Three frames taken hand-held were registered before abstracting red, green, and blue channels from sequential images. These were recombined to generate an image. Dark level enhancement, outlined here, was followed by darkening and altering the hue of the yellow artifact (ghost). This was achieved by blending with one of the original images (the last) using the Hard Light transformation.

This modified Harris Shutter Effect (HSE) image emphasizes differences between three sequential photos while turning static features black. Image registration on the moving bicycle introduced registration shift for other features in successive images. Warping to align the cyclist caused it to be dark while other features became colorful. (due to poor registration as they change size and location).

Utata's Iron Photographer Challenge 289 requests:
1. Shot from underneath something, a railroad bridge
2. A repeated pattern, stripes (on the bridge, re-used element fail)
3. Intense color, added after the fact

I had not posted this image because it didn't work the way I wanted. But Flickr deemed it "serene" so I thought to share it. It is a shame that it predates the 2015 Utata summer project (Utata does it wrong breaks the rules).
Serendipity: Upon posting this appeared adjacent to Dara Meybodi's image Simplicity, seeming to be the light reflected on the leaves.

New Original Painting that I did last night! I am anticipating this season soooo much. Autumn is very much welcome in my home :)
A reflection on the window had me imagine the two scenes purposefully interacting. I used it as a Utatamino, connecting the form of the shadowy tree branches with the wispy hair of a toy horse in the preceding image.
The Harris shutter effect combines different color layers from three successive shots to give colored ghosts to moving elements. This series of frames was taken hand-held as the surf broke on the shore and required alignment correction (I used Picturewindow pro).
Peruse the Rehoboth Beach Harris shutter effect project.
The elements of Utata's Iron Photographer 201 should include:
1 - something soft (cotton balls, carpet)
2 - something roundish (candy dish)
3 - Orton effect (Picasa's Ortonish)
The rainbow resulted from beveled glass in a nearby window. The "Ortonish" effect most noticeably blurs the etchings in the crystal, making it appear more spherical. When viewed small the hollow sphere brings to mind the pinhole eye of a chameleon.

Method:
A modified subtractive filter composite was generated from three successive images:
- images 1, 2, and 3 were registered (to compensate for camera movement)
- one R, G, or B color layer in image 1 was replaced with the corresponding layer from image 3
- a different color layer in image 2 was replaced with the corresponding layer from image 3
- the modified image 1 was subtracted from the modified image 2 (absolute difference)

Technical Trivia :
The Harris shutter effect, done digitally, combines color layers from three different photographs. Things that move between exposures appear as colored ghosts.
With eyes the burned in the darkness
And passion that warmed the night
She spun that flame, fast and bright.
I saw magentas, oranges and greens
Flashing in that liminal space
Then she was gone, without a trace.

I was inspired to try looking at my surroundings differently after viewing Tetsuo5's stream which is rich with extraordinary photos of the neighborhoods he visits.
Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.
Proverbs 27:10 King James Version
If you stick your camera out the window on a drive, motion artifacts are expected. On a straight bit of road, this can lead to converging lines, interesting in an abstract way. If I could look through the viewfinder safely, which I can't, I'd move the point of convergence to a better place.

Made for Utata's Weekend Project: "Fragments" (Sept 9th-23rd)
Utata's summer project 2015 invites breaking compositional rules. This view of children playing in a fountain was backlit by the morning sun.
Project category:
Off with their heads—carefully frame your photograph … then droop the lens a little so that all the heads are chopped out of the frame
The "headless" criterion was met by consideration of Esther's 83% rule, which works out to about 5/6 sans head.
I was allowed to take a few pictures of the back shelf.
Background
A weekend visit to Syracuse, NY's Museum of Science and Technology brought an unexpected discovery: A collection of vintage medicines in a circa 1900 apothecary shop setting. It is not interesting to kids - I saw none even venture through the door. Adults, however, are treated to fascinating history and can view the various elixirs, tonics, and cures from the past century. One can easily Google a list of dangerous drugs that were once prescribed as medicine. This is a much better "hands on" examination of unregulated medicine. Careful perusal of a locked display case finds several infamous items including radium pills, chocolate coated strychnine tablets, morphine laced baby 'soothing syrup' and various mystery "elixirs" with unidentified contents. The knowledgeable guides will happily bring forth various items in the collection for close perusal while discussing them in context of the time it was produced.
I took a short walk uptown after the largest gatherings had dispersed. I am interested in seeing these artworks in context, before the plywood is removed.
The door panel reads, "Nothing left to steal except some La Croix. If you are thirsty call me and I'll get one."

Gouache and charcoal on paper
Following my trip to Aix en Provence last month (February 2010). Have made a series of charcoal/ink and gouache studies after a number of Cezanne's paintings. I have not paid note of the colour of these works, which would be a study in itself, rather I've concentrated on the dynamic surfaces and forms. at present I'm working on a series of landscape paintings and hope to incorporate some of these ideas into my own work.
Throughout my life I have made copies after paintings and find they are a great way to stimulate one's own imaginative life and creativity. Once recorded in a digital way further work is also possible.

Nestled among the trees, on an out-of-the-way stretch of Gerloff road (Lower Frederick Twp, PA) stands an interesting bridge that managed to avoid the wrecking ball. Built in 1888 by the Phoenix bridge company the structure was deemed unsafe for existing traffic by 1970. It wasn't immediately demolished, allowing supporters time to get it listed on the National Regiister of Historic Places in 1988. This wouldn't prevent removing an unsafe structure, but did help delay it while alternatives were explored. An image at bridgehunter.com shows the overgrown structure circa 1998. Rehabilitation involved engineering a steel-tied arch to bear all of the weight of the deck, relieving stress without replacing the truss. Augmenting the structure could not be avoided, but the character of the original was essentially maintained. A contemporary arch bridge by the same company could be considered an inspiration for this design. A brief history of the structure is given in a special citation for historic preservation.
Elsewhere on Flickr:
cmh2315fl shows a similar truss bridge in Virginia that hasn't been modified with an arch.
hhistory08 shows the related walnut street bridge in Harrisburg, PA. This is the largest surviving example of this type of truss bridge, with 15 spans, and is now limited to pedestrian traffic.
