Technical Trivia
Three sequential images were corrected for distortion (Olympus Master 2) and registered (PictureWindow Pro) before combining as the red, green, and blue channels of a composite image. Slight camera movement prevented perfect registration of features at the bottom left of the image.

Mount Union, PA.
The old dual gauge railroad tracks still run throughout the Orbisonia/Mount Union area. Two different track widths were necessary to accommodate standard rail stock and coal cars from nearby mines. Here, in Mount Union, PA, the old rail line still stretches through town. No longer in use, it is a common pedestrian path (I met several people) and kids play on the tracks without concern.

Utata's Iron Photographer challenge #224 inspires photos with the following elements:
1 - something to drink (rum, for some)
2 - a note to self (while cooking)
3 - soft color (vibrance, saturation turned down)
The "soft color" component is poorly defined, so I chose a pastel post-it then, in lightroom, turned down vibrance and saturation by 20%.

Background
In 2007 I happened upon an evening parade in Huntingdon, PA. The annual Halloween parade was scheduled for 8:00 on a Wednesday night, after dark and during intermittent drizzely rain. The conditions were very poor for photography with the slow camera at hand (Olympus SP550UZ) but a few had some interesting qualities. Aiming towards a bright reflection on the street in this case made individuals indistinct and emphasized shadows. Combining these for a Harris shutter effect emphasized colors in the bright reflection while muting them elsewhere.

Technical Trivia
Three sequential images were corrected for distortion (Olympus Master 2) and registered (PictureWindow Pro) before abstracting red, green, and blue channels from different images. Note that the images do not register precisely do to excessive camera movements. These were recombined (PictureWindow Pro), aggressive noise reduction was applied (Noiseware Pro) then the image was cropped. The image before cropping appears below.

Stereo realist loaded with Kodak Ultramax 400. Contrast was enhanced using DXO Filmpack 3 (Fuji Reala 50 preset)
I am curious to find interesting ways of capturing the details at Washington's chapel in Valley Forge. The kneeling soldiers on the choir pews, for example, are often lost among more prominent features. The XZ-1 allows sufficiently shallow depth of field and low light sensitivity to selectively focus on either figure, for emphasis, but the artificial lighting gives bright reflections from several of the most interesting views. Also, this aspect of the soldiers is in shadow. Here, three exposures (+1.3ev,0ev,-1.3ev) were generated from a single RAW and fused, to darken the extreme highlights and brighten the shadows.
Artist Vaughn Schultz had an installation at the Muchnic Art Gallery, Atchison, KS. This young man was impressed by the exhibit.

A recent trip to Powell Gardens (Kingsville, MO) during a hot summer day found hordes of fascinating dragonflies around the lake. This is a common Widow Skimmer (Libellula luctuosa). The blue-white bands midwing indicate it is a male.
Dragonflies can be distinguished from damselflies by the orientation of the wings at rest. Dragonflies lay wings flat and perpendicular to the body but damselflies hold them parallel to the body.

Details and history:
The National Parks Service identifies old trees that were present during important events in US history, collectively designating them Witness trees. This sycamore at Pawlings farm was one of the few trees not harvested by the continental army during the winter encampment of 1777 and is older than the nation.
A tree survey of Valley Forge park indicates these dimensions: circumference, 21.4 ft (6.5 m); height: 82.9 ft (25.3 m); spread: 142 ft (43.3 m). There are no people in the photo to indicate scale as the area around the tree is closed to the public. This is likely for the tree's protection but it could also be to guard visitors from falling branches. Several are larger than many free standing trees and some, trailing out of frame to the left, are so massive they rest on the ground.
For scale: the door of the adjacent building, if it is standard size, should be slightly taller and wider than an adult.

This tiny plant, possibly gray-green wood sorrel (oxalis dillenii), grows from a crack in a retaining wall. The environment is extremely bright, possibly enough to destroy chlorophyll, causing anthocyanin production to avoid damage. These pigments are concentrated in the chloroplasts to shield the fragile light-harvesting molecules. In normal environments the heart-shaped leaves of this species are vibrant green and the flowers yellow.

A blooming linden tree attracts multitudes of insects. Some seem to eat themselves into torpor while others are too busy to be bothered by my encroaching camera.
Shallow depth of field only allowed the part of the bee nearest the lens to be in focus.

Why ice milk? Cream was hard to come by, and the grainy texture of the ice crystals give it a distinct mouth feel.

This modified Harris Shutter Effect image emphasizes things that move and other differences between three more-or-less sequential photos while turning the background black. In this instance, the black background appears unchanged, but the light areas are color shifted.

The originally uploaded image was replaced with a brighter one (EV=+0.7) to enhance the figures.
The Masonic temple in Atchison, KS was open for viewing one day in July. The main chamber has several stained glass windows and free standing Masonic themed pieces. The windows are not visible from outside nor are they lighted naturally due to protective exterior metal blinds, installed to protect them from breaking in high wind (according to a master mason answering questions). This window was back lit with an unknown light and front lit with fluorescent and yellow light from the overhead dome. White balancing for incandescent seemed to best remove a color cast..
The central image is flanked by two Order of the Eastern Star (OES) emblems. The meaning of the central figure was not explained, but may be (edit: was identified as) Adah (Jepthah's daughter), a notable emblem (heroine?) of sacrifice. Note that there is controversy over translation that leads to more comfortable interpretations of the legend (see section Human sacrifice entry headed Levant

This unusual car, presumably for inspecting the rails, is preserved outside the station at Sinaia, Romania. (Europe)

The crumbly, flaking paint on the frame makes the curtains seem old, as they likely are. This is cropped from a larger image.
I was inspired to try looking at my surroundings differently after viewing Tetsuo5's stream which is rich with extraordinary photos of the neighborhoods he visits.
Robert Frost no doubt would have parked and pondered, "why is this swampy spot at the top of a hill?" Or, possibly, "Why have these trees at the top of a hill drowned?"
This brings to mind Inspector Grandpierre in the film Charade, who began an investigation saying, "A man drowned in his bed -- impossible!"
