College students include chemical structures in their graffiti.

Processing note: Daidoish contrast adjustment (adjust curves to blow highlights, clip blacks) followed by Analog Efex (classic camera 5 preset). This combination happened to make the graffiti a lurid red.

I was walking through a railroad underpass one rainy day and noticed a passing pedestrian, so took an intentionally blurred photo. It was only at home that I noticed the graffiti, which lends a menacing underworld vibe.

Processing note: The low-key image was finished in Topaz Studio, using the KC Sunset preset with 20% normal blending mode, accentuating the walls and light glare.

slow shutter speed, large aperture, camera close to the ground and movING towards the subject makes a poor "man's dolly shot", giving a kinetic feel to foreground elements while directing attention to the central area of greatest sharpness. The effect is similar to a zoom blur (poor man's zoom blur?) but can be accomplished when auto focus can't be disabled.

In American sports a benched player is not participating in the game. These shoes were removed while practicing in the dojo (high key).

This was an exercise in photographing a subject (shoe) from an obstructed perspective, necessitating imagining the camera's perspective while focusing and framing.

Processing Note:

Two different high key images were prepared in Silver Efex pro with good details in different areas, so these were blended to give the result. This was necessary to preserve legibility of the Converse All Star logo (without local doctoring).

I first learned of Lee Friedlander's selfies and shadow selfies from Eric Kim's street photography composition tutorial, lesson 9:

erickimphotography.com/blog/2013/11/11/street-photography...

I sought to imitate his technique for Macro Monday's 6/2/25 challenge "Watch".

A polarizing filter was used.

Processing note

I was shooting towards the sun, expecting the camera meter to be overwhelmed, and much detail to be underexposed. The benefit I saw was the bright reflection highlighting the rails to the horizon. The RAW image has very little contrast between the greenery, the browns, and the backs of the kids. Monochrome conversion with Silver Efex (cool tones 1 preset) gave good subject/background separation and darkened the edges sufficiently to obviate cropping of distracting elements.

Utata's weekend project asks us to seek out "unintended art" in its diverse forms. This image was generated from a rainy day photo walk a couple of months back, as the allowed archival shot.

Chasing raindrop splashes with the high speed JPG mode (High speed 1, 15 FPS at 3MP) trading FPS for resolution.

This camera needs noise reduction. I used DXO prime. Contrast enhanced with DXO filmpack (AGFA Scala preset) yellow filter and a homemade Daidoish adjustment (exposure, contrast, and clear-view increased; blacks increased and whites decreased in curves to clip blacks and highlights).

Bell & Howell (Canon) Dial 35 (this one)

4 year expired Kodak gold 400

Shutter priority (1/125), focus distance approx 7-10', aperture ?

Camera thoughts:

The camera meter is accurate enough for flatly lit subjects but is unsurprisingly fooled by backlit subjects or large bright spots. This image was made to see how a high dynamic range subject might look as the underexposed areas fall apart. Noise in the dark, underexposed areas is expected to be bad and is unpleasant. My older noise reduction software cannot deal with it without heavy detail smudging.

The second problem, distortion of nearby objects due to a (relatively) tilted focal plane, is also obvious. Here, the distance is 10-15 feet.

I suspect B&W film would be more pleasing, to my eye, when using the built in light meter to judge a scene. A straightened version with Agfa APX 25 BW filter applied in DXO filmpack is below for comparison.

Conclusion: This camera is quite limited in features. There are only four shutter speeds (1/30, 1/80, 1/125, 1/250) but these are paired with an aperture covering f2.8-f22 on 28mm lens. Fast film on bright days can be overexposed and slow film in dark situations can be underexposed with these limitations. But I found it was actually fun to carry and use this camera, much like the Canon IXUS/Elph and I got some photos I might otherwise have missed - along with several I will never look at again. Learning to accurately judge distance in low light situations will be a bit of a problem, so I imagine my common use will be in daylight with a fine grained BW film. It will be fun to eventually add a flash and explore the possibilities.

Several people have reviewed this re-badged camera, or the Canon original, online. I'd suggest Mike Eckman for one who does it better than me:

Utata's Iron Photographer Challenge 302 requests:

1. A Tub (washing machine)

2. A Warming Beverage (cocoa, albeit blown out)

3. A large area of negative space (subjectively large)

The morning fog is so thick that, occasionally, you can see a cloud of droplets wafting through the air. This morning the sun cooperated, briefly giving backlit sunbeams. A blurred car seemed better suited to the scene than a sharp one, thus low shutter speed was used.

(Processing: Lightroom was used to correct distortion, exposure, and straighten before Kodak Tri-X film was simulated with DXO Filmpack)

I named this after a Bob Dylan song at the instigation of UTATA's iron photographer 101 challenge, needing to include:

1 - pavement

2 - a shadow (non-human)

3 - title from a Dylan song

Otherwise this would be "Morning fog (1 of 3)"

How to make it:

This image resulted from practice, although I didn't know I was practicing at the time. I had several foggy days to tinker with. Early on I found the contrast under the trees was interesting. When the opportunity to shoot sunbeams arose I tried it with just trees. I liked that but it seemed out of balance, even without the sun in frame. I was on a busy road, so I added passing cars to the image. None made it better until I tried blurring. I thought I had my image but, to be certain, I tried several with the sun in frame and found this. In short: I found something I liked (sunbeams) and tried more variations than I thought I needed before the opportunity was gone.
