Another portrait from my first proper encounter with a wild otter last week. I watched it for some time, hunting and eating, seemingly playing and exploring, and occasionally peeking out at me curiously. I always prefer pictures with eye contact because of the energy created from the look. Lighting was a bit tricky that day due to strong contrast, but I liked it in this setting.

My first try with sky watcher star tracker. its going to take some practice but I am impressed with it so far. Due to only driving 30 mins to this spot there is alot of light pollution from Perth but all in all a successful effort. I am excited to see how it goes once the milkyway core is visible again.

One of the first times I was hiking the hills near home, my birding friend (and range), Dan, told me that, if I wanted to see wrens, all I had to do was sit by the original ranch house, sit on a step, and wait. "Watch for the white eye bar. Oh, and while you're at it, you'll find Spotted Towhees, California Quail, Western Bluebirds, and whole herd of other creatures."
I took his advice and, sure 'nuf, five years later, I saw this Bewick's Wren by the barn. I looked in my guide book just to be sure, and as with most guides, the description of the range and the maps were entirely different. Before I give the description, just let me say that they're dying out in eastern U.S., but are alive and well from British Columbia to southern California in the west. They have one of the sweetest songs, and often vie with the House Wren when courtship occurs simultaneously. Throw in the "song" of the Oak Titmouse while you're at it.
The Bewick's wren (Thryomanes bewickii) is a wren native to North America. At about 14 cm (5.5 in) long, it is grey-brown above, white below, with a long white eyebrow. While similar in appearance to the Carolina wren, it has a long tail that is tipped in white. The song is loud and melodious, much like the song of other wrens. It lives in thickets, brush piles and hedgerows, open woodlands and scrubby areas, often near streams. It eats insects and spiders, which it gleans from vegetation or finds on the ground. And that's all that's stated describing this little wren.
