Utata's summer project 2015 invites breaking compositional rules. This skewed view of a superhero mask workshop was the first I attempted.

Off with their heads—carefully frame your photograph … then droop the lens a little so that all the heads are chopped out of the frame
APS film cameras were, for a time, the most compact. It was the only convenient way to carry a camera at all times. I did not know of the balloon tradition before visiting the (then) Daiei Hawks baseball game in 1998. Everyone was given a balloon, and all were inflated in anticipation of the 'crowd participation' moment.

The Harris shutter effect combines different color layers from three successive shots to give colored ghosts to moving elements. This series of frames was taken hand-held as the surf broke on the shore and required alignment correction (I used Picturewindow pro).

This camera doesn't do high contrast scenes well. The image was exposed for the highlights, giving the nifty light grey wind-swept details, as indicated by Luminous Landscape's ETTR tutorial. The dark areas of the image required aggressive noise reduction (Noiseware) to clean up the dark hiker.

This truss bridge, dating to 1938, has finally lost all appeals and will be demolished. Traffic causes it to shake so badly that high shutter speeds are needed for a clear photo. At least the nearby railroad bridge will survive:

Update 2009:
The Earhart bridge is scheduled for replacement by a modern four-lane span with construction starting in 2009. The old span will be made available to anyone who can move it to a new location. Anybody need a beautiful bridge?

I was looking for a different book, with a decidedly SF cover, but found one with a drawing of hippies on the cover. I also discovered that most of my original idea was lousy.

Details
Tamagawa Taiko performance 4/11/2007 at Swarthmore college. The reflection becomes more interesting upon noticing the trees behind. No flash and automatic setting allowed some blurring. Straightened and cropped, but otherwise unedited.

Tamagawa University Taiko and Dance corps (Tamagawa Taiko) performance 4/14/2014 at Ursinus College. Women are permitted to play a small variety of drums while appearing in feminine garb. Larger set pieces with players dressed in traditionally masculine costume can have women participating, but they are not given the same prominence as the males (no solos to attract attention, not positioned in most visible front rank, not providing the occasional yell that punctuates the physical routine).
I was revisiting older images during a free trial of Topaz clarity and found this portrait. I neglected to make it public but Flickr's camera roll helped me discover and remedy that. The "portrait 1" preset in clarity was used to enhance contrast.

Tamagawa University Taiko and Dance Group (Tamagawa Taiko) performance 4/4/2007 at Ursinus College. Photos were taken, with varying degrees of success, using full auto setting and available light. Some motion artifacts were desirable, others were too extreme.
I had an early Thursday walk this week, planning to make Harris shutter effect photos. A person walking past a busy mural was selected as a visual reference and made to stand out by an absence of detail.
Details
This modified Harris Shutter Effect image generates colored "ghosts" on a black background. Things that move and other registration differences between three more-or-less sequential photos are emphasized while static features turn black. Imperfect registration can leave a faint outline of background details.

Processing note: This camera defaults to high ISO and needs noise reduction (DXO prime). Color enhanced with DXO Filmpack (Provia 100 preset).
I tried to take 'action' shots with my SP550UZ. It was a resounding disappointment - it is very difficult to set the focus properly and quickly. I was also shooting a roll of Fomapan in another camera. I can't wait to see how that develops.

Background
A weekend visit to Syracuse, NY's Museum of Science and Technology brought an unexpected discovery: A collection of vintage medicines in a circa 1900 apothecary shop setting. It is not interesting to kids - I saw none even venture through the door. Adults, however, are treated to fascinating history and can view the various elixirs, tonics, and cures from the past century. One can easily Google a list of dangerous drugs that were once prescribed as medicine. This is a much better "hands on" examination of unregulated medicine. Careful perusal of a locked display case finds several infamous items including radium pills, chocolate coated strychnine tablets, morphine laced baby 'soothing syrup' and various mystery "elixirs" with unidentified contents. The knowledgeable guides will happily bring forth various items in the collection for close perusal while discussing them in context of the time it was produced.

Iron Photographer 216 has me wondering about double exposures. This composite uses different sized images from two different cameras.
Technical trivia:
Double exposure, done digitally, is an additive rather than averaging (e.g. blending) process. Composite images will be overexposed unless the exposure value of one (or both) is reduced before blending.

The Masonic temple in Atchison, KS was open for viewing one day in July. The main chamber has several stained glass windows and free standing Masonic themed pieces. The windows are not visible from outside nor are they lighted naturally due to protective exterior metal blinds, installed to protect them from breaking in high wind. This stained glass window was back lit with incandescent lights and front lit with fluorescent.
Nestled among the trees, on an out-of-the-way stretch of Gerloff road (Lower Frederick Twp, PA) stands an interesting bridge that managed to avoid the wrecking ball. Built in 1888 by the Phoenix bridge company the structure was deemed unsafe for existing traffic by 1970. It wasn't immediately demolished, allowing supporters time to get it listed on the National Regiister of Historic Places in 1988. This wouldn't prevent removing an unsafe structure, but did help delay it while alternatives were explored. An image at bridgehunter.com shows the overgrown structure circa 1998. Rehabilitation involved engineering a steel-tied arch to bear all of the weight of the deck, relieving stress without replacing the truss. Augmenting the structure could not be avoided, but the character of the original was essentially maintained. A contemporary arch bridge by the same company could be considered an inspiration for this design. A brief history of the structure is given in a special citation for historic preservation.

hhistory08 shows the related walnut street bridge in Harrisburg, PA. This is the largest surviving example of this type of truss bridge, with 15 spans, and is now limited to pedestrian traffic.
The image is out of focus by design, perhaps a bit too far. The expressions and the kid with sunglasses made this the best version.

Several others have posted images of the library, inside and out. But none gave the impression of the massive card catalogs filling the main room. Several cul-de-sacs like this one branched from the main aisle. (Europe)

Thursday walk 488
I managed only one image this busy day while crossing a parking lot. I ran it through Poladroid, allowing it to crop as it pleased. The gaudy colors are native and not a function of processing.

I love the art of drag, I love bold makeup artistry, and my queer identity is something that is important to me. This set is based on some of my favourite drag looks I've done for myself for fun, and I'm really looking forward to bringing more, different looks to SL (though I won't be just re-creating existing queens' makeup styles/looks 1:1 ofc, but my own style is definitely influenced by Trixie Mattel, Kim Chi, Twiggy and some others)
