Adding my own little Winter wonderland to Flickr, I love it when come Winter in the northern hemisphere Flickr start to fill up with snowy white photos...they are so beautiful! Today I brought out my frozen blueberries to shoot, I was pleasantly surprised when they started to frost over as they defrosted. Unfortunately I'm a day late for the Macro Monday's fruit theme.

Wonderful old Utrecht city bus, no power steering, semi autimatic, power brakes, great festival public, the other terminus was the old Van Nelle factory, now a classified building, me driving. I used to go to school with cars like this.

HN Rail owned, GBRf operated 08818 'Molly' gives it some grunt as it shunt forms the 6L48 service to Dagenham. In the background the cab of 08502 can be seen, this bringing the first portion of the train (visible to the right) out before retiring to the sidings. 66722 'Sir Edward Watkin' is also visible in the background and will form the 6L48 late afternoon departure.

Why do I love becoming a woman? A question I often ask myself as well as hearing from others who know of my liking to take ion a female persona. Do I regret being a man that desires to dress as a woman? Where is it all going to end up?
Questions, questions…
I accept we all have our own motivations and aspirations for expressing our desire to dress as women and which can also be a desire to inhabit a female persona. I have my personal feelings, emotional needs and ambitions for my female alter-ego which are not necessarily a reflection of how others feel about their own situation. For me, I have a need to actually pass as a woman and be perceived as being female when I cross-dress. I will admit to frustration over the years through a combination of my lack of skills in the art of male to female transformation, limits imposed by my physicality (being male) and I’m sure well meant advice telling me to forget passing and just enjoy it. To forget passing undermines everything that motivates my female side. When I become Helene I want to be a woman not simply a man dressed up. I dream of having a feminine appearance and emotionally being female rather than male. If this all sounds like serious transexual characteristics and an urgent need to start transition then let me say with utter certainty that is not what I want.
I don’t buy into the simplistic view that if you have a powerful desire to be a woman then the only answer is to transition. Nothing is that straightforward that you can boil it down to a one or the other answer. There exists a huge area of crossover. I genuinely like my male life and like being me. The idea of killing off my male self and only existing as a woman is not something I want. If I were to indulge in being simplistic, I could say I want it all, to be both a man and a woman. However, I know, especially now I am sixty years of age, how my feelings operate in terms of my transgender feelings. I can see now I have real intense moments of wanting to be female and this are all consuming when they occur. I do understand though, that these intense desires being too diminish and I am happy to return to being a man again. I would say that is reasonably creative cut as to why transitioning would not be a happy course of action for me.
I doubt I am alone in having these intense moments of wanting to be female forever but knowing they will at some point ease off. I will admit that it is these feelings that drive me to want to actually look convincingly female and to behave as a female both physically and emotionally when I transform myself from a man into a woman. It’s a fundamental part of my being and needs to be set free now and again.
In recent months my focus and aspirations for my female self has shifted towards passing myself off in a believable way as being a real woman. I find myself observing real women more and more and noting their choices in clothing, footwear and make-up. I also observe what men find attractive in women they encounter My goal is to be accomplished enough to be perceived as being a female and I too want to behave and respond as a female with any social interactions be that shopping, a polite hell, having a coffee in a cafe, visiting a gallery, having a meal and even creating some intrigue and desire with men. In short my aim for the few hours I take on my female persona I want o be able to cease being a man in every way and exist as a female.
Having outlined my feelings and aspirations does that answer any of the questions I began this narrative with? I think it partly addresses them. I do have many regrets about being a man that dresses as a woman. I kind of regret I never accepted this part of myself throughout my life. It caused me a lot of angst and made me a shy not very sociable person. I think I was far more transexual as a teenager and young man than I am now. Once I settled into a career I liked and a relationship that means more to me than my own inner desires and then had a family, everything took on a different level of contentment and also responsibility. My wife and family far outweigh my lifelong desire to become female, I would hate to cause any disruption to that. I do regret my cowardice as a young person not to act on my inner feelings in regard to desiring to be female. I chose the easy option of denial and suppression. Inevitably, I failed in that attempt at self control and had to come out as being transgender at the age of forty one. I do have regrets that certain people I came out to have used it against me, I misjudged their trust. I have regrets I don’t have breasts, a female body and look female, I dream of being feminine. Im not feminine though so this does distress me somewhat and I regret the lack of femininity.
Despite the regrets, they are not enough to crush me as I do enjoy my life, it’s an aspect I can handle, I know it is down to my own inaction that these regrets exist. I try to not let them intrude as I do enjoy my rare moments as a woman and find each opportunity incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.
Recently I was asked by a female friend where all of this was going to end up? It really made me think and I wanted to answer as honestly as I could. At the moment I think in the next few years I will start to spend time out and about as a woman not a man. This is a reflection of where I am going emotionally and also I do have personal ambitions in regard to the challenge of existing as a (part-time) woman. I want to do it well and never be considered as a man when I head out as a woman. I therefore see an increase in this kind of activity and a change in my wardrobe, hair and make-up to reflect this. I did consider what would occur if I were single. I don’t want to be single but it was a hypothetical scenario I felt I should muse over. I believe I would likely spend a lot more time as my female self if I were single but I’m pretty certain I would not transition. I still like my male self so I see such a scenario as being a less inhibited opportunity to fully express myself more freely.
It has taken me pretty much fifty years to accept myself and I don’t feel I’m still quite there yet, there is a lot more self acceptance I need to embrace. I think it’s my fear of damaging my relationship with my wife and family, who all know I have a female alter-ego, that prevents me from pushing things further. Al I can say is I do feel a lot more at ease with my inner female self than I did in past decades.

It is said that this 180 ft tall giant, chalked into the ground, is thought to be a depiction of the Greek god Hercules - the god with superhuman strength. Others believe he was created as a pagan idol during the Iron Age, an ancient symbol of fertility, and local folklore has long held him to be a fertility aid.
The giant is located just outside the small village of Cerne Abbas in Dorset, and you can get some of the best views of it from the visitor car park. It is protected by the National Trust and you can no longer walk onto the site of the chalk carving, but there is a nice circular walk that takes you very close!

Still looking remarkably good 23 (ugh...) years post-merger, is the CNW 178323. This PS 4750 was built in March '80 (class CH 100-226), and when I photographed it, the car had been set out in Union Pacific's yard in Lawrence, KS.

Every year, the autonomous administration of the region of Castilla y León deploys one or more snow-clearing trucks in the town of Riaza, due to the heavy snowfall that can accumulate in this area, close to the Ayllón mountain range.
The population of Riaza in 2024 was 2,144 people.
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the foreign population, especially of Bulgarian origin.

That's exactly what this car is. The Grohsbach Eigenbau is the sole product of Alfred Grahsbach who decided to build his own microcar. It was far from a toy and included various patents, like four wheeled steering and a motorbike type set of handlebars that could be used to control the car. With a top speed of 60mph and a 248cc engine that developed 12hp it proved to be his daily use vehicle into the 1960's.
Built in 1953 at his home in Tamm, West Germany.
The car in the background is a very early post war car built for invalids. I understand that only one leg was required to drive it so it proved popular with amputees.

Edgar Allan Poe knew what he was doing when he used the Raven instead of some other bird to croak out “nevermore” in his famous poem. The Raven has long been associated with death and dark omens, but the real bird is somewhat of a mystery. Unlike its smaller cousin the crow, not a lot has been written about this remarkable bird.
Here are 10 fascinating facts about Ravens.
1. Ravens are one of the smartest animals.
When it comes to intelligence, these birds rate up there with chimpanzees and dolphins. In one logic test, the Raven had to get a hanging piece of food by pulling up a bit of the string, anchoring it with its claw, and repeating until the food was in reach. Many Ravens got the food on the first try, some within 30 seconds. In the wild, Ravens have pushed rocks on people to keep them from climbing to their nests, stolen fish by pulling a fishermen’s line out of ice holes, and played dead beside a beaver carcass to scare other Ravens away from a delicious feast.
If a Raven knows another Raven is watching it hide its food, it will pretend to put the food in one place while really hiding it in another. Since the other Ravens are smart too, this only works sometimes.
2. Ravens can imitate human speech.
In captivity, Ravens can learn to talk better than some parrots. They also mimic other noises, like car engines, toilets flushing, and animal and birdcalls. Ravens have been known to imitate wolves or foxes to attract them to carcasses that the Raven isn’t capable of breaking open. When the wolf is done eating, the Raven gets the leftovers.
3. Europeans often saw Ravens as evil in disguise.
Many European cultures took one look at this large black bird with an intense gaze and thought it was evil in the flesh … er, feather. In France, people believed Ravens were the souls of wicked priests, while crows were wicked nuns. In Germany, Ravens were the incarnation of damned souls or sometimes Satan himself. In Sweden, Ravens that croaked at night were thought to be the souls of murdered people who didn’t have proper Christian burials. And in Denmark, people believed that night Ravens were exorcized spirits, and you’d better not look up at them in case there was a hole in the bird’s wing, because you might look through the hole and turn into a Raven yourself.
4. Ravens have been featured in many myths.
Cultures from Tibet to Greece have seen the Raven as a messenger for the gods. Celtic goddesses of warfare often took the form of Ravens during battles. The Viking god, Odin, had two Ravens, Hugin (thought) and Munin (memory), which flew around the world every day and reported back to Odin every night about what they saw. The Chinese said Ravens caused bad weather in the forests to warn people that the gods were going to pass by. And some Native American tribes worshipped the Raven as a deity in and of itself. Called simply Raven, he is described as a sly trickster who is involved in the creation of the world.
5. Ravens are extremely playful.
The Native Americans weren’t far off about the Raven’s mischievous nature. They have been observed in Alaska and Canada using snow-covered roofs as slides. In Maine, they have been seen rolling down snowy hills. They often play keep-away with other animals like wolves, otters, and dogs. Ravens even make toys—a rare animal behaviour—by using sticks, pinecones, golf balls, or rocks to play with each other or by themselves. And sometimes they just taunt or mock other creatures because it’s funny.
6. Ravens do weird things with ants.
They lie in anthills and roll around so the ants swarm on them, or they chew the ants up and rub their guts on their feathers. The scientific name for this is called “anting.” Songbirds, crows, and jays do it too. The behaviour is not well understood; theories range from the ants acting as an insecticide and fungicide for the bird to ant secretion soothing a moulting bird’s skin to the whole performance being a mild addiction. One thing seems clear, though: anting feels great if you’re a bird.
7. Ravens use “hand” gestures.
It turns out that Ravens make “very sophisticated nonvocal signals,” according to researchers. In other words, they gesture to communicate. A study in Austria found that Ravens point with their beaks to indicate an object to another bird, just as we do with our fingers. They also hold up an object to get another bird’s attention. This is the first time researchers have observed naturally occurring gestures in any animal other than primates.
8. Ravens are adaptable.
Evolutionarily speaking, the deck is stacked in the Raven’s favour. They can live in a variety of habitats, from snow to desert to mountains to forests. They are scavengers with a huge diet that includes fish, meat, seeds, fruit, carrion, and garbage. They are not above tricking animals out of their food—one Raven will distract the other animal, for example, and the other will steal its food. They have few predators and live a long time: 17 years in the wild and up to 40 years in captivity.
9. Ravens show empathy for each other.
Despite their mischievous nature, Ravens seem capable of feeling empathy. When a Raven’s friend loses in a fight, they will seem to console the losing bird. They also remember birds they like and will respond in a friendly way to certain birds for at least three years after seeing them. (They also respond negatively to enemies and suspiciously to strange Ravens.) Although a flock of Ravens is called an “unkindness,” the birds appear to be anything but.
10. Ravens roam around in teenage gangs.
Ravens mate for life and live in pairs in a fixed territory. When their children reach adolescence, they leave home and join gangs, like every human mother’s worst nightmare. These flocks of young birds live and eat together until they mate and pair off. Interestingly, living among teenagers seems to be stressful for the Raven. Scientists have found higher levels of stress hormones in teenage Raven droppings than in the droppings of mated adults. It’s never easy being a teenage rebel.

Just touched down in Singapore from Perth earlier this morning and spent the entire day sleeping because whew, tired. The day I flew there were tornado warnings and bad storms, but the weather cleared up the week after. We were in Fremantle, staying in a hotel right next to the harbour so this was taken with Auri sitting on the breakwater and that's the sea behind her (not that you can tell, really). :D
This is the first time I tried out HDR photog so comments would be lovely! I am going to catch up on comments/photos/MEMES next week (so many people tagged me for the you and your doll meme I don't even remember who anymore) so apologies for the comments-spam. I spoke to the owner of this 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air 4-door hardtop. He said that he has owned this car since his high school days, about 50 years' time which means that the car was definitely an old, used one about 17 years old when he acquired it. The running gear underneath has been modernized, he mentioned.

In the great house a gathering of the fair and the worthy is scheduled, befitting the stately surroundings.
Our presentation is a traditional tribute to the glorious Spring that returns, as ever, to our shores and enlivens our countryside.
Among the company, one of the ladies, like others of her wont, has been so good as to assemble her very best ‘Easter Parade’ costume, with naturally a floral basket to match.
Lace yoke, exceptionally full sleeves and fancy cuffs! A generously cut and flounced skirt lies below! And a delightful ‘petit chapeau’ for the occasion!
As has been said many times, an outfit celebrating all the values of past centuries! (Rest assured that the lady will not be resting on her laurels, but readying herself to serve a mixed repast to the assembled gathering, as and when required!)

The Hialeah Park Race Track (also known as the Miami Jockey Club or Hialeah Race Track or Hialeah Park) is a historic racetrack in Hialeah, Florida. Its site covers 40 square blocks of central-east side Hialeah from Palm Avenue east to East 4th Avenue, and from East 22nd Street on the south to East 32nd Street on the north. On March 5, 1979, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Another listing for it was added in 1988. The Hialeah Park Race Track is served by the Miami Metrorail at the Hialeah Station at Palm Avenue and East 21st Street.
The Hialeah Park Race Track is one of the oldest existing recreational facilities in southern Florida. Originally opened in 1922 by aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss and his partner, Missouri cattleman James H. Bright, as part of their development of the town of Hialeah, Florida, Hialeah Park opened as a greyhound racing track operated by the Miami Kennel Club. The Miami Jockey Club launched Hialeah's Thoroughbred horse racing track on January 25, 1925. The facility was severely damaged by the 1926 hurricane and in 1930 was sold to Philadelphia horseman Joseph E. Widener. With Kentucky horseman Col. Edward R. Bradley as an investor, Widener hired architect Lester W. Geisler to design a complete new grandstand and Renaissance Revival clubhouse facilities along with landscaped gardens of native flora and fauna and a lake in the infield that Widener stocked with flamingos. Hailed as one of the most beautiful racetracks in the world, Hialeah Park officially opened on January 14, 1932. An Australian totalisator for accepting parimutuel betting was the first to be installed in America. The park became so famous for its flamingo flocks that it has been officially designated a sanctuary for the American Flamingo by the Audubon Society.
In 1987, the horse-racing movie Let It Ride, with Richard Dreyfuss, Terri Garr, and Jennifer Tilly, had most of its principal film photography shot at Hialeah Park. Hialeah Park also made an appearance in Public Enemies but most scenes were shot in the Midwest. The Champ (1979) with Jon Voight, Faye Dunaway and Ricky Schroder filmed scenes on Flamingo Day, 3/4/78.
Hialeah Park Racetrack was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 2, 1979. On January 12, 1988, the property was determined eligible for designation as a National Historic Landmark by the Secretary of the Interior.
In 2001, Hialeah Park stopped hosting racing after a change in state law kept it from having exclusive dates in its competition with Gulfstream Park and Calder Race Course. Consequently, owner John Brunetti closed Hialeah Park to the public. The filly Cheeky Miss won the last thoroughbred race run at Hialeah on May 22, 2001. Among the races the track hosted was the appropriately named Flamingo Stakes, an important stepping stone to the Kentucky Derby for 3-year-old horses, and the once prestigious Widener Handicap, a major race for horses four years and older that was the East Coast counterpart to the Santa Anita Handicap in California. n 2004, the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering revoked Hialeah's thoroughbred permit because it did not hold races for the previous two years. As of 2013, its facilities remain intact except for the stables, which were demolished in early 2007.[3] In 2006, the abandoned Hialeah Park site was considered to be a possible location for a new Florida Marlins Ballpark.
On March 2009, it was announced that track owner John Brunetti was awarded a racing permit. Design firm EwingCole was selected to develop a master plan for renovation and further development, including a new casino. A $40–$90 million restoration project was begun in mid-2009.
On May 7, 2009 the Florida legislature agreed to a deal with the Seminole Tribe of Florida that allowed Hialeah Park to operate slot machines and run Quarter Horse races.[6] The historic racetrack reopened on November 28, 2009 but only for quarter horse races. The park installed slot machines in January 2010 as part of a deal to allow for two calendar seasons of racing. The races ran until February 2, 2010. Only a portion of the park has been restored and an additional $30 million will be needed to complete this first phase of the project. The full transformation was expected to cost $1 billion since the plan included a complete redevelopment of the surrounding area including the construction of an entertainment complex to include a hotel, restaurants, casinos, stores and a theater. On June 2010 concerns were raised over the preservation of Hialeah Park's historical status as the planned development threatened to hurt Hialeah Park's potential as a National Historic Landmark.
On August 14, 2013, Brunetti opened a new casino at Hialeah Park and continues to host winter Quarter Horse racing meets (using temporary stables)

Biltmore Estate is a historic house museum and tourist attraction in Asheville, North Carolina. Biltmore House, the main residence, is a Châteauesque-style mansion built for George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States, at 178,926 square feet of floor space (135,280 square feet of living area). Biltmore has four acres of floor space and 250 rooms in the house, including 35 bedrooms for family and guests, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces, three kitchens and 19th-century novelties such as electric elevators, forced-air heating, centrally controlled clocks, fire alarms, and a call bell system. The second floor is accessed by the cantilevered Grand Staircase of 107 steps spiraling around a four-story, wrought-iron chandelier holding 72 light bulbs. The third floor has a number of guest rooms with names that describe the furnishing or artist that they were decorated with and the fourth floor has 21 bedrooms that were inhabited by housemaids, laundresses, and other female servants as well as an Observatory. Finally, the basement level featured activity rooms including an indoor 70,000-gallon heated swimming pool with underwater lighting, a bowling alley, and a gymnasium with once state-of-the-art fitness equipment. The service hub of the house is also found in the largest basement in the US, as the location for the main kitchen, pastry kitchen, rotisserie kitchen, walk-in refrigerators that provided an early form of mechanical refrigeration, the servants' dining hall, laundry rooms and additional bedrooms for staff.
Still owned by George Vanderbilt's descendants, it remains one of the most prominent examples of Gilded Age mansions. Vanderbilt commissioned prominent New York architect Richard Morris Hunt, who had previously designed houses for various Vanderbilt family members, to design the house in the Châteauesque style. Hunt used French Renaissance chateaus as inspiration.
