This unsuccessful experiment sought to balance overexposure, to visualize an interior coffee pot and mustard bottle, with post processing to restore details.

Regrettably, I couldn't manage a properly frothy lather to enhance the notional nibbling.

3. Instant film, or instant looking (poladroid)
Poladroid beta version can still be found on the internet, and will launch properly if you set your computer clock back. I set mine to 2010.
Pro soap tip: bars tend to be crumbly until hydrated. Should have tried that to get a good bite pattern with clear tooth marks.

The exercise challenges one to make something interesting from things nearby. In my case, this means finding some way to beautify or hide an unattractive apartment complex and a flat,empty sky.
Solution:
Focus low to eliminate as much sky as possible.
Use slow shutter speed, large aperture, camera close to the ground and move towards the subject. This motion makes a far stationary subject imperceptably larger while close elements blur. This poor "man's dolly shot" gives a kinetic feel to foreground elements while directing attention to the central area of greatest sharpness. The effect is similar to a zoom blur (poor man's zoom blur?) but can be accomplished when auto focus can't be disabled.
Utata's Iron Photographer 219 stayed around for another week.

Ursinus College hosted the Grizzly Classic track & field competition on 4/21/2012. The black wall provided an ideal background for the Harris shutter effect, a multiple exposure method useful for dynamic scenes.

Technical Trivia
Three sequential images were corrected for distortion and registered before abstracting red, green, and blue channels from different images. These were recombined to generate this image.
Problem: The burst mode on my camera reduces resolution and makes the color less pleasing. This was offset by aggressive black level enhancement:
- Generate a copy
- Use 'curves' tool to set bottom 15% of colors to black (V in HSV color space)
- Composite with original using soft light transformation at 50% opacity.
Saturation was increased by 7% to accentuate the blue "ghost" before noise reduction.
This version enhanced with tiltshiftmaker better isolates the central action.
I actually prefer the version with motion blur, as it evokes the atmosphere of the place.
This is the long-winded recollection of my visit. The photo has no people out of courtesy to the dining throng.
I love North American Diners. The proper ones, with a hand written sign on the door reading "CASH ONLY". They have a certain intimate ambiance you can't find at a chain. There are those that attempt to recreate it, most notoriously the Cheescake Factory and its artificially long wait times. If you find yourself in a tiny local eatery the dearth of seating drives the crowd to wait at the door for a treasured opening.
The fare need not be critiqued in detail. There are the standard breakfasty items, seemingly constant lunchy choices, and no sidelong glances if you dare to mix the two.
Mother's cupboard (Syracuse, NY) is one of these tiny, out of the way places with an esteemed reputation. Most customers report the humongous breakfasts, the 30cm (12 in) pancakes, and the like. But I am always impressed with an establishment offering an egg on its burger without a special order. Soft center? No problem. McDonalds won't do that.
And establishments of this nature are proud of their cooking. The cooking is a show of itself. The heavily tattooed chefs weave a glorious ballet in their tiny space, as waitresses squeeze past to reach the other end of the counter. There is no microwave needed - everything gets cooked on the grill and stays hot there until it is plated and served. My order was the only burger on the grill and was assembled, all but the veggies, as soon as the over easy egg was done. But the bacon was not ready. So the lofty stack waited at the front, gently toasting the bun further, as the final browning was applied. By the time it arrived I was too hungry to pose the food for a proper profile - thus you see none of the beef in the sandwich above. Rest assured that the ample meat lies beneath the generous helping of bacon, cheese, and egg. The sizable sandwich rests on a standard 30cm (12 in) dinner plate without frivolous padding with fries - but they are available if you are especially voracious.
I like watching the cook because I hope to learn things. I make pancakes regularly but not of the grand size they do. Their batter has consistency similar to mine but the final product is taller than one might expect. I'll have to check if extra leavening makes a difference when embiggening my hotcakes.
I make potatoes frequently as well. But I had not before thought of applying liberal quantities of paprika. It gives nice color and, likely, a distinctive taste.

Looking for abstract compositions in a gymnasium stairwell. This image was generated using the in camera multiple exposure function, which requires the second image to be added within one minute of the first or it "forgets" it.

Details:
Lycogala epidendrum, (wolf's milk or groening's slime) forms small clusters of textured orange spheres that ooze orange slime when punctured.

I failed to notice the glare as I concentrated on the subject. Superimposed portraits seems like a Rorschach test.
The earth has receded from the edges of an original concrete rain gutter over the last century, or been removed when replacing the stairway and walk, making it seem like a raised pedestal or dish. Someone had placed this mushroom there, admired it, then wandered off and forgotten about it.
Contrast enhanced with a "Daidoish" preset (contrast 90+, clear view 50+, blacks -40 or less, color level adjustments and color filter added, tone curve adjusted to crush blacks and blow highlights)
I went to watch the sunrise and was surprised these bird dogs were very quiet, intently staring at a critter in the tree above (instead of barking at me).
Daylight white balance was used for most accurate color.

There were many individual examples of this, widely dispersed along a 1.5km Great Lakes trail.
I recently learned that the diner car in downtown St. Paul closed during lockdown, and will likely never reopen - so I'm collecting memories of another old-timey spot Al's Breakfast by visiting and taking photos. It is cozy in a way modern building codes do not allow, forcing a sense of community on patrons who happily chat while awaiting their meals. I once heard former owner Doug Grina characterize it as a labor of love that is not as profitable as a larger establishment can be.

Note to self: I talked to a gentleman about cameras on this day, and recall him using a Contax T1. I re-examined the series and realize I want to aim for one, too. Unlike the later T2 and T3 models it has no onboard flash and is one of the smallest serious film cameras you can find.

Details
These were found growing at the base of a sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatinus) and had turned orange after two days. Some newer specimens were still changing and had a mottled red on orange appearance.

This modified Harris Shutter Effect image of Karate practice emphasizes things that move and other differences between three sequential photos while turning the background black.
I managed to get a very low shutter speed from this camera with ISO100 and high zoom. I collected a series of images, hoping to find interesting blurring.

An aging schizophyllum commune grows vertically from a fallen log in the Audubon sanctuary. Tom Volk's mushroom of the month (February, 2000) gives an interesting summary, including the existence of over 28,000 distinct sexes.
How to make it: Two images taken with the cha-cha method (moving camera) were aligned and the gif was generated in stereophotomaker.
Who needs an umbrella when laughing in the rain? I was looking for rain streaks against the dark back of the far fellow when this couple strolled into the frame.

I hung an old album cover on the wall, using the hole punched in it when it was discounted for sale decades ago. I took an abused record from Goodwill, useless for little more than throwing as a Frisbee, and placed a flashlight on it to highlight the dust. These completely wrong uses of the media seemed suited for the title of Thelma Houston's Don't leave me this way.
Several images were captured using focus bracketing, then two were crudely composited to give this image.
Utata's Weekend Project theme for Sept. 30th - Oct 13th, 2018 is "Icon". I chose 1960's pop culture for its distinctive style. This version is with the posters aglow under a low power black (UV) light. The "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" poster is not fluorescent, sadly.
The idea was most likely inspired by Rachel's poster rich image Korok.
Some of these posters do not have exemplars elsewhere on the internet and none have the fuzzy texture of modern black light posters. Here is their info:

The candles overpower the bluish fluorescent tonic ice.

The layers of water and tonic are not well resolved because they were grown too quickly. This allowed part of the sublayer to dissolve in the top layer before it froze.
