After my wife left for work, I decided to go for a photo walk in our neighborhood. At the end of the street is a dead end into this field. I snapped this picture from the street at the edge of the field.
From the top: The 'Cap of Maintenance' in the little box looks like a Robin Hood Cap but is meant to be red velvet, fur (ermine) trimmed and denotes the status of the family (Earls - but Viscounts when this wing was built). The ostrich feathers stuck into it were awards as recognition of support for Royalty - hence the phrase 'putting a feather in your cap'. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cap_of_Maintenance
The helmet with bars over the visor again signifies the Earl's rank. It is poised, victorious above the 'defeated' helmet of its 'enemy'. The Three Lions of England are shown on the shield below. All the paraphenalia of war surrounds - banners, cannons, muskets, cannon balls, halberds, drums, armour and coiled fuses.
Below the plaque is the Molyneux family crest, the 'Cross Moline' - a cross with 'split ends' - possibly referring to a french windmill - from their Norman origins. Another more grisly theory is that it depicts a Caltrop en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caltrop. It is supported by two lions, standing on the family motto 'Vivere Sat Vincere' which can be translated as "To Conquer is to Live Enough".
Below (in another box) is a monogram of William Molyneux's initials with a little coronet above. This is showing a Viscount's coronet, distinguished by the number of little balls shown on the 'rays' of the coronet. More peacock feathers surround it and underneath is the date of this wing of Croxteth Hall - 1702.
Come to the hall and have a look for yourself!
Photo: Bishops of Michigan and Ohio process in for Mass at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. Pictured are: (front row, left to right) Bishop Walkowiak of Grand Rapids, Bishop Thomas of Toledo; (second row, left to right) Bishop Hurley, bishop emeritus of Grand Rapids, Bishop Binzer, auxiliary bishop of Cincinnati. Every seven or eight years, the bishops of each diocese in the United States travel to Rome to meet with the pope and the various offices of the Roman Curia to provide an account of the state of their dioceses. The ad limina visit for Bishop Walkowiak and other Region VI bishops of Michigan and Ohio is Dec. 9-13, 2019. These were the first ad limina visits for Pope Francis as well as Bishop Walkowiak’s first ad limina pilgrimage. The previous visit in 2012 was made by Bishop Walter Hurley, who also traveled to Rome in December.
Another essential part of the pilgrimage is the celebration of Masses at the Rome basilicas of St. Peter, St. Paul Outside the Walls, St. John Lateran and St. Mary Major.

The four-lighted windows on each side, are filled with faintly tinted cathedral glass, in effective patterns, worked by Mr. Atkinson, of Newcastle, under the direction of the architects. The one next to the Sanctuary, on the south side, is the only one as yet filled with stained glass. It is one of a series in which it is intended to represent the principal saints of the North of England, and contains four full-length figures of Archbishops of York all Metropolitans of the old Sees of Hexham and Lindisfarne, namely, St. Chad, St. Wilfrid, St. John, and St. William, with an incident from the lives of these saints under each figure. They are boldly drawn, and well coloured, standing on gresil grounds, effectively surrounded with clear and silvery glass. The monograms of the saints and the arms of York are introduced into the tracery. In the first light is St. Chad, A.D. 673, with York Cathedral in the background. He is in the act of retiring and willingly surrendering his See, at the command of Pope Agatho, to St. Wilfrid. In the subject below, he is praying in his oratory, and receiving from an angel the announcement of of his approaching dissolution. A monk named Owini, chopping wood close by, is a witness of the
vision. [Ven. Bede]. In the second light, St. Wilfrid, A.D. 709, holding in his hand the Psalterium Romanum, advances from the Cathedral of St. Peter, at Ripon, which he founded, to take possession of the See of York. Below, he is represented holding a Synod at the Monastery of St. Hilda, at Steaneshalch [Whitby], before the kings Oswin and Alcfrid. Colman, Bishop of Lindisfarne, and the Scottish clergy are present, wearing the tonsure from ear to ear, with a semi-circle in front. Agelbert, Bishop of Dorchester, and Wilfrid as a Monk, with other monks wearing the circular tonsure on the crown of the head, are debating with them. Standing by Wilfrid s side, is a Monk, holding a book inscribed De observantia temporis Paschalis. St. Wilfrid s great work all his life was the introduction of Roman discipline in the North. In the third light, St. John of Beverley, A.D. 721, bearing in his hand his tomb, is retiring to the Monastery of Beverley, in the background, where he died. He is represented below, restoring to health a dying man called Addi, by making over him the sign of the cross. [Ven. Bede]. In the fourth light is St. William, A.D. 1154, laying aside his coronet, with the Monastic Church of Winchester in the background. He was the son of Emma, sister of King Stephen, and was exiled from the See of York for seven years, which he spent in the Monastery at Winchester. The subject below represents the Saint rescuing the people from drowning by his prayers. They had crowded on to the wooden bridge over the river at York, to welcome him as Bishop, and it had broken down under their weight. [Ven. Bede].; A sum of 200 was paid for this window. It is a fine work, and well represents the advance of modern art, without losing the spirit and feeling of the old work. The artist, on whom it reflects great credit, is Mr. Frampton, of London, working in conjunction with the architects.

Abstract: A new stabilized formulation of pyrethrins was field tested against larvae of the western hemlock looper by spraying from a helicopter. A selected number of larvae were placed in foliage on platforms were they were fully exposed to the spray and on small trees where they were partially screened from direct spray contact. Ninety-nine percent and 94 percent of the larvae on the platforms and on the trees, respectively, were paralyzed or killed by the insecticide. Most of the larvae fully exposed on the platforms were knocked down within a few minutes after spraying, whereas knockdown of larvae in the trees occurred over a considerably longer period of time. Recovery rate of paralyzed larvae was higher for those that were slow to be knocked down than for larvae knocked down quickly.

Maleta Stories

Installation, Visual Art
With the Centre for International Experience as its backdrop, a projected stop-motion animation of a woman kneeling before a closed suitcase, or maleta, is seen. Slowly, the maleta begins to unzip itself by a force still unknown. What emerges, wrapped in Filipino newspapers, is the embodiment of the histories and narratives of people who have come to this land. Facilitated by the Magkaisa Centre, participants are invited to share their "maleta stories" of how they came to be in Canada on baggage tags, which then become apart of the web-like installation affixed to the British colonial architecture of the Cumberland House, constructing a collective family tree of migration. A gallery of community-based artworks created by members of the Magkaisa Centre resides inside.

Here we are rehearsing before our concert in the Church of St Peter and St Paul.
As part of the 2012 Music in Country Churches series the Avison Ensemble presented a concert of music from our recent recordings in the wonderful surroundings of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Lavenham. The Ensemble performed Concerti Grossi by Charles Avison and Handel, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, and renowned cellist Richard Tunnicliffe performed one of John Garth's Cello Concertos. The Ensemble was directed by Pavlo Beznosiuk (baroque violin) with continuo played by Roger Hamilton (harpsichord) and Paula Chateauneuf (archlute).
The Ensemble's recordings of Avison's complete works have been exceptionally well received. Our recording of Garth's 6 Cello Concertos has been a sensational success, having been reprinted several times during the first year of its release and it is regularly played on Classic FM. Our recording of Handel's Op. 6 Concerti Grossi has won numerous awards and was shortlisted for the Gramophone Classical Music Awards 2011 in the Baroque Instrumental category. Our recent release of Vivaldi's Violin Concertos Op 8 (including The Four Seasons) has been described in reviews as "... offering up performances which are as entertaining, compelling and colourful as they are authoritative and polished."
The Avison Ensemble is the outstanding period instrument orchestra based in Newcastle upon Tyne, which plays and popularises the music of Charles Avison (1709-1770) and other English classical composers of the Baroque period, such as Garth, Arne and Herschel. The Ensemble also performs Purcell, Handel, Vivaldi, Corelli, Geminiani, Pergolesi, Teleman, Rameau, Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.

In the south transept is another Tudor spectacular, a set of tombs of the Cowper family, reminiscent of the eccentric group at Swinbrook (Oxon). John Cowper and his wife lie on their sides in full Elizabethan rig, semi-prone with elbows on cushions and holding books. The father kneels above facing the wall, as if praying for their souls.

Funding dirty coal? Not with our money.
Activists hung a banner on Bank of America's Charlotte, NC headquarters to tell the bank: "Not with our money!" People are fed up with Bank of America putting profits before people and planet. The bank is the largest funder of the US coal industry and the leading foreclosure on Americans' homes. Meanwhile, BoA is laying off 30,000 workers and hiking fees left and right. Enough is enough.
You too can tell Bank of America, "Not with our money!"

One of a number of adverts from the c.1929 "Official Handbook" to the County Borough of Dudley in Worcestershire produced on behalf of the Corporation by the publisher E. j. Burrow & Co. Ltd. The adverts show the then relatively prosperous industrial and manufacturing town that was still, in many ways, closely allied to the traditional Black Country industries based on the centuries old coal, iron and steel enterprises.
The Earl of Dudley's works at Round Oak near Brierley Hill, in Staffordshire, had been established as an iron works in 1857 but, with a view to a shift to steel manufacturing, the company was reformed in 1891 as a publci company but it struggled financially and in 1897 it was reformed again under the Dudley family control as the The Earl of Dudley's Round Oak Works Ltd. In post-war years after Nationalisation it returned to private ownership under Tube Investments before, like the rest of the industry, returning to government ownership in 1967. Finally British Steel closed the plant in 1982. The site now forms part of the Merry Hill shopping centre.

St. John of the Cross Strawberry Social 7-14-18. In 2018, St. John of the Cross Episcopal Church celebrates their 175th Anniversary. As one of the many events they have planned, they built a model of the church for their float for the 2018 Homecoming Parade, and won 1st Prize in the Float Division. After the Parade on Saturday, July 14, 2018, they once again offered their yearly Strawberry Social where they serve homemade shortcakes with strawberries, ice cream and cool whip. But this year they offered the delicious treat FREE to celebrate this banner year. Many people gathered to partake of this offer and socialize with family and friends. The Riverbend Choral Group of South Bend sang for the event. The Church will be announcing other exciting events tied to the founding of the church on April 25, 1843 in Bristol. They first met in the storeroom of Thomas Wheeler and established a new Episcopal congregation here. The Samuel Judson family gave the group an acre of land which eventually became the site of the church, the cemetery and the former rectory. They had a site, a charter, eleven families, and a visiting priest. Ann Jeanette Judson, wife of Samuel, returned east in 1844 and twice more later on to solicit friends there to raise enough to finish the church.
