Well, and after the creation of the island, people came to it and started building houses and villages with their churches.
The sea was their friend, but at the same time their enemy because on the one hand they provided a source of income through fishing, but on the other hand the sea had its terrible quirks and she could rage like a raging rage and devourded houses, villages in short everything what got in her way and therefore also people.
And in order to avoid the seething desolation of the sea, dikes were always built higher, higher and higher, so that you no longer see the villages from the sea side, except for a small part of the church tower........
that's the day i was born and hence, i had a birthday on april 9th, 2009! AHHHH!
it was a fun day. though it ended with bloatedness after drinking a soy chai at a restaurant. it was the powder mix chai, which, from experience, tends to be laden with dairy... Oh NOES! . . .
in any case, it was still fun. a guy gave me a HUGE purple cellophane wrapped basket of homemade peanut butter cookies he made himself, pretty white roses, funny balloons, and a card about BOOTYBUTTS (the card i received at work was about a toilet and poo... ironic much?)! his mom got me a to-die-for gift card to starbuck's (i whole-heartedly support the local coffee and tea shops, but sometimes, they just aren't around when you need 'em the most!)
then he and i went out to breakfast/lunch/brunch/whatever you wanna call it at T.C. Eggington's. they have great vegetarian choices... "portobellini"... yum! on the way to breakfast, we saw a mother and her tiny baby ducks by the freeway in the puddle-y canal/gutter/whatever you wanna call that. it was cool because it was my birthday and they were cute, yet odd because it was by a freeway and not in a park, or in my school's irrigation or something. them duckies must be suffering economically too, eh?
so after that, i contemplated going back home to work on a commedia dell'arte mask for theatre class, but decided to just veg and hang with this guy at his apartment (i find vegging out, doing nothing a bit difficult to do sometimes).
later on, we met up with my parents to eat dinner at the Euro Cafe in Gilbert, AZ. a great foodsie greeky place. and that's where, you know, *ahem*... the soy-chai-laden-with-dairy-omg-why-did-i-order-this fiasco happened. so after dinner, with all of us feeling like cows (even though i hardly ate anything and they ate like contestants in a hotdog eating contest), we went to Wal-Mart of all places. i'm particularly NOT a Wal-Mart fan, but since i was at Wal-Mart and it might be cheaper than at other places, i bought vanilla soy ice cream because i was magnetized/hankering for some.
we finally headed home around 11pm, after which i quickly shoved this guy out the door and kissed him goodbye, so i could heat up some of those peanut butter cookies and WHAM BAM!... inhale hot cookies n' ice cream. mmmmmmmmmm... no cake this year. and i wanted it that way. no one even sang to me either i noticed, but that's perfectly ok. it's not a crime. wait wait...i take that back: he played the weird al birthday song... so essentially, i was sung to in mp3 format. :)
oh yeah, and at work today for my 'employee birthday'... i made up fruit, granola, & yogurt parfaits for everyone. someone bought all the ingredients (i requested it instead of birthday cake), and i went right to work -- whipping up those babies during my lunch break. i was so amazed some people didn't know what a parfait was or how to make them.
well, now they know :)
suffice to say, i'm on a parfait kick now. i hadn't had one in a year before that day. soy yogurt though. yes, please. :)

(I had misidentified these as Western Sandpipers, but the particularly long drooping bill marks these as Dunlins.)

Escape to the Gardens of Chartwell..Visiting involves following a one way system which begins at the entrance to the gardens. Its easy to follow and is actually a good way of seeing everything. This doesn’t meant you can’t wander amongst flower beds at will, it just creates an order and a safe way of viewing the gardens.The garden is a lovely mix of formal areas, wild meadows, orchard and beds thick with the scent of summer flowers.

The Château of Modave (French: Château de Modave), also known as the Château des Comtes de Marchin (Château of the Counts of Marchin) is a château near the village of Modave in the province of Liège, Belgium.
The oldest part of the building, the donjon, was built on a strategic rock high above the valley of the river Hoyoux. The oldest parts still visible today date probably from the 13th century and were erected by the lords of Modave. In the 16th century the castle and the estate of Modave became the property of the Haultepenne and de Saint-Fontaine families.
In the next century Jean-Gaspard-Ferdinand de Marchin (1601–1673), a great military commander, acquired the castle and turned it from a medieval fortress into a luxury Baroque residence. His son Ferdinand de Marsin neglected the property and lived in France.
Later owners were successively:
Maximilian Henry of Bavaria, Elector of Cologne and Prince-Bishop of Liège (1682–1684);
Cardinal William Egon of Furstenberg, and his heirs (1684–1706);
Baron Arnold de Ville (1706–1772); and
Anne-Léon, Duke of Montmorency, and his heirs (1772–1817).
In the 19th century it was owned by the non-noble families of Lamarche, Braconier and Van Hoegaerden. Finally, the Compagnie Intercommunale Bruxelloise des Eaux ("Brussels Intercommunal Water Company") bought the property in March 1941, in order to protect the important water catchments in the park. The company still owns the château today and has been restoring it with great care. It is open for visitors from April until October and it is also used as a prestigious venue for concerts and receptions.

Some additional details on my blog.
Ok, yes, I spent some time there this year, guilty. You have to go a bunch of times in order to get the light you want. I have gone several times this year and only really had one day of good light, and that was only for about 10 minutes.
This image is from one of those bad light days. When you have bad light, you get close. I don't do a lot of macro or close up work, but my wife loves it when I do. It had been raining this early morning and I wanted to capitalize on that.

Vista de la localidad ribereña desde la ladera del cerro de San Jorge, completamente horadado de bodegas subterráneas en las que se envejece el mejor vino de la Ribera del Duero.
A la izquierda de la imagen tenemos una zarcera, que es un hueco que va desde la superficie hasta la bodega con el fin de ventilar y regular la temperatura.
Estos respiraderos, suelen estar protegidos por conos de piedra que sobresalen del suelo llegando en la mayoría de los casos a sobrepasar los dos metros de altura. Así se evita también la caída de tierra vegetal y de personas.

To the left of the image we have a "zarcera", which is a hole that goes from the surface to the cellar in order to ventilate and regulate the temperature.
These vents are usually protected by stone cones that protrude from the ground, in most cases exceeding two meters in height. This also prevents the fall of topsoil and people.

Eastbound coal moves through this little town (there weren't any other kind!) on the Alliance Division's Third Subdivision. A while back I posted a shot of a pair of SD9's on the "Newcastle Bullet" local here, with the depot yet displaying train order signals. That was six years ago from this shot; CTC is installed, as well as a lot of Two Main Tracks, and the depot is a memory.
Today, the terrestrial order, the order of the earth, is coming to an end. It is being succeeded by the digital order. Heidegger was the last thinker of the terrestrial order. Death and pain do not belong to the digital order. They represent disturbances. Mourning and longing are also suspicious. The pain of the nearness of distance is alien to the digital order. Distance is inscribed into nearness. The digital order transforms nearness into the absence of distance, so that it is no longer painful. Under the compulsion of availability, everything is rendered accessible and consumable. The digital habitus is: everything must be available at once. The telos of the digital order is total availability. This order lacks the 'slowness of the hesitant shyness in the face of what cannot be done'.
