Here's the front side of Mothra. His antennae have antennae!!! Gross!! And he almost looks like an owl in his markings. I know that's an evolutionary trait of some larger moths.
BACKSTORY: This HUUUGE moth fell into our house from the back kitchen door. We called it "Mothra"; a common christening for house moths of this size. This was to be a good opportunity for Oranjello to satisfy his hunting urges, as well as to train him to hunt pests -- since we have the occasional mice and snakes (and raccoons!). It also proved to be an excellent photo-op.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg visited the National Defense University in Kyiv the day before.
They met with the students of the institution, who are undergoing professional military training courses in accordance with NATO standards. The NATO Secretary General called this one of the examples of how the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is increasingly integrating Ukraine into its structure and educational programs.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the prospects of bolstering Ukraine's air defense. The Head of State noted that thanks to the assistance of our partners, our servicemen have mastered modern Western air defense systems and no other country in the Alliance has such a large number of different types.
"Today, our experts can tell exactly which system is ideal for us and what we are lacking. Our air defense is not yet universal, it is changing and being enhanced every day. Not only with air defense systems, but also with electronic warfare, anti-drone systems, and so on," he said.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukrainian defenders of the sky today face a complex of different threats, and the struggle of technologies continues.
"I am confident that we will have modern aircraft that will also be a part of this system," he added.
For his part, Jens Stoltenberg noted that once Ukraine becomes a member of the Alliance, it will be fully integrated into the NATO air defense system.
"At the same time, we need to make you as interoperable as possible. And integrate you as much as we can," he said.
The Head of State emphasized the importance for Ukraine to receive an invitation to join the North Atlantic Alliance and spoke about the work of the NATO-Ukraine Council.
"We can convene it without any bureaucratic pauses when Ukraine needs it. This is one of the tools. Today we discussed several new tools with the Secretary General," he summarized.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Jens Stoltenberg also visited an exhibition of captured and destroyed Russian equipment on the university grounds.

Constructed between 1902 and 1904 as part of the "New Works" of the Greater Cincinnati Water Works, a major overhaul in the water service system for the city built at the turn of the 20th Century, this Neoclassical-style building stands along Riverside Drive (formerly Eastern Avenue) in Cincinnati's East End at the old Pendleton neighborhood. Six massive steam-driven plunger pump-type pumping units were originally housed within the limestone edifice, with the high-tech interior contrasting with the Classical-style exterior, which featured an intricate cornice, the city's seal, a red tile hipped roof, pedimented and arched window headers, an arched entrance porch centered on the pedimented middle pavilion of the building, Roman Lattice windows, and corinthian pilasters. The building still serves as the main pumping station for the city's water system, but, due to the flood-prone nature of the location and the importance of the sensitive equipment inside, the building has been surrounded for decades by a high concrete floodwall on all sides, reducing the ability to appreciate the beautiful facade of the building. Additionally, alterations, such as the infill of the lower row of windows with glass block and some upper windows with limestone panels, have impacted the historic character of the building. Nevertheless, it still remains a marvel of both early 20th Century engineering and architecture, a true public palace to progress.

The Mandalay Palace is the last royal palace of the last Burmese monarchy. The palace was constructed, between 1857 and 1859 as part of King Mindon's founding of the new royal capital city of Mandalay. The plan of Mandalay Palace largely follows the traditional Burmese palace design, inside a walled fort surrounded by a moat.
Mandalay Palace was the primary royal residence of King Mindon and King Thibaw, the last two kings of the country. The complex ceased to be a royal residence and seat of government on 28 November 1885 when, during the Third Anglo-Burmese War, troops of the Burma Field Force entered the palace and captured the royal family.
On each side of a bright river he saw rise a line of brighter
palaces, arched and pillared, and inlaid with deep red
porphyry, and with serpentine; along the quays before
their gates were riding troops of knights, noble in face and
form, dazzling in crest and shield; horse and man one
labyrinth of quaint colour and gleaming light—the purple,
and silver, and scarlet fringes flowing over the strong
limbs and clashing mail, like sea-waves over rocks at
sunset. Opening on each side from the river were gardens,
courts, and cloisters; long successions of white pillars
among wreaths of vine; leaping of fountains through buds
of pomegranate and orange: and still along the gardenpaths,
and under and through the crimson of the
pomegranate shadows, moving slowly, groups of the
fairest women .

I bought myself a new lens Friday just so I could get pictures like this. It is an 88-400 mm zoom. I ride the Los Gatos Creek Trail five days a week for about nine months of the year. Most years it is a big deal if I see blue herons five times. There were two of them out today. I have more pictures of these dramatic creatures at www.flickr.com/photos/loualexander/sets/72157621131669696/
