks, known by family and friends as the “Castle Man,” said he started the endeavor out of pride. “I was selfish and built the castle for myself,” he said. “In 2003, I discovered I had been wrong. God wanted me to build the Fortress for (divine) reasons. The construction is His will.”
Bobby Long, 70, is a friend to Banks. Both graduated from Lanier High School in 1964. Long lost contact with Banks until he began looking for him for the 50-year high school reunion in 2014. “I found Junior, and we have renewed our friendship,” Long said. “I asked Junior about the blueprints for the Fortress. He told me the plans were from the Almighty.”

Long helps Banks by providing supplies for the construction of the Fortress. “I don’t do any work on the building, but I do get supplies such as brick, cement and block,” Long said. “The castle is very sturdy and should stand for years.”
Stone crosses can be found throughout the exterior and interior of the castle. Several walkways of the Fortress have arrowheads fused within brick and/or stone. Three wooden crosses are outside, beside the pet cemetery. Over 10 crosses mark the graves. “Most of the animals buried in the pet cemetery were pets,” Banks said.
The circular room of the castle is adorned with blue, painted crosses on the wall. A wooden stairway spirals to the second floor, which is still under construction. “I keep the stairway blocked off,” Banks said. “It is coming along, but there are spots on the second level that a person could fall through if they weren’t careful.”
Over 50 images in the form of silhouettes adorn the overall structure of the Fortress. Banks said he is not responsible for the silhouettes. “The (silhouette) images have appeared at various times over the years,” he said. “The images don’t have lines, and all of my art has lines. I believe the images are holy signs and messages.”
There are a few areas which contrast the overall theme of the castle, such as the room known as the Hell Room. The room has chains and whips on the wall, accompanied by the silhouette of some sort of creature. There is also a wall on the castle’s exterior covered with Egyptian hieroglyphs. “The (Egyptian wall) has been here for a while, but I just recently started repainting and adding to it,” Banks said. “Many visitors have given positive comments about the hieroglyphs. It isn’t something they see on a daily basis.”
Banks said the castle has spirits. “I think my brother, Randal, is here sometimes,” Banks said. “Randal died years ago. I put his chess set in one of the rooms — it has a stone table and two stone chairs. I think his spirit visits the room. I also believe the spirit of God is always (covering) the Fortress.”
The castle is open to the public during the day, yet is off limits at night. “The castle is always under construction,” Banks said. “It is easy to stumble around in the dark on the inside and outside of the Fortress. I don’t allow night visits for the sake of safety.”
Vandalism is another reason the castle is closed after dusk. “Three months ago stone crosses in front of the castle were knocked over,” Banks said. “Now I rope the castle off at night to keep vandals away.”
The Fortress receives hundreds of visitors each year. “People come from all over the world to see the Fortress of Faith,” Banks said. “They sign a visitor’s logbook I have inside. It is nice to see that so many people make the time to visit the castle.”
Banks is recovering from eye surgery. Presently, he is not doing any physical labor with the construction of the Fortress. However, he does have a few helping hands. “I have grandchildren, and they are doing the heavy lifting right now,” Banks said. “As soon as I heal, I will get back to the task of building the castle.”

These little cardboard boxes were made by me as gifts to my daughter's preschool teachers last year.
The Chrysler Building at Lexington and 42nd St is the iconic Art Deco skyscraper, and my own favorite. This view shows off the stainless steel "gargoyles" at the 31st floor level. They're modeled after the radiator cap of the 1929 Chrysler. You can also see the mosaic cars that race all around the 31st floor.

Rifali Chandra’s The Spring Summer 2015 Edenfista collection was based on theme of dreamy fable inspired from the Moroccan intricacy and sophistication. The incredible Morocco has Quirky and Fanciful style that evolves throughout the Making and brings joyous visual expressions with its subtle details. This tale has an emotional yet bold style of illustrating its elegance. Sanya Garg’s Ilkbahar was a mirror of spring culture- fresh, bright, romantic and intricate. The glimpse of dull gold and bright hues gives it a sense of charm and elegance. Paneri Gosar’s collection was a reflection of indo western wears and was all about trendy, classy and occasional wear in the colors of white, pinks and gold. Vanica chhabra’s collection was inspired by Delhi culture, trends and ghantaghar. It was a vibrant collection and quite unique in its own way. Govinda Raju’s collection was an inspiration from KAMASUTRA on KHAJURAHOO TEMPLES. Sweta Kedia’s break the rules is a collection inspired by uniforms across all walks of life: school, army, air hostesses, butlers and navy. Uniforms have always provoked a sense of authority, power and style. Rahul Kapoor "Fuelled by fusion" RAHUL KAPOOR ushers you to his new spring sunmer 2015 collection 'REDIFINING ROYALTY '. Neha Yadav’s collection was inspired by modern sensibilities and cosmopoltitan styling to match the interplay of form, surface texturing and cuts, bringing together a cognitive mix of contemporary and conventional ensembles.

Grand Isle, Vermont, USA • Restored hotel, now owned and operated as a conference & retreat center (and stunning wedding site) by The Preservation Trust of Vermont.
1903-1956: The Island Villa Hotel: The Briggs family of Burlington purchased Robinson's Point and built the main building as a hotel in 1903. Embodying true Turn-of-the-Century charm, the property was named the Island Villa Hotel and soon became a spot frequented by the "who's who" of the Northeast. The Island Villa had the rare (for the times) luxuries of electricity and running water, and had the good fortune to emerge contemporaneously with the Rutland Railroad on the island. These factors proved the perfect complements to the beautiful property, and this Vermont getaway became an irresistible lure for city folk from Philadelphia, Boston, New York and more. Our summer camps provided those with children a place to deposit them, thought they were more than welcome at the hotel.
1957-1993: Camp Marycrest: The Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic order, purchased the property in 1956 and opened it as a summer camp for girls in the summer of 1957.
Many of the sisters from the order taught in the Burlington area catholic schools, and would spend summers as instructors at the camp. Marycrest was one of the Sisters' leading ministries and was seen as a way to offer a camp experience primarily to Vermont girls. Marycrest hosted thousands of young girls in their summer programs from 1957 through 1993, many of whom would not have been financially able to attend summer camp.
The Sisters of Mercy came to realize in 1992 that they could no longer support the property. Marycrest was then purchased by a charitable buyer in 1996 who later donated it to the Preservation Trust of Vermont.
1998: The Preservation of a Treasure: The property and buildings, which now comprise the Grand Isle Lake House, were donated as a generous gift by Bob and Cindy Hoehl to the Preservation Trust of Vermont in 1997. In early 1998, the process of restoring the facility began. …
2006: The Lake House Today: A Place for Everyone – The Trust has teamed up with Bev Watson, a Burlington restaurateur and inn owner, to run the day-to-day operations. The first person to own a bicycle and latter a car in western province was King Nabongo Mumia.
The second person to own a car and latter a bus company in the province was Elijah Ukiru. As for present day Vihiga County, Ukiru was the first person on both accounts.
Elijah Ukiru was already driving a car in the 1940's when the number of Africans who owned a car in Kenya was not more than ten.
While Odinga Oginga was mobilising funds from his Luo Community to start a bus company, Ukiru was the main shareholder in Andimi Bus Company that operated in present day Vihiga, Kakamega, Kisumu, Kisii and Migori Counties.
Today we have a significant population of fourth generation Maragoli who reside in Uriri Constituency in Migori, and in Lugari Constituency in Kakamega County. Their grandfathers landed in the area in the 1940's, 1950's and early 1960's on an Andimi Bus.
Elijah Ukiru was my maternal grandfather who loved me dearly. In the mid-1960's, as a child of less than 10 years, I would jump on the bus to visit places whenever I felt like. The bus company collapsed a few years after the death of Ukiru in the year 1966.
He had very good words for me the day before he died.

Anthony Lakes Ski Area in Baker County Oregon
This Baker County owned ski resort is arguably the best-kept powder secret in the in Oregon. Carnegie Steel, owned by the guru Andrew Carnegie, was bought out by J.P. Morgan and his company of United States Steel in 1901 for his asking price of $400 million (roughly worth $8,628,000,000 Billion dollars in 2012). Carnegie Steel eventually was changed to Carnegie-Illinois in 1936 before later becoming absorbed under the United States Steel name. These rails here, came from the E.T. (Edgar Thomson Plant) in nearby Braddock, PA. The plant was built in 1875, and is still in operation today in 2012. Built 1917. Andrew Carnegie died August 11, 1919, giving most of his wealth and riches away to hospitals, libraries and more near his death. In the year 1943, U.S. Steel employed 342,000 people, with a large percentage of that coming from the Mon Valley and Pittsburgh area alone. As of 2000, they employed 52,000 people. Today all that remains is 3 U.S. Steel Plants active in the entire valley ( and are just about the only operating plants in the entire valley, with the exception of the Koppers owned Monessen Coke Plant. ) Even the city this photo was taken in, Versailles, Pennsylvania's very own plant Christy Park Steel Mill (Part of U.S. Steel's National Tube Branch) is not the same anymore. Back in WW2 and other various wars until an unknown date, made artillery shells for the war. Today they make pressurized valves. What is a ghost to today, may just actually be a ghost that plays a roll in our everyday modern world, after all.

Come make your own gadget, robot or wearable art with Arduino at Tam Makers!
We hosted a number of maker classes and workshops for adults and teens in our makerspace at Tam High School. During our Arduino 101 classes and ‘You Can Make It’ workshops, participants learned to build new projects using the popular Arduino boards, with guidance from our staff and other community members.
Many of our members are experienced makers, who are happy to share what they know. Some of the cool maker projects they built together include a graceful robot spider, an eagle god with creepy eyes, an Arduino-powered garage opener, a Wifi server on a chip, and more.
If you are interested in creating your own maker project with the help of others, join our Maker Clubs on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9pm in the woodshop at Tam High School in Mill Valley.
