The #16 Winston-Salem State battled back from a deep deficit late, but could not overcome the hot shooting of the Livingstone College guards and fell 75-72 to the Blue Bears in the CE Gaines Center on the WSSU campus.
The loss drops the Rams to 16-4 overall, 9-2 in the CIAA and 3-2 in the Southern Division. Livingstone College improves to 15-5 overall, 7-4 in the CIAA and also 3-2 in the Southern Division.
Livingstone jumped out on the Rams early to the tune of 9-2, before WSSU would get going to take their first lead with 12:01 in the first half with the score 17-14.
Both teams would trade baskets and the tempo increased, but the Rams, coming off of a tough road win at Johnson C. Smith on Wednesday, could not get things going and fell behind by seven at half, 41-34.
The Blue Bears started the second half hot and continued to pressure the Rams and stretched their lead to 15 points at 56-41, with 10:23 remaining.
Winston-Salem State would hunker down on defense and would battle back to within four at 63-59 with 4:31 left. The Rams would continue to pressure Livingstone and would take the lead at 72-71 with 50 second left on a driving basket by Justin Glover.
But the Blue Bears came right back with a driving layup of their own by Mark Thomas.
With WSSU trailing by two with 5 second to play, Justin Glover's 3-pt attempt was partially blocked but he was also knocked to the floor, but no foul was called.
WSSU head coach, Bobby Collins would pick up a technical foul, and LC made one of two for the final score of 75-72.
Winston-Salem State was led by Justin Glover's 19 points, three assists and two steals to go with two rebounds. Michel-Ofik Nzege added nine points and seven rebounds and Wakefield Ellison added nine points and four rebounds. Kimani Hunt came off the bench to chip in eight points and four rebounds, and Joseph Thompson scored six points and pulled down four rebounds, and Marcus Wells scored five points, had five assists, four rebounds and one steal. Tyre Desmore also chipped in five points and dished out four assists.
For the Blue Bears, Jody Hill scored a game high 23 points, including going 5 of 8 from behind the three point arc. Mark Thomas added 20 points and nine rebounds and Omar Ford-Bey chipped in 13 points. Tyler Johnson finished with six points and eight rebounds.

Gramma was bonkers, a real looney. So it was Mom and her dad on the other side, They loved each other as fully as father and daughter can. When he came to live with the folks, he left her notes hidden all over the house. We were still finding them long after he died.
The marriage was "revealed" because mom was a teacher. Upon marriage, especially in the Depression, it was expected a married woman would quit to give a job to to a man. they kept it quiet to get a little ahead on money.

Open Sailing aims to design and invent future lifestyles to overcome any possible natural and manmade disasters stimulating people’s ingenuity and sense of solidarity. Might it be global warming or energy conflicts, we are living in a time where we are sniffing the ‘Apocalypse’, finally realising our human part of responsibility as the earth is crumbling. 2012 is a year when a collection of apocalyptic events are rumored to happen. We are taking 2012 as an ideal dystopic symbol we design for. 2012 is tomorrow, we must design quickly using these constraints and invent bootstrapping DIY technologies.
Open Sailing method is to convert apocalyptic threats into design constraints. From our compiled set of threat maps, we found that oceans are the safest locations. Ocean survival architecture became our new starting point, but we need to go further than surviving : how can we live together in this new fluid configuration and remain a hyper-connected intelligent social being? We are trying to make a truly “open architecture” : pre-broken, under-defined, reconfigurable, moveable, pluggable, organic, fluid. Can we reach a harmonious dynamic state of interdependence with each other and the earth? Is this the next step of civilization progress? Will we dissociate our concept of progress with infrastructure and metropolis?

The LennonOno Grant for Peace was created by Yoko Ono Lennon to honour her late husband John Lennon’s dedication to peace and commitment to the preservation of human rights.
Created in 2002, this biennial award has always been given to two recipients.
To mark this special anniversary year, Yoko Ono presented this award to four recipients who have been selected based on their courage and commitment to peace, truth and human rights.
The recipients are:
Filmmaker Josh Fox wrote and directed the documentary feature film Gasland in 2010. Josh’s work is known for its mix of gripping narrative, heightened imagery and its commitment to socially conscious themes and subjects.
Barbara Kowalcyk was propelled into food safety advocacy in 2001, when her two-year-old son, Kevin, died after suffering an E.coli infection from tainted food. Barbara and her mother Patricia Buck created the Center for Foodborne Illness & Prevention (CFI) a national non-profit organization committed to improving public health by preventing foodborne illness through research, education, advocacy and service.
Author Michael Pollan has been writing books and articles about the places where nature and culture intersect: on our plates, in our farms and gardens, and in the built environment. He is the author of numerous best sellers, most recently Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual.
Author, poet, and activist Alice Walker is known for her brave stance against racism, sexism, and human rights issues. In 2009, she traveled to Gaza along with a group of 60 other female activists from the anti-war group Code Pink to oppose the controversial blockade and violence against Gaza by Israel and Egypt. Her book Overcoming Speechlessness documents her experiences in Gaza and abroad.
The Elliott School of International Affairs and the Gender Equality Initiative in International Affairs at George Washington University hosted a panel featuring three International Women of Courage (IWOC) honorees and Ambassador Reuben Brigety, Dean of the Elliott School. The IWOC award recognizes women around the globe who have demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership in advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equality, and women’s empowerment, often at great personal risk and sacrifice.
In early 1942 some 550 Italian prisoners of war, captured in North Africa, were brought to Orkney. They were needed to overcome the shortage of labour working on the continuing construction of the Churchill Barriers. These were the four causeways designed to block eastern access to Scapa Flow following the sinking of HMS Royal Oak by a German U-Boat in 1939.
Prisoners of war were prevented by treaty from working on military projects, so the barriers became causeways linking the southern islands of Orkney together, which is what they remain today.
The causeways are not all that remains to remind us of this period. On a bare hillside on the north side of the little island of Lamb Holm, overlooking the most northerly of the Churchill Barriers, is what has become known as the Italian Chapel. The Chapel, together with a nearby concrete statue of St George killing the dragon and an Italian flag fluttering atop a pole are all that remain of Camp 60
Camp 60 was home to the Italian prisoners from 1942 until early 1945. The camp comprised 13 huts, which the Italians improved with concrete paths (concrete was never in short supply during the construction of the Churchill Barriers) and gardens, complete with flower beds and vegetable plots.
In the centre of the camp, one of the prisoners, Domenico Chiocchetti, produced the statue of St George you can still see today, fashioned from barbed wire covered with concrete. The prisoners also worked to produce a theatre and a recreation hut, complete with a billiard table made, perhaps inevitably, from concrete.
One thing Camp 60 did lack was a chapel. In 1943 the camp acquired a new commandant, Major T.P. Buckland. He favoured the idea, as did Father Giacombazzi the Camp Padre. Late in 1943 two Nissen huts were provided. They were joined together end to end, with the intention of providing a chapel in one end and a school in the other.
The work of turning the Nissen huts into a chapel fell to the prisoners themselves, led once more by Domenico Chiocchetti. The interior of the east end was lined with plasterboard and Chiocchetti started work on what is now the sanctuary. The altar and its fittings were made from concrete and were flanked by two windows made from painted glass. The gold curtains either side of the altar were purchased from a company in Exeter using the prisoners' own funds.
Chioccetti then set to work on the painting of the interior of the sanctuary. The end result is a work of art that is magnificent even to jaded 21st Century eyes, and must have been utterly stunning to those imprisoned here in 1943. Another prisoner, Palumbo, who had been an iron worker in the USA before the war, spent four months constructing the wrought iron rood screen, which still complements the rest of the interior today.
The contrast between the east end of the double hut and the remainder was by now so stark that the decision was taken to improve whole interior of the structure. This in turn was lined with plasterboard, before being painted by Chiocchetti and others to resemble brickwork.
This showed up the plainness of the exterior of the chapel, so a number of the prisoners built the facade you can see today, again largely from concrete. The new facade had the effect of concealing the shape of the Nissen huts behind it, and came complete with a belfry, decorated windows, and a moulded head of Christ above the door. At the same time the metal exterior of the huts was thickly coated in concrete.
The end of the war meant that the chapel was only in use by the prisoners for a short period of time. It was still not fully finished when most of the Italians left the island early in 1945, and Chiocchetti stayed behind to complete the font. Before the Italians departed the Lord Lieutenant of Orkney, who also owned Lamb Holm, promised that the Orcadians would look after the chapel they had created
During the years after the war the chapel increasingly became a visitor attraction, and in 1958 a preservation committee was set up. In 1960, the BBC funded a return visit to Orkney by Domenico Chiocchetti. His restoration of the paintwork was followed by a service of rededication attended by 200 Orcadians, and broadcast on Italian radio.
Domenico Chiocchetti returned to Orkney again in 1964 with his wife, and gifted to the chapel the 14 wooden stations of the cross on view today. In 1992, 50 years after the Italians were originally brought to Orkney, 8 of the former prisoners returned, though Chiocchetti was too ill to be with them. Domenico Chiocchetti died on 7 May 1999 in his home village of Moena, aged 89. He did so in the knowledge that his masterpiece will live on as a tribute to his artistry and to the spirit of all those involved in its construction and preservation.

The Karlsruhe castle is the center of the Karlsruhe fan. It was built in 1715-1718 by order of Margrave Karl Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach and was until 1918 Royal Palace of each reigning sovereign (Margrave, later Grand Duke of Baden).
General
Before the castle lies the Palace Square. Directly behind the castle begins the castle garden. The castle along with court and garden does not belong to the city of Karlsruhe, but the state of Baden-Württemberg. It houses the Badische State Museum and the castle café.
From the castle tower you can enjoy a very good view into the Karlsruhe fan. To experience this, though, 158 steps in the castle tower have got to overcome.
In October 2013, the castle for a comprehensive facade and roof renovation was completely scaffolded. The state invests four million euros in the measures. The scaffolds are likely to be dismantled in March 2015 and thus before the extensive celebrations of the 300th anniversary of the city. In addition to optical measures thereby porous sandstone and rotten wood must be replaced. The previous facade renovation took place in 1988.
History
Original construction in 1715
Architect of built 1715-1718 castle was the engineer lieutenant Jakob Friedrich von Batzendorf, construction manager was Heinrich Schwartz from Hamburg. The outer walls as well as the castle tower, which constituted a novelty at that time, were built of stone, the interior design was built for reasons of cost of wood. The western wing was, also for reasons of cost, originally shorter than the eastern wing which also contained a ballroom, an opera house and a chapel.
Renovation and reconstruction from 1750
From 1750, the castle had got to be thoroughly overhauled because it was originally built with poor building materials. In the period 1752-1785 it was according to repeatedly revised plans by Balthasar Neumann of Albrecht Friedrich von Kesslau (around 1728-1788), the then Planning Director at Baden Court, and his successor Wilhelm Jeremias Müller in the Baroque style completely rebuilt of stone. in doing so, the castle itself has been changed several times in the interior and refurbished.
The garden hall was 1819 the venue of the Second Chamber of the Parliament of Baden.
In 1846 the castle rooms and the Palace Square and the adjoining south ministries were first illuminated by means of city gas and gas lanterns.
Baden Revolution 1848/1849
1849, Grand Duke Leopold of Baden by revolutionaries temporarily was expelled from the castle.
20th century
Until the death of Grand Duke Friedrich I in 1907 he lived also in the castle. After the death of Frederick I his wife Grand Duchess Louise did not move to a widow's seat but remained until the end of the monarchy in 1918 in the castle; her son, now Grand Duke Friedrich II, continued to live in Hereditary Grand Ducal Palais (today the BGH/Federal Supreme Court).
1921, in the former Residence the collections for Archaeology and Ethnology and the stocks of the Museum of Decorative Arts as Badisches Landesmuseum were merged.
During World War II the whole castle got a dark camouflage to complicate target recognition from the air. In September 1944, the Karlsruhe Castle was nevertheless totally destroyed by bombing. It was rebuilt - despite interim considerations to demolish the ruins for creating new living space - and restored the historic facade. During reconstruction halls have been created which correspond with the latest technical conditions in museum buildings.

The tower of the State House in Annapolis, Maryland (USA), is the tower of Karlsruhe Castle so similar that it is speculated that this is a replica.

Allgemein
Vor dem Schloss liegt der Schlossplatz. Direkt hinter dem Schloss beginnt der Schlossgarten. Das Schloss samt Platz und Garten gehört nicht der Stadt Karlsruhe, sondern dem Land Baden-Württemberg. Es beherbergt das Badische Landesmuseum und das Schlosscafé.
Vom Schlossturm aus bietet sich ein sehr guter Blick in den Karlsruher Fächer. Um diesen erleben zu können, sind allerdings 158 Stufen im Schlossturm zu überwinden.
Im Oktober 2013 wurde das Schloss für eine umfassende Fassaden- und Dachsanierung vollständig eingerüstet. Das Land investiert vier Millionen Euro in die Maßnahmen. Die Baugerüste sollen voraussichtlich im März 2015 wieder abgebaut werden und damit vor den umfangreichen Feierlichkeiten anlässlich des 300. Stadtjubiläums. Neben optischen Maßnahmen muss dabei poröser Sandstein und verfaultes Holz ersetzt werden. Die vorhergehende Fassadenrenovierung fand im Jahr 1988 statt.
Geschichte
Ursprünglicher Bau 1715
Architekt des zwischen 1715 und 1718 gebauten Schlosses war der Ingenieur-Leutnant Jakob Friedrich von Batzendorf, Bauleiter war Heinrich Schwartz aus Hamburg. Die Außenmauern sowie der Schlossturm, der zu jener Zeit ein Novum darstellte, wurden aus Stein erbaut, der Innenausbau wurde aus Kostengründen aus Holz errichtet. Der westliche Flügel war, ebenfalls aus Kostengründen, ursprünglich kürzer als der östliche Flügel, der auch einen Ballsaal, ein Opernhaus und eine Kapelle enthielt.
Sanierung und Umbau ab 1750
Ab 1750 musste das Schloss grundlegend saniert werden, weil es ursprünglich mit schlechtem Baumaterial gebaut worden war. In der Zeit zwischen 1752 und 1785 wurde es nach mehrfach geänderten Plänen Balthasar Neumanns von Albrecht Friedrich von Kesslau (um 1728-1788), dem damaligen Baudirektor am badischen Hof, und von seinem Nachfolger Wilhelm Jeremias Müller im Stil des Barock vollständig aus Stein umgebaut. Dabei wurde das Schloss auch im Inneren mehrfach verändert und neu möbliert.
Der Gartensaal war 1819 der Tagungsort der Zweiten Kammer des badisches Parlaments.
Im Jahr 1846 wurden die Schlossräume sowie der Schlossplatz und die südlich daran angrenzenden Ministerien erstmals mittels Stadtgas und Gaslaternen beleuchtet.
Badische Revolution 1848/1849
1849 wurde Großherzog Leopold von badischen Revolutionären zeitweise aus dem Schloss vertrieben.
20. Jahrhundert
Bis zum Tod Großherzog Friedrichs I. im Jahr 1907 wohnte dieser auch im Schloss. Nach dem Tod Friedrichs I. zog dessen Gemahlin Großherzogin Luise nicht auf einen Witwensitz, sondern blieb bis zum Ende der Monarchie 1918 im Schloss; ihr Sohn, nun Großherzog Friedrich II., wohnte weiterhin im Erbgroßherzoglichen Palais (heute Sitz des BGH).
1921 wurden in der ehemaligen Residenz die Sammlungen für Altertums- und Völkerkunde und die Bestände des Kunstgewerbemuseums als Badisches Landesmuseum zusammengeführt.
Im Zweiten Weltkrieg erhielt das ganze Schloss einen dunklen Tarnanstrich, um eine Zielerfassung aus der Luft zu erschweren. Im September 1944 wurde das Karlsruher Schloss durch Bombenangriffe dennoch total zerstört. Es wurde wiederaufgebaut – trotz zwischenzeitlicher Überlegungen, die Ruine für die Schaffung neuen Wohnraumes abzureißen – und die historische Fassade wiederhergestellt. Beim Wiederaufbau wurden den neuesten museumstechnischen Bedingungen entsprechende Säle gestaltet.

Emotion overcomes women representatives of the Yolanda widows in Palo, Leyte. In many villages women and children were able to flee to higher ground as the men remained behind to secure their property. Estimates range from 6,000 to 8,000 people killed on the Island of Leyte. UUSC is assisting in building a network of community members trained in the Community Resiliency Model pioneered by the Trauma Resource Institute, a UUSC partner, to address the impact of trauma.

Schwartz, Wittenberg overcome illness to dominate meet

Shafter's Elizabeth Wittenberg and Foothill's Chris Schwartz had more than one thing in common during Saturday's third Wolf Pack Cross Country Invitational held at The Park at River Walk.

The two senior runners not only dominated their respective races, but both did it while feeling slightly ill.
Wittenberg finished the 5K grass course with a time of 20:10 to outdistance second-place finisher Tijerra Lynch of Ridgeview by 54 seconds..
"I honestly didn't feel good before the race," Wittenberg said. "My legs feel bad. "
Schwartz, who ate most of a Baby Ruth candy bar about 30 minutes prior to the boys race, suffered stomach cramps on the way to his winning time of 16:18. Despite the discomfort, the 2007 state champion led start-to-finish.
"I don't usually eat candy before a race," Schwartz said. "I had a banana but I was still hungry."
McFarland's Alfonso Cisneros crossed the finish line in second place, 11 seconds behind Schwartz. Robby Baker of Ridgeview placed third, 20 seconds off the pace.
"It was a really hard race," Cisneros said. "My strategy was to stay close to Chris Schwartz. I was about 12 seconds off so I guess everything went well."
Lynch's result coupled with a fourth-place finish by teammate Jessica Huizar propelled the Wolf Pack to the girls team title with a score of 45. Shafter finished second with 73 , followed by Palmdale with 94, and North with 95 .
With the win the Ridgeview girls are now four-for-four in invitational meets this season. On Wednesday the Wolf Pack handed Centennial its first dual meet loss in school history.
"The girls just worked their butts off over the summer and its paying off," Ridgeview coach Adam Setser said. "I'm just super proud of our girls because they've come such a long way in such a short time."
Cisneros was one of seven Cougars boys to finish in the top-10.
"Today being a little bit warmer we just went with a different approach," McFarland coach Amador Ayon said. "We wanted to go out kind of controlled. The kids wanted run within themselves. They didn't want to exert too much considering that we've been working real hard the last couple of weeks. We wanted to stay as close together as we could as a pack. Our goal was to be 10-15 seconds between (runners) one through seven."
McFarland, the top ranked Division IV school in the state, dominated the boys team competition with a score of 25. Palmdale, the only non Kern County entry in the field, finished second with 95, followed by Ridgeview with 118.
The girls race unfolded perfectly for Wittenberg who took over the lead right before the two mile mark.
"I had three or four girls leading it so I didn't even have to think the first half the race, Wittenberg said. "I got to the point where I felt I can do this, I can pick it up a little bit, so I went."
Lynch, a first-year cross country runner, used a strong kick to pass several runners near the end.
"At the beginning I thought I went out a little to fast," Lynch said. "The hills were a little hard but I just knew I could push through it at the end and I did. Its all a mental thing and so I knew I could get them and I did."
The boys race was largely uneventful with Schwartz turning in another Schwartz-like performance.
"In the beginning I took the lead and I was being challenged for at least a mile and a half," Schwartz said. "After that people started to slow down and I just kept my same pace."
