Abandoned 1822 Methodist Church

The towering monument on the north side of the nave commemorates Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (d.1852). The monument was designed and sculpted by Alfred Stevens, beginning in 1857 but not being completed until seven years after Stevens's death in 1912 when the equestrian statue of the Duke by John Tweed was added.

Like many great cathedrals St Paul's in London contains many dramatic sculpted monuments and memorials. However those at St Paul's often shock me somewhat with their overly military theme, with seemingly far more sculptures devoted to pagan figures than Christian ones (quite unlike those at other cathedrals, this one can seem more a temple to War or Nationalism rather than to Christ!).

The most interesting pieces in my opinion are the damaged Elizabethan effigies in the crypt that survive from Old St Paul's (very much scarred and blackened by the Great Fire of London) along with John Donne's shrouded figure by Nicholas Stone in the south choir aisle.

Patan (Sanskrit: पाटन Pātan, Newar: यल Yala), officially Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City, is the third largest city of Nepal after Kathmandu and Pokhara and it is located in the south-central part of Kathmandu Valley. Patan is also known as Manigal. It is best known for its rich cultural heritage, particularly its tradition of arts and crafts. It is called city of festival and feast, fine ancient art, making of metallic and stone carving statue. At the time of the 2011 Nepal census it had a population of 226,728 in 54,748 individual households. The city received extensive damage from an earthquake on 25 April 2015.

GEOGRAPHY

Patan is on the elevated tract of land in Kathmandu Valley on the south side of the Bagmati River, which separates it from the city of Kathmandu on the northern and western side. The Nakkhu Khola acts as the boundary on the southern side. It was developed on relatively thin layers of deposited clay and gravel in the central part of a dried ancient lake known as the Nagdaha.

It is the third largest city of the country, after Kathmandu, and Pokhara.

The city has an area of 15.43 square kilometres and is divided into 22 municipal wards. It is bounded by:

East: Imadol VDC and Harisiddhi VDC

West: Kirtipur Municipality and Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC)

North: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC)

South: Saibu VDC, Sunakothi VDC and Dhapakhel VDC

CLIMATE

Climate is characterized by relatively high temperatures and evenly distributed precipitation throughout the year. The Köppen Climate Classification subtype for this climate is "Cfa" (Humid Subtropical Climate).

HISTORY

Lalitpur is believed to have been founded in the third century BC by the Kirat dynasty and later expanded by Licchavis in the sixth century. It was further expanded by the Mallas during the medieval period.

There are many legends about its name. The most popular one is the legend of the God Rato Machhindranath, who was brought to the valley from Kamaru Kamachhya, located in Assam, India, by a group of three people representing the three kingdoms centered in the Kathmandu Valley.

One of them was called Lalit, a farmer who carried God Rato Machhindranath to the valley all the way from Assam, India. The purpose of bringing the God Rato Machhindranath to the valley was to overcome the worst drought there. There was a strong belief that the God Rato Machhindranath would bring rain in the valley. It was due to Lalit's effort that the God Rato Machhindranath was settled in Lalitpur. Many believe that the name of the town is kept after his name Lalit and pur meaning township.

In May, a chariot festival honoring the deity known as Bunga Dyah Jatra is held in Patan. It is the longest and one of the most important religious celebrations in Patan.

During the month-long festival, an image of Rato Machhendanath is placed on a tall chariot and pulled through the city streets in stages.

Lalitpur said to have been founded by King Veer Deva in 299 AD, but there is unanimity among scholars that Patan was a well established and developed town since ancient times. Several historical records including many other legends indicate that Patan is the oldest of all the cities of Kathmandu Valley. According to a very old Kirat chronicle, Patan was founded by Kirat rulers long before the Licchavi rulers came into the political scene in Kathmandu Valley. According to that chronicle, the earliest known capital of Kirat rulers was Thankot. Kathmandu, the present capital was most possibly removed from Thankot to Patan after the Kirati King Yalamber came into power sometimes around second century AD.

One of the most used and typical Newar names of Patan is Yala. It is said that King Yalamber or Yellung Hang named this city after himself, and ever since this ancient city was known as Yala.

In 1768, Lalitpur was annexed to the Gorkha Kingdom by Prithvi Narayan Shah in the Battle of Lalitpur.

HISTORICAL MONUMENTS

The city was initially designed in the shape of the Buddhist Dharma-Chakra (Wheel of Righteousness). The four thurs or mounds on the perimeter of Patan are ascribed around, one at each corner of its cardinal points, which are popularly known as Asoka Stupas. Legend has it that Emperor Asoka (the legendary King of India) visited with his daughter Charumati to Kathmandu in 250 BC and erected five Asoka Stupas, four in the surrounding and one at the middle of the Patan. The size and shape of these stupas seem to breathe their antiquity in a real sense. There are more than 1,200 Buddhist monuments of various shapes and sizes scattered in and around the city.

The most important monument of the city is Patan Durbar Square, which has been listed by UNESCO as one of seven Monument Zones that make up the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Site. The seven monument zones were included in the World Heritage List in 1979 as one integrated site. The monument zones are declared as protected and preserved according to the Monuments Preservation Act of 1956. The Square was heavily damaged on 25 April 2015 by an earthquake.

Patan City was planned in Vihars and Bahils. Out of 295 Vihars and Bahils of the valley 56% of them are in Patan. The water conduits, stone spouts, Jaladroni (water tanks), artistic gate ways, Hindu temples and Buddhist Vihars adorn the city. The in built cultural heritage like the royal palace, with intricately carved doors and windows and beautiful courtyards adorned with exquisite icons enhance the beauty of the city. Such art pieces are found in stone, metal, terracotta ivory and other objects. All these artifacts exhibit artistic excellence of the craftsmen and the whole city looks like an open museum.

ECONOMY

A substantial portion of the population is engaged in trades, notably in traditional handicrafts and small scale cottage industries, and some residents work in agriculture. Lalitpur has produced the highest number of renowned artists and finest craftsmen ever recorded in the history of Nepali art.

Patan has maintained a culture of craftwork even in the face of rapid urbanization and many social and political upheavals.

The city is less urbanized than Kathmandu, north of the Bagmati river, but is home to many workshops, stores, restaurants, hotels, schools, embassies and other important sectors of the Kathmandu Valley economy.

Buddha Air has its headquarters in Jawalakhel, near Patan.

EDUCATION

POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION

Patan is home to Pulchowk Engineering Campus, one of the oldest and most reputed colleges affiliated with the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University. Patan Academy of Health Sciences is the only medical university in the city with Patan Hospital as its primary teaching hospital, and there is another medical school - KIST Medical College in Lalitpur. Other instituitions of higher learning in Patan include Kathmandu University School of Management (KUSOM) and Patan Multiple Campus.

PRIMARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION

The city is served by a number of private and public instituitions providing education from primary until secondary level. Among all, the largest and reputed schools are Adarsha Vidya Mandir, St. Xavier's School, St. Mary's, Little Angels School, Graded English Medium School, Rato Bangala School, DAV Sushil Kedia, Adarsha Kanya Niketan, The British School, Adarsha Saral Madhyamik Vidyalay and Gyanodaya Bal Batika School.

LIBRARIES

Nepal National Library which was established in 1957 AD was moved to Patan from Singha Durbar in 2061 AD. It is at Harihar Bhawan. Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya which awards the Madan Puraskar and Jagadamba Shree Puraskar literary prizes is in the city.

PLACES OF INTEREST

Patan is renowned as a very artistic city. Most of the Nepalese art is devoted to Gods, and there are an abundance of temples and viharas. Notable places of interest include:

Patan Durbar Square: The palace square and residence of the Malla rulers of Patan state which now houses a museum.

Patan Dhoka: One of the historical entrances to the old city.

Bhaskerdev Samskarita Hiranyabarna Mahavihara: A Buddhist temple known locally as Golden Temple.

Mahabouddha Temple: Also known as 1000 Buddha Temple modeled liked the Mahabodhi temple in Bodh Gaya.

Kumbheswor Temple: A Shiva temple with two ponds whose water is believed to come from Gosaikunda.

Ratnakar Mahavihar: Also known as Ha Baha, the viahara complex is the official residence of the Kumari of Patan.

Krishna Mandir: One of the most beautiful stone temples of Nepal built by King Siddhinarsingh Malla in the 16th century.

Park Gallery: an artist run space founded in 1970.

TRANSPORTATION

AIRPORTS

ROADS

Walking is the easiest method of transportation within the city as the core is densely populated. In terms of motor transport, Kathmandu Valley Ring Road which encircles the central part of the valley is a strategic road in the city. Connection to Kathmandu over the Bagmati River is provided by a host of road and pedestrian bridges. The most trafficked and important bridge connecting to the centre of Kathmandu is Thapathali Bridge. Since pedestrians and vehicles often have to share the same road, traffic congestion is a major problem in Patan. Efforts are being made to widen roads to make them more suitable to vehicular traffic.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Private companies operate a number of routes connecting Patan with other places in the valley. Buses, micro-buses and electric tempos are the most common forms of public transport seen in the city. Lalitpur Yatayat buses connects the touristic Thamel area of Kathmandu with buses stopping at Patan Dhoka, a five-minute walk to Patan Durbar Square. Lagankhel Bus Park is the central transport hub.

MEDIA

To Promote local culture Patan has one FM radio station Radio Sagarmatha - 102.4 MHz which is a Community radio station.

LANGUAGE

The original native language of Patan is Nepal Bhasa's Lalitpur dialect. Though due to the migration form other places to Patan, other languages like Nepali, Tamang, etc. are also spoken.

Snake (tree boa) at the Singapore Zoo in the reptile house. There is nothing which gives me more chills than snakes, so this will probably be one of very few pictures, if not the only one, of a snake in my photostream. I'm already feeling awful posting this anywhere for everybody who feels like me about snakes. And I know, there was glass between me and the snake, but believe me, just having to focus on it already gave me the chills.

My project package from arthouse.com arrived in the mail...and it wasn't quite what I expected in terms of sketchbook quality, but I'm OK with that. So, this is the start of my contribution to The Sketchbook Project 2011. The theme I selected is "Beneath the Surface". I will be using it as motivation to explore watercolor pencil, a media I've never tried before...because it seems to be very portable, forgiving, and not too far removed from my architectural history of colored marker with ink line.

In part what I expect to appear in the book are the mental images I hold for the characters, settings, and discoveries from the historical fiction novel, The MugPhlute Chronicles...and I have hopes that by getting those images onto paper that I can actually finish writing the novel (thus, the "overcoming inertia" title above).

The first ink line sketch that you see on tracing paper in this image is the pith helmet wearing character, Dr. Ephriam Bowen (an old Chenoweth family name that I was blessed by NOT being named)... roughly modeled after the high contrast sketch of my dad (lower right-hand corner) from my last visit with him before he died. All to say, there is much "Beneath the Surface" in my thinking and sketching for this project.

I have already connected with several, truly gifted artists who will be my inspiration, my mentors, and my cheerleaders. I appreciate them allowing me to tag along and learn from this adventure.

The Elliott School of International Affairs and the Gender Equality Initiative in International Affairs at George Washington University hosted a panel featuring three International Women of Courage (IWOC) honorees and Ambassador Reuben Brigety, Dean of the Elliott School. The IWOC award recognizes women around the globe who have demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership in advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equality, and women’s empowerment, often at great personal risk and sacrifice.

This is a VINTAGE Japanese Men's Nagajuban. Nagajuban or Juban are under-kimono. This one features a beautiful pattern blooming plum tree in a quiet countryside. Plum blossoms are a symbol of strength, endurance and overcoming adversity because, in Japan, plum trees bloom in February sometimes while covered in frost, or while there is still snow on the ground.

I have inspected this kimono in detail, and there are a few faint marks as well as one more prominent mark on the lower collar. Overall I would rate this juban in good vintage condition. There are no holes, tears or seam separations. I believe this garment is 100% silk.

MEASUREMENTS:

138cm - Long (Collar to Hem)

132cm - Arm span

64cm - Width across the back

128cm - Total width of skirt

49cm - Sleeve drop

SIZING:

If you are unsure of how to interpret the kimono's size it is important to know that men's kimono are made to match the height of the wearer. The length of the kimono should match the distance from the shoulders to the floor of the wearer. In this case, this kimono would likely fit someone who is about 168cm (5'6"). The kimono should also wrap around the body a full 1.5 times. So this kimono would fit a man with a body about 85cm (33.5"). There is a little bit of give and take in these measurements.

Ukraine's Internal Resilience Plan consists of ten points: "Unity", "Front", "Armament", "Money", "Energy", "Security", "Communities", "Human Capital", "Cultural Sovereignty" and "Heroes Policy". President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented the contents of the plan in his speech at the Verkhovna Rada.

The first point – “Unity”. According to the Head of State, without unity, the necessary results of the Victory Plan cannot be achieved.

“The world may sometimes turn a deaf ear to individual voices, but never to an entire nation that knows what it wants, works together, and knows how to achieve its goals,” the Head of State noted.

In particular, it is thanks to unity that Ukraine has achieved the highest level of closeness with the EU and NATO for the entire period of its independence. The President urged everyone in the country to act with maximum speed in adopting and implementing the decisions necessary for Ukraine to become the fastest country to join the European Union.

"The right of Ukraine to NATO membership is also of vital importance to all of us. Ukraine will be in the Alliance. It will if we continue to engage with the Alliance in unity – all of Ukraine as one. This is the only way nations are not rejected,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy added.

The second point – “Front”. It provides for specific measures to stabilize the front, enhance the technological capabilities of Ukraine’s Defense Forces, simplify processes and overcome bureaucracy within the army.

“Changing approaches to personnel management in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Guard of Ukraine, as well as spreading the best management practices applied in some units to all other elements of Ukraine's Defense and Security Forces, is a central task of our country's defense policy,” the President noted.

The third point – “Armament”. It refers to expanding domestic production of guns and artillery shells, missiles, and drones in cooperation with partners. According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian armament is one of the foundations of independence.

“There is no doubt that simply increasing production is not enough for us. We need to surpass Russia in technology. Currently, we are often looking for answers to their technological solutions. Unfortunately, they have them. We need them to look for answers to our technological solutions,” the Head of State stressed.

The fourth point – “Money”. It is about building a new economic policy based on supporting Ukrainian entrepreneurship, de-shadowing of business and ensuring its security, as well as reducing the pressure from all state institutions.

“This is the kind of economic policy that can lead Ukraine to sustainable economic growth, sufficient coverage of Ukraine's defense needs, and preservation of human capital, through the ability of Ukrainians to realize themselves and their aspirations in Ukraine. This will not happen without a strong economy. And a strong economy is impossible without respect for entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy explained.

The fifth point – “Energy”. It provides for the protection of energy facilities, measures to improve energy efficiency and rational resource consumption. It also includes efforts to create the conditions for Ukraine to become an energy hub.

“Overall, the energy point of the Resilience Plan will be detailed through various annexes – both classified and public – that together will form a clear energy roadmap for Ukraine for the coming years,” the President emphasized.

The sixth point – “Security”. It focuses on internal security, which includes the implementation of a new nationwide security system: Safe Region, Safe City, Safe Community. It also includes measures to strengthen the state border, and extensive work on the construction and reconstruction of shelters.

“Strengthening Ukraine's state border, training Ukrainians in civil defense and first aid, and deploying a system of basic military training are long-term necessities. This is not about fear. It is about confidence and peace of mind,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted.

The seventh point – “Communities”. It is based on creating a highly effective system of governance within communities, especially those that have received internally displaced persons and relocated businesses. This point also envisages an increase in the international component of the work – cooperation with countries that have taken patronage over certain Ukrainian regions or cities. In addition, it provides for the establishment of special tax conditions for communities in border regions.

“We must not forget our communities that are currently in temporarily occupied territories. We will not forget them. Ukraine must be prepared at all levels to restore control over its entire territory at the right time and through the right actions. And bring back our people,” the President stressed.

The eighth point – “Human Capital”. It includes several annexes based on Ukraine's new housing recovery policy and the national standard for accessibility. A separate annex focuses on a new approach to the education of Ukrainian children living abroad. This point of the Plan also provides for the modernization of social policy, including the healthcare system, and the development of cooperation between the state and the Church.

In addition, this point offers concrete solutions for preserving human capital: the creation of an institute of multiple citizenships, the reboot of diplomatic service, and free meals for all schoolchildren. A special central executive body, the Ministry of Ukrainian Unity, will also be created to address the needs of the global Ukrainian community.

“We must create all the conditions necessary for Ukrainians – wherever they may be – to truly identify as Ukrainians, to work in Ukraine, with Ukraine, for Ukraine, to maintain a genuine and strong emotional bond with our state, with the entire Ukrainian nation, with its achievements and goals,” the Head of State noted.

The ninth point – “Cultural Sovereignty”. It provides for the establishment of a broad cultural coalition and, in particular, the implementation of a “Cultural Ramstein” format, the development of cultural diplomacy to promote Ukrainian narratives through cultural and artistic projects abroad. It also envisages the creation of an event calendar for Ukrainian culture in all regions of the world in order to systematically support Ukrainian content. In addition, it aims to create modern cultural spaces and improve cultural infrastructure.

“And the most obvious. The deliberate and systematic creation of our own Ukrainian content. Content capable of fully replacing Russian content. This involves investments in the creation of Ukrainian cultural products for different social groups and age categories, especially for our children. This is a matter of both resilience and our security now and in the future. We must outplay Russia in this sphere,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy pointed out.

The tenth point – “Heroes Policy.” According to the President, this point is perhaps the most morally significant one.

Its implementation should regulate the transition from military service to veteran status. It contains five specific annexes. The first, on the health and rehabilitation of veterans, provides special conditions for defenders. The second is related to the completion of preparatory work for launching the Veteran Assistant Program. The third is aimed at creating a network of veterans spaces in each region of Ukraine. The fourth is focused on the introduction of economic and social support programs for veterans, including assistance in the purchase of housing. The fifth focuses on educational initiatives for veterans and their children.

“Everything should provide an institutional guarantee that the state and society are always with the veteran and his or her family. And this must be fully and systematically implemented,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized.

The complete Internal Resilience Plan for Ukraine with all its annexes will be presented this December. According to the President, the document will ultimately become the first Ukrainian doctrine aimed to lead Ukraine from war to peace.

"This is the way of peace -- overcome evil with good, and falsehood with truth, and hatred with love."

Emotion overcomes women representatives of the Yolanda widows in Palo, Leyte. In many villages, women and children were able to flee to higher ground as the men remained behind to secure their property. Estimates range from 6,000 to 8,000 people killed on the Island of Leyte. UUSC is assisting in building a network of community members trained in the Community Resiliency Model pioneered by the Trauma Resource Institute, a UUSC partner, to address the impact of trauma.

As part of the EU legislation, every country has it fill its quota of horrendously and badly modified cars. Spain, the relatively new man of Europe (joined 1986), its doing its bit here. Taken in January 2006 in a very rainy Algeciras.

Note the cracked fibreglass and the missing headlamp / indicator lenses. The lettering at the top of the windscreen appears to say 'Thug Life' (?).

Apparently Thug Life is defined as: is the opposite of someone having all he needs to succeed. Thug life is when you have nothing, and succeed, when you have overcome all obstacles to reach your aim.

A Photojournalistic Documentation of how Covid-19 has affected the North, and how the North has adapted to overcome these difficulties.

Whilst the Highlands has always been popular with national and international tourists, there has been a massive rise of Scots enjoying a staycation, with camper vans and tents being the popular choice for accommodation as opposed to the hotels and hostels dotted around the North. Also on the rise are those travelling in their own cars, motorbikes, cycling and even 2 former hearses, who camp in tents at the roadside.

With the rise of staycationers, shops and restaurants have been extra vigilant to keep to the governments guidelines by measuring distancing on shop floors, having signs in shop windows to remind visitors to wear a face coverings, some shops limiting the amount of customers in at a time, offering hand sanitiser at the entrance, and many even having artwork of some form thanking the NHS for its hard work.

Not everything is fully open however, but those who can open have had to change how they operate. Tourist destinations that are able to open have had to limit the amount of customers to keep everyone safe, so for many tourists and staycationers they are opting to avoid tourist hotspots and are mostly interacting with activities they can do by themselves, so instead of visiting castles, museums and activity centres, tourists drive to beauty spots, go for walks, and are interacting with the natural landscape more. Instead of tourist hotspots like Eilean Donan Castle being queued out the door, tourists only go as far as the car park, get some photos of the castle, then leave to visit something else.

So has Highland tourism been affected by Covid-19? Yes, where folk are more cautious, shops and restaurants have signage in place requesting patrons wear face coverings, where town centres are quieter than usual, where public toilets have signage, where campsites won’t allow motorhomes unless they have on-board toilets, where almost every lay-by in the evening has someone camping overnight. So whilst it has affected the tourist season it hasn’t stopped tourism, if anything the Highlands are busier than normal due to a massive rise in staycationers, it’s made tourist and locals alike be more careful, where local community councils are making sure there are toilet facilities available or trowels left in camping locations to bury human waste, where hand sanitiser is available at popular tourist destinations, shops and public toilets, where many shops have upgraded their payment options where previously they only accepted cash, many have modernised and installed card payments.

So yes, it’s been affected, but the most notable negative impact is that businesses are losing trade as less folk are spending money in restaurants, shops and tourist hotspots, so whilst there is an increase in visitors to the Highlands, there is a decrease in money being spent.

All in all, the North has been doing a fantastic job with its Covid-19 precautions, they’re taking it seriously and making sure visitors are safe.

Watch video interview here Betty Jones Alston was paralyzed from the waist down this January due to multiple sclerosis which she was diagnosed with in 1990. She had begun dropping things and attributed it to being very busy and worn down directing a food ministry and prison ministry, but it was not so.

But she is walking again and on a recent chilly spring day, she was methodically making her way down the steep entrance steps of the J.S. Jenks School after a meeting about her grandson, a student. She placed her three-footed aluminum cane on the step below her before taking each step.

Also afflicted with lupus Minister Alston credits her faith, positive attitude and taking control of her body for enabling her to continue to lead an active life. She also sings gospel but due to a recent illness, was not able to sing in the accompanying video.
