A victim of the British Army "shot at dawn" policy during WW1.

He had enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment in 1912 as a drummer boy and served on the Western Front from the beginning of the First World War.

When he arrived in France with the 3rd Battalion on the 12th August 1914, his rank was that of a Lance-Corporal.

He had fought with his Battalion in every engagement and was promoted to Sergeant.

In August 1917 the 3rd Battalion was in action near the Bellewarde Ridge, when Sergeant Wall went missing during the attack.

This was unlike him and it could have been that he was suffering from "battle fatigue" which affected his mental state.

Unfortunately, this was not considered at his trial.

On the 6th September 1917, Sergeant Wall was executed by firing squad, for desertion, at Poperinghe.

He was 22 years of age.

Ubud is a town on the Indonesian island of Bali in Ubud District, located amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of the Gianyar regency. One of Bali's major arts and culture centres, it has developed a large tourism industry.

Ubud has a population of about 30,000 people, but it is becoming difficult to distinguish the town itself from the villages that surround it. From: wiki.

Bali is an Indonesian island located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. It is one of the country's 33 provinces with the provincial capital at Denpasar towards the south of the island (strictly speaking, the province covers a few small neighbouring islands as well as the isle of Bali). I can't resist posting another photo of native Humboldt Lily (Lilium humboldtii ssp. ocellatum, Liliaceae) growing in Kinevan Canyon, taken from slightly above. Unfortunately, there won't be many more. Drought and deer and the mystery grub that eats the flower buds have taken down the rest of them. Of course there are other canyons, and I'll have to do some hunting! They are beautiful flowers, almost too pretty to be native. But they are. (San Marcos Pass, 26 June 2015)

I didn't use flash or do any photo tricks to get that black background, but I did wait a while for a beam of sunlight to get to the flower with a shaded background. It was worth the wait!

Etosha National Park is a national park in northwestern Namibia. The park was proclaimed a game reserve on March 22, 1907 in Ordinance 88 by the Governor of German South West Africa, Dr. Friedrich von Lindequist. It was designated as Wildschutzgebiet Nr. 2 which means Game Reserve Number 2, in numerical order after West Caprivi (Game Reserve No. 1) and preceding Namib Game Reserve (No. 3). In 1958, Game Reserve No. 2 became Etosha Game Park and was elevated to status of National Park in 1967 by an act of parliament of the Republic of South Africa which administered South-West Africa during that time.[1]

Etosha National Park spans an area of 22,270 square kilometres (8,600 sq mi) and gets its name from the large Etosha pan which is almost entirely within the park. The Etosha pan (4,760 square kilometres (1,840 sq mi)) covers 23% of the area of the total area of the Etosha National Park.[2] The park is home to hundreds of species of mammals, birds and reptiles, including several threatened and endangered species like the black rhinoceros.

The park is located in the Kunene region and shares boundaries with the regions of Oshana, Oshikoto and Otjozondjupa.

The plains zebra (Equus quagga, formerly Equus burchelli), also known as the common zebra or Burchell's zebra, is the most common and geographically widespread species of zebra.[2] It ranges from the south of Ethiopia through East Africa to as far south as Botswana and eastern South Africa. The plains zebra remains common in game reserves, but is threatened by human activities such as hunting for its meat and hide, as well as competition with livestock and encroachment by farming on much of its habitat.

The University of Iowa today announced that it has partnered with the Raise.me scholarship platform on a statewide pilot project to encourage and improve college readiness among Iowa high school students.

Using Raise.me, high school students from select school districts in each of Iowa’s 99 counties will be eligible to earn up to a total of $1,200 in “micro-scholarships” to attend the UI by meeting certain criteria, such as achieving an A or a B grade in select math classes or being involved in arts, athletics or other extra-curricular programs.

The goal of the program is to encourage students to take rigorous courses and get involved in school activities, all while saving for future college expenses.

The high schools selected for the four-year pilot project are from the district in each county with the highest free and reduced lunch percentage, based on 2015-16 data from the Iowa Department of Education. Des Moines Public Schools is one of the districts that will be participating in the project.

The sculpture was commissioned by the Prague municipality and the funds for its execution were raised in a public collection. The work was created in the workshop of Prague sculptor Jan Brokoff. Under the bronze cross a trio of figures mourns the dead body of Christ taken down from the cross. The upper half of Christ's lifeless body rests on the lap of the seated Virgin Mary, while the kneeling Mary Magdalene kisses Christ's lifeless right hand. In the middle of the composition is the standing figure of the mourning St. John the Evangelist. On the pedestal of the statue is a Latin inscription, translated, "Oh all you who pass by, look and see if there is any pain like my pain." Beginning in 1965, all of the statues have been systematically replaced by replicas, and the originals have been exhibited in the Lapidarium of the National Museum.

The issue of negotiations with the Russian Federation may become relevant only when Russia is ready to accept the document developed on the platform of the Peace Formula – President.

Today, the only working platform on the key principles of peace in Ukraine is the Peace Formula proposed by our state. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the end-of-year press conference in Kyiv.

The Head of State reminded that the fourth meeting of national security and foreign policy advisors on the implementation of the Peace Formula would be held in Switzerland in January within the Davos Forum.

"We will work towards ensuring that this meeting gathers representatives from all continents, including the Global South. This meeting will address the last five points of the Peace Formula. The first five points were addressed by advisors at the previous meeting at the end of October in Malta," he explained.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that after this meeting of advisors, work would be done to organize the first founding summit at the level of state leaders. He believes it is necessary to do everything possible to ensure this summit takes place despite all the challenges existing in the world. This will mean that the world continues to pay attention to Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine and to the Peace Formula. According to the President, his recent foreign visits to Latin America, the USA, and Europe have also helped keep the focus on the war in Ukraine.

The Head of State explained that at the first Global Peace Summit, the leaders will work out an agreement between the countries on the fundamental provisions that will be embodied in the relevant document. After this document is agreed upon by all states, it can then be presented to representatives of the Russian Federation.

"If it is ready to accept that document, it will indicate that the issue of negotiations is relevant. As of today, it is not relevant. I don't see a request from Russia, I don't see it in their actions, I see only arrogance in their rhetoric. And murder," Volodymyr Zelenskyy summarized.

This iconic neon sign is a good reminder how interesting things were in the past. Today's urban landscape has become very boring ever since the city by-law designed to kill neon signs was introduced in 1974.

The Smilin' Buddha Cararet sign was located at East Hastings near Columbia Street from the 1950s to the early 1990s. Local alternative rock band, 54-40, acquired & restored the sign before donating it to the museum.

JuneStarted to work at the begging of the year to push the idea of a TV show to be broadcast worldwide that would focus on Japanese culture. After getting approval from the powers that be at Tokyo MX TV and then hunting around for sponsors, the show became a reality but only for a single pilot episode to be aired in June. The Church of the Holy Cross in Middlezoy, Somerset, England dates from the 13th century and has been designated as a grade I listed building.

William of Bitton II was the rector by 20 April 1263. From the 13th to early 16th century, when it became a separate parish, Middlezoy was a chapelry of Sowy parish. The church was originally dedicated to St. Lawrence and later to St. Mary before adopting the current dedication in 1754.

The church has a chancel and a nave with a south aisle and south porch, and a north chapel or vestry. The 3-stage west tower was built around 1483, similar to that at Lyng. The tower contains six bells including one of 1608 probably by George Purdue of Closworth. The upper part of the tower was restored by Sall Strachey Historic Conservation. The work included replacing the pinnacles and sections of the pierced parapet.

The whole church has been renovated many times with a major restoration being undertaken in the 1860s to plans by Charles Knowles, with further repairs in 1908.

The parish is part of the benefice of Middlezoy and Othery and Moorlinch with Stawell and Sutton Mallet, within the Glastonbury deanery.

In memory of Scott Kloeck-Jenson, a Global Studies Scholar dedicated to global peace and justice, Global Studies at UW-Madison awards the SKJ International Internship Fellowships to support graduate students interested in undertaking practitioner internships on social justice issues and the International Pre-Dissertation Travel Fellowships to support overseas travel to potential field research sites for doctoral students whose dissertations include social justice elements.

Kloeck-Jenson had been working on his dissertation in political science at UW-Madison, but on June 23, 1999, he, his wife Barbara, and their two children, Zoe and Noah, were killed in a car accident in South Africa. These grants bearing his name honor his commitment to international understanding and research that serves social justice concerns.

These images are from a luncheon held Oct. 6, to recognize the 2014 recipients, which was attended by Ken and Marlys Jenson, Kloeck-Jenson's parents, and Kloeck-Jenson's brother, Paul Jenson.

Most Rev. David J. Walkowiak, bishop of Grand Rapids, was joined in prayer on Friday, March 25, 2022 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Grand Rapids, by 900 individuals (in person and online) to implore the aid and comfort of our Blessed Mother during the act of consecration of Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The consecration was pronounced by Pope Francis in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and performed in communion with the local Churches around the globe as the pope had invited the bishops of the whole world, along with their priests, to join him in the prayer. Bishop Walkowiak’s celebration of Mass, which began at noon local time corresponded to the start of Pope Francis' celebration. Mass was followed by a recitation of the rosary and concluded with the Act of Consecration.

When something is consecrated, it is declared sacred or holy. The practice of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is linked to the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima to the three little shepherds in 1917.

We are grateful to Immaculate Heart of Mary parish pastor Father Troy Nevins and his staff for hosting this time of prayer.

July 4 is an appropriate time to post a photo of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home near Charlottesville, Virginia. Jefferson (1743-1826) was a delegate to the Continental Congress, member of the Virginia legislature, governor of Virginia, minister to France, first United States secretary of state, and third president of the United States. Revealing the importance he placed on the Declaration of Independence, he gave strict instructions before his death that his gravestone was to state only

Here was buried

Thomas Jefferson

Author of the Declaration of American Independence

of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom

Father of the University of Virginia

Besides the government posts he held, he also omitted his not-inconsiderable work as an architect. Among his designs are Monticello; his second home, Poplar Forest, near Bedford; and the Virginia Capitol building. He died at age 83 at Monticello on July 4, 1826, exactly 50 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and is buried on the grounds west of the house.

Monticello was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 (66000826), and named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 (#442). The UNESCO listing recognizes Jefferson's architectural achievement and includes the central "academical village" of the University of Virginia.
