At the Temple Of Tolerance in Wapakoneta, Ohio - a private residential garden of artistically placed rocks and other objects.
Killdeer - noisy plover with black and white breast stripes. Reddish back. Found in fields, stony dry areas as well as around water.
The Killdeer, Charadrius vociferus, is a medium-sized plover.
Adults have a brown back and wings, a white belly, and a white breast with two black bands. The rump is tawny orange. The face and cap are brown with a white forehead. They have an orange-red eyering.
Their breeding habitat is open fields or lawns, often quite far from water, across most of Canada, the United States, and Mexico, with isolated populations in Costa Rica and Peru. They nest on the ground in an open area with a clear line of sight, or on a gravel roof.
They are migratory in northern areas and winter as far south as northern South America. They are rare vagrants to western Europe, usually late in the year.
These birds forage for food in fields, mudflats, and shores, usually by sight. They mainly eat insects.
Their name comes from their call, frequently heard. These birds will frequently use the "broken wing act" to distract predators from their nests. Their ability to exploit a wide range of agricultural and semi-urban habitat has helped keep them common and widespread in their range.

As firsthand witnesses and actual victims during this COVID-19 crisis of a health care and economic system that prioritizes money over people, registered nurse members of National Nurses United (NNU) held on Aug. 5 more than 200 actions inside and outside hospital facilities in at least 16 states and the District of Columbia to demand that our elected leaders, government, and hospital employers take immediate action to save lives.

Even though this statue of a king is uninscribed, its distinctive features identify it without any doubt as a portrait of Amenemhat III. The heavy brows, prominent cheekbones, hollow cheeks, jutting lower jaw, and tightly bunched muscles at the corners of the mouth make a strikingly realistic impression. Not realistic, however, are the king’s supersized ears. Instead, they symbolize the ruler’s willingness to hear the prayers of his people. If this image had been carved in relief, the king’s hands would have been uplifted in worship. Here, however, to prevent the breakage of projecting limbs, the ruler’s hands are pressed flat against the front his kilt, a portion of which is looped over his belt.

It was one of the dream hikes rather difficult hikes i ever did. This 8 mi round trip with ~2200 Ft elevation gain hike to Observation Point was no fun except those moments enjoying the scenery and taking photos. But again i am not really satisfied with any of the shots because the timing was not perfect. With harsh mid afternoon light and too many shadows, i haven't got any decent photos.

These scans come from my rather large magazine collection. Instead of filling my house with old moldy magazines, I scanned them (in most cases, photographed them) and filled a storage area with moldy magazines. Now they reside on an external hard drive. I thought others might appreciate these tidbits of forgotten history.

On June 5, 2012, you will see the planet Venus as it moves across the face of the early morning sun. This astronomical oddity has played a very important role over the last few centuries in giving scientists a way to understand the size of the solar system.
There is some evidence that the ancient Babylonians saw and recorded on a tablet something about Venus and the Sun in the 16th Century B.C., but the record is not clear. It is fair to say though that Galileo Galilee with his telescope, in 1610, was the first human to actually see Venus as more than just a bright point of light in the sky. Johannes Kepler, meanwhile, was shaking up the world with his meticulous use of astronomical data assembled by Tycho Brahe. He predicted that Venus would pass in front of the Sun on December 6, 1631, but unfortunately the transit was not visible from Europe at all.
The first recorded sighting of this transit was by British cleric, Jeremiah Horrocks, and his friend William Crabtree, on December 4, 1639—only because Horrocks had mathematically predicted it, using better data than Kepler did.
Scientists discovered they could use the transit to figure out the size of the solar system! How do we know that the actual distance from Sun to Earth is 93 million miles and not, say, 153 million or 23 million? In 1663, mathematician Rev. James Gregory suggested that a more accurate calculation of the Earth-Sun distance could be made during the transit of Venus. It turned out to be harder than anticipated, but during subsequent transits, the focus on Venus led to an even more exciting discovery.
During the transit of June 5, 1761, observed by 176 scientists from all over the world, Russian astronomer Mikhail Lomonosov (1711-1765) discovered a very strange thing. Instead of the very black disk of Venus sliding into the Sun's bright edge, it actually grew a brief, beautiful halo of light all around its dark edge. This is exactly what you would expect to see if Venus had an atmosphere!
In 1769 many international expeditions planned observations. The most famous expedition was led by Capt. James Cook, who set up an observation post in Tahiti with his ship, the Endeavour. The expedition astronomers, with help from a detachment of Royal Marines, set up an observatory on a high point of ground above the bay (still known as "Point Venus") and made many transit measurements. They later discovered New Zealand, got stuck on the Great Barrier Reef for several weeks, and explored many of the then unknown coasts of Australia. Cook and his crew completed their trip around the Earth and reached England safely and in triumph. The expedition established Cook's fame as a mariner and explorer.
The next transit, on December 6, 1882, made the front pages of every national and international newspaper! Thousands of photographs were taken with improved calibrations. Only a few astronomers were trusted to carry out the complex calculations from the resulting data. In 1896, Simon Newcomb's value, a distance from Earth to Sun of 92,702,000 plus or minus 53,700 miles, was adopted by the international scientific community. Today most textbooks report the Astronomical Unit (or AU) as "93 million miles."
Located immediately beyond the eastern end of the Ponte Lucano along the Via Tiburtina and composed of a cylindrical drum of concrete faced with travertine ashlars, construction can be dated to the late 1st c. BCE or early 1st c. CE on the basis of the earliest inscription, for M. Plautius Silvanus, consul in 2 BCE. It was converted into a fortified tower by Pope Paul II in 1465.

A Roman bridge of the 1st c. BCE carrying the Via Tiburtina across the Anio (Aniene) River just below Tivoli (ancient Tibur; see on Pleiades). What survives of the ancient bridge is in travertine ashlar masonry with a core in tuff. It takes its traditional name from an inscription apparently recording the construction of the bridge by curule aediles M. Plautius Lucanus and Ti. Claudius Nero; the inscription is now considered a modern forgery, however.

Man's coat of embroidered, hand-loomed cotton from the 1800s. Part of the exhibit "Art and Stories of Mughal India" at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Mughals were descended from Central Asian nomadic horse tribes. A coat such as this was common, because it kept dust from the pants. Coats such as this continued to be popular into the 1800s, and were often woven of such fine, thin thread as to be extremely lightweight and semi-transparent.

The under carriage of the "workings" of an antique railroad car in downtown Snoqualmie, WA. There is a section of a huge log atop this railroad car. It is one of the main attractions downtown, besides all the other antique railroad cars and the "train" itself.
Not sure if this is something made by Lima or not. We have quite the antique railroad collection in my little town of Snoqualmie, WA. I will look for Lima specific items.
