Schwartz, Wittenberg overcome illness to dominate meet

The two senior runners not only dominated their respective races, but both did it while feeling slightly ill.
Wittenberg finished the 5K grass course with a time of 20:10 to outdistance second-place finisher Tijerra Lynch of Ridgeview by 54 seconds..
"I honestly didn't feel good before the race," Wittenberg said. "My legs feel bad. "
Schwartz, who ate most of a Baby Ruth candy bar about 30 minutes prior to the boys race, suffered stomach cramps on the way to his winning time of 16:18. Despite the discomfort, the 2007 state champion led start-to-finish.
"I don't usually eat candy before a race," Schwartz said. "I had a banana but I was still hungry."
McFarland's Alfonso Cisneros crossed the finish line in second place, 11 seconds behind Schwartz. Robby Baker of Ridgeview placed third, 20 seconds off the pace.
"It was a really hard race," Cisneros said. "My strategy was to stay close to Chris Schwartz. I was about 12 seconds off so I guess everything went well."
Lynch's result coupled with a fourth-place finish by teammate Jessica Huizar propelled the Wolf Pack to the girls team title with a score of 45. Shafter finished second with 73 , followed by Palmdale with 94, and North with 95 .
With the win the Ridgeview girls are now four-for-four in invitational meets this season. On Wednesday the Wolf Pack handed Centennial its first dual meet loss in school history.
"The girls just worked their butts off over the summer and its paying off," Ridgeview coach Adam Setser said. "I'm just super proud of our girls because they've come such a long way in such a short time."
Cisneros was one of seven Cougars boys to finish in the top-10.
"Today being a little bit warmer we just went with a different approach," McFarland coach Amador Ayon said. "We wanted to go out kind of controlled. The kids wanted run within themselves. They didn't want to exert too much considering that we've been working real hard the last couple of weeks. We wanted to stay as close together as we could as a pack. Our goal was to be 10-15 seconds between (runners) one through seven."
McFarland, the top ranked Division IV school in the state, dominated the boys team competition with a score of 25. Palmdale, the only non Kern County entry in the field, finished second with 95, followed by Ridgeview with 118.
The girls race unfolded perfectly for Wittenberg who took over the lead right before the two mile mark.
"I had three or four girls leading it so I didn't even have to think the first half the race, Wittenberg said. "I got to the point where I felt I can do this, I can pick it up a little bit, so I went."
Lynch, a first-year cross country runner, used a strong kick to pass several runners near the end.
"At the beginning I thought I went out a little to fast," Lynch said. "The hills were a little hard but I just knew I could push through it at the end and I did. Its all a mental thing and so I knew I could get them and I did."
The boys race was largely uneventful with Schwartz turning in another Schwartz-like performance.
"In the beginning I took the lead and I was being challenged for at least a mile and a half," Schwartz said. "After that people started to slow down and I just kept my same pace."

After missing 2 amazing sunsets over the last few days, i finally had a chance to make it out to the ocean. Unfortunately it just didn't turn out the way i was hoping. So the title for this shot means 2 things...the rock being overcome...and me being overcome by the fact that i'll have to wait for the next skyshow.....sigh

Bangor produced an awesome display of power and composure to overcome a strong Clogher Valley side by 9-6 and book their place in this season’s final.
With both sides able to field their full-strength starting fifteens, backed up by an equally proficient seven man bench, this all-Ulster semi-final between two of the top teams within the Qualifying League had caught the attention of many rugby enthusiasts who were anticipating a memorable contest. The playing surface and weather conditions were just about perfect, with what little breeze there was blowing across the pitch and of little advantage to either side.
With hundreds of spectators lining the touchlines, and many more watching from the warmth and comfort of the clubhouse, Bangor’s Jason Morgan got proceedings underway. The home side didn’t want to repeat the early mistakes of last week’s game at CIYMS, and appeared to be focussed from the outset. However, Clogher Valley were obviously mindful of their last visit to Upritchard Park and started with power and purpose. The first couple of set pieces showed why their pack is a force to be reckoned with, pushing Bangor back with worrying ease. Building on this early dominance, Clogher took play into Bangor’s twenty two and mounted several good attacking moves. Bangor’s defence held firm on each occasion, until Clogher decided the only way they were going to come away with some points for these efforts was to take a drop goal, giving them an early lead by 0-3.
Having been under considerable pressure, Bangor started to work their way back into the game and were eventually rewarded with a Mark Widdowson penalty, which levelled the scores at 3-3 after 20 minutes. Further pressure from the home side soon resulted in another Clogher infringement at the breakdown, which resulted in another Widdowson penalty which put Bangor ahead for the first time by 6-3.
Although Clogher still looked dangerous in attack, when Bangor regained possession they quickly turned defence into attack through sensible and accurate positional kicking from Jason Morgan. Having gained good territory, Bangor then fought hard to stay there, even to the point where they managed to charge down two Clogher clearance kicks, although to the visitors’ relief the ball bounced out of play. However, the sustained pressure being exerted through Bangor’s back line eventually led to another penalty, which Widdowson converted to extend the lead to 9-3, which brought the first half to a close.
The first good attacking opportunity of the second half fell to Clogher after just 6 minutes. From a penalty in mid-field, a good kick brought the line-out close to Bangor’s 5 metre line. This is usually the platform from where Clogher are most deadly – their line-out and driving maul is a difficult force to stop. However, Bangor were prepared and not only stopped the drive, but turned the ball over and cleared their lines. Then to drive home the fact, they did it again a few minutes later. Given Clogher’s rightful reputation for their prowess in this area, the defensive response by Bangor’s forwards was truly impressive.
The only worrying time for Bangor came after 14 minutes when captain Jamie Clegg was somewhat harshly yellow-carded for pulling down a maul. From the resulting penalty, Clogher clawed back 3 points, making the score now 9-6.
However, obviously buoyed by their earlier dominance in the forwards, the seven man scrum of Bangor was now pushing the eight man Clogher pack backwards. Psychologically, this was a turning point, as Bangor now assumed control and prevented their opponents from developing any meaningful attacks. This, combined with Morgan’s positional kicking, resulted in Clogher being pinned down for most of the final quarter in their own half. Clogher’s situation became even more difficult when, after 22 minutes, one of their second row forwards was yellow-carded for not rolling away from a tackle.
With both sides finding it hard to break through each other’s defence, Bangor played tactically by simply preventing their opponents to build meaningful attacks through committed and effective defence, and then pushing them back deep into their own territory through long kicks for touch. On at least two occasions, Bangor came close to crossing Clogher’s line through breaks by Curtis Stewart and Davy Charles. They then had an opportunity within the final 5 minutes to extend their lead when Widdowson had another penalty kick from the right of Clogher’s posts. However, a sudden attack of cramp in his run-up resulted in the kick being miss-hit, and the ball drifted wide of the mark. Although disappointed not to have scored, Bangor stuck to their plan, and continued to thwart any chance of a counter attack, finally running down the clock to record a famous victory.
While the final score-line may not suggest it, this was an enthralling game from start to finish, played in good spirit and without any major injuries. For the visitors’ part, they may feel that they didn’t play to their normal high standard. However, they came up against a Bangor side that has proved so far in this competition that it can match and better the best junior sides in Ireland. Bangor’s route to the final has been as difficult as it could be possible – Clonmel (one of the pre-tournament favourites, and Munster champions) in round 1, Enniscorthy (the current cup holders) in the quarter finals, and now Clogher Valley (last year’s beaten finalists, and the current QL1 champions) in the semis. What lies ahead on 31st January 2015 is still unclear, following a 25-25 draw at the other semi-final between CIYMS and Dundalk. What is clear, however, is that Bangor can rightly look forward in confidence to face whoever is to come between them and the title. In the meantime, there are still vital games ahead in the league, resuming with a home fixture against Cooke next weekend.

The Elliott School of International Affairs and the Gender Equality Initiative in International Affairs at George Washington University hosted a panel featuring three International Women of Courage (IWOC) honorees and Ambassador Reuben Brigety, Dean of the Elliott School. The IWOC award recognizes women around the globe who have demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership in advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equality, and women’s empowerment, often at great personal risk and sacrifice.

I'm back from our annual conference! The final event of the three-day meeting is an ordination service.
Prior to the service, each year, a group of us gather for a vigil. We're part of an organization calle the Methodist Federation for Social Action.
Our vigil is in honor of those who are excluded, by our denomination's rules, from ordination. We will continue to hold these vigils until people across the entire gender spectrum are accepted, including gays, leabians, transexuals, and bisexuals. The multi-colored stoles that some of the clergy in the photo are wearing symbolize this inclusiveness.
This year, I believe the majority of the clergy participated in the vigil. That's remarkable!

an idea for a weekend sermon series on getting over the selfishness of our culture. this was the first draft of the final.
Within the realms of athleticism, there are those who defy the principles of nature, overcoming gravity with feats of strength, agility, and endurance. The heroes are rewarded with parades, a myriad of fans, and, perhaps a few fireworks; whilst those who fail are pushed to the side, told to dust themselves off, and try again next year. We often think of these people as the basketball or football star. Yet more frequent is our neglect for the bona fide athletes of our day. Athlete as defined in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is “a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina.” True, other sports contain parts of this definition, but none as fully as that of the regularly forgotten sport of Track and Field. The epitome of this sport are the decathletes: men and women who dedicate themselves to not just one event, but ten.
These athletes usually start off focusing on single events in the track world, perhaps running the 400 or the high jump. Then they move forward into brighter frontiers where they attempt even more events, maybe adding a throw such as the javelin or the shot put. If a coach sees some potential, or the individual sees it in them self, they decide to make the great leap into the elite class of decathlete. The decathlon consists of ten events over the course of two days. The first day events include: 100 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400 metres; while the second day events are: 110 metres hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and the 1500 metres. As the athletes progress through each event, their endurance is tested, as each event allocates its pain toward different muscles. Those whose muscle memory is trained for one specific purpose begin to find they are no match for the endless toil of a day full of a full body work out. Not only do these events necessitate the players ability to perform them; furthermore it requires the surpassing and succession of their competitors in those same events. So, besides the races, these aren’t a one time performance and continue on to the next event kind of thing, it requires the process of elimination, repeating the attainment of success by eradicating the weak from the group one by one by heats, and finally climbing to the top by exhibiting superior strength, agility, and stamina.
Disregarded in this portrayal of pure athleticism is the worshipping fans, the celebratory fireworks, and the parades in their honor. Most track meets resemble a practice than an actual event, as those who attend usually consist of nothing more than those who are related to someone on the team, or are actually participating in another event on the same day. SUU's Wade Nielson, Brent Springall, Shaye Maurer, Cheyenne Thatcher, and Sasha Russell; these are names that are little known in main stream society, yet there needs be more credit where credit is due, if we say we support the other superstars for their athletic ability, then we must give it up for these true athletes.

I took inspiration for this composition from Horace Nicholls' 1909 Derby Grandstand, an obvious difference being this grandstand is not packed with people.
This shot was taken as part of activity 5 for VIS15 (RMIT).
Cobb Classic Vs Valdosta
The #12 Winston-Salem State University Rams could not overcome costly penalties and a late fumble, as they fell to #23 Valdosta State 22-17 in Powder Springs, GA Saturday evening.
The loss drop Winston-Salem State to 1-1, while Valdosta State improves to 2-0.
The game was a rematch of the 2012 DII National Championship game, and it lived up to its billing in an exciting game.
After a scoreless first quarter, Valdosta State got on the board first on a Jake Medlock one yard run for score, and the ensuing two point conversion game the Blazers an early 8-0 lead.
After another Ram punt, the WSSU defense bowed up, with Terry Ross intercepting a Jake Medlock pass and returning it 52 yards for a touchdown to move the Rams to within one at 8-7.
But Valdosta State would answer right back with a 10 play, 70 yard drive finished off by a Cedric O'Neal three yard run to push the Blazers back out to a 15-7 lead heading into the locker room at the half.
WSSU would take the second half kick and march 60 yards in 12 plays, but could only manage a 21 yard field goal from Alejandro Suarez, as the drive stalled, cutting the Valdosta State lead to 15-10.
Once again however, the WSSU Rams could not get off the field on third down, as it led to another Blazer score. This time O'Neal reached the endzone from five yards out to push Valdosta State out to a 22-10 lead in heading into the fourth quarter.
WSSU's Phil Sims would lead the Rams on a long 14 play, 99 yard scoring drive, capped by Sims' first touchdown pass as a Ram, when he would hook up with Marcel Caver for a 15 yard scoring pass and reception to pull the Rams to within five, at 22-17.
Winston-Salem State's defense would continue to play well and forced VSU to punt on several occasions, and the Rams seemed to have the momentum as they would get the ball back with 6:52 left to play.
Rudy Johnson would lead the Rams on a 10 play drive, but on first and goal, Johnson would turn the corner and would score, but eh play would be called back for a holding penalty. On the next play, Johnson would be hit and fumbled and Valdosta would recover at the 12 yard line.
The WSSU defense would stand tall once more, to force a punt, but Valdosta's Medlock would pinned the Rams deep, as he would kick a 75 yard punt, pinning the Rams at the two yard line with 1:09 left.
Phil Sims would find Donovan Rasberry twice, and Jamal Haizlip once to get the ball to midfield with 10 seconds left to play.
But on the final play, Phil Sims' hail mary pass would be knocked down at the goal line, giving the Valdosta State Blazers the 22-17 upset win.
Winston-Salem State did out produce the Blazers in yardage (399 to 391), but the Valdosta State defense kept the pressure on Rudy Johnson and Phil Sims all afternoon, forcing the Rams into just 15 of 44 passing. WSSU was also flagged eight times for 71 yards.
Offensively for WSSU, Rudy Johnson led the rushing attack with 14 carries for 64 yards, while Maurice Lewis rushed 12 times for 42 yards. Tyree Massey rushed seven times for 34 yards.
Phil Sims finished the afternoon just nine of 29 passing for 146 yards and one touchdown, while Rudy Johnson went six of 14 for 116 yards.
Marcel Caver led the Rams in receiving with five catches for 57 yards and one touchdown, while Eric Williams finished with three catches for 80 yards. Bronson Green (40 yds), Jalen McDaniel (37 yds) and Donovan Rasberry (34 yds) had two catches each.
Terry Ross led the Rams defensively, with 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one pass breakup and one interception returned 52 yards for a score. James Hickman finished with nine tackles and Duvontae Covington finished with seven, and Xavier Gregory six tackles on the afternoon.
Winston-Salem State will come back home to Bowman Gray Stadium next week for another tough out of conference matchup, this time hosting the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University at 6:00 pm.
