Northern's 156408 passes through the rock hewn cutting between Ince & Elton and Stanlow on 23rd August 2025 with 2F16 1850 Helsby to Ellesmere Port.

This section of the branch from Helsby sees only four trains a day, and these are often the first casualties to be cancelled when there is a shortage of crews. A far cry from the days of heavy industry around Stanlow & Ellesmore Port, when you would be able to see many locos stabled on the depot as you passed on the M53, all ready to work oil or other commodity trains.

The light is starting to noticeably fade as August draws into September, so I thought I'd take advantage of what appeared to be good light and photograph the evening train - except that thick cloud made it not so good by the time the train went through, hence the high ISO!

My first photograph of one of the 20-strong fleet of Sapphires introduced to upgrade the No.12 service. At the time these were being used on test and hadn't yet infiltrated the coastal route. CX14 BXV (4536) pauses at Rhyl bus station. I was in the town to cover the opening of a pop-up shop that was being run by an enterprising local college student - if you needed suitable attire and key pointers for an upcoming job interview with a tough, cigar chomping director, this was the place to go. For two days.

There is only one day left, always starting over: it is given to us at dawn and taken away from us at dusk...

Born: one perfect baby, to Jiwon & Jason, TODAY at 3:28AM, May 9, 2008.

It's my daughter's birthday!

With baby scheduled for May 17, imagine our surprise when Jiwon started to go into labor just before midnight on May 7. We weren't quite ready, but labor progressed rapidly at home, and we had to head to the hospital at 4AM. From there it was 24 hours in birth room #2 at Kaiser Oakland. I'm way too tired to get into what it was like. But it was super-intense. And Jiwon's power & determination was...like nothing I've ever seen.

And now here she is, all 7 lbs. 7 oz. and 21.5 inches of her. With dark hair and almond eyes and I can hardly believe she's real.

Now we're in a recovery room, where staff keep coming to wake us up, prod the baby, check how Jiwon's healing, and try to get a name from us for the birth certificate. We don't have one. And right now, we don't care. We're exhausted, and we have everything we need.

Here's a photo of baby at age 1 minute, taken by our doula. They can look pretty weird when they first come out. She looks great now. Definitely a keeper. ;-)

On the Road, bridge, staircase, work but fun

It's true. It was such a beautifully weird weather that caught my eyes from the garden door. It was very sunny...with a passing dark cloud. Instantaneously, I fell in love with the sky.

This is the "Blue Water Bridge" that connects Michigan and Canada. I was in Port Huron, MI recently and this shot was taken in high winds, a rainey mist, and in 32 degree weather out of the car window...Brrrrrr! But it was worth every moment! Just like this picture, lot's of warm memories of being there :) Have a great week! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Water_Bridge

...and I had a monster of a camera. While cleaning some of my toy collection from a friends garage, he happened to mention that he was building a single speed bicycle. I mentioned that I had an old wheelset in my truck (and really...who doesn't?) and he mentioned that he had an old camera in his nightstand (which I found odd). Next thing I knew I had this beast in my possession. Some days are just like that.

The film box should give you a sense of the size of this beauty.

Back up Highway One.

i bought this on mother's day at a cool antique place. i love it!!!

Billy relaxing in his private cat pen. He really uses his personal refuge intensively. We have officially established that Billy is a nocturnal outdoor cat rather than an indoor one. For a long time I was able to get him back in when we went to bed, but that gradually became more difficult. Once inside, he would then wake us (read:ME) up a few hours later, forcing me to usher him out again in the middle of the night.

After a lot of broken nights we have now come to a more comfortable arrangement, both for him and for me. We now allow him to stay out at night and he rewards us by offering us a few mice every morning. When I turn the key in the back door in the morning, he mostly comes running from somewhere in the garden. More and more often he's fast asleep in this pen. Let's hope this arrangement will work out well for all concerned.

This is a one-lane tunnel on Pearson Falls Road near Saluda, NC. I definitely don't condone graffiti, but I really did like the color that it provided to this winter day.

I found these two in Spakane,Wash. on July 2,1996.
